Abstract

A detachable sound pickup and amplification system for flute and other musical instruments of the woodwind family (bamboo flute, bagpipes, side-blown flutes, flageolet, kaval, ney, etc.), which can be easily detached from the instrument by the musician him-/herself. The complete system (Figure 1) includes one or more microphone heads (Figure 2) mounted on the instrument and an outer preamplifier (11) (Figure 1), where preamplification, mixing and final processing of the microphone signal take place. The system presents high resistance to audio feedback, it does not reproduce nor amplify noises from the instrument itself (10) (e.g. from key's strokes, etc.), providing the musician with freedom of movement on stage, and simultaneously, it can be connected directly to pedals, effects units, mixing consoles, a Direct Inject box, etc.

Description

A detachable sound pickup and amplification system for flute and other musical instruments of the woodwind family.
This invention refers to a detachable sound pickup and amplification system for flute and other musical instruments of the woodwind family
(bamboo flute, bagpipes, side-blown flutes, flageolet, kaval, ney, etc.), which can be easily detached from the instrument by the musician him-/herself.
The solutions having been used up to the present include the use of a free-standing microphone mount, which literally nails the musician on stage at a certain distance therefrom, while it has inherent problems of audio feedback or other constructions mounted on the instruments, having drawbacks such as noise from the keys when playing, nonlinear frequency response, difficulty in securing them on the instruments, while some of them require modifications - interventions to the instruments themselves when they are attached to them. All of those solutions have the final signal be transmitted through connectors of a particular type (e.g. XLR), which makes its direct further processing through additional effects impossible, since those units use connectors of the line in/out type mostly.
The described construction consists of one or more microphone heads (Figure 2) mounted on the instrument with the help of an elastic clip/plate (3), each comprising a microphone capsule (1), a tube or rod (2), an elastic clip (plate) (3) damping material (4), a wedge/blade holder thereof (5), connectors/plugs (6), protection against wear and tear of the instruments (7), a shockproof washer (8), cable (12), and a preamplifier (11).
The capsule of the microphone (1) is clamped next to the lip plate (9) or the drone reed (e.g. in a bagpipe or a gaita) of the instrument (Figure
1) and may be dynamic, condenser, etc. It is mounted at the end of the electroconductive or non-electroconductive tube/rod (2) by an electroconductive or non-electroconductive adhesive/solder. The same tube/rod (2) (Figure 1) that is placed longitudinally of the instrument body (10) can be used (if it is electically conductive) for ground return (grounding and shielding) of the microphone signal, which through internal wiring of the tube is transferred to its other end to conductive terminals/plug (6) embedded in the tube/rod (2). Around the tube/rod (2) (Figure 2) an elastic shockproof washer (8) may be placed between the tube (2) and the body of the instrument (10) and also the elastic clip/plate (3) used for its securing by use of damping material (4) (rubber, gum, silicone or other). The length of the tube/rod (2) eliminates/absorbs the throb and other noise produced during instrument usage provided that the tube does not come in direct contact with the instrument body (10) and one of its ends is mounted on damping material (4). The clip/plate (3) (Figure 2) is flexible, metal or non-metal, and embraces the body of the instrument almost circumferentially (10). In the body of the clip (3), damping material (4) is encapsulated with the help of a plate/wedge (5), wherein the tube/rod is wedged and secured (2) longitudinally of the instrument body (10) (Figure 1). The ends of the clip
(3) are coated with material protecting from wear and tear of the instrument body (7) (Figures 1 & 2).
The microphone signal is transferred from the terminals (6) at the end of the tube (2) (Figure 1) to a small, light, portable preamplifier (11) attached (or not) to the instrument, which can be operated by battery or power supply. This microphone preamp should be able to boost the signal, mix and balance the signal output when two or more microphone heads are connected at the same time (Figure 2), e.g. in a bagpipe, to provide the necessary phantom power supply in order that the microphone(s) (1) operate (as in the case of an electret or condenser capsule), to turn off or mute the signal (mute switch), to control the final signal levels, to interrupt the ground line of connected equipment (ground lift), to have a phase reversal option, DI output, the possibility of adding sound effects, and to be able to have wireless connection with other sound processing and sound enhancement units, such as effects, pedals, audio mixing consoles, etc.
The low-impedance outlet, as in the case of a wired connection (11), should be a standard 6.3mm jack or an XLR connector, something that allows easy connection of the whole system to pedals, effects units, mixing consoles, etc., and can also have LED lights to indicate whether the effect is on or the battery level (where a battery is applicable), etc.
The complete pickup and amplification system can be easily attached to or detached from the instrument within seconds by the musician him-/herself, it presents high resistance to audio feedback, linear frequency response, it does not alter the natural sound and timbre of the instruments, it does not reproduce nor amplify noises from the instrument itself (10) (e.g. from key's strokes, etc.), providing the musician with freedom of movement on stage and full dynamic playing range, and simultaneously, it can be connected directly to pedals, effects units, mixing consoles, a Direct Inject box, etc.
