[0021] As disclosed herein, a system and method for deploying customized care routines in a consumer device includes a system and method in which individual usage and/or sensor data is collected by the consumer device, e.g., personal care device. The individual usage and/or sensor data collected by the consumer device is transferred via a data network and/or connected devices and shared with a professional. The professional develops a customized/prescribed care routine which is then transferred back to the personal care device via a data network and/or connected device. The
customized/prescribed care routine provides a benefit to the consumer or user of the personal care device. [0022] Aspects of the embodiments of the present disclosure include one or more of: the capability to transfer stored usage and configuration information via a data network or connected device (such as a smart phone) to a professional for review; the capability of a professional to recommend specific device configuration(s) and/or routines; and the capability to transfer new device configuration(s) and/or routines from the professional to a consumer device via a data network or connected device.
[0023] With reference now to Figure 1, there is shown a schematic view of a system 10 for deploying customized care routines in a consumer device 12 according to an
embodiment of the present disclosure. The system for deploying customized routines in a consumer device comprises the consumer device 12, a first communication device 14 and a second communication device 16. In one embodiment, the consumer device 10 comprises a personal care device, or a power toothbrush. The first communication device 14 comprises, for example, a data network and/or a mobile phone. In one embodiment, the mobile phone comprises a smart phone. In another embodiment, the first communication device 14 couples to the consumer device via near field communication, NFC. In addition, the second communication device 16 comprises a data network and/or a mobile phone different from the first communication device. In one embodiment, the mobile phone of the second communication device 16 comprises a smart phone.
[0024] The consumer device 12 includes a handle 18, motor or actuator 20, drive shaft 22, microcontroller or processor 24 (and suitable control electronics), at least one sensor 26, a transceiver 28, a storage device (i.e., storage) 30, and an activation button 32. In one embodiment, the consumer device comprises a personal care device, such as a power toothbrush. The consumer device 12 further includes a replaceable attachment 34, e.g., a brush head with bristles, adapted for being coupled to the drive shaft 22, e.g., via a press fit. In the embodiments of the present disclosure, the microcontroller or processor 24 (i.e., control electronics) comprises any suitable controller, microcontroller, processor, power source and/or other electronics to provide power and control signals for implementing the various functions, or any combination thereof, as discussed further herein.
[0025] In one embodiment, storage 30 comprises a non-volatile memory, e.g., Flash, electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM), and/or other memory device. The non-volatile memory may be internal or external to the microcontroller or processor 24, wherein the non-volatile memory is available during program (i.e., customized device routine) execution by the microcontroller or processor 24. The storage 30 is adapted to store customized device routines executable by the processor 24 for performing the customized device routines for a user as a function of device configuration data. The storage 30 is further adapted to collect and store in response to usage of the consumer device 12 by the user at least (i) usage data, (ii) sensor information sensed by the at least one sensor 26 during usage, and (iii) the device configuration data.
[0026] In one embodiment, the activation button 32 of the consumer device 12 is operable between (i) an OFF state and (ii) at least one activation ON state. The at least one activation ON state can comprise one or more operation states for implementing various care routines with the consumer device 12, as discussed further herein. In addition, the at least one activation ON state includes a suitable procedure and/or control with respect to coupling of the consumer device 12 with the first communication device 14.
[0027] The first communication device 14, in proximity of the consumer device 12, is coupled to the consumer device, for receiving the usage data, sensor information, and device configuration data from the consumer device 12. In one embodiment, coupling of the first communication device 14 to the consumer device 12 includes coupling via transceiver 28 and near field communication, NFC, generally indicated by reference numeral 36 in Figure 1. Other methods of coupling, via wired or wireless communications, are also possible.
[0028] The second communication device 16 is remote from the consumer device 12. The first communication device 14 transfers the usage data, sensor information, and device configuration data as received from the consumer device 12 to the second communication device 16, e.g., via wire or wireless communication, generally indicated via reference numeral 38 (Figure 1). In particular, the first communication device 14 transfers the usage data, sensor information, and device configuration data to the second communication device 16 (i) for professionally reviewing and analyzing of the received usage data, sensor information, and device configuration data, and (ii) for developing at least one
professionally customized routine personalized for the user as a function of the
professionally reviewed and analyzed received usage data, sensor information, and device configuration data. Subsequently, the second communication device 16 transfers the at least one professionally customized routine to the first communication device 14, wherein the first communication device 14 transfers, via an external communication 36, the at least one professionally customized routine to the consumer device 12. Responsive to the external communication 36 of the at least one professionally customized routine to the consumer device 12, the consumer device processor 24 is operable to install a new customized device routine for enabling the consumer device 12 to utilize the at least one professionally customized routine for the user.
[0029] According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, the at least one professionally customized routine comprises at least one professionally customized care routine. In another embodiment, the at least one professionally customized care routine further includes professionally customized care routine parameters and user instructions. In a further embodiment, responsive to the consumer device 12 receiving, storing and installing the at least one professionally customized routine, the processor 24 is further configured to execute the at least one professionally customized routine.
[0030] In connection with professionally customized care routines, parameters, and instructions for a consumer device, the consumer device may have multiple modes and features. For example, the consumer device may include a power toothbrush with resonant rotation motion produced by a motor (i.e., drive system and/or drive electronics) of the device. The following discussion can also be applied to other systems (i.e., consumer care devices) driven with suitable drive electronics (e.g., an air/liquid jet flossing device, interdental cleaner device, etc). In connection with a power toothbrush, various modes, features, and brushing routines are a primary form of user interaction when the power toothbrush is in use. The modes, features and brushing routines provide or enhance user benefits by cueing or guiding user technique, such as brushing quadrants, extended brushing time, focused brushing in specific areas of the teeth, as well as providing or enhancing user benefits by providing real time feedback to the user. The structure of modes, features, and brushing routines can be realized as a sequence of one or more operating points run for a dwell time and/or connected by a transition time. A functional window can be established that includes all the potential operating points and sets limits for dwell and transition times. This realization allows for an expression and implementation of arbitrary modes, features and routines within the identified functional window. Modulations can be achieved by repeatedly cycling between two operating points with zero dwell time and a fixed (sub-second) transition time. [0031] In one embodiment, the professionally customized care routine comprises a brushing routine sequence, e.g., represented by a sequence of bytes or a sequence array. The brushing routine sequence is a detailed specification for a given brushing routine. The brushing routine sequence comprises a series of subcomponents including: operating points, transition times, and dwell times. An expression of brushing routine sequence can also include a mechanism for repetition or looping in the sequence. An operating point can be defined as a fixed frequency and duty cycle for the device motor. Each operating point can be associated with amplitudes in-mouth. For example, a primary operating point for a "clean mode" can be selected based on factory normalization and comprises a base frequency and duty cycle from which the operating points for other modes are defined. A relative operating point can be defined as the difference between a given operating point and the primary operating point. Lastly, operating points with a frequency of 0 Hz or a duty cycle of 0% for a given drive motor are assumed to mean that the motor should be turned off while the system remains at the operating point. Transition times can be defined as a period of time (e.g., expressed in milliseconds or seconds) during which the drive frequency and duty cycle are changed from a previous operating point to the given operating point. The dwell time of a given operating point refers to the period of time, following a transition time, during which the operating frequency(ies) and duty cycle(s) do not change. With respect to repetitions, any arbitrary brushing routine can be expressed as simply a sequence of operating points with transition times and dwell times. However, significant communications and memory efficiencies can be gained by implementing a looping/counting structure, in the event of repetitions.
[0032] In operation, firmware running on the microcontroller or processor 24 reads a brushing routine sequence (i.e., sequence array) from the storage 30, interprets the bytes of the sequence array and switches control outputs connected to motor or actuator 20 according to the requirements of the brushing routine sequence. Motor or actuator 20 includes a suitable drive circuit (internal or external) to the motor or actuator. The microcontroller or processor 24 also manages aspects of the user interface (LED
illumination(s), sounds, etc.), processes sensor inputs, manages battery charging, as well as generates motor drive control signaling. In one embodiment, the motor drive control signaling applied to the motor drive circuit comprises a set of digital outputs switched on and off at specific times by the microcontroller or processor 24. [0033] In accordance with the embodiments disclosed herein, the first communication device 14 is used to bridge data (e.g., usage, configuration, etc.) between (i) the consumer device 12 and (ii) a professional's device 16 (i.e., the second communication device). For example, one way to implement bridging of data is via transmission over the Internet.
Another way of bridging data is by the first communication device 14 (e.g., the consumer's smart phone) being physically transported to a professional's office, for transfer to the second communication device 16, via near field communication, NFC. This second way or transmission method advantageously provides significant added security and/or privacy value/protection for the consumer device user.
[0034] The embodiments of the present disclosure advantageously provide various benefits, as will be understood from the disclosure herein, by transmitting device configuration data (as well as, usage and sensor data) from the consumer device, e.g., a power toothbrush, to a professional, e.g., a dental professional. In one example, the consumer device configuration helps the professional understand how the consumer device is actually being used. The consumer may not be fully aware of all available device options of the consumer device and likely may not know which options are enabled or how they are set. Accordingly, by allowing the professional the opportunity to modify the device configuration as well as the consumer, resulting benefits to the consumer can be
maximized. For example, the consumer device can comprise a power toothbrush. The power toothbrush can include an operating feature which provides timing indications (e.g., audible, tactile, or other feedback) for brushing in each of four quadrants of a user's mouth. In addition, the timing indications can be disabled/enabled by the end user. Suppose that an end user has inadvertently disabled the timing indications. If the end user is having trouble consistently brushing in all four quadrants of their mouth, then a dental professional may propose an engaging customized care routine that includes distinct sounds for each quadrant and re-activation of the timing indications operating feature on the power toothbrush. The dental professional then composes and/or creates a customized care routine, using a suitable creation application, wherein the customized care routine includes a routine sequence, e.g. represented by a sequence of bytes or a sequence array, as discussed earlier herein. For example, the professionally customized care routine may specify a first operating frequency for a first block of time, an intensity setting for a second block of time, distinct tactile stimulation (or other distinct signaling via light(s) and/or audible tone(s) according to the capabilities of the consumer device) to delineate care for a given quadrant (or quadrants), etc. for a particular end user, based upon that individual's device usage and configuration parameter information. Tactile stimulation can include driving or operating the motor from a first operating frequency (e.g., 250-260 Hz) to a second operating frequency (e.g., an order of magnitude higher, or 2000 Hz) for a brief duration, on the order of a few hundred milliseconds or longer, so long as it is sufficient for an end user to recognize the tactile stimulation. In another example, the customized care routine includes signaling the user (via light or tone) to maintain brushing in a particular area, e.g., the rear molars, for a prescribed duration, before the user moves the brush head, and thus brushing, onto a next area.
[0035] Turning now to Figure 2, there is shown a method 40 for deploying customized routines in a consumer device. The method begins at step 42, for example, by selection, via activation button 32 (Figure 1), of at least one activation ON state. At step 44, a consumer uses a consumer device 12 of Figure 1. At step 46, the consumer device collects personal usage and sensor information. At step 48, the personal data and device configuration information are transferred via an external communication 36 to a data network or connected device, for example, first communication device 14 (Figure 1). At step 50, the personal data is transported (i.e., transferred) 38 to a professional, via a data network or connected device, e.g., second communication device 16 (Figure 1). At step 52, the professional reviews the personal data and other information (i.e., sensor data, device configuration, etc.) and then develops at least one customized care routine for the individual.
[0036] With reference still to Figure 2, the method continues at step 54, in which the at least one customized care routine, parameters and/or instructions, are transported or transferred 38 , via the second communication device 16, back to the data network or connected device, i.e., first communication device 14. At step 56, the at least one customized care routine, parameters and/or instructions, are transported 36, via the first communication device 14, back to the consumer device 12 (i.e., within physical range for effecting a transfer). At step 58, the at least one customized care routine, parameters and/or instructions, are transferred, via the first communication device 14, to the consumer device 12. In one embodiment, the at least one customized care routine comprises, or is represented by, a sequence of bytes. The sequence of bytes is transferred 36 from the first communication device 14 to the consumer device 12 (via NFC, Bluetooth LE, etc.) and stored in the consumer device's storage 30. At step 60, the consumer device 12 provides the at least one customized care routine to the individual consumer. At step 62, the individual consumer benefits from the at least one care routine customized to the individual's needs and use patterns. The method terminates at step 64.
[0037] According to another embodiment, a method for deploying customized routines in a consumer device (e.g., a personal care device / power toothbrush) comprises providing a consumer device, wherein the consumer device includes a processor, at least one sensor, and a storage device (i.e., a storage). The storage is adapted to store customized device routines executable by the processor for performing the customized device routines for a user as a function of device configuration data. The storage is further adapted to collect and store in response to usage of the consumer device by the user at least (i) usage data (e.g., personal usage data), (ii) sensor information sensed by the at least one sensor during usage, and (iii) the device configuration data. The method further includes coupling a first communication device, in proximity of the consumer device, to the consumer device, for receiving the usage data, sensor information, and device configuration data from the consumer device. In one embodiment, coupling the first communication device to the consumer device comprises coupling via near field communication, NFC. The method still further includes transferring from the first communication device to a second
communication device, remote from the consumer device, the usage data, sensor information, and device configuration data (as received from the consumer device) to the second communication device (i) for professionally reviewing and analyzing of the received usage data, sensor information, and device configuration data, and (ii) for developing at least one professionally customized routine personalized for the user as a function of the professionally reviewed and analyzed received usage data, sensor information, and device configuration data. The second communication device transfers the at least one professionally customized routine to the first communication device. In addition, the first communication device transfers, via an external communication, the at least one professionally customized routine to the consumer device. Responsive to the external communication of the at least one professionally customized routine to the consumer device, the consumer device processor is operable to install a new customized device routine for enabling the consumer device to utilize the at least one professionally customized routine for the user.
[0038] According to yet another embodiment, a consumer device 12 is configured for being implemented in a system 10 for deploying customized care routines as discussed herein. The consumer device 12 comprises a processor 24, at least one sensor 26, and a storage device (i.e., storage) 30. In one embodiment, storage 30 comprises a non-volatile memory, e.g., Flash, EEPROM, and/or other memory device. The storage 30 is adapted to store customized device routines executable by the processor 24 for performing the customized device routines for a user as a function of device configuration data. The storage 30 is further adapted to collect and store in response to usage of the consumer device 12 by the user at least (i) personal usage data, (ii) sensor information sensed by the at least one sensor 26 during usage, (iii) the device configuration data, and (iv) the at least one professionally customized routine. Responsive to the external communication of the at least one professionally customized routine to the consumer device 12, the processor 24 is operable to install a new customized device routine for enabling the consumer device 12 to utilize the at least one professionally customized routine for the user.
[0039] In one embodiment, a consumer device, such as a power toothbrush, includes a pressure sensor, Near Field Communications transceiver, and a microcontroller. The microcontroller reads sensor data, stores the sensor data in a storage device, and can transfer the stored sensor data along with device configuration data to a connected device, such as a smartphone. The microcontroller further receives new configuration data from the connected device, such as the smartphone. In such a power toothbrush, the device configuration data can include one or more device operating features such as brushing intensity, modes, daily routines, etc. In addition, a total device operating time can be tracked and stored as usage data. Such a total device operating time can be useful for a professional in developing new routines and recommendations for a consumer and/or for returned goods analysis by the consumer device manufacturer (e.g., in determining a useful life, device improvements, and/or device longevity).
[0040] With respect to usage data parameters of a consumer device, the following non- limiting list provides a number of various examples. For a power toothbrush, usage data parameters can include one or more of actual brushing duration(s), time of day of brushings, selected brushing routine, selected intensity setting, type or identity of brush head used (e.g., a part number, serial number, or other identifier), battery charge state, time since last full charge, or other parameter. For other personal care devices, usage data parameters can include one or more of dates and times of use, actual duration and/or dose, selected care routine, selected option setting, attached accessory or accessories, battery charge state, time since last full charge, or other parameter.
[0041] In connection with one example for a power toothbrush embodiment of the present disclosure, in operation, a consumer uses the power toothbrush. The power toothbrush collects personal usage data and sensor data. The personal data and device configuration are transferred to a smart phone via near field communication, NFC. The consumer takes the smart phone to a dentist/hygienist. Toothbrush usage data and device configuration data is transferred via Bluetooth from the consumer's smart phone to the dentist/hygienist' s computer, PC, and/or tablet PC. The dentist/hygienist reviews the toothbrush usage data and device configuration with the consumer and recommends customized brushing routines to improve technique and compliance for the individual consumer. Customized brushing routine(s) are transferred back to the consumer's smart phone via Bluetooth. The consumer takes the smart phone home. The customized brushing routine(s) are loaded into the power toothbrush via NFC. The customized brushing routine(s) are then available in the power toothbrush for consumer use. The customized brushing routine(s) help the consumer improve technique and compliance, leading to improved oral health.
[0042] Uploading of usage data and downloading of customized routines to a consumer device is carried out according to the requirements of a particular implementation of consumer device. Depending on the commercial proposition and target market segment for the particular implementation of consumer device, the process of uploading and/or downloading can range from fully automated (e.g., a user touches their smart phone to their power toothbrush and all usage data is copied to the smart phone) to highly interactive (e.g., when a user touches their smart phone to the power toothbrush, an app is launched on the smart phone that prompts the user to select what data and/or customized routine to transfer). In one example, an indication of uploading and/or downloading to the consumer device could be given through screen notification on the smart phone and/or a flashing LED pattern on the power toothbrush. Other indications, such as tactile indications, audible indications, various combinations of indications, etc., are also possible. [0043] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, communications between the consumer device and the first communications device are short range and in a secure environment (i.e., a user's home). In addition, privacy and/or security measures can be applied when the data is transferred from the first communications device (typically in the user's control) to the second communications device (typically in the professional's control).
[0044] In other embodiments, device configuration and/or device usage information could be transferred directly to and from a professional via a WiFi or cellular connection to the Internet, or indirectly through an online service provider. In other embodiments, configuration and/or usage information could be transferred to and from a professional via a temporary storage device, such as USB flash drive or SD card. In addition, the embodiments of the present disclosure relate to PC or connected device application(s) or set of applications that together are capable of reading usage and/or configuration data from a consumer device, displaying that information, creating or selecting configuration options and transferring those options back to the consumer device.
[0045] The measures/device features which are disclosed herein to solve the identified problems, and provide resulting advantages, include allowing professional assistance in configuring consumer devices to best provide desired benefits to the end user without physically transporting the consumer device to the professional.
[0046] Although only a few exemplary embodiments have been described in detail above, those skilled in the art will readily appreciate that many modifications are possible in the exemplary embodiments without materially departing from the novel teachings and advantages of the embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the embodiments of the present disclosure can be advantageously used in any form of configurable electronic device which may collect usage information and may not be easy or convenient to transport to a professional for customization/optimization of the device configuration, such as, power toothbrush applications, personal home medical devices, home electronics (e.g., home theatre systems, solar power systems, etc.) and cooking appliances. Accordingly, all such modifications are intended to be included within the scope of the embodiments of the present disclosure as defined in the following claims.
