Description
Dashboard Display, Vehicle, and Method for Displaying Information to a Driver
The invention relates to a dashboard display for displaying information to a driver of a vehicle. The dashboard display comprises a display unit and a first operation information reception unit for receiving first operation information. The display unit has a first display region for displaying interaction content in the first display region and a second display region for displaying a first information content in the second display region. The dashboard display is prepared to display the first information content in dependence on received first operation information.
Further, the invention relates to a vehicle comprising a dashboard display according to the invention. The vehicle may be for example a passenger car, a truck, a bus, a construction vehicle, or another kind of vehicle.
Moreover, the invention relates to a method for displaying information to a driver, wherein the method comprises following: displaying first interaction content in a first display region of a dashboard display; receiving a first operation information; and displaying in a second display region of the dashboard display a first information content in dependence on received first operation information.
Dashboard displays serve for displaying and operating a plurality of vehicle functions including many selectable options. Some cars have a first display at an instrument cluster and a second display at a head unit, wherein both displays are digital displays. Generally, a driver can select at least some information and/or operate at least some of the contents to be presented in either one of the displays. However, there is still a demand of rendering the manner of presentation of selected information and of operating content even more user-friendly and/or adaptable by the user than possible with state-of-the art dashboard displays.
Dashboard displays shall meet among others following demands. The space for present-
ing information is limited. The user demands to be met are very different. The dashboard display shall be adaptable to different driving situations.
US2002/0085043 A1 describes an in-vehicle display. Upon occurrence of a driver-initiated or externally initiated event the face of the in-vehicle display is changed to a face that is more suited for dealing with the actual situation. The display comprises a number of selectable buttons for controlling in-vehicle systems as radio, phone, GPS, air conditioning, and seat position. A drawback of this dashboard display is the confusing structure not easily comprehensible and memorable.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a dashboard display having a user surface which is more easily comprehensible and memorable to a driver of a vehicle. Meeting this object is particularly important in a complex environment like a dashboard of a modern vehicle, wherein the dashboard offers a plurality of user views (faces) to the driver for monitoring and controlling a variety of most diverse applications (for example display of cruising speed, navigational information, settings of an infotainment system, or settings of an air conditioning system).
Further, it is an object of the present invention to provide a vehicle having a man-machine interface which is more easily usable than today's dashboards. Moreover it is an object of the present invention to provide a method of displaying information to a driver, the method facilitating for the driver a monitoring and controlling of a variety of diverse applications.
This object is solved by the devices defined by claims 1 , 9, and 10. Useful embodiments are defined by the dependent claims.
For solving the object of the present invention a dashboard display for displaying information to a driver of a vehicle comprises a display unit and a first operation information reception unit. The display unit has a first display region for displaying first interaction content in the first display region and has a second display region for displaying a first information content in the second display region. The second display region is located aside the first display region. The first operation information reception unit is prepared for receiving first operation information. The dashboard display is prepared to display the first information content in dependence on received first operation information.
In addition, for meeting the same object, a vehicle comprises a dashboard display according to any of the preceding claims.
Correspondingly, a method for displaying information to a driver comprises following: displaying first interaction content in a first display region of a dashboard display, receiving a first operation information, and displaying in a second display region of the dashboard display a first information content in dependence on received first operation information.
By the special feature of the present invention that the second display region is located not anywhere on the dashboard but for all applications aside the first display region, the structure of the man-machine interface of the dashboard display is more easily comprehensible and more easily memorable to the driver of the vehicle. Thereby, the driver can be largely relieved from the low-order action of understanding the structure of the user interface of a dashboard. As a benefit, the driver can devote more attention to the road scene, which also improves road safety.
In a first option of the dashboard display, the second display region is located directly aside the first display region. Thereby, the driver can almost keep his angle of view when looking at first to the first display region for selecting an information content and then slightly changing his angle of view for apprehending a content displayed in second display region. Alternatively, a driver taking a quick intermediate glance to the road scene can quickly readjust his eyes to the previous angle of view and can than easily identify the second display region for apprehending content displayed in the second display region.
In a second option of the dashboard display, the dashboard display is prepared to display dependent on the first operation information or dependent on a second operation information a second information content in a third display region. Thereby, at least one of the contents displayed on the second and third display regions can be kept on hold. Resulting from this, the driver need not reselect the content kept on hold, when intermediately selecting or viewing another content (to be displayed in another display region).
In a third option of the dashboard display, the dashboard display is prepared to display in the first display region a second interaction content for offering a choice of second operation information. Thereby, the dashboard display can be operated following a selection tree structure. The second interaction content (for example a second selection menu) can
be displayed in the first display region alternatively to the first interaction content (which is for example a selection menu) or in addition to the first interaction content. When the second interaction content is displayed in addition to the first interaction content an information may remain on the dashboard keeping the driver informed about an item selected from the higher-order first interaction content.
In a fourth option of the dashboard display, the dashboard display is prepared to display the first, a second, a third and/or a fourth information content in at least two display regions located left to the first display region. Alternatively or in addition, the dashboard display is prepared to display the first, a second, a third and/or a fourth information content in at least two display regions located right to the first display region.
In a fifth option of the dashboard display, the dashboard display is prepared to display the first, a second, a third and/or a fourth information content in a fused region of at least two display regions located left to the first display region. Alternatively or in addition, the dashboard display is prepared to display the first, a second, a third and/or a fourth information content in a fused region of at least two display regions located right to the first display region.
Displaying a selection menu in a first region located between a left display region and a right display region is beneficial because then the driver needs to change the angle of view only on a same or minimum small scale when changing his look from the selection menu displayed in the first display region to any of the contents displayed in any of display regions located left and right to the first display region.
In a sixth option of the dashboard display, the dashboard display is prepared to display the first, a second, a third and/or a fourth information content electively in the first display region. Thereby, display space of the first display region can be used for displaying additional content at times when no selection menu needs to be displayed.
In a seventh option of the dashboard display, the dashboard display is prepared to display the first and/or a second information content electively in a fused display region formed from a temporary composition of the second and/or the third display region with the first display region and/or wherein the dashboard display is prepared to display the third and/or the fourth information content electively in a fused display region formed from a temporary
composition of the fourth and/or fifth display region with the first display region. Thereby, display space of the first display region can be used for displaying space-demanding content (for example a navigation map) at times when no selection menu needs to be displayed.
In principle, dashboards with any subset (i.e. any combination) of the mentioned options are possible.

In a second embodiment, the dashboard unit DU is prepared to display (dependent on the first 011 or dependent on a second 0I2 operation information) a second information content IC2 in a third display region DR3.
Fig. 2 schematically shows a first switching SW between a main menu M1 and menus M2, M3 of two subordinate menu levels. In a third embodiment, the display unit DU is prepared to display in the first display region DR1 a second selection menu M2 for selecting the second operation information 0I2. The second selection menu M2 can be displayed in the first display region DR1 alternatively to the first selection menu M1 or in addition to the
first selection menu M1. When the second selection menu M2 is displayed in addition to the first selection menu M1 a first interaction content IA1 may remain displayed on the display unit DU keeping the driver informed about an item previously selected from the higher-order first selection menu M1. Preferably, at least one of the selection menus 1 , M2, M3 may have a selection tree structure.
Fig. 3 schematically shows a second switching SW2 between a first P1 and a second P2 partitioning of display areas DR1 , DR2. In the first partitioning P1 the first information content IC1 or the second information content IC2 or a blank filling is displayed in the second display region DR2 (left to a first interaction content IA1) displayed in the first display region DR1 (located right to the second display region DR2). In the second partitioning P2 the first IC1 or second IC2 information content or the blank filling, respectively, is displayed in a combined display region DR12 resulting from a fusion of the first DR1 and the second DR2 display regions. Further, Fig. 3 shows a third switching SW3 between displaying a first information content IC1 in the second display region DR2 and displaying a second information content IC2 in second display region DR2. Moreover, Fig. 3 shows a fourth switching SW4 between displaying a second information content IC2 in the second display region DR2 and displaying a blank filling in second display region DR2.
Fig. 4 schematically shows a first variant SW2' of the second switching SW2 of partitioning. Here, the second display region DR2 is located left to the first region. The dashed lines show optional additional display regions DR4 and DR5 located right to the first display region DR1 for displaying third IC3 and fourth IC4 information contents.
Fig. 5 schematically shows a second variant SW2" of the second switching SW2 of partitioning. Here, the second display region DR2 is located right to the first region. The dashed lines show optional additional display regions DR4 and DR5 located left to the first display region DR1 for displaying third IC3 and fourth IC4 information contents.
Optionally, the display unit DU may be prepared to display a third IC3 and/or a fourth IC4 information content electively in the first display region DR1.
Fig. 6 schematically shows a combined display unit DU according to the present invention. Optionally, the combined display unit DU may be prepared to display the first IC1 and/or the second IC2 information content electively in a first extended display region formed
from a temporary composition of the second DR2 and/or third DR3 display region with the first display region DR1. Alternatively or in addition, the combined display unit DU may be prepared to display the third IC3 and/or the fourth IC4 information content electively in a second extended display region formed from a temporary composition of the fourth DR4 and/or fifth DR5 display region with the first display region DR1. Preferably, the first display region DR1 is not split by a borderline of the instrument cluster unit UIC or by a borderline of the head unit HU.
Fig. 7 shows a method 100 for displaying information to a driver. The method comprises following steps. In a first step 110 first interaction content IA1 is displayed in a first display region DR1 of a display unit DU. In a second step 120 a first operation information is received. In a third step 130 a second display region DR2 of the display unit DU a first information content IC1 is displayed in dependence on received first operation information 011. The second display region DR2 is located aside the first display region DR1. The method 100 can be combined with any of the special features of the dependent device claims.
The invention may be employed for providing an easily comprehensible and memorable partitioning of displays of instrument cluster unit UIC and head unit HU in regions each displaying at a time either information content or operation information. Thereby, following possibilities may be offered to the driver: simultaneous, independent representation of plural different display contents; and simultaneous, independent representation of at least one display region displaying information content and of at least one other display region displaying operation information.
These features allow that a first content can remain displayed while simultaneously a selection menu is displayed for selecting another content or for selecting a submenu. Or, a higher-order menu can remain displayed while simultaneously a submenu is displayed for selecting a content or a further submenu.
The operating concept of providing a center display region DR1 may specify
employing list-like menus (with or without a tree structure) as standard embodiment. When justified by special application demands, a further embodiment may allow exceptions from this specification.
The display regions DR1 , DR2, DR3, DR4, DR5 can be configurable. For a smoother representation, configurable display regions DR1 , DR2, DR3, DR4, DR5 may be temporarily switched to a blank mode, when currently not needed.
The first display region DR1 can temporarily become a full-screen interactive region, when the first display region DR1 is currently not needed for displaying a selection menu.
A visual combination of instrument cluster unit UIC and center display (head unit HU) can be supported by a common wallpaper.
The suggested configurability of the display unit DU enhances adaptability to user demands and representation of functions being adapted to changing situations. By displaying a content IC1 , IC3, IC4, IC5 in parallel to a menu, the menu can be operated and modified. Thereby, the driver can simultaneously observe on the dashboard display stati of at least two functions or menu contents.
A harmonized design of instrument cluster unit UIC and head unit HU enables a new structuring of information helping to avoid redundancy and to reduce or simplify menu structures. For example, a cluster of themes which could be offered redundantly at both display units (in case of clearly separated displays) may be merely located in the head unit HU.
For example, a harmonized design of instrument cluster unit UIC and head unit HU may allow employing both display units (instrument cluster unit UIC and head unit HU) for simultaneously displaying a common wallpaper, wherein each of both display units displays another (complementary) portion of the common wallpaper. When the instrument cluster unit UIC and the head unit HU are positioned horizontally side-by-side, a main design specification may be a same height of both units.
According to the invention, display regions on the display at the instrument cluster unit UIC and/or the further display at the head unit HU are configurable such that partitioning of each of the display regions to display information content and operation information can be performed based on different user demands and/or different driving situations. Plural different display contents may be represented in a simultaneous and independent manner.
Besides this, the inventive concept may be applied to man-machine interfaces of office equipment (for example a copying machine or a computers) or to man-machine interfaces of factory equipment (for example a production machine).
