Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a novel container with an inner liner for wrapping consumer articles.
  • the inner liner and the container of the present invention find particular application for elongate consumer articles.
  • containers formed from folded laminar blanks.
  • elongate consumer articles such as cigarettes and cigars are commonly sold in rigid box shaped containers.
  • These containers can be hinged lid containers having a box portion with a lid connected to the box about a hinge line extending across the rear wall of the container. In use, the lid is pivoted about the hinge line to open the pack and provide access to the smoking articles held in the box.
  • the container further includes an inner frame partly wrapped around the consumer articles. This may provide further rigidity to the container as well as protect the consumer articles. In cases where the inner frame extends above an upper edge of the box portion, the inner frame typically also provides a surface against which the lid can close.
  • the invention provides a container comprising consumer articles, an inner liner for wrapping consumer articles, which inner liner is partially or completely wrapped around the consumer articles, and a box portion housing the consumer articles wrapped by the inner liner, wherein the inner liner has a rectangular shape with two short sides and two long sides, the inner liner has an end area adjacent to each short side of the inner liner, the two end areas adjacent to the two short sides do not have slits, the inner liner has one or more intermediate areas between the two end areas, and the one or more intermediate areas have a plurality of slits.
  • the consumer articles can be elongate smoking articles, preferably cigarettes, cigarillos and cigars, more preferably cigarettes
  • the slit-containing inner liner is stretchable, that is, it can be stretched. Stretching of the inner liner has the effect that edges of the slits move apart from each other so that the slits become holes. Depending on the degree of stretching the shape of the holes can vary from a flat ellipse over a more oval shape to a circle. These holes can have areas of about of about 0.05 square millimeters to about 1 square centimeter, preferably to about 0.1 square millimeters to about 0.75 square centimeters, and more preferably of about 0.3 square millimeters to about 0.5 square centimeters. Because of the formation of the holes the surface area of the inner liner is increased.
  • this increase of a surface area is about 10 percent to about 50 percent, preferably about 15 percent to about 40 percent, and more preferably about 20 percent to about 30 percent, compared to the surface area of the inner liner before stretching.
  • all slits in the inner liner of the invention do have the same length and are arranged in a regular pattern, more preferably with an essentially constant distance between the single slits. This will lead, with or without the essentially constant distance between the single slits, after stretching to a regular mesh pattern, and the resulting holes will form a meshed area.
  • Stretching the inner liner has, in addition to the increase of the surface area by the formation of holes, two additional effects. Because of the presence of holes in the inner liner after stretching the inner liner will more and more lose its sheet-like structure and will more and more adapt a wave-like structure in the slit-containing and hole-containing areas of the inner liner. This wave-like structure of parts of the inner liner will lead to a more bulky structure of the inner liner and will as a consequence lead not only to an increase of the surface area but also to a volume increase of the inner liner.
  • the second additional effect is that stretching will move the edges of the slits out of the plane of the inner liner so that these edges will be protruding out of the inner liner plane. This again leads to a slight volume increase.
  • these protruding edges of the holes after stretching can get in touch with the consumer articles and can help to keep these consumer articles in place as a result of a friction between the protruding edges and the consumer articles.
  • slits in the inner liner have different orientations stretching will only have a limited effect on the above-described increase of the inner liner's surface area and volume. For example, if a first slit is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the inner liner and a second slit perpendicular thereto, then applying a stretching force parallel to the longitudinal axis of the inner liner will only have an influence on the slit which is arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and only this slit will be transformed into a hole. For that reason it is preferred that all slits within one inner liner of the subject invention have the same orientation, for example, that all slits are parallel or perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the inner liner.
  • Stretching of an inner liner of the subject invention with slits perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the inner liner by applying a force parallel to this longitudinal axis will lead to an elongation of the length of the inner liner and at the same time a slight contraction of the width of the inner liner. Stretching of an inner liner of the subject invention with slits parallel to the longitudinal axis of the inner liner by applying a force perpendicular to this longitudinal axis will lead to an elongation of the width of the inner liner and at the same time a slight contraction of the length of the inner liner.
  • an elongation of the length is more preferred. Consequently, an inner liner is more preferred in which all slits are perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the inner liner. It is however also preferred to have slits parallel and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the inner liner. This allows at the same time an increase of the inner liner's length and width.
  • Stretching of the inner liner of the subject invention can be done by the manufacturer or by the consumer or by both. If stretching is done by the manufacturer during production of the container of the invention, this has the advantage that as a result of the increase of surface area after stretching less material is used for the inner liner. Thus material saving is an advantage which is achieved if stretching is done on the manufacturer's side. As discussed above, stretching of the inner liner also leads to a volume increase. Thus, if stretching is done on the manufacturer's side, this can be used to cover some extra space which is not needed for the consumer articles within a given container. For that purpose it is advantageous if the slits are arranged parallel to the longitudinal axis of the inner liner because then the above-described increase of the inner liner's width can be obtained which will cover the empty space within the container.
  • the inner liner is not stretched on the manufacturer side this then can be done by the consumer. Since the inner liner has not been stretched by the manufacturer, the consumer can use the full range of stretching available for a given inner liner and has for that reason more flexibility in adapting the volume of the inner liner.
