Description

DESCRIPTION
DEVICE FOR RECORDING OPERATING CONDITIONS OF BRAKE LININGS The Related Art
The present invention relates to a system for enabling recording of the temperature and the operating time of the brake linings that are part of the brake systems used for decelerating and/or stopping moving vehicles.
The Prior Art
The present invention relates to a system for enabling production of more durable and safer brake linings by means of recording the level of temperature that the brake linings used in vehicle brake systems are exposed to and their operating times. Brake linings are metal pieces that are curved in the form of semicircle. They generate the impact of decelerating and stopping by means of rubbing against the brake drum when the brake pedal is pressed on.- Brake linings are among the essential materials in brake systems required for decelerating and/or stopping vehicles. These linings are worn with use. Wearing of the brake linings substantially depend on the operating conditions and the way of driving. It is observed that brake linings are worn quicker in vehicles that are frequently used in local traffic and short distances or for sportive purposes. Stopping capability of worn linings is found to be lower. This may cause traffic accidents. In order to avoid traffic accidents, a system for determining the expected life of brake linings is required. In the prior art, patent application no TR 2009/04298 and title: "Wear detector for brake shoe or lining preferably for railway vehicle brakes" can be given as an example. In this invention, a wear detector preferably developed for the brake shoes or linings of railway vehicles. This detector is mounted onto the brake linings and the driver is informed when the brake linings narrow down. The invention that is given as an example, is related to railway vehicles and it becomes prominent with the capability of being mounted on the lining. However, it does not provide any development about the measurement of the factors that cause deformation of brake linings. Therefore, it is an invention intended for informing the user about the problem that occurred, instead of monitoring the process of occurrence of that problem. However, in the present invention that is subject to the application, the system to be developed can be mounted on the vehicles and can measure the level of temperature that the brake linings are subjected to. It gives accurate data to the manufacturers about the friction, braking distance, and operating time of the brake linings and thus enables making required research and development studies in the light of these data. As a result of these studies, safer and smart brake linings suitable for conditions of use can be produced. As an example to the known status of the invention, patent application no TR 97/01572 and title: A device showing the wear of brake lining" can be given. In this invention, the thickness of the brake lining can be measured by means of a coded disc placed on the cam shaft. Therefore, as in the above given example, this device is also developed merely for measuring brake linings and provides information to the user about the situation. In the present invention, different from the example patent, the level of temperature that the brake linings are subjected to be determined and contribution is made to production of smart linings that do not reduce the expected life.
In order to eliminate the prior art problems and meet the needs, the invention with the below given details is developed.
Detailed Description of the Invention The present invention relates to a system for enabling recording of the temperature and the operating time of the brake linings that are part of the brake systems used for decelerating and/or stopping moving vehicles. Nowadays, performance of brake linings can be determined by two methods. In the first one of these methods, sample linings are mounted on the vehicle, the braking distance is measured and compared with the original lining. If the lining performance is within +/- 15%, it is considered as equivalent product. In the second method, dynamometer for measuring the output force of a rotating machine is used. Sample linings are mounted on the dynamometer. The conditions of the vehicle are assumed to be present on this device and the friction coefficient, braking distance etc. data are compared with the original lining. If the lining performance is within +/- 15%, it is considered as equivalent product. Both of these two methods are difficult to apply and costly, since original lining and dynamometer are required for application. Moreover, measurement of the temperature of brake linings in operating conditions can not be made with these methods. The suitability with the friction coefficient and standards can not be tested physically. However, the most important point is to determine the level of temperature that the brake linings are subjected to during operation. Standards are determined as 350 °C and test devices are set to this value. These test devices do not show the level of temperature being subjected to, and can perform test according to the default and programmed temperature. In this case, the desired value of temperature is determined by trial and error method and therefore the research and development studies can only continue with estimations. Sometimes these studies take years or even not made at all.
The invention is based on the use of chips durable against high temperature for measuring the level of temperature that the brake linings are subjected to and their expected life. Manufacturers can have accurate data about the friction, braking distance, and expected life thanks to these chips. Research and development studies can be made in the light of recorded precise data. Smart brake linings that are safer and suitable for required conditions can be produced as a result of the research and development studies. The invention is a test device, durable against high friction and developed for higher temperatures than the standard 350 °C test device temperature, for instance 500 °C. Chips durable against high temperature can be used in various industrial fields and also provide additional benefits.
As a result, the invention is a device for testing the brake linings used in vehicle brake systems, and it comprises chip that measures and records the temperature that the brake linings are exposed to according to operating conditions. The device can optionally be adapted to brake linings.
Moreover, the device of the invention comprises module for measuring and recording the temperature level that the brake linings are exposed to and the ratio of wear based on this temperature or the expected life. In addition to these, the module found in the device also measures and records the amount of friction, distance of braking, or operating time of the brake linings.
The device comprises chip that is durable against temperature of 350 °C and above for measuring and recording the level of temperature that the brake linings are exposed to. Preferred embodiments comprise chip durable against- the temperature of 500 °C and above.
Moreover, the invention is the method for testing the brake linings used in the brake systems of vehicles, and it is based on measurement of the level of temperature that the brake linings are exposed to according to operating conditions by means of chips resistant to high temperature and adaptable onto brake linings. Measurement and recording of the level of temperature that the brake linings are exposed to and the ratio of wear, level of friction, braking distance, or operating distance by means of chips resistant to high temperature and adaptable onto brake linings is also within the scope of the invention. Said chips can be adapted onto brake linings by means of module. As a result, with the present invention, it will be possible to measure and record the level of temperature that the brake linings are exposed to and the amount of operating time even at high temperatures.
