Kozlow, U.S. Pat. No. 4,182,449,
Etheredge, U.S. Pat. No. 5,333,753,
Turngren, et al., U.S. Pat. No. 5,891 ,078. Background of the invention
Over the years, there have been many inventions and products that apply an article onto a surface. Generally, an article has an adhesive side which is then applied to a surface.
Some of these products have a separate package and applicator, in which it is needed for the article to first be taken out of the package, and then applied either by an applicator or by hand, onto a surface. Some of these products incorporate a package and an applicator in order to facilitate the application of the article onto the surface and save time and effort, and also to cut down on manufacturing costs.
There is a plurality of products in which an applicator is incorporated with a package that holds content which needs to be applied onto a surface. One of the most crowded fields in which a package includes an application function is the field of packaging and application of sterile adhesive bandages. There are dozens of patents and a plurality of diverse methods which attempt to successfully incorporate an applicator and a package holding an adhesive bandage in order to facilitate the storage, protection and application of an adhesive bandage onto the skin. A reason for which this field is crowded may be that adhesive bandages are a very common household medical product which is packaged and sold in a multitude of variations which are designed for different types of applications. A second reason may be that there is a need for sterility of the packaged adhesive bandage before and during application, and therefore another layer of protection is needed, unlike, for example, packaging for a sticker or a label in which sterility is of diminished importance.
There may be six distinctive components which are a part of the procedure in which the article is stored, protected and then applied onto a surface. These components include the following: a user who applies the article onto the surface; an article, which usually has an adhesive side; a pack which contains and protects individual packages holding protected articles; packaging which protects an article until application; an applicator which assists in applying an article onto a surface; and a surface, onto which an article is applied by a user. It should be noted that in a case where an applicator is incorporated into a package, there may be five distinctive components which take part in the protection and application of an adhesive- sided article onto a surface, combining packaging with application.
A user may be an experienced professional in the application of an article, such as a nurse or professional caregiver; or someone inexperienced, such as a child, an elderly person or a handicapped person. Therefore, there is a need for the application procedure to remain simple, and there is a need for the procedure to limit the possibility of errors by a user during application. An article may come in a plurality of sizes and formats and in various levels of sterilization and protection due to risks of possible contamination, contact with air, gases, liquids, pollutants, temperature changes, light, moisture, shock or any other factor which may damage the efficacy of an article or its components. In addition, it may be needed to mix a substance with an article before application. An example of such a substance is water, which may be added to an article in order to activate an adhesive side. The water may be added either by penetration through a membrane within the package, and therefore retaining sterilization; or through an opening in the package, which then exposes the article to contact with the environment. Therefore, there may be a need to obtain suitable separation between the article- holding chamber and the environment.
A pack, which holds the individual packages, in case where a single package is not sold as a separate unit, may be in many shapes, sizes and materials. The pack should allow easy access to individual packages and retain them in suitable conditions until they are used later on.
A Package, or packaging, of an individual adhesive-sided article, which may or may not incorporated an applicator, should accommodate and protect the article, using materials and techniques which assist in keeping the article in its desired condition until application. A package should be cost effective in material selection, manufacturing and packing. A package should be easily opened. It is needed that such an operation may be performed without the assistance of additional tools such as gloves, scissors or a user's teeth, for example.
An applicator, which may be either incorporated or separate, should be efficient and allow simple and precise application of an article onto a surface in a position chosen by the user, all done in the shortest period of time possible and with the minimum amount of steps to be taken. If so needed, it may be needed to retain a separation between a user and an article until the article is applied onto the surface. This separation is needed in order to avoid contamination of the article by the user during application and may also assist in the prevention of degradation of the adhesive side of the article by contact between the user and the adhesive side of the article. Another reason is to avoid the possibility of the adhesive side of the article fold onto itself which may make it very difficult to separate or even make it unusable for application. Yet another reason is that in certain articles, such as transdermal patches, the pad is medicated and therefore any contact between the pad and the user may result in absorption of the medication by the user. Also, if possible, it could be useful to have the adhesive side of the article have as little possible contact with the environment in order to avoid airborne contamination or oxidation or any other possible harm, making the article less efficient or even destroying the article.
A surface, onto which the article is to be applied, could be of any type, and may include skin, a metal surface, an electronic touch screen, a wall, a table, vehicle surfaces, and a plurality of other surfaces. Therefore, it may be needed to use suitable adhesives such as glues, magnets, or any other type of adhesive material, which may be best suited for the application. There may also be a need for the treatment of the surface before application, for example when using a sterilization gauze to clean the skin surface before application of a transdermal patch, or in order to wet an area of a surface with a liquid in order to activate a soluble adhesive surface on an article.
Since there may be a larger number of variations of users, surfaces, and articles than other components which comprises the application of an adhesive sided article onto a surface, it may be useful to alter the design and functionality of a pack, a package and an applicator. Therefore, listed below are possible preferences for characteristics of a pack, a package and an applicator, which may assist the operation of applying an adhesive backed article onto a surface:
1. It is needed that a pack be simple to open and cost effective to manufacture. For example, if there is a need for an adhesi ve bandage to be removed from its package by the use of an expensive dispenser, the cost effectiveness of the procedure may be compromised.
2. It is needed that a package and an applicator be combined into one unit in order to facilitate use and application, and in order to reduce the cost of separate components in manufacturing.
3. It is further needed that there be the least number of components possible for the package.
4. It is further needed that individual packages be packed together in such a way in which it is possible to further reduce the number of components which may further reduce manufacturing costs and may facilitate removal of a single package from a pack.
5. It is further needed that each of those components of a single package have as many functions as possible in order to reduce costs and raise efficiency.
6. It is needed that there be a basic universal design of a package incorporating an applicator which may be used for a plurality of applications in any field in which this type of package and applicator may facilitate application. This universal design could benefit from the use of a variety of materials, shapes and dimensions in order to accommodate and apply different types of articles under diverse conditions, to a plurality of surfaces under different types of environmental conditions. 7. It is further needed that a basic universal design be flexible in a manner that would facilitate an addition of chambers, substances and aids in manufacturing without drastic alterations.
8. It is needed that the article, as recognized in the field as a standard article, shall not have an additional component or components, which could compromise the cost-effectiveness of manufacturing. For example, if there is a need to redesign an adhesive bandage in order to allow easier application, it may compromise the cost effectiveness in comparison to other adhesive bandages on the market.
9. It is further needed to remove any additional component that may be omitted in order to make the product more cost effective. For example, if there is a possibility of applying an adhesive bandage without the use of additional release sheets which are placed on the adhesive area of the bandage, it is needed in order to reduce manufacturing costs.
10. It is needed that a user have no contact, or as little contact as possible, with an article until the article is applied to a surface. This may be needed in order to lower the risk of damage or contamination to either the article or the user. For example, in the application of transdermal patches, contact prior to application onto the patient's skin may damage the patch or contaminate the skin of the person applying the patch by transferring medication.
1 1. It is needed that there be a possibility to position an article on or in proximity to the estimated target area before application.
12. It is further needed that the positioning of an article is accomplished without opening a package before application, therefore retaining the conditions of the article chamber.
13. It is needed that the article be applied using one hand. Further, in cases where the application is made by more than one person, it is needed that the application be made by one person.
14. It is needed that an article be applied by any person, no matter the amount of experience or limitations that person might possess.
15. It is needed that the application would take as little time and as fewer steps as possible.
Background - Prior Art - Adhesive Bandages
Over the last decades, continued refinements have been made to the design of dispensing bandages and other sterile devices. A plurality of sterile devices is commonly contained in an interconnected series of sterile packages and therefore, the removal of each sterile device from the package needs contact by the user. In order to avoid contamination during removal and handling, protective gloves may be worn, but this may be time consuming, non-economical and not efficient. There is a variety of planar substrates which is needed to be individually packaged to preserve cleanliness of the substrate, the most common of which is a self-adhesive bandage having an adhesive-coated end portions opposing each other and a sterile central pad portion between them. In order to preserve the sterility of the pad portion, such self- adhesive bandages are normally packaged in individually sealed envelope packages.
There are several problems with the use of such envelopes. First, the envelopes are frequently difficult to open and usually require tearing open the envelope using an internally attached piece of thread. Manipulating this piece of thread can be difficult, especially if wearing protective gloves. Moreover, occasionally the internal attachment of the thread breaks, disabling the entire opening mechanism. Other envelope types used to seal adhesive bandages may require pulling two peeling tabs at once, a task that normally needs further separation of the bandage from the envelope, or if the envelope is completely open exposing the whole bandage, the bandage itself might fall on the ground, risking contamination and further frustration with the application of the adhesive bandage. Second, once the envelope is opened, the bandage may have peel-off tabs which make the application longer and are frustrating to remove. The difficulty in removing the peel-off tabs is magnified when the caregiver is wearing protective gloves. Typically, such gloves are made from a very thin material to which the adhesive on the bandage readily attaches. Accordingly, it can seem almost impossible to manipulate a simple self-adhesive bandage from package to patient by a caregiver wearing protective gloves. Once the adhesive bandage is exposed, it is difficult to administer the bandage without contaminating the sterile pad and without becoming entangled with the adhesive-coated ends. Furthermore, if all the previous steps of removing the adhesive bandage from its cover, pulling the peel-off tabs away from the bandage, the task of positioning and applying the adhesive bandage by holding it by its adhesive ends onto the preferred target area may be somewhat difficult.
There are several disadvantages of the existing systems for application of adhesive dressing, bandages and patches, transdermal patches, and applicators, onto the skin. Gilbert et al., U.S. Pat. No. 5,052,381, in one embodiment, describes an adhesive film having two release sheets, whereas one is of shorter length than the other, but each strippably adhered to an adhesive coating on a bandage film, and the shorter sheet folded back a short distance to form a tab. A disadvantage of this embodiment is that the release sheets are not folded back completely across their inner layers to extend beyond the ends of the bandage so as to provide pull tabs within ends of the package. Another disadvantage is that the adhesive bandage is needed to first be physically removed from their packages before pulling their tabs to apply them. Kozlow, U.S. Pat. No. 4,182,449, discloses a bandage wherein the users need to place their fingers near the sterile pad in order to remove the lining, thus increasing the risk of contact and contamination of the sterile pad. Etheredge, U.S. Pat. No. 5,333,753, discloses a design that provides the removal of the adhesive bandage and liner but needs skill in the application, as the opened package needs the use of both hands during application of the bandage. In addition, as the package is folded over itself, it is difficult for the user to determine the size of the bandage contained therein before the package is opened.
Turngren, et al., U.S. Pat. No. 5,891 ,078, discloses a sterile system for delivery of an adhesive strip or bandage using a single hand. The design comprises of a flexible strip, at least one pull tab, and an optional wound pad between a carrier member and a release backing, with an optional blocking member. The adhesive strip of the adhesive bandage is removed from the release backing and remains attached to the pull-tab and full-length carrier strip until actual application. One disadvantage of this system is that it is difficult to apply the bandage. A second disadvantage is that it may not be cost effective. Another disadvantage may be that the carrier member may confuse users during application as to which side is needed to be pulled first, and may be also possible that the user will inadvertently destroy the bandage before application. Further, the full carrier member is larger than the adhesive strip and therefore may complicate handling and positioning of the adhesive strip before applying. Furthermore, it may be difficult for the user to identify the proper sequence of pulling on the tabs without proper indicia. In addition, as an opaque full-length carrier sheet would conceal the bandage located on its underside, the carrier sheet should be made of transparent materials, which may be even less cost effective.
Therefore, there is a need for an adhesive bandage that could be cost effective, applied quickly without contact between the user and the adhesive bandage, allows precise positioning before application, could be applied to the skin with minimal exposure to the environment, and allows one hand application of the adhesive bandage.
Background - Prior Art - Transdermal Patch
A transdermal patch needs direct contact with the site of application in order to effectively deliver a drug, which is usually achieved and maintained by adhesive means on the face of the patch in addition to the medicated pad. To protect the adhesive layer prior to application, a releasable material is typically laminated to or applied over the adhesive which is then later removed and discarded before use. Removal of the release liner is often difficult and has numerous disadvantages. One of these disadvantages is that a typical transdermal patch is relatively expensive when compared to other adhesive dressings such as adhesive bandages, and therefore needs to be manipulated more carefully. A second disadvantage is that since the pad of the transdermal patch is medicated, any contact between the person applying the patch and the pad of the patch may result in contamination, transference of the medication onto the person applying the patch, and damage of the surface of the medicated patch resulting in improper delivery of the drug. Further, touching the adhesive part may result in loss of adherence before application of the patch which then results in the patch falling off before the drug is fully administered through the skin. A third disadvantage is that certain segments of the population, such as the elderly or those with arthritic conditions, may further find handling of smaller patches difficult. Also, certain segments of the population which have the need of a caregiver to administer the transdermal patches, such as children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, may make it more difficult to administer a medicated patch onto their skin if the procedure is complicated and frustrating for the caregiver.
Therefore, there is a need for an applicator for transdermal patches that could deliver a transdermal patch onto the patient's skin, with or without integral disinfection of the application area prior to application, in a quick and easy manner. Such application should have separation between the person applying the patch and the actual patch until it is secured onto the skin. There is a need to allow the pressing of the patch, if needed, onto the patient's skin without direct contact of the person applying the patch.
Background - Prior Art - Decorations Positioning
The application of decorations to a surface such as a wall, a vehicle or any other surface may be challenging and time-consuming. The task as traditionally performed needs at least two individuals one to hold the decoration against the supporting surface while the other individual identifies the most appealing location for the object and marks the location for the anchoring device on the supporting surface. The anchoring device is then secured to the supporting surface at the point that was marked. There are a few disadvantages for this approach. One disadvantage is that there is a need for two individuals, which means a single person cannot perform the task. A second disadvantage is that it is difficult not to position according to the opinion of another, but also to precisely level the decoration. Another disadvantage is that many decorations such as vehicle and wall decals, and posters are self adhesive which could pose another difficulty keeping the hands from sticking to the adhesive surface before application and from the adhesive surface from folding upon itself, which then makes separation almost impossible. Yet another disadvantage is the fact that once the adhesive side of the poster or decoration is applied to the surface, it is designed to stick for a long time which means that removing the decoration because of a positioning mistake, or because of a fold or wrinkle, is a difficult task which could eventually damage the decoration.
Therefore, there is a need for decoration applicator capable of positioning before actual application in order to choose place of application. There is also a need for decoration applicator to allow precise positioning once the place of application has been chosen. There is a need to allow this process of choosing the place of application, precise positioning and application to be done by a single person. There is a need to allow the application to be done without any risk of touching the adhesive side of the decoration. There is a need to allow larger decorations to be rolled and allowed to be positioned and partially applied onto a surface and after application, be further rolled until application is complete.
Background - Prior Art - Temporary Tattoo and Electronic Patch
Temporary tattoos are used for temporary skin decoration. Electronic patches are used for monitoring body activity. Both temporary tattoos and electronic patches are designed to be printed on very thin layers of material, usually transparent, which are then is placed on the skin, allowing the tattoo and patch to stretch and contour the skin both upon application and while on skin. Both temporary tattoos and electronic patches use a liquid, generally water, to be applied onto the desired area before application in order to activate a soluble layer of the tattoo or patch which then helps secure the article onto the skin.
Therefore, there is a need for an applicator that may either contain a liquid which could be applied onto the temporary tattoo or electronic patch before application without contact by the user, or a separate compartment on the package holding the temporary tattoo or electronic patch which would hold a gauze that would wet the desired area. There is a need for either the first or the second method of wetting the desired area, that there would be an applicator that would allow precise placement of the temporary tattoo or electronic patch without contact by user and without the risk of contamination, wrinkling of the article and contamination. There is a need for the whole operation of application, from wetting to application, be performed using one hand.

One embodiment of a package is illustrated in FIG. 1 A (isometric frontal view), FIG. 1 B (isometric back view), both figures shown with an optional horizontal tear-off strip; FIG. 1C (top plan view with cross-section markings), and FIG. ID (cross-section view a-a', as marked in FIG. 1 C).
The package is comprised of two basic components: a carrier member 20 and a release backing 70. Said carrier member 20 and said release backing 70 may be created from plastics coated papers, silicone release coated paper, or release coated films such as silicone coated polyethylene. Said carrier member 20 is attached to said release backing 70 by a surrounding adhesive frame 170, creating a chamber 160. Said surrounding adhesive frame 170 may be created from a pressure sensitive adhesive such as acrylate ester or vinyl ether, or a non- pressure sensitive adhesive. Said carrier member 20 has a carrier member adhesive strip 28 at its upper end made of pressure sensitive adhesive such as acrylate ester or vinyl ether. Said carrier member adhesive strip 28 is shown with an optional horizontal tear-off strip 280 attached to the adhesive strip, as illustrated in FIG. 1 A and IB. Said carrier member 20 has a carrier member adhesive coating 34 which extends to the inner borders of said surrounding adhesive frame 170. Said carrier member adhesive coating 34 may be of pressure sensitive adhesive. The bond between said carrier member adhesive coating 34 and the non-adhesive side of a transdermal patch 190 needs to be of lower overall strength compared with the bond between the adhesive side of the transdermal patch 190 arid the surface of the surface onto which it is attached. Said release backing 70 has a release backing release coating 78 which extends to the inner borders of said surrounding adhesive frame 170 which may be silicone- based. Said release backing 70 has a release backing separation cut 96 on three sides - lower side, right side and left side. Said release backing separation cut 96 creates four parts on four ends of said release backing 70. The four parts extend from the outer borders of said surrounding adhesive frame 170 to the end borders of said release backing 70. One part of the four parts is a release backing connecting flap 86 on the upper end of said release backing 70. A second part of the four parts is a release backing pull tab 90 on the lower end of said release backing 70. A third part of the four parts is a release backing pull tab arm 94 on the right end of said release backing 70, and a fourth part of the four parts is a release backing pull tab arm 94 on the left end of said release backing 70. Said release backing pull tab arm 94 on the right end and said release backing pull tab arm 94 on the left end, connect said release backing pull tab 90 to said release backing connecting flap 86. Note: A transdermal patch 190 is shown in the present embodiment for illustrative purposes and may be replaced with any article. Suitable materials for said carrier member 20 and/or release backing 70 may be of any material which is suitable for use with the technique used for application and are not limited to the materials mentioned above. These materials include polypropylene with a silicone coated release material, kraft paper with or without silicone coating, etc. Suitable adhesives for said carrier member adhesive strip 28, said carrier member adhesive coating 34 and said surrounding adhesive frame 170 may be pressure sensitive adhesive such as acrylics, butyl rubber, ethylene-vinyl acetate, natural rubber, nitriles, silicone rubbers, styrene block copolymers, vinyl ethers, etc., or non pressure sensitive adhesives, and are not limited to the materials mentioned above. Suitable coatings for release coatings may be silicone based, plastic based, etc.
Operation - Figs. I E to 1 H - first embodiment
The manner of using a package to apply an adhesive-sided article is by temporarily attaching the package to the surface onto which the adhesive-sided article is to be applied, applying the article and then removing the package from the surface, leaving the article attached to the surface. The article in this case is a transdermal patch 190. Said transdermal patch 190 has a non-adhesive side which is attached to a carrier member 20 by a carrier member adhesive coating 34. Said carrier member adhesive coating 34 is of lower strength compared to the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190.
A horizontal tear-off strip 280 is removed by tearing it off of a carrier member adhesive strip 28. Said carrier member adhesive strip 28 is then temporarily attached to the surface onto which the article is to be applied above the desired position of the article to be applied. At this stage, before application of the article, it is possible to re-position the package as needed by detaching and reattaching the package on the surface by said carrier member adhesive strip 28. The article inside the package will be applied in the same position in which the package is placed before application. After the attachment of said carrier member adhesive strip 28 onto the surface in a desired position, it is possible to attach the article onto the surface by two methods. A first method of attaching the article is by first completely exposing the adhesive side of the article, and then attaching the article onto the surface by pressing down on the carrier member with the user's hand, for example. In this first method, it is possible to use one hand for this operation. A second method of attaching the article is by pressing down the carrier member onto the surface while gradually exposing the adhesive side of the article. In this second method, it is possible to generally limit exposure of the adhesive side of the article to air. After the package is attached to the surface, a release backing pull tab 90 is pulled down. Said release backing pull tab 90 is attached to a release backing pull tab arm 94 on the left and a release backing pull tab arm 94 on the right, both of which are attached to a release backing connecting flap 86 on the top. Said release backing connecting flap 86 connects the pulling mechanism, which consists of said pull tab 90 and pull tab arms 94, to a release backing 70. Said release backing 70 has a release backing release coating 78 which is released from the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 once said release backing pull tab 90 has been pulled down. Said release backing 70 is also separated from said carrier member 20 by detaching from the top side, left side and right side of said surrounding adhesive frame 170, while still staying attached to said carrier member 20 by the bottom side of said surrounding adhesi ve frame 170. Once the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 has been completely exposed, said transdermal patch 190 is held in its position before actual attachment to the surface by being attached to said carrier member adhesive coating 34.
In order to attach the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 to the surface, the user presses said carrier member 20 against the surface. In addition to securing said transdermal patch 190 to the surface by pressing down on said carrier member 20, it may be needed to activate the medicated pad by pressing on the non-adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 for a period of time, generally less than a minute. This is true in the case of certain medicated patches which needed such actions to be performed. In order to activate the medicated patch, if needed, there may be two methods in which this activation could be performed. The first method may be performed in the same manner as for securing the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 to the surface, which is by pressing on said carrier member 20 without touching said transdermal patch 190 directly, for the needed period of time to activate the medicated pad on said transdermal patch 190. Then, after the securement of the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 to the surface and after the activation of the medicated pad of said transdermal patch 190, said release backing pull tab 90 may be pulled up and away from the surface, releasing the carrier member adhesive coating 34 from the non- adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190. At this moment, said transdermal patch 190 and the package are no longer attached to each other. In order to detach the package from the surface, said release backing pull tab 90 may be further pulled up and away from the surface, detaching said carrier member adhesive strip 28 from the surface. Said transdermal patch is then secured and activated on the surface.
The second method may be performed by first securing the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 to the surface by pressing on said carrier member 20 without touching said transdermal patch 190 directly. Then, said release backing pull tab 90 may be pulled up and away from the surface, releasing the carrier member adhesive coating 34 from the non- adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190. At this moment, said transdermal patch 190 and the package are no longer attached to each other. In order to detach the package from the surface, said release backing pull tab 90 may be further pulled up and away from the surface, detaching said carrier member adhesive strip 28 from the surface. After the package has been removed from the surface, the non-adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 may be pressed against the surface in order to activate the medicated pad of said transdermal patch 190 for the needed period of time.
It is also possible to release the carrier member adhesive coating 34 from the non- adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 and said carrier member adhesive strip 28 from the surface, by pulling up and away said release backing pull tab arm 94 on the left and/or said release backing pull tab arm 94 on the right.

Said release backing 70 has a release backing release coating 78 which extends to the inner borders of said surrounding adhesive frame #2 174.
Said release backing 70 has a release backing separation cut 96 on three sides - lower side, right side and left side. Said release backing separation cut 96 is wider on the lower end of said release backing 70. Said release backing separation cut 96 creates four parts on four ends of said release backing 70. The four parts extend from the outer borders of said surrounding adhesive frame #2 174 to the end borders of said release backing 70.
Said middle member 50 has a middle member separation cut 54 on three sides - lower side, right side and left side. Said middle member separation cut 54 creates four parts on four ends of said middle member 50. The four parts extend from the outer borders of said surrounding adhesive frame #1 172 to the end borders of said middle member 50. One part of the four parts is a middle member connecting flap 56 on the upper end of said middle member 50. A second part of the four parts is a middle member pull tab 58 on the lower end of said middle member 50. A third part of the four parts is a middle member pull tab arm 60 on the right end of said middle member 50, and a fourth part of the four parts is a middle member pull tab arm 60 on the left end of said middle member 50. Said middle member pull tab arm 60 on the right end and said middle member pull tab arm 60 on the left end, connect said middle member pull tab 58 to said middle member connecting flap 56. Note: A transdermal patch 190 and sterilization gauze 180 are shown in the present embodiment for illustrative purposes and may be replaced with any article. Materials are from the selections mentioned in the first embodiment. Operation - tenth embodiment
The manner of using a package to apply a sterilization gauze and an adhesive-sided article is by temporarily attaching the package to the surface onto which the adhesive-sided article is to be applied, applying the sterilization gauze first while it is still attached to the package, applying the article onto the same area which was sterilized by the sterilization gauze, and then removing the package from the surface, leaving the article attached to the surface.
The first part of the operation of a package in the tenth embodiment consists of applying gauze, which has no adhesion, to a surface onto which later on an adhesive sided article such as a transdermal patch would be applied. The first article in this case is a sterilization gauze 180. Said sterilization gauze 180 has two non-adhesive sides, one of which is attached to a middle member 50 by a middle member adhesive coating 52. The second side of said sterilization gauze 180 is to be applied on the surface for sterilization of a designated area of the surface. A horizontal tear-off strip 280 is removed by tearing it off of a carrier member adhesive strip 28. Said carrier member adhesive strip 28 is then temporarily attached on the surface which a desired area of the surface is to be sterilized and onto which the article is to be applied. At this stage, before sterilization of a desired area on the surface and before application of the article, it is possible to re-position the package as needed by detaching and reattaching the package on the surface by said carrier member adhesive strip 28. Said sterilization gauze 180 and said transdermal patch 190 inside the package will be applied in the same position in which the package is placed before application.
After the attachment of said carrier member adhesive strip 28 onto the surface in a desired position, it is possible to sterilize the surface by using one of two methods. A first method of sterilization is by first completely exposing the sterilizing side of said sterilization gauze 180, and then pressing down on the carrier member with the user's hand, for example. In this first method, it is possible to use one hand for this operation. A second method of sterilization is by pressing down the carrier member onto the surface while gradually exposing the sterilization side of said sterilization gauze 180. In this second method, it is possible to generally limit exposure of the sterilization side of said sterilization gauze 180 to air. Once a method is chosen, a release backing pull tab 90 is pulled down.
Said release backing 70 has a release backing release coating 78 which exposes the sterilization side of said sterilization gauze 180 once said release backing pull tab 90 has been pulled down. Said release backing 70 is also separated from said middle member 50 by detaching from the top side, left side and right side of a surrounding adhesive frame #2 174, while still staying attached to sard middle member 50 by the bottom side of said surrounding adhesive frame #2 174. Once the sterilization side of said sterilization gauze 180 has been completely exposed, said sterilization gauze 180 is held in its position before actual sterilization of an area on the surface by being attached to said middle member adhesive coating 52.
In order to sterilize an area on the surface, the user presses said carrier member 20 against the surface. Note: this method of sterilization of an area and then application of an adhesive sided article such as a transdermal patch 190 is applicable if the medicated pad of said transdermal patch 190 is activated without applying pressure to said transdermal patch 190 against the surface onto which it is applied, or if the medicated pad of said transdermal patch 190 is activated when present on the surface onto which it is to be applied. Once the sterilization part of the operation has been accomplished, it is possible to detach said release backing 70 part from said middle member 50 by further pulling down said release backing pull tab 90, and detaching the bottom part of said surrounding adhesive frame #2 174. Note: it is not needed to perform such detachment. It is also possible to skip this step and leave said release backing 70 on the package and continue with the next step.
The second part of the operation of a package in the tenth embodiment consists of applying said transdermal patch 190 onto the sterilized area on the surface which was previously sterilized by said sterilization gauze 180. The second article in the package is said transdermal patch 190. Said transdermal patch 190 has a non-adhesive side which is attached to a carrier member 20 by a carrier member adhesive coating 34. Said carrier member adhesive coating 34 is of lower strength compared to the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190. Said middle, member 50 has a middle member release coating 62 which exposes the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 once a middle member pull tab 58 has been pulled down. Said middle member 50 is also separated from said carrier member 20 by detaching from the top side, left side and right side of a surrounding adhesive frame # 1 172, while still staying attached to said carrier member 20 by the bottom side of said surrounding adhesive frame #1 172. At this point, said transdermal patch 190 has one adhesive side exposed and one non- adhesive side attached to said carrier member adhesive coating 34. In order to attach said transdermal patch 190 to the area on the surface which has previously been sterilized, the user may press said carrier member 20 against the surface. In addition to securing said transdermal patch 190 to the surface by pressing down on said carrier member 20, it may be needed to activate the medicated pad by pressing on the non- adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 for a period of time, generally less than a minute. Then, after the securement of the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 to the surface and after the activation of the medicated pad of said transdermal patch 190, a middle member pull tab 58 may be pulled up and away from the surface, releasing the carrier member adhesive coating 34 from the non-adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190. At this moment, said transdermal patch 190 and the package are no longer attached to each other. In order to detach the package from the surface, said middle member pull tab 58 may be further pulled up and away from the surface, detaching said carrier member adhesive strip 28 from the surface. Said transdermal patch is then secured and activated on the surface.
The second method may be performed by first securing the adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 to the surface by pressing on said carrier member 20 without touching said transdermal patch 190 directly. Then, said middle member pull tab 58 may be pulled up and away from the surface, releasing the carrier member adhesive coating 34 from the non- adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190. At this moment, said transdermal patch 190 and the package are no longer attached to each other. In order to detach the package from the surface, said middle member pull tab 58 may be further pulled up and away from the surface, detaching said carrier member adhesive strip 28 from the surface. After the package has been removed from the surface, the non-adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 may be pressed against the surface in order to activate the medicated pad of said transdermal patch 190 for the needed period of time.
It is also possible to release the carrier member adhesive coating 34 from the non- adhesive side of said transdermal patch 190 and said carrier member adhesive strip 28 from the surface, by pulling up and away said middle member pull tab arm 60 on the left and/or said middle member pull tab arm 60 on the right. Note: A transdermal patch 190 and a sterilization gauze 180 are shown in the present embodiment for illustrative purposes and may be replaced with any article. Materials are from the selections mentioned in the first embodiment. Operation - eleventh embodiment
The operation of a package in the eleventh embodiment consists of application of an adhesive sided article onto a surface similar to the first embodiment, but after a preliminary manual sterilization or wetting stage. The manner of using a package to apply a sterilization gauze and an adhesive-sided article is by first manually sterilizing a chosen area with a sterilization gauze, with or without gloves, then temporarily attaching the package to the surface onto which the adhesive-sided article is to be applied, applying the article onto the same area which was previously sterilized by the sterilization gauze, and then removing the package from the surface, leaving the article attached to the surface. The first part of the operation of a package in the eleventh embodiment consists of sterilizing a chosen area of a surface onto which later on an adhesive sided article such as a transdermal patch would be applied.
The first article to be applied is a sterilization gauze 180. Said sterilization gauze 180 has two non-adhesive sides. An optional horizontal tear-off strip 280 is illustrated in Fig. 1 1 A. A peel-off member pull flap 116 on the end of a peel-off member 110 is pulled away from the package, removing a peel-off member release coating #1 112 from said sterilization gauze 180, as illustrated in Figs. 1 1 A. Said peel-off member 110 is also separated from said carrier member 20 by detaching from the top side, left side and right side of a surrounding adhesive frame #1 172, while still staying attached to said carrier member by the bottom side of said surrounding adhesive frame # 1 172. It is possible to completely separate said peel off member 110 from the package or keep said peel-off member 110 attached to said carrier member 20 by the bottom side of said surrounding adhesive frame # 1 172. Said sterilization gauze 180 is then pulled up manually away from a peel-off member release coating #2 114, and applied manually to a designated area on the surface onto which said transdermal patch 190 is to be applied.
Once the designated area is sterilized, said horizontal tear-off strip 280 is removed by tearing it off of a carrier member adhesive strip 28. Said carrier member adhesive strip 28 is then temporarily attached on the surface onto which the article is to be applied, usually above the designated area which was previously sterilized using said sterilization gauze 180. At this stage, before application of the article, it is possible to re-position the package as needed by detaching and reattaching the package on the surface by said carrier member adhesive strip 28. The article inside the package will be applied in the same position in which the package is placed before application. It is needed not to touch the sterilized area or attach said carrier member adhesive strip 28 on the sterilized area but above the sterilized area, in order to avoid possible contamination of the sterilized area. The rest of the operation and application of said a transdermal patch 190 is similar to the application of the first embodiment.

Note: A sticker 220 is shown in the present embodiment for illustrative purposes and may be replaced with any article. Materials are from the selections mentioned in the first embodiment.
Operation - twelfth embodiment
The operation of a package in the twelfth embodiment is similar to the operation of a package in the first embodiment, with two exceptions. The first exception is that the article to be applied is a sticker 220 which is rolled upon itself and not a transdermal patch 190. Therefore, activation stage of the medicated pad of said transdermal patch, as indicated in the first embodiment, is not needed. The second exception is that after application of said sticker 220 onto the surface, it is needed to further unroll said sticker 220 in order to complete the application. It is possible for said sticker 220 inside the package to be rolled either clockwise or counter-clockwise.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION - FIG. 13 - THIRTEENTH EMBODIMENT
Another embodiment of a package is illustrated in FIG. 13 (cross-section view). The package is comprised of three basic components: a liquid-holding pouch 42, a partially- perforated middle member 66, and a release backing 70. Said liquid-holding pouch 42 is attached to said partially-perforated middle member 66 by surrounding adhesive frame #1 172, creating a liquid chamber 256. Said partially-perforated middle member 66 is attached to said release backing 70 by surrounding adhesive frame #2 174, creating chamber #2 164. Said liquid-holding pouch 42 has a carrier member adhesive strip 28 at its upper end. Said release backing 70 has a release backing release coating 78 which extends to the inner borders of said surrounding adhesive frame #2 174. Said release backing 70 has a release backing separation cut 96 on three sides - lower side, right side and left side. Said release backing separation cut 96 creates four parts on four ends of said release backing 70. The four parts extend from the outer borders of said surrounding adhesive frame #2 174 to the end borders of said release backing 70.
Said partially-perforated middle member 66 has a perforation strip 68 in four connected areas, forming a frame around the inner borders of said surrounding adhesive frame #1 172. Said partially perforated middle member 66 has a partially perforated middle member adhesive coating 64 which is attached to an electronic patch 210. Said partially-perforated middle member 66 prevents a liquid 252 contained in said liquid chamber 256 from transferring into chamber #2 164 until said liquid-holding pouch 42 is squeezed and therefore pressure is applied on said liquid chamber 256. Note: An electronic patch 210 is shown in the present embodiment for illustrative purposes and may be replaced with any article. Materials are from the selections mentioned in the first embodiment.
Operation - thirteenth embodiment
The manner of using a package to apply an adhesive-sided article is by temporarily attaching the package to the surface onto which the adhesive-sided article is to be applied, applying the article and then removing the package from the surface, leaving the article attached to the surface.
The article in this case is an electronic patch 210. An electronic patch needs a preliminary stage of wetting before application in order to be attached to a surface. Before mixing a wetting agent with said electronic patch 210, said electronic patch 210 has no ability to be attached to a surface without first being wetted. Said carrier member adhesive strip 28 is temporarily attached to the surface onto which the article is to be applied above the desired position of the article to be applied. At this stage, before application of the article, it is possible to re-position the package as needed by detaching and reattaching the package on the surface by said carrier member adhesive strip 28. The article inside the package will be applied in the same position in which the package is placed before application.
After the attachment of said carrier member adhesive strip 28 onto the surface in a desired position, a liquid-holding pouch is manually squeezed towards the surface, releasing a liquid 252 found in a liquid chamber 256 into chamber #2 164 through a perforated strip 68 which is a part of a partially-perforated middle member 66. The liquid 252 from said liquid chamber 256 wets said electronic patch 210 and activates an adhesive which will assist in attaching said electronic patch 210 onto a surface. After the wetting of said electronic patch 210, a release backing pull tab 90 is pulled down. Said release backing 70 has a release backing release coating 78 which is released from the previously activated adhesive side of electronic patch 210 once said release backing pull tab 90 has been pulled down. Said release backing 70 is also separated from said partially- perforated middle member 66 by detaching from the top side, left side and right side of a surrounding adhesive frame #2 174, while still staying attached to said partially-perforated middle member 66 by the bottom side of said surrounding adhesive frame #2 174.
Once the adhesive side of said electronic patch 210 has been completely exposed, said electronic patch 210 is held in its position before actual attachment to the surface by being attached to a partially perforated middle member adhesive coating 64. In order to attach the adhesive side of said electronic patch 210 to the surface, the user lightly presses said liquid- holding pouch 42 against the surface. It may be needed to hold said electronic patch 210 lightly pressed until it is securely attached to the surface. After said electronic patch 210 is securely attached to the surface, said release backing pull tab 90 may be pulled up and away from the surface, releasing said partially-perforated middle member adhesive coating 64 from the non- adhesive side of said electronic patch 210. At this moment, said electronic patch 210 and the package are no longer attached to each other. In order to detach the package from the surface, said release backing pull tab 90 may be further pulled up and away from the surface, detaching said carrier member adhesive strip 28 from the surface. Said electronic patch 210 is then secured on the surface.
It is also possible to release the carrier member adhesive coating 34 from the non- adhesive side of said electronic patch 210 and said carrier member adhesive strip 28 from the surface, by pulling up and away said release backing pull tab arm 94 on the left and/or said release backing pull tab arm 94 on the right.
