Description

IMAGE DISPLAY DEVICE CAPABLE OF BROADCASTING A PLURALITY OF PROGRAMS ENABLING REMOTELY SELECTIVE SIMULTANEOUS DISTRIBUTION OF SUCH PROGRAMS
The present invention relates to an image display device capable of broadcasting a plurality of programs in a network via a two-way communication system.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that although a vast number of programs can be presented, user-interaction is limited in the sense that only the main image display device allows selection of a program content to be viewed and remote users in communication with the image display device in a network have no means to interfere with the program content selection process. Assuming that a TV service may have hundreds of channels, there might be occasions where a remote user is interested in viewing a certain program selected from among a plurality of program contents such that he/she receives a program broadcast of preference from the image display device. The remote user may then be able to make a selection as to the program content of preference such that a two-way communication interactive decision process can be in question.
Accordingly, a plurality of individual program contents can be simultaneously processed to be delivered to a multitude of network users with the possibility of selecting a certain program content for the remote users from among a plurality of programs.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as WO2013123696, which defines a method and system for split-screen display for multi-screen sharing. The split-screen display method comprises the following steps: A. determining the spatial coordinates of a main display device and of display-sharing devices; B. determining, on the basis of the spatial coordinates, directions relative to a screen of the main display device of the display-sharing devices of which the distances to the screen of the main display device are less than a predetermined distance; and, C. splitting, on the basis of the directions of the display-sharing devices relative to the screen of the main display device, a screen image into a main image portion and corresponding extended image portions to be displayed by the main display device and by the display-sharing devices. By detecting the positions and attributes of the sharing devices, the image suitable for display is transmitted to the display-sharing devices for split-screen display, thus implementing addition of a display device at any time and flexible setting in terms of position.
The present invention provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that remote users are offered a split-screen image containing a plurality of program contents in association with different broadcast channels such that interaction of the user in the selection of the program content to be remotely viewed is enabled, as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method by which a remote user can make a TV program selection to be viewed on a remote terminal without directly interacting with the image display device.
The present invention proposes a method for operating an image display device by which a split-window screen with different video streams of the received broadcast programs from different TV channels is generated and this screen is transmitted to predefined network recipients. The remote recipients are normally unable to make a selection as to which channel is to be watched simply because the remote user can not directly interact with the television.
According to the invention, a certain number of remote users are simultaneously able to remotely select and watch a broadcast program of a broadcasting station or channel from the split-window screen using a local software module. Alternatively, the remote user’s selection can be a passive one in the sense that the specific channel to be viewed is not communicated to the image display device and the remote user receives the interested video stream form a remotely accessible predetermined network location by way of directly browsing to said network location.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes the method of operation according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes an image display device enabling a remote user to view a broadcast program received by said image display device, on a remote terminal. More particularly, the present invention provides that an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcast programs generates a split-screen image or a series of split-screen images of a certain number of predetermined or selected broadcast programs to be communicated to a plurality of remote terminals such as computers and mobile devices. The program contents in the split-screen image can be selected by a master user in direct interaction with the image display device.
Program contents within the technical context of the present invention may be defined as any sort of programs in various categories. The present invention therefore provides a method for transmitting a plurality of program contents to a plurality of program content viewers in different predefined remote locations in the manner to allow the viewers to select one of the available program contents in the remote location in an interactive manner. The present invention therefore provides a technical method for simultaneously communicating a plurality of broadcast programs in the form of a split-screen image, a series of images or video streams to a certain number of remote recipient terminals such that each remote recipient or group of recipients can independently select and view any of the available broadcast programs without having to directly interact with the image display device for selecting a broadcast program of interest. More particularly, the present invention enables remotely selective simultaneous distribution of broadcast programs received by an image display device such as a TV set.
The method of the present invention can be particularly advantageously implemented in a school setup where different groups of students can be remotely presented with educational broadcast programs in accordance with their educational needs. For instance, an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and channels presenting a certain number of educational broadcast programs can simultaneously distribute a selection of such programs to a multitude of remote terminals in a remotely selective manner, meaning that the remote recipients individually selects programs to be displayed. Alternatively, the method of the invention may also prove significantly useful in other setups including offices, meeting rooms and hotels.
According to the present invention, a master user directly operating the image display device may determine a certain number of channels to be displayed in a split-screen configuration to be transmitted as a split-screen image, a series of images or video streams to predetermined remote network terminals.
The image display device of the invention can broadcast program contents received from broadcasting stations to remote terminals in a computer communication network. The image display device can conventionally connect to a local area network and preferably a wireless local area network (WLAN) by way of establishing a secure connection link with a wireless communication device, said network typically involving a multitude of remote terminals such as computers.
According to the present invention, a remote terminal user within the communication network, receiving video streams of the broadcast programs in a split-screen configuration can select and watch any of the video streams by means of a local software module in the form of a video streaming application. The local software module in this case will only receive the selected video stream and the information as to the specific selection will be communicated to the image display device so that only the selected video stream in association with the interested program is transmitted and received.
Alternatively and in a more simplistic manner, the communication in between the remote terminal and the image display device may not involve a two-way communication so that the information as to the selection of the program is not conveyed back to the image display device.
To this end, the image display device can upload a plurality of video streams displayed in the generated split configuration screen to a network location being remotely accessible. The remote terminals may access the requested video stream by way of directly browsing to a predetermined network location instead of using a local software module. In this manner, the related path in association with each broadcast program in the network can be browsed from the remote terminals via an Internet browser. Each broadcast program in the split-screen configuration may have an exposed assigned number indicative of the accordingly named specific video stream in the predetermined network location.
Alternatively, the predetermined network location and the names of all of the available program contents can be sent to prespecified e-mail addresses or saved on a remotely accessible connected storage device such as a USB drive.
According to the present invention, the screen splitting and sharing process can be launched by the master user anytime by selecting the corresponding menu option or pressing a corresponding button.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes a method for operating an image display device, said image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services, said method for operating the image display device comprising the steps of, a) generating a split-configuration screen containing a plurality of video streams in association with different program contents, b) simultaneously transmitting the split configuration screen to a plurality of remote terminals of a communication network, c) remotely selecting in the remote terminal a video stream in association with a certain program content displayed in the split configuration screen and, d) receiving the selected video stream in the remote terminal of the communication network.
In an embodiment of the invention, the step of remotely selecting a video stream in association with a certain program content displayed in the split configuration screen comprises the additional step of using a local software module for remotely selecting and receiving the video stream in the remote terminal.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the step of simultaneously transmitting the split configuration screen to a plurality of remote terminals of a communication network comprises the additional step of uploading a plurality of video streams displayed in the split configuration screen to a network location being remotely accessible.
In a still further embodiment of the invention, the step of receiving the selected video stream in a remote terminal of the communication network comprises the additional step of accessing the selected video stream by way of directly browsing to a predetermined network location.
In a yet still further embodiment of the invention, the predetermined network location in association with each broadcast program is browsed from the remote terminals via an Internet browser.
In a yet still further embodiment of the invention, each broadcast program in the split configuration screen has an assigned number indicative of an accordingly named specific video stream in the predetermined network location.
In a yet still further embodiment of the invention, the predetermined network location and the names of all program contents are sent to prespecified e-mail addresses or saved on a remotely accessible storage device.
In this regard, the invention ensures that a plurality of broadcast programs are communicated as split-screen video streams to a certain number of remote recipient terminals and these recipients can independently select and view any of the available broadcast programs without having to directly interact with the image display device itself. Therefore, a remotely selective simultaneous distribution of broadcast programs is enabled for a plurality of remote terminals.
