Abstract

A valve guard for a cylinder valve. The guard has a guard body and a churning knob, wherein the guard body and churning knob comprise separate components which are operatively connected together in use.

Description

VALVE GUARD
The present invention relates to a valve guard for a gas cylinder valve. Cylinder valve assemblies for gas cylinders and the like are well known. It is common in the field to provide a valve guard which attaches to the cylinder and which protects the valve assembly in the event that the cylinder is dropped or knocked over. Compressed gas bottles used in industrial applications are typically large and heavy, standing up to 1 .46m tall and weighing 82kg. While they are usually transported from filling to delivery vehicles on special trolleys, they must be moved from filling station to trolley and from trolley to vehicle by hand.
In order to move industrial gas bottles by hand, they are tilted off- vertical, with one hand holding the top of the bottle and the other rolling it forwards. Moving bottles in this manner is known as churning. Many modern gas bottles are fitted with valve guards which include a churning knob feature on the top which may be grasped to aid movement of the bottle.
The present invention provides a valve guard for a cylinder valve assembly comprising a guard body and a churning knob, wherein the guard body and churning knob comprise separate components which are arranged to be operatively connected together in use.
Providing the churning knob as a separate component is advantageous as it allows the churning knob to be made in a different way to the guard body. Valve guards are typically made from cast metal which is heavy and
expensive, particularly when complex shapes are to be made. If desired the churning knob may be hollow to add to material cost and weight savings, an option which is not available if the churning knob is cast as an integral part of the valve guard.
Preferably, the churning knob comprises a different material to the guard body to provide more flexibility in material and manufacturing choices.
In a preferred example, the churning knob comprises a smoother surface finish to that of the guard body. Cast metals tend to have a rough finish. A churning knob with a rough finish is harder to move than one with a smooth finish. A smoother finish will therefore aid handling of the cylinder valve assembly.
The churning knob preferably comprises a plastics material which is cheap, easy to fabricate and capable of having a smooth finish.
Preferably the churning knob is frangible by shattering or deformation. This is beneficial as a damaged churning knob may alert users or filling station staff to that fact that the valve may also be damaged. In one preferred example the churning knob is arranged to carry an identification marker which may be used to provide a badge of origin or information regarding the cylinder or its contents. The identification marker is preferably an electronic identification device such as an RFID tag to allow electronic tracking and marking.
In another aspect, the present invention provides a kit of parts for forming a valve guard as described above, the kit comprising at least a guard body and a churning knob. In a further aspect, the present invention provides a cylinder valve assembly comprising: a cylinder, a valve assembly connected to the cylinder, and a valve guard as described above. In an additional aspect, the present invention provides a method of forming a valve guard, the method comprising: providing a guard body and providing a churning knob, wherein the valve guard is formed by operatively connecting the churning knob to the guard body.
An example of the invention will now be described with reference to the following drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows an isometric view of a cylinder valve assembly comprising a valve guard according to the present invention.
The cylinder valve assembly 1 comprises a gas cylinder 2 and a valve assembly 10. In this example the valve assembly 10 is a lever operated valve assembly. However, it is to be understood that any suitable valve assembly may be substituted for the valve assembly 10.
A valve guard 20 is attached to the cylinder 2. The valve guard 20 comprises a guard body 21 and a churning knob 22. In this example, the guard body 21 comprises a cast metal material and the churning knob 22 comprises a plastics material. However, any suitable material combination may be selected.
The churning knob 21 comprises an information plate 23 which may carry a badge of origin and/or information regarding the cylinder vale assembly such as age, fill date etc. The information plate 23 may be removable so that new information can be provided each time the cylinder assembly 1 is re-filled. Alternatively or additionally, the information plate 23 may be adapted to carry a label such as a sticker. In an additional or alternative example, the information plate may comprise an electronic identification means such as an RFID tag. In a further alternative example, an electronic identification means such as an RFID tag may be carried within the churning knob 22. The information plate 23 may be removable to allow insertion or replacement of the electronic identification means.
In one example, the churning knob 22 is frangible such that it is designed to break or deform if the cylinder valve assembly 1 is dropped or knocked over. The churning knob may be designed to shatter or deform.
