Definitions

  • This invention relates to a menstrual cup used by women during menstruation, more specifically to a device that must be placed inside the vagina for the purpose of collecting the menstrual flow (menstrual blood) and giving a physical freedom to its users.
  • Menstrual tampons considered as modern conveniences, are menstrual hygiene products that make menstruation period no different than any other day. These products work on the principle of collecting the menstrual flow by absorbing it and this way preventing any risk of leakage outside the vagina.
  • the most common material used for absorbency is cotton.
  • Menstrual tampons unlike menstrual pads, absorb the menstrual flow before it quits the vagina. That is how it solves some social and hygienic problems that women usually encounter when using pads.
  • Tampons compared to pads, appear to be very convenient but when used unconsciously or during extended period of times they can provoke a deadly disease called Toxic Shock Syndrome. If tampons are used consciously and changed every 4 to 6 hours, the risk will seriously decrease but this will cause a difficulty in usage. Additionally tampons apart from absorbing the menstrual flow (menstrual blood) also absorb the natural fluids inside the vagina, which causes a dryness that alternates the pH-balance of the vagina.
  • Menstrual cups which have been developed after tampons are hard to use and time taking. Like tampons menstrual cups collect the menstrual flow before it quits the vagina. But, differently from tampons, menstrual cups work on the principle of collecting the flow not absorbing it. That's why it is not necessary to use absorbent materials in cups.
  • the tampon disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 4486191; is equipped of a string used to close and remove the device. The exterior part of the device is non-absorbent while the interior part is made of an absorbent material. The flaring of the end is achieved by driving a force to the plunger.
  • the insertion tools which are the plunger and the insertion cylinder, are removed.
  • the device that stays inside the vagina looks similar to a tampon but has a non-absorbent exterior part and an absorbent interior part. When a driving force is applied to the plunger the device will not flare because it will slide into the vagina. If a force is applied to the plunger and at the same time the string pulled down the device won't open because the mechanism will be blocked. Additionally an absorbent material is used on the top interior part of the device. When this part will get in contact with the menstrual flow there will be an enlargement and this will narrow the entry.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 20880077097 is a menstrual cup made of an elastic material. But this menstrual cup is conic and the opening has a large diameter. That's why during insertion into the vagina the user will have to fold it and insert it this way. Because of that the invention is not hygienic, hard to use (to insert and remove) and requires the user to have some experience.
  • An object of this present invention is to develop a menstrual cup that once placed inside the vagina, will open up, by pushing up the propulsive stick, and turn into a funnel shaped device that will collect the menstrual flow.
  • Another object is to develop an elastic funnel shaped menstrual cup that will prevent leakage by grabbing the vagina wall after it has opened up.
