Abstract

The invention relates to a device for installing a liner in a pipeline. The device comprises a drum (10) provided therein with a shaft (14) for the liner to be installed to be wound on and stored around the shaft (14) rotatable by a crank (16) from outside the drum in order to unwind the liner from the shaft (14) via an outlet (11, 12) in connection with the drum (10). The device is characterized in that at least a part of the device is manufactured from a transparent material, and the proportion of the transparent material is more than 10% of the surface area of the drum (10) of the device.

Description

Device for installing liner in pipeline
Field of the invention
[0001] The invention relates to renovating pipelines, and particularly to a device for installing a liner in an existing pipe.
[0002] Currently, a technique called lining is often used for rehabilitating or renovating pipes that are damaged or near the end of their service life. In lining, typically a plastic-coated polyester felt pipe, i.e. a liner, is first impregnated with synthetic resin. The impregnated liner is closed at its one end and wound up inside a lining drum, around a shaft. The open end of the liner is fastened around an outlet of the lining drum, in which case when pressurized air is supplied to the lining drum, the liner, due to the influence of air pressure, starts protruding backwards out of the lining drum, and the protruding liner is directed into the pipe under renovation by unwinding the liner from the shaft by rotating the shaft.
[0003] A problem with the above-described arrangement is emergency management, which is why the lining technique is mainly used in rather simple pipelines. If the process of installing the liner does not proceed as planned, it is possible to rewind the liner on the shaft into the lining drum. The liner residing inside the lining drum may also be monitored through an openable inspection door so as to detect and correct possible deviations.
Brief description of the invention
[0004] An object of the invention is to provide an apparatus so as to enable the aforementioned problems to be solved. The object of the invention is achieved by a method and a system which are characterized by what is disclosed in the independent claims. Preferred embodiments of the invention are disclosed in the dependent claims.
[0005] The invention is based on the idea of manufacturing the relevant parts of the lining drum from a highly heat and pressure resistant transparent material, in which case no separate inspection door is necessary.
[0006] An advantage of the method and system according to the invention is that a lining process becomes considerably more manageable since deviations occurring during the lining process may be easily detected and responded to appropriately. Brief description of the figures

Detailed description of the invention
[0008] Figures 1 and 2 show a simplified example of a lining drum according to an embodiment of the invention. The structural parts of the lining drum correspond in form to the prior art lining drums. The lining drum comprises a drum 10 through which passes a shaft 14 rotatable by a crank 16. Rotating the crank 16 thus makes the shaft 14 rotate since the crank 16 is fastened to the shaft 14 outside the drum 10. The liner to be installed may be wound on the shaft by rotating the crank and, correspondingly, the liner may be unwound from the shaft by rotating the crank in an opposite direction. The liner to be installed residing in the lining drum exits from the device through an outlet, such as an output pipe 1 1 as well as a fitting part 12 at an end of the output pipe. The fitting part 12 may also be a fixed part of the output pipe 1 1 . The fitting part or the whole entity formed by the output pipe and the fitting part may be dimensioned according to the liner being used. The air, water or steam necessary for using the lining drum is brought into the drum via an appropriate connector along a tube or a pipe, for instance. Preferably, pressurized air is used for the installation, in which case air pressure higher than that in the environment of the drum pushes the liner out of the drum via the outlet.
[0009] In practice, the lining drum typically has legs on which the device may be stored and used, and optionally wheels to enable the device to be moved more easily over longer distances. These, however, do not substantially relate to the present invention and can, according to the prior art, be implemented in many different ways, depending on the use. For the aforementioned reasons and for the sake of clarity, the figures show no such elements. However, a person skilled in the art appreciates that the devices according to the present embodiments may be further provided with known support structures to facilitate storage, transport and use, without deviating from the scope of the invention. The lining drum may be used in a manner similar to that employed in connection with many other prior art lining drums.
[0010] In the embodiment according to the invention, a significant proportion of the material the lining drum is made of is transparent, and the transparency is not restricted to the inspection door entirely. Preferably, the proportion of the transparent material is more than 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% or 50% of the surface area of the lining drum or drum 10, in which case the lining drum has good visibility on its interior and possible problem situations occurring during the use of the lining drum are readily visible and solvable. Hereinbelow, the term "transparent lining drum" may be used for referring to a lining drum of the above-disclosed kind. In an embodiment, all sheet-like and/or tubular parts of the lining drum are made of a transparent material, enabling any point inside the lining drum to be monitored freely. The transparency of the material used reduces the need for an inspection door, so no inspection door is typically necessary in connection with the lining drum according to the embodiment.
[0011] In an embodiment, at least one surface, most surfaces or all surfaces of the lining drum is/are entirely or in part made of transparent polycarbonate, which is highly resistant to heat and mechanical stress. Other transparent technical plastics may also be used, however taking into account the technical requirements of the lining drum with respect to pressure and temperature, among other things. In this context, surfaces are used for referring to planar or cylindrical surfaces of the lining drum which define the interior of the lining drum from the surrounding space. In this context, surfaces are used for referring to planar or cylindrical surfaces of the lining drum which form a space reserved for the liner. Surfaces do not refer to fastening equipment, such as bolts, screws, glues, connectors, nor to supports, brackets, wheels or other corresponding equipment to be used in connection with the lining drum. The equipment and the like to be used in connection with the lining drum may also be transparent, and particularly when they have large surface areas it may be advantageous to use a transparent material for them as well.
[0012] The use of polycarbonate is supported by its good working properties, mechanical strength as well as the possibility of making it completely transparent. A polycarbonate sheet may be worked in many different ways, and it is not prone to cracking or splitting. Polycarbonate can be sawn with a circular saw and a bandsaw, milled, planed, drilled, thermoformed, bent when cold and heated, and finally the surface may also be polished using solvents in order to remove any marks caused by working processes. The worked pieces may be connected to one another by utilizing fold connections, rivets and/or bolts and nuts. The pressure resistance of the lining drum may be changed by changing the thickness of the polycarbonate material used. When a short liner with a small diameter is used, it is possible to use a small lining drum which does not have to be resistant to high pressures. In a larger drum, the situation may be the opposite, and it is necessary to manufacture it from a thicker material in order to increase its pressure resistance.
[0013] A transparent lining drum makes it possible to install the liner also in complex pipelines because it enables the installation procedure to be monitored continuously and in a detailed manner. Typically, difficult targets are either renovated employing means other than a liner or the work is divided into parts in order to enable the liner to be installed in the entire pipeline. The smaller the diameter of the pipeline, the greater the number of bends and the sharper the bends in the pipeline, and the longer the liner to be installed, the more difficult it is to install the liner. The transparent lining drum facilitates the monitoring of the installation procedure to the extent that despite the higher manufacturing costs of the transparent lining drum it is advantageous to use it for installing the liner in complex, thin and/or long pipelines. A further advantage of the transparent lining drum over the conventional ones with inspection doors is a decrease in losses since problem situations are detected straight away and it is possible to solve them before the liner becomes damaged or cured into a wrong position. The transparent lining drum enables the liner to be installed also in challenging pipelines wherein no attempt has even been made to install a liner by means of prior art lining drums but the pipeline renovation has been implemented in other manners.
[0014] It will be apparent to a person skilled in the art that as technology advances, the basic idea of the invention may be implemented in many different ways. The invention and its embodiments are thus not restricted to the examples described above but may vary within the scope of the claims.

Claims

Claims
1. A device for installing a liner in a pipeline, the device comprising a drum (10) provided therein with a shaft (14) for the liner to be installed to be wound on and stored around the shaft (14) rotatable by a crank (16) from outside the drum in order to unwind the liner from the shaft (14), the liner to be installed being arranged to exit from the device via an outlet (11, 12) in connection with the drum (10), the device being characterized in that at least a part of the device is manufactured from a transparent material and the proportion of the transparent material is more than 10% of the surface area of the drum (10) of the device.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the proportion of the transparent material in the surface area of the drum (10) is at least 20%, 30%, 40% or 50%.

A device as claimed in claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the outlet of the device comprises an output pipe (11) connected to the drum (10) such that the liner is removable from the shaft (14) via the output pipe (11 ) which comprises a transparent material for enabling the liner running in the output pipe to be monitored while using the device.
4. A device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that all sheet-like parts of the device are made of a transparent material.
5. A device as claimed in any one of preceding claims 1 to 3, characterized in that all tubular parts of the device are made of a transparent material.
6. A device as claimed in any one of preceding claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the transparent material comprises polycarbonate.
