Description
ACCESSORY FOR & FASTENER
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
THIS invention relates to an accessory for a fastener. More specifically, the invention relates to an accessar for a fastener in the form of a frangible, quick release washer interposafole between a bolt-iike fastener (i.e. bolts, studs, shanks, shafts) and a nut for in use, enabling the controlled release of tension acting between the bolt-like fastener d t e nut for the purposes of quickly loosening the nut.
It is envisaged that one or many applications of th invention is for use in conjunction with rotary power tools, such an angle grinder, typically comprising a shank on which a cutting disc is seeurable by a nut.
In use, th nut becomes overly tightened by the rotary action of the power tool, making the loosening of the nut very difficult, Typically, the nut comprises a formation by whic it may be engaged b a wrench for the purposes of loosening and/or tightening,
However, ove time these formations wear allowing slip between the wrench and the nut making loosening of the nut very difficult. Where the nut simply cannot be loosened wit the wrench, users tend to turn to methods that tend to damage the nut and/or power tool, i.e. a chisel and hammer.
In an attempt to address the damaging and time-consuming problems of the above described wrench loosening method, many types of quick release nuts have been developed. One such quick release nut is described in US patent application no. 2009/169336. Although quick release nuts appear to solve aforementioned problems, they tend to be overly engineered devices that are very expensive. ft is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a cheap, disposable quick release washer type accessory for a fastener that addresses the disadvantages of the prior art methods and device set out above.

In use, the accessory 10 is in the first position with th extracting pull ring 18 and th annular space membe 16 lying substantially concentrically and copfanar wit one another as illustrated in figure 4.A.
To remove the cutting disc 210 from the angle grinder 200, a user with his finger(s) grips the lifting tab 42 to raise and angularl displace the etfttactirig pull ring 18 relative to the annular spacer member 16, thereby causing the extracting pull ring 18 to break from the annular spacer member 16 at the frangible posts 40 as illustrated in figure 4 .
With reference ho to figure 4C, as the extracting pull ring 18 continues to angularly displace about the connection zone 36, the extracting pull ring 18 and mor specifically the pull tab 42, move upwardly and over the nut 230 substantiall into the second position.
With a radially outwardly pull force "F" exerted by 'the user on the extracting pull ring 18, the annular spacer member 16 fragments along the frangible line 32 as is illustrated in figure 4D. As the extracting pull ring 18 is continually pulled by the user, the extracting pull ring 18 and th fragmented annular spacer member 16 is removed from between the load-bearing washers 12, 14 such that the load-bearing washers 12, 14 become axiaily dispiaceabte relative to one another. it will be appreciated that the axial displacement of the load-bearing; washers 12, 14 towards one another releases the tension between the shank 220 and the nut 230, consequently enabling the nut 230 to be quickly and easily loosened from the shank 220.
Although the invention has been described above with reference to preferred embodiments, It will be appreciated that man modifications or variations of the
inventlon are possible without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. For example, and with reference to figure 5, the accessory 10 may be secured and/or integral with the cutting disc 210 instead of being a separate component as heresn described.
