Definitions
- the present invention relates to household dishwashing machines and has been developed with particular reference made to dish-rack accessories for these machines.
- Household dishwashing machines usually comprise a washtub, housed within which are at least two extractable dish racks and at least two sprinklers, which are located usually one underneath the lower rack and the other underneath the upper rack.
- Certain dishwashers also include a third sprinkling member, set above the upper dish rack, for example a substantially shower-type sprinkler, mounted at the upper wall of the tub.
- the racks usually have a load-bearing structure formed by metal rods welded together and coated with plastic material, for example a polyamide-based material.
- dishware has to be arranged inside dish racks in a generally vertical position: this is typically the case of plates, whether flat plates or deep plates (where, for convenience, the term “deep plate” is here used to indicate what is normally referred to as “dish”).
- racks usually have series of supports set at a distance apart from one another, for keeping such items of dishware in an upright position, separated from one another, with their edge that rests substantially on the bottom of the structure of the rack. These supports rise substantially in the vertical direction from the bottom of the structure of the rack and also these are typically made up of coated metal rods in the form of pairs of parallel prongs or fingers.
- the prongs of one pair each belong to a respective movable element, which is articulated to the load-bearing structure of the rack in such a way that it can be displaced between a raised position and a reclined position.
- the movable element can be set in a reclined position when the corresponding prongs do not need to be used.
- the prongs are generally adjacent to the bottom of the structure of the rack and do not constitute a hindrance to positioning of other dishware.
- the distance between adjacent supports is usually chosen for supporting in an optimal way plates having a substantially standardised depth, i.e., a depth that corresponds to that of the majority of plates available on the market.
- dishwashing machines provided with dish-rack accessories, which can be positioned in a removable way on the structure of a dishwasher rack.
- dish-rack accessories which are generally configured as box-shaped or tray-shaped containers, are pre-arranged for containing cutlery (see, for example, EP2364636 Al) and small dishes and are not suitable for supporting plates.
- the main aim of the present invention is to provide a dish-holding accessory for a dishwasher rack presenting increased flexibility, utility and ease of use and handling for users.
- a further object of the invention is to produce such an accessory in a simple and inexpensive way.

- references to "an embodiment” or “one embodiment” in the framework of the present description is intended to indicate that a particular configuration, structure, or characteristic described in relation to the embodiment is comprised in at least one embodiment.
- terms such as “in an embodiment” or “in one embodiment” and the like that may be present in various points of the present description do not necessarily all refer to one and the same embodiment.
- the particular configurations, structures, or characteristics may be combined in any adequate way in one or more embodiments.
- the references used in what follows are provided merely for convenience and do not define the sphere of protection or the scope of the embodiments.
- the machine according to the invention comprises all the elements in themselves known for operation of a dishwasher, including a possible external cabinet thereof, a user interface, a control system, level-sensor means, a resistance for heating the water, a dispenser of washing agents, etc.
- FIG. 1 Represented schematically in Figure 1 is a dishwashing machine for household use according to a possible embodiment of the present invention.
- the machine 1 is illustrated limitedly to the parts of immediate interest for an understanding of the present invention.
- the machine 1 has a structure 2 that comprises a washtub 3, below of which is a housing space, located in which are various functional components of the machine 1, amongst which a washing pump 4, a discharge pump 5, part of a sump 6 for collecting the water, as well as other components (not represented in the figures) for requirements of greater clarity of the drawings.
- the washtub 3, which is of a conception as a whole known, comprises an upper wall, a lower wall, and four side walls, one of which - the front wall - is constituted by an internal shell of the door of the machine (here not represented ).
- a lower rack 7 and an upper rack 8, which are to contain respective loads of dishware.
- the racks 7 and 8 are mounted - via guides 7a and 8a in themselves known - so that they can be pulled out and/or removed through the front opening of the tub 3.
- the machine 1 has a sprinkler system, which includes a first sprinkling member 9, for spraying with water from beneath the dishes contained in a corresponding rack, here the lower rack 7.
- the sprinkler system also includes a second sprinkling member 10, for spraying with water from beneath the dishes contained in the upper rack 8.
- the sprinkler system of the machine 1 further comprises an upper sprinkler 11, set above the upper rack 8 of the machine, for example a sprinkler substantially of a rotary shower type, mounted at the upper wall of the tub 3.
- the sprinkler system is supplied by means of the washing pump 4, via a hydraulic circuit (not represented), of any type known in the field.
- the machine 1 comprises a dish-holding accessory according to the present invention, designated as a whole by 20, which can be positioned in a removable way in one of the racks 7, 8 of the machine 1.
- the structure of the rack 7 of the machine 1 is formed starting from a plurality of metal rods or wires 7a, which generally criss-cross one another and are welded together, preferably metal wires coated with a plastic material.
- the rack 7 has a generally quadrilateral shape, with two longitudinal walls S, as well as a front wall F and a rear wall R.
- the structure of the rack 7 then comprises a bottom, designated as a whole by B, which is at least in part plane. Coupled to the longitudinal walls S of the structure are guide devices (not represented) for enabling support of the rack 7 in the tub of the dishwasher, and removal of the rack therefrom.
- these devices may be of any conception known in the field and comprise, for example, wheels via which the rack 7 is slidably coupled to lateral telescopic guides mounted on the side walls of the tub 3, for example the guides 8a of Figure 1.
- the rack 7 may be provided with lower wheels 7b, which rest directly on purposely provided rolling tracks defined on the bottom of the tub or in the side walls thereof.
- the bottom B of the rack 7 is provided with supports for plates.
- some of these supports are fixed and constituted by pairs of fingers or prongs, set in parallel rows.
- These fixed prongs are formed by metal rods, which rise from the bottom B in a generally inclined position, for receiving between them plates to be supported in a generally upright position and separated from one another.
- the bottom B of the rack is moreover provided with movable supports for plates, which also include pairs of fingers or prongs arranged in parallel rows, each designated by 12.
- the prongs 12 are formed by metal rods set generally inclined, with a configuration and function similar to those of the prongs 1 1, but mounted movable.
- the prongs 12 of each row are connected to a respective rotatable element, here formed by a respective metal rod 13 generally parallel to the bottom B.
- the rod 13 is articulated to the bottom B of the rack in an axially rotatable way in such a way that the corresponding prongs 12 can be displaced manually between a raised position and a reclined position.
- the prongs 11 of each row have a pitch or mutual distance apart that is greater than the pitch of the prongs 12 of each row, the prongs 11 being designed to support deep plates, whereas the prongs 12 are designed to support flat plates.
- the pitch between the prongs 1 1, 12 is chosen according to the dimensions, and in particular the depth, of substantially standardised plates, i.e., of the ones most commonly available on the market.
- an accessory 20 according to the invention (clearly visible in Figures 4-6) is removably set, in particular resting on the bottom B.
- the accessory 20 has a structure that includes a respective series of supports for plates, designated by 21, generally aligned in a longitudinal direction of the accessory.
- the distance between adjacent supports for the plates - in the example here considered the pitch between the prongs 11 and the pitch between the prongs 12 - is usually chosen to support in an optimal way plates and deep plates having substantially standardised depths, i.e., in a range which encompasses most of plates and deep plates available on the market.
- the pitch between the supports envisaged by dish racks is chosen according to the dimensions of most widely used plates, the quality of positioning of differently sized plates is penalised, with a corresponding reduction in the quality of washing and drying of such dishware.
- the pitch or distance between the supports 21 is greater than the pitch between the prongs 11 or 12 of the rows that equip the structure of the rack 7.
- the supports 21 rise with respect to a resting base of the accessory 20, designated as a whole by 22 in such a way that between them there can be received plates that have to be held in a generally upright position and separated from one another.
- the accessory 20 is hence a plate-holder accessory, the supports 21 of which are preferably positioned for suitably supporting plates having a depth greater than that of the plates for which the prongs 11 and 12 are designed.
- the height of the supports 21 of the accessory is greater than that of the prongs 11, 12, also in view of a possible larger diameter of the plated to be supported. In this way, in the machine 1 there can be supported both plates of a commonly used type, by means of the series of prongs 11 and 12, and plates having a greater depth, with the aid of the accessory 20.
- the figures illustrate schematically the case where supported between some supports 21 of the accessory 20 are two deep plates 100, 101 having a depth greater than the normal depth, one of which (101) moreover having a larger than normal diameter.
- the structure of the plate-holder accessory 20 includes at least two lateral supporting elements 23 that extend substantially parallel in the longitudinal direction of the accessory itself, at two opposite longitudinal sides of its structure.
- the two lateral supporting elements 23 are at a greater height than the resting base 22 in order to define opposite resting points for the edges of the plates 100, 101 that can be arranged between the supports 21.
- the plates 100, 101 can be supported independently by the accessory 20, without any contribution by the structure of the rack 7 that houses the accessory inside the dishwasher.
- the weight of the plates is hence supported by the accessory, and this improves the stability thereof when it is positioned inside the rack 7, likewise reducing the risks of noise caused by possible vibrations during operation of the machine.
- the structure of the accessory 20 includes two grips, designated by 24, each at a longitudinal end of the accessory, for lifting it.
- This characteristic is particularly advantageous, in combination with the presence of the lateral supporting elements 23, in view of the fact that the accessory 20 can be removed from the rack 7.
- the grips 24, the accessory 20 can be easily displaced during the operations of loading and unloading dishes into/from the machine 1.
- the accessory 20 can be brought directly into a position close to a sink where the plates to be washed are accumulated and, after the dirty plates have been set between the supports 21, the accessory 20 can be set directly in the rack 7 of the dishwashing machine.
- the accessory 20 can function directly as support for plates inside a cabinet or else as drainer over a sink, when the accessory 20 does not need to be used in the dishwasher.
- the distance between the two lateral supporting elements 23 and their distance from the resting base 22 is such that the edges of the plates that can be rested on the two elements 23 does not pass beyond the bottom of the base 22.
- the mutual distance between the elements 23 and their height with respect to the base is chosen according to a minimum diameter of round plates for which the accessory can be used. In this way, at least for any round plate that can be supported between the elements 23, the corresponding edge will not exceed, at the bottom, the dimensions of the base 22.
- This characteristic is particularly advantageous in view of the fact that the accessory 20 can be removed and used outside the dishwasher 1, for example when the base 22 of the accessory is rested on a generic surface designated by S in Figure 6 (for example, a table, a sink, the worktop of a kitchen, the compartment of a cabinet, etc.).
- a generic surface designated by S in Figure 6 for example, a table, a sink, the worktop of a kitchen, the compartment of a cabinet, etc.
- the resting base 22 of the accessory 20 prefferably includes at least two base elements 22a, as in the case exemplified in the figures, which preferably extend substantially parallel to one another in the longitudinal direction, where the supports 21 rise from the two base elements 22a or are supported by them (for example, at least some of the supports 21 could rise from the side elements 23, with the latter supported by the base elements 22a).
- the supports 21 are formed by metal rods, in particular ones coated with a synthetic material, preferably a polyamide- based material similar to the one used for coating the rods that constitute commonly used dishwasher racks.
- each support 21 is formed by a bent metal rod, in particular substantially shaped like a U or a V set upside down, with two opposite ends connected to the base 22 or supported thereby.
- An embodiment of this sort enables an increase in the strength and stability of the structure of the accessory 20.
- each lateral supporting element 23 is preferably connected to a plurality of supports 21.
- the two lateral supporting elements 23 and/or the grips 24 are formed by metal rods, preferably coated like the rods that constitute the supports 21.
- the two lateral supporting elements 23 and the two grips 24 are formed by one and the same metal rod, to the advantage of sturdiness of the structure, as well as its simplicity of manufacture.
- the structure of the accessory 20 is prevalently one formed by metal rods welded together, and hence may be built using the same technologies as those adopted for the production of dishwasher racks.
- the accessory 20 represented comprises nine metal rods joined together, of which one provides the side elements 23 and the grips 24 and the other eight provide as many supports 21. There may then be provided two further longitudinal rods, in addition or as an alternative to the elements designated by 22a, to which the end areas of the supports 21 are welded.
- the resting base 22 of the structure of the accessory 20 can be pre-arranged for coupling with the structure of the rack 7 of the dishwasher 1.
- the elements 22a of its base have lower recesses 25 for engagement with metal rods 7a of the structure of the rack 7, as may be seen, for example, in Figure 4 (it should be noted that, in this figure, for requirements of greater clarity, elements of the rack 7 that are in the background with respect to the accessory 20 have not been represented).
- the two base elements 22a it is preferable for the two base elements 22a to include profiled elements made of plastic material, such as polypropylene or polyamide, as in the case exemplified.
- the base 22 can also include two longitudinal metal rods, to which the lower end areas of the supports 21 are welded, with the profiled elements 22a that are hooked to or overmoulded on the aforesaid longitudinal rods.
- the profiled elements 22a preferentially envisage also side or upper recesses for passage of the aforesaid end areas of the supports 21.
- the figures highlight the case of snap-action engagement of the profiled elements 22a on the longitudinal rods (not visible in the figures); in Figure 5, designated by 22a' is, for example, a tooth for engagement of the profiled element 22a to a corresponding longitudinal rod of the base 22.
- the relative dimensions of the accessory 20 and the rack 7 illustrated are merely indicative, it being possible for the accessory 20 to be also more extensive longitudinally and to be set with different orientation inside the rack.
- the width of the accessory 20, i.e., the distance between the two longitudinal elements 22a of the base 22, is in any case preferentially greater than the distance between two parallel series of prongs 12 so that the latter do not interfere with the accessory when they are in the reclined position.
- the base of the accessory 20 may also include one or more transverse elements, for example with an overall quadrangular configuration or else with a C-shaped configuration.
- the aforesaid transverse elements may comprise metal rods and/or corresponding plastic elements of the type designated by 22a
- the longitudinal metal rods of the base 22, with or without corresponding covering profiled elements of the type designated by 22a, may be shaped so as to cooperate with the rods of the rack 8, in particular of its bottom B, for enabling positioning of the accessory, for example by defining depressions that perform functions like those of the recesses designated by 25.
- the dishwasher according to the invention may also be provided with a number of accessories 20.
