Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a label, and in particular, to a label which may be removably attached to an article. More particularly, although not exclusively, the present invention relates to a label for attachment to an article in the form of a container, such as a glass bottle for wine, beer, or other beverage. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a labelling method, including making a label, and removably applying it to a bottle or other container.
  • Labels for wine, beer and other beverage bottles have traditionally been made of paper, and have been affixed to the bottle using a glue.
  • the label is initially printed on the paper.
  • a glue is then applied to the rear of the label shortly before the label is adhered to the bottle.
  • This type of paper label may be relatively easily removed when required, such as when the beverage is consumed and the glass bottle is to be recycled. Sometimes, consumers also like to remove a label from a bottle after the contents of the bottle have been consumed, in order to remember the details of the wine for future reference, such as to identify a manufacturer and/or retailer and/or other information pertinent to the wine, the winery, the vintages, etc. [0005] With a paper label, this label removal process is relatively easily performed.
  • the present invention seeks to overcome at least some of the disadvantages identified in the prior art and/or providing at least an alternative label which may be removably attached to a container.
  • the present invention provides a label, including:
  • said label is adapted to be removably attached to a container.
  • said container includes a bottle, including a bottle for wine, beer, spirit, soft drink, water or any other beverage.
  • said front display surface includes printed matter thereon.
  • said front surface is formed of paper, plastics, canvas or other printable material.
  • said label is formed of material capable of being subjected to at least partial immersion in water, ice, refrigeration or other cold temperature environments.
  • said front surface of said label includes a textured surface.
  • said textured surface has the feel and/or look of canvas.
  • said front surface, when applied with an ornamental design is an original artwork, or, has the appearance of an original artwork printed thereon.
  • said front surface has a photographic or other image applied thereto.
  • said label further includes a peel-away covering adapted to cover said adhesive on said rear surface, which is removed prior to attachment of said label to said container.

  • the image may be applied to the label by known printing techniques.
  • the adhesive covering 5 may then be removed from the rear surface of the label 4, as indicated by step 12, before the label is applied to the bottle as shown in step 13.
  • step 14 illustrates the optional removal of the label from the bottle. This may be done by either a customer in a restaurant, or, once the bottle is discarded and available for recycling, the label may be easily removed.
  • the adhesive used is preferably such that the label may be removed and reapplied multiple times with good adhesion.
  • the label itself may be re-used either on another container, or, for another purpose.
  • the label may be applied to a totally different surface than the original container. It may, for example, be displayed in a book, as a wall-hung picture, or the like.
  • the label of the present invention has certain characteristics.
  • the material of the label should preferably be capable of being subjected to at least partial immersion in water or ice, and/or capable of being subjected to refrigeration or being placed in a cold and/or wet and/or damp environment.
  • a particular application of the present invention is for applying either original artistic artworks to containers such as wine bottles and/or applying digital images of original artworks to the bottle. It will be appreciated that in the event that the label front surface has a textured surface such as the appearance of canvas, that an authentic looking image will be displayed on the bottle, which has the appearance of an original artwork. This may therefore have particular application to either having an artwork which indicates geographical origin of the wine or has some other tourist focus. The label can then be removed as a souvenir and be reapplied to either another article, a travel diary, or the like.
