Description
IMPROVED DEVICE FOR GRINDING AND/OR FINISHING OPERATIONS
DESCRIPTION The present invention relates to an improved device for grinding and/or finishing operations.
More particularly, the present invention relates to an improved device for surface finishing and/or grinding operations, especially suitable for use on manual or automatic/automated machines for operations aimed at improvement of the surface finish of products preferably, but not exclusively, represented by metal pipes.
As is known, surface finishing and/or grinding operations have the function of improving the quality and, more specifically, the values of roughness of the surface of products such as, for example, metal pipes, with the aim of smoothing the welding beads, eliminating irregularities and/or possible surface defects so as to improve the performances and the life of the material and, at the same time, increase the aesthetic appearance and the quality of the product. Operations of surface finishing and/or grinding are traditionally performed using manual machines (grinding machines, sanding machines and the like, small in size and easy for the operative to grip) or automatic machines provided with belt, disk or abrasive blades tools, restrained rigidly to a support and suitable for performing removal of material from the surface of the product machined.
These operations can be of the grinding and polishing type (with removal of a surface layer of material), sanding (without removal of material) and brushing (performed by means of an abrasive material with the aim of improving the surface features).
The tools used for these operations are provided with abrasive elements for example of the zinc oxide or aluminium or silicon carbide type according to the specific finish features which are intended to be obtained.
More particularly the traditional brushing/sanding tools with rigid disks or blades, likewise rigidly restrained to a support (for example rigidly glued on a substrate of
glass: fibre);- have some major disadvantages linked to the formation of signs or scratches on the surface of the product or pipe machined and caused, generally, by the rigid structure of the tool whereto said abrasive disk or blades element is applied. A further disadvantage is represented by the fact that these traditional tools, due to their geometric features, are not able to guarantee a degree of surface finish of good quality on products with round or irregular surface.
FR 2 127 897 A5 and US 2009/221212 Al describe abrasive rotors for grinding or polishing surfaces, having blades slanted with respect to the axis of the rotor.
The object of the present invention is that of obviating the disadvantages stated above. More particularly the object of the present invention is that of providing an improved device for surface finishing and/or grinding operations, suitable for being used both on manual machines and on automatic or automated apparatuses.
A further object of the present invention is that of providing a device for surface finishing operations on pipes or similar products which is rigid and, at the same time, flexible, so as to allow a use thereof also in points of difficult access without the need to have to provide for a replacement of the same device.
A further object of the present invention is that of providing a device which allows the obtaining of an even surface finish, without scratches and/or signs of abrasion.
A further object of the present invention is that of providing a device for surface operations which allows operations of grinding, finishing, sanding, etc. also on products round in shape or in any case irregular.
A further object of the present invention is to make available to users an improved device for operations of surface finishing and/or grinding suitable for ensuring a high level of resistance and reliability in time and such, moreover, as to be easily and economically produced.
These and other objects are achieved by the apparatus of the invention which has the features as claimed in claim 1.
According to the invention an improved device is provided for surface finishing and/or grinding operations, comprising a base element or back-up pad, disk-shaped, and a plurality of abrasive blades, flexible and radially arranged with respect to the back-up pad, and means for locking/fastening said abrasive blades with respect to the base element or back-up pad, with said abrasive blades arranged with a median longitudinal axis slanted with respect to a central axis of the base element or back-up pad; the means for locking/fastening the individual abrasive blades comprise a shaped appendage of the back-up pad, an annular crown provided with an annular appendage and a cup-shaped body provided with a further annular appendage coupled, respectively, above and below said back-up pad, said abrasive blades being provided, at the end portion turned in the direction of the locking means, with openings or slots having shapes corresponding to the shaped appendage of the back-up pad, to the annular appendage of the annular crown and to the further shaped appendage of the cup-shaped body such as to obtain locking of the individual abrasive blades in three points.
Advantageous embodiments of the invention are disclosed by the dependent claims. The constructional and functional features of the improved device for surface finishing and/or grinding operations of the present invention will be made clearer by the following detailed description, in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings which represent a preferred and non-limiting embodiment thereof, in which: Figure 1 shows schematically an axonometric view of the improved device for surface finishing and/or grinding operations of the present invention;
Figure 2 shows schematically a view from above of the same device;
Figure 3 shows schematically a section view along an axial plane A-A of the view of
Figure 2. Referring to the aforementioned drawings, the improved device for surface finishing and/or grinding operations of the present invention, denoted overall by 10 in the aforementioned drawings, comprises a support element or back-up pad 12, disk- shaped, with respect whereto, according to what is detailed here below, a plurality of
abrasive blades 14 are restrained, radially arranged along the entire circumferential development of said support element or back-up pad.
The support element or back-up pad 12, made in metal, plastic material or another known material suitable for the purpose, is defined by a body of preferably truncated cone shape comprising a base or upper face 16, a lateral surface 17 slanted at decreasing diameters in a direction opposite to the base or upper face 16 and a central truncated cone pocket 18 which develops with decreasing diameters in the direction of the base or upper face 16 of the same support element or back-up pad 12.
The back-up pad 12, at the base or upper face 16 and centrally thereto, has a blind or through hole 24 suitable for allowing a connection (threaded or with fast coupling) of the finishing device with respect to a support such as, for example, the wrist of a robotic arm or of a tool-holder head of a machine tool or machining centre or, again, a device of the manual type for rotational actuation of said finishing/grinding device.
Along the lateral surface 17 of the support element or back-up pad 12, perpendicularly to and away therefrom, a shaped appendage 20 is formed which develops along the entire circumferential development of the lateral surface 17 and whose axis is substantially perpendicular to the lateral surface 17 and slanted, with respect to the vertical axis of the back-up pad 12, through an angle a comprised between 45 and 60°.
Said shaped appendage 20 constitutes a support element for the plurality of abrasive blades 14 radially arranged along the entire circumferential development of the back- up pad 12 and equidistanced one from the other.
The abrasive blades 14 can be with fine or coarse grain according to the type of surface machining (for example coarse grain for grinding operations or fine grain for finishing operations).
Said abrasive blades 14 have typically a trapezoidal shape and, preferably, of the type with rectangular trapezium with an end portion provided with an opening with shape corresponding to that of the shaped appendage 20 of the back-up pad 12 to form a shape coupling with respect to said shaped appendage and with the opposite end
portion slanted, with said blades which are, likewise, stabilised with respect to the lateral surface 17 of the back-up pad 12 by means of optional resins or similar means of stabilisation. The coupling between the single abrasive blades 18 and the shaped appendage 20 takes place at a central region of an upper end portion (or turned in the direction of the base or upper face 16) of the single abrasive blade which, for this purpose, is provided with an opening or slot with shape corresponding to that of the shaped appendage 20 formed centrally to the portion starting from the end edge.
Said abrasive blades 14 are arranged with the median longitudinal axis at a slant a tendentially comprised between 45 and 60° with respect to the vertical axis of the back-up pad 12 with said longitudinal axis substantially perpendicular to the lateral surface 17 of the same back-up pad.
The device of the invention comprises further means having the function of stabilising the aforementioned abrasive blades with respect to the back-up pad at their stabilised end portion with respect to the shaped appendage 20 of the same back-up pad.
More particularly the device comprises an annular crown 26 fitted on the back-up pad 12 at the outer circumferential edge of the base or upper face 16 and provided with an annular appendage 26' which develops perpendicularly to the base or upper face 16 and away therefrom and which engages with the abrasive blades 14 and a cup-shaped body 28 with truncated cone development corresponding to that of the central pocket 18 of the back-up pad and provided, along the outer side edge opposite to its base in contact with the base of the central pocket 18, with a further annular appendage 28' circumferentially developed in the direction of the base of said cup-shaped body and suitable for engaging with the abrasive blades 14.
The annular appendage 26' of the annular crown 26 and the further annular appendage 28' of the cup-shaped body 28 couple with the single abrasive blades 18 at openings or slots with shape corresponding to that of the aforementioned appendages and formed along the opposite side edges of said upper end portion.
The abrasive blades 14 are thus rigidly stabilised with respect to the back-up pad 12 by means of the shaped appendage 20, of the annular crown 26, of the cup-shaped body 28 at three points of their upper end portion, while the opposite or lower end
portion is flexible and can easily be adapted to the surfaces of the products to be subjected to a surface finishing operation.
As can be seen from the above the advantages that the device of the invention achieves are clear.
The improved device for surface finishing and/or grinding operations of the present invention, thanks to the optimised flexibility of the abrasive elements, allows advantageously the performing of surface finishing operations also on products with irregular or round shapes and, likewise, in points or parts of difficult access.
A further advantage of the device of the invention is represented by the fact that it allows the obtaining of an even surface finish, without scratches and/or signs of abrasion.
Although the invention has been described above with particular reference to one of its embodiments given solely by way of a non-limiting example, numerous changes and variations will appear clear to a person skilled in the art in light of the description given above, The present invention intends, therefore, to embrace all the modifications and the variations that fall within the spirit and the scope of the following claims.
