Description

Personalized Guidance System
Field of the invention
[0001] The present invention is generally related to the field of systems for guiding a passenger, traveller or visitor to his destination inside a public or semi-public area.
Background of the invention
[0002] Today travellers in public transport suffer from stress of not finding their (reserved) seat. Increased levels of passenger stress lead to higher number of assaults on train personnel, just to give an example.
[0003] Also train operators are interested in ways to allow passengers to find quickly their seats, in order to decrease the dwell times in stations.
[0004] In stations, airports etc... it would help if travellers have better (personalized) ways to find their destinations (platform, gate, ...).
[0005] A lot of personalized approaches make use of handheld solutions, meaning the traveller still has to take the handheld device, such as e.g., a smartphone, out of his pocket, fumble with apps, orient the device in the right direction, read maps, bend over his neck ... while the traveller still has to manage his luggage, trolleys, children, boarding tickets, passport, ...
[0006] In the prior art solutions it is necessary to move in the train in order to find a vacant seat or to take the non-reserved seat, e.g. on a long-distance train. In JP2008/287499 a solution is disclosed to overcome the lack of a service providing train passengers with vacant seat information and vacant seat prediction information to guide them to a vacant seat. The proposed on-board vacant seat guide system comprises a vacant seat reservation means for accepting a reservation from a passenger desiring a vacant seat guide service. A plurality of seat information confirmation means are provided for confirming the vacancy of each seat and for reading information of the electronic ticket of a seated person. A vacant seat management means determines the vacant seat guide order from the information of the electronic ticket and transmits a vacant seat guide notification to the electronic ticket. The system makes use of display means provided on handheld devices of the passengers.
[0007] Handheld solutions are thus known in the art, but they have as important drawbacks that the passenger still has to hold the device in his hands and to point his eyes away from his environment in order to find his way.
[0008] Hence, there is a need for an improved, comfortable system for guiding a person to a destination within a certain area. Summary of the invention
[0009] It is an object of embodiments of the present invention to provide for a system and method for guiding a person who looks for his/her destination in a delimited area, while avoiding the need for said person to constantly having to look and hold his personal device.
[0010] The above objective is accomplished by the solution according to the present invention.
[0011] In a first aspect the invention relates to a system for guiding a person to a destination in a delimited area, said system comprising
- localisation means arranged for locating a person in a delimited area, said person being associated to a dedicated identification sign,
- storage means for storing information of the person in the delimited area, said information at least comprising a destination in the delimited area,
- display means arranged in the delimited area for displaying guidance information for guiding the person in the delimited area,
- processing means in connection with the localisation means, the storage means and the display means and arranged for calculating a path for the person to the destination and for displaying on or forwarding to the display means dedicated information to guide the person via the calculated path to the destination, thereby exploiting the dedicated identification sign of the person.
[0012] The proposed solution indeed allows for guiding the person to the intended destination. Via the localisation means it is known that the person is located in the delimited area, e.g. a railway station, airport, hospital, ... As detailed below the localisation means can be linked to some service for which the purchase of a ticket is required. Somewhere in the system information is stored about the person, said information at least containing an indication of where in the delimited area the person is heading to. The guidance proposed in the present invention exploits the fact that to each person a dedicated identification sign is assigned. Once the person is located in the delimited area, the calculation of a path to the destination is triggered. On the display means of the proposed system can then be displayed dedicated information for guiding the person to his destination along the calculated path. The display means can be any signage system. The dedicated information is derived in the processing means and advantageously exploits the dedicated identification sign that has been attributed to the person.
[0013] In a preferred embodiment the dedicated identification sign is a colour, a sign, a picture, a photograph or a graphical avatar being a recognizable representation of a person, animal, character or object. The advantage of using signs, pictures, photographs is that the system can also be used by colour blind or colour impaired people.
[0014] In one embodiment the localisation means comprises a check-in service and/or a ticketing service. For example, buying a ticket for attending a theatre play starting at a given hour or a ticket for a certain train or flight leaving at a predetermined hour may already give an indication that the person short before that time is likely to be located in the neighbourhood.
[0015] In a preferred embodiment the storage means is part of a seat reservation system.
[0016] Advantageously, the localisation means is arranged for localizing the person while moving in the delimited area.
[0017] In a preferred embodiment the system is arranged for indicating to said person, based on information from said localisation means, that said destination is within reach.
[0018] In another embodiment the system is arranged for generating a signal to stop the guidance when said localisation means indicate that said person has reached said destination.
[0019] In one embodiment the dedicated information comprises an indication of the direction to follow.
[0020] In another embodiment the display means comprises one or more passenger information displays and/or one or more seat reservation displays.
[0021] In one embodiment the display means comprises one or more projectors arranged for projecting the dedicated identification sign on a floor, ceiling or wall.
[0022] In an advantageous embodiment the display means comprises LED indicators or lighting means.
[0023] In one embodiment the processing means is arranged for transmitting said dedicated information only to display means in the neighbourhood of the location of said person.
[0024] In another aspect the invention relates to a method for guiding a person to a destination in a delimited area, said method comprising
- locating a person in a delimited area, said person being associated to a dedicated identification sign,
- calculating a path for said person to said destination,
- displaying on display means in said delimited area dedicated information to guide said person via said calculated path to said destination, thereby exploiting said dedicated identification sign of said person.
[0025] In a preferred embodiment the delimited area is a public transport area.
[0026] In another embodiment calculating the path takes into account one or more characteristics known about the person, such as his/her reduced mobility. For example, the calculated path for a healthy person makes use of escalators, while the calculated path for a wheelchair user or a mother with small children in a stroller makes use of elevators.
[0027] For purposes of summarizing the invention and the advantages achieved over the prior art, certain objects and advantages of the invention have been described herein above. Of course, it is to be understood that not necessarily all such objects or advantages may be achieved in accordance with any particular embodiment of the invention. Thus, for example, those skilled in the art will recognize that the invention may be embodied or carried out in a manner that achieves or optimizes one advantage or group of advantages as taught herein without necessarily achieving other objects or advantages as may be taught or suggested herein.
[0028] The above and other aspects of the invention will be apparent from and elucidated with reference to the embodiment(s) described hereinafter.

Thus, the scope of the expression "a device comprising means A and B" should not be limited to devices consisting only of components A and B. It means that with respect to the present invention, the only relevant components of the device are A and B.
[0037] Reference throughout this specification to "one embodiment" or "an embodiment" means that a particular feature, structure or characteristic described in connection with the embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present invention. Thus, appearances of the phrases "in one embodiment" or "in an embodiment" in various places throughout this specification are not necessarily all referring to the same embodiment, but may. Furthermore, the particular features, structures or characteristics may be combined in any suitable manner, as would be apparent to one of ordinary skill in the art from this disclosure, in one or more embodiments.
[0038] Similarly it should be appreciated that in the description of exemplary embodiments of the invention, various features of the invention are sometimes grouped together in a single embodiment, figure, or description thereof for the purpose of streamlining the disclosure and aiding in the understanding of one or more of the various inventive aspects. This method of disclosure, however, is not to be interpreted as reflecting an intention that the claimed invention requires more features than are expressly recited in each claim. Rather, as the following claims reflect, inventive aspects lie in less than all features of a single foregoing disclosed embodiment. Thus, the claims following the detailed description are hereby expressly incorporated into this detailed description, with each claim standing on its own as a separate embodiment of this invention.
[0039] Furthermore, while some embodiments described herein include some but not other features included in other embodiments, combinations of features of different embodiments are meant to be within the scope of the invention, and form different embodiments, as would be understood by those in the art. For example, in the following claims, any of the claimed embodiments can be used in any combination.
[0040] It should be noted that the use of particular terminology when describing certain features or aspects of the invention should not be taken to imply that the terminology is being redefined herein to be restricted to include any specific characteristics of the features or aspects of the invention with which that terminology is associated. [0041] In the description provided herein, numerous specific details are set forth. However, it is understood that embodiments of the invention may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known methods, structures and techniques have not been shown in detail in order not to obscure an understanding of this description.
[0042] The present invention describes a comfortable solution in which a plurality of available public visualization systems inside the travel environment are used. The travel environment can for example be an airport, station, platform, train, ... The proposed solutions can however also be applied to non-public transport environments (nursery homes, hospitals, schools, hotels, theatres... ), in other words, to any public or semi-public environment, both indoor and outdoor, where public displays are used.
[0043] The invention discloses in one aspect a passenger guidance system for a train environment. A schematic overview of a system according to an embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Fig.l. The passenger guidance server (106) has access to a database (101) containing at least a set of unique records each comprising at least one unique identifier (102), a destination (103) and an identification sign (104). Typically for a train environment the database is (part of) a seat reservation system.
[0044] There can be a one-to-one link between the unique identifier and the passenger or visitor. However, in case the database system contains also time information or information about more than one train or information about multiple events (in case of a concert hall or movie theatre for example), it is possible that several records are associated with one passenger or visitor. In one embodiment the database also contains data such as WiFi MAC addresses, Bluetooth IDs, ... linked to one passenger, which can be used by the localization engine.
In a train environment, the destination (103) can be stored as seat number, seat number + car number, seat number + car number + train number or similar. In other environments the destination can be stored e.g. as patient room number.
The identification sign (104) can be stored as a digital file format, such as a picture format (JPG, PNG, ...), an animated picture format (MJPEG, SWF, FLV, ... ) or can be stored as a link to one of these files.
[0045] The localization engine (105) estimates the passenger/visitor location during the time of the guidance process. This engine can be implemented as a software program which provides as output the complete delimited area and which only puts a limit in the time domain on the location of the passenger or visitor. In a more complex implementation, this engine makes use of calculations and prediction algorithms to estimate a more precise location of the passenger, such as calculation based on last known location, estimation or assumption of walking speed and knowledge about the proposed path. In an even more complex implementation this method is combined with actual specialized localization means such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices, WiFi triangulation and/or other well-known techniques. In an even more complex implementation this method is combined with an even more complex localization means, where a personal device, such as a smartphone, belonging to and carried by the passenger, sends it location and/or other localization info (GPS coordinates, step counter or accelerator sensor info, air pressure sensor info, BLE info, Wifi info) through wireless means to a central localization server.
[0046] The passenger guidance server manages the system and uses the information from the database and the localization engine to address the digital signage system (107) and the seat reservation system (108).
[0047] In one embodiment the localization engine and the guidance server are integrated in one server. In another embodiment the guidance server and the database server are integrated in one server.
[0048] The passenger is associated to a dedicated identification sign, being a symbol or an avatar or a cartoon or a photo or similar. There are many ways to associate a dedicated identification sign with a passenger. One option is that the passenger chooses this dedicated sign from a list of abstract symbols when purchasing the ticket. Alternatively, the passenger is automatically proposed a selection of his social media profile pictures from which he can choose one. The passenger can also create his dedicated sign. This dedicated identification sign can be valid for one journey only (for example in case of an abstract sign) or can be fixed, i.e. selected for once and for all.
[0049] The passenger guidance system uses a localization means allowing locating a particular passenger in the area in question. The localization means can be a point of interaction with the passenger (ticket scanner, fingerprint reader, ....) or/and specific localization means, for example using well known technologies such as Bluetooth 4.0 (perimeter definition), WiFi triangulation, electronic beacons, GPS, ...
[0050] The passenger guidance system of the invention further requires a passenger seat reservation system or a system wherein information on the optimal seat for the particular passenger is stored.
[0051] Public display means, such as displays for displaying passenger information and seat reservation information and (non-personalized) passenger guidance information are essential as well. In the proposed solution, the display means can be any signage system.
[0052] Further a processing unit is provided arranged for performing the following functions :
- linking the detected passenger with the seat reserved by the passenger by means of the seat reservation system, or linking the detected passenger with an optimal seat location, - calculating the best path for the passenger to the reserved or optimal seat,
- displaying the calculated path to guide the passenger to the reserved seat exploiting said dedicated representation sign/identification sign of the passenger (on the visualization systems available on the train, such as the passenger information and seat reservation displays), including managing, selecting and addressing at every time instant the components of the display means near the passenger.
[0053] The digital signage system (107) can be linked to the guidance system (106) in several ways. In one embodiment the guidance system has knowledge about the location of each display (digital signage display (109), seat reservation display (110)) along the optimal path between the best estimated location of the passenger or visitor and the destination of the passenger or visitor. The guidance system sends command data and content data to the digital signage system. A command data packet contains the unique ID of the intended display, and optionally the time indication when to start displaying the identification sign (104,111) and one time indication when to stop displaying the identification sign. The content data packet contains the identification sign in an appropriate digital file format, such as a picture format (JPG, PNG, ...), an animated picture format (MJPEG, SWF, FLV, ... ), ... and contains also a direction indication in which direction the visitor is guided to move in order to follow the optimal path. In another embodiment the guidance system sends one command data packet to start displaying the content and one command data packet to stop displaying the content. In another embodiment the content data packet also contains a time-out value, after which displaying of the identification sign must be stopped. In another embodiment the commands are sent in process data packets, which are repeated on a continuous basis.
[0054] Fig.2 illustrates an example of an "avatar" showing the way to the passenger's reserved seat when the passenger enters the train. Fig.3 shows another example of an "avatar" showing the direction towards the reserved seat.
[0055] In one embodiment the display means for personalized passenger guidance information comprises a number of public displays available in the train environment, including the on-board and off-board passenger information displays and seat reservation displays.
[0056] The display means for personalized passenger guidance information comprises in another embodiment (a network of) projectors installed in the train environment, which project the dedicated sign on the floor, ceiling, walls or an object near the passenger.
[0057] The display means for personalized passenger guidance information may comprise a combination of public displays and (a network of) projectors installed in the train environment.
[0058] Many options are available for the dedicated identification sign. It can be an animated
"avatar" that guides the passenger through gestures. An 'avatar' is an animated recognizable representation of a (fictitious or non-fictitious) person, animal or character. The identification sign can also be an unanimated "avatar" which guides the passenger through arrows or an animated "avatar" which guides the passenger by walking or running ahead.
[0059] In one embodiment of the invention the dedicated sign not only comprises a 3- dimensional (animated character) or 2-dimensional (picture, abstract symbol) component, but also a 1-dimensional component (line), which follows the calculated path and which is easily recognizable by means of colour, thickness, shape (dotted, dashed, ...) and others (colour profile, ... ).
[0060] To the dedicated features of the dedicated identification sign do not only belong colour and shape, but also the way the direction is shown (static picture with arrow, such as in the first picture) or animation, the animation itself (animated walking, animated running for example) and the movement pattern (slow, fast, running, sliding, jumping, ... ).
[0061] In order to help the traveller in an optimal way, the traveller should be able to see his dedicated identification sign with regular time intervals during his movement through the transport area. In an ideal situation, the dedicated identification sign is visible at all times during his movement through the transport area.
[0062] In one embodiment of the invention the current position of the traveller is well known at all times. In order not to overload the public information displays, the dedicated representation signs are shown or projected only on displays and objects that are close to (meaning in sight of) the known position of the passenger.
[0063] In one embodiment of the invention the current position of the traveller is not well known at all times. In order not to overload the public information displays, the dedicated representation signs are shown/projected only on displays and objects that are close to (meaning in sight of) the assumed (or most probable location) of the position of the traveller. The assumed position of the passenger is calculated by extrapolations of the traveller movement along the indicated path since the last known position, experience of the system and other calculations.
[0064] In one embodiment of the invention, the current position of the traveller is not well known at all times. In order not to overload the public information displays, the dedicated representation signs are shown or projected only on displays and objects that are close to (meaning in sight of) the most and less than most probable positions of the traveller. These positions of the passenger are calculated by extrapolations of the most and less than most possible movements of the traveller along or drifting away from the indicated path, experience of the system and other calculations.
[0065] In one embodiment of the invention, the current position of the traveller is not well known at all times. In order not to overload the public information displays, the dedicated representation signs are shown/projected only on displays and objects that are close to (meaning in sight of) all possible positions of the traveller. These positions of the passenger are calculated by extrapolations of all possible movements of the traveller along or drifting away from the indicated path, experience of the system and other calculations.
[0066] In one embodiment of the invention, the traveller is also guided by indications that he has drifted away from the calculated path, and the traveller is shown how to proceed further towards his destination.
[0067] In one embodiment of the invention, in order not to overload the public information displays, the system is fed with a signal when the traveller has reached his destination. Upon receiving this signal the system stops the guidance for this particular passenger.
[0068] In one embodiment of the invention, in order not to overload the public information displays, the system stops the guidance of the traveller when the system can detect or assume, based on extrapolations and other calculations and experience, that the particular traveller has reached his destination.
[0069] In one embodiment of the invention, the system displays the dedicated identification sign multiple times, such as one 2-dimensional sign running towards the destination of the traveller every x seconds, such that the traveller has to follow a "hurdle" of his dedicated identification signs.
[0070] In another aspect the invention relates to a passenger guidance system for any transport or (semi-)public environment. The system then comprises
- localization means allowing the detection of a particular passenger or visitor entering the public transport or (semi-public) area (station, airport, platform, train, school, hospital, ... ) and possibly moving inside the public transport or (semi-)public area, this passenger or visitor being associated to a dedicated identification sign (being a symbol or an avatar or a cartoon or a photo or similar)
- ticketing system or other system which provides information about the destination of the particular passenger inside this said public transport or (semi-)public area,
- display means for public information; in one embodiment the display means are projectors which project the dedicated identification sign on the floor, on the ceiling, on the wall or on any object near the passenger.
- a processing unit arranged for the following functions :
* linking the detected passenger with the destination of passenger inside said public transport area
* calculating the best path for said passenger to the destination of passenger inside said public transport area * displaying the calculated path to guide the passenger to the destination of passenger inside said public transport area exploiting said dedicated representation sign / identification sign of the passenger [0071] A typical use case of the present invention is illustrated in the flow chart of Fig.4. In this example the proposed approach is triggered by a person buying a ticket for a long-distance journey by train. During the purchase of the ticket, the person is associated with a dedicated identifier (402). The system uses the available means (like ticket scanners, Bluetooth Low Energy scanners, ... ) to detect if the person can be located in the station (403, 404). In case there are no dedicated person detection systems (like ticket scanners, BLE scanners, ... ) the system estimates based on reservation number and time if it can be assumed that the person has entered the station or not. Once the system assumes the person is in station, the system furthers uses the available means (e.g. Bluetooth Low Energy scanners, WiFi triangulation, ...) to locate the person in the station (405). The person is then guided towards his reserved seat by showing personalized guiding information on public displays (406) making use of the dedicated identifier associated with that person. Close to the destination of the person (the reserved seat) (407), the person is alerted of being close to his reserved seat, as the properties of the associated symbol are changed (movement, colour, flashing, etc) (408). In case there is a system to detect the passenger has taken place in his seat (409), the guidance process stops. In case there is no detection system, the guidance process stops when the guidance system can assume the passenger has taken his seat (for example, at the time of departure of the train) or when the guidance system has no added value any more (train arriving in next station, for example).
[0072] The invention discloses in one aspect a comfortable solution where a plurality of digital signage displays inside a hospital or nursery home are used. More and more public digital signage displays are used in hospitals and nursery homes for diverse reasons and applications, such as dynamic catering information, information about events, queue information etc. In an embodiment of the invention for a nursery home or a hospital, the visitor provides upon entering the hospital/nursery home his destination towards the guidance system via an interactive screen or via a human intervention, e.g, with a receptionist's help, and is then associated to a dedicated identification sign. His destination can be the room of the patient he wants to visit. At the same time, the guidance system estimates the location of the visitor at that time. In another embodiment a visitor of a hospital is associated to a dedicated identification sign when making his appointment with a doctor or caretaker. Upon entering the hospital, the visitor presents his appointment to the guidance system, via an interactive screen or via human intervention, e.g, with a receptionist's help. The guidance system estimates the location of the visitor at that time. From this moment on the guidance system provides the digital signage system with the data required to guide the visitor.
[0073] While the invention has been illustrated and described in detail in the drawings and foregoing description, such illustration and description are to be considered illustrative or exemplary and not restrictive. The foregoing description details certain embodiments of the invention. It will be appreciated, however, that no matter how detailed the foregoing appears in text, the invention may be practiced in many ways. The invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments.
[0074] Other variations to the disclosed embodiments can be understood and effected by those skilled in the art in practicing the claimed invention, from a study of the drawings, the disclosure and the appended claims. In the claims, the word "comprising" does not exclude other elements or steps, and the indefinite article "a" or "an" does not exclude a plurality. A single processor or other unit may fulfil the functions of several items recited in the claims. The mere fact that certain measures are recited in mutually different dependent claims does not indicate that a combination of these measures cannot be used to advantage. A computer program may be stored/distributed on a suitable medium, such as an optical storage medium or a solid-state medium supplied together with or as part of other hardware, but may also be distributed in other forms, such as via the Internet or other wired or wireless telecommunication systems. Any reference signs in the claims should not be construed as limiting the scope.
