Definitions
- This invention relates to a menstrual cup used by women during menstruation, more specifically to a device that must be placed inside the vagina for the purpose of collecting the menstrual flow (menstrual blood) and giving a physical freedom to its users.
- Menstrual tampons considered as modern conveniences, are menstrual hygiene products that make menstruation period no different than any other day. These products work on the principle of collecting the menstrual flow by absorbing it and this way preventing any risk of leakage outside the vagina.
- the most common material used for absorbency is cotton.
- Menstrual tampons unlike menstrual pads, absorb the menstrual flow before it quits the vagina. That is how it solves some social and hygienic problems that women usually encounter when using pads.
- Tampons compared to pads, appear to be very convenient but when used unconsciously or during extended period of times they can provoke a deadly disease called Toxic Shock Syndrome. If tampons are used consciously and changed every 4 to 6 hours, the risk will seriously decrease but this will cause a difficulty in usage. Additionally tampons apart from absorbing the menstrual flow (menstrual blood) also absorb the natural fluids inside the vagina, which causes a dryness that alternates the pH-balance of the vagina.
- Menstrual cups which have been developed after tampons are hard to use and time taking. Like tampons menstrual cups collect the menstrual flow before it quits the vagina. But, differently from tampons, menstrual cups work on the principle of collecting the flow not absorbing it. That's why it is not necessary to use absorbent materials in cups.
- the tampon disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 4486191; is equipped of a string used to close and remove the device. The exterior part of the device is non-absorbent while the interior part is made of an absorbent material. The flaring of the end is achieved by driving a force to the plunger.
- the insertion tools which are the plunger and the insertion cylinder, are removed.
- the device that stays inside the vagina looks similar to a tampon but has a non-absorbent exterior part and an absorbent interior part. When a driving force is applied to the plunger the device will not flare because it will slide into the vagina. If a force is applied to the plunger and at the same time the string pulled down the device won't open because the mechanism will be blocked. Additionally an absorbent material is used on the top interior part of the device. When this part will get in contact with the menstrual flow there will be an enlargement and this will narrow the entry.
- U.S. Pat. No. 20880077097 is a menstrual cup made of an elastic material. But this menstrual cup is conic and the opening has a large diameter. That's why during insertion into the vagina the user will have to fold it and insert it this way. Because of that the invention is not hygienic, hard to use (to insert and remove) and requires the user to have some experience.
- An object of this present invention is to develop a menstrual cup that once placed inside the vagina, will open up, by pushing up the propulsive stick, and turn into a funnel shaped device that will collect the menstrual flow.
- Another object is to develop an elastic funnel shaped menstrual cup that will prevent leakage by grabbing the vagina wall after it has opened up.
- Fig.3 Vertical section of the body of the said menstrual cup in a closed position.
- Fig.4 Vertical section of the said menstrual cup in a closed position.
- Each figure has been numbered and each part has been referenced. The details are given below.
- the said menstrual cup (1) is composed of;
- At least one propulsive stick (3) situated inside the body (2) and moving in the vertical axis.
- At least one hole (4) situated at the bottom end of the body (2), allowing the entry of the propulsive stick (3) inside the body (2).
- At least one funnel shaped component (5) attached to the body (2), stored folded inside the body (2) when the device is in a closed position, and opening up, with the upper movement of the propulsive stick (3), to the cervix (entrance of the uterus) inside the vagina.
- the propulsive stick (3) is composed of;
- At least one bottom end bulge (31) having a larger diameter than the propulsive stick (3) and allowing the hole (4) to be completely filled when the menstrual cup (1) is in an opened position
- At least one upper end structure (33) to push and open up the funnel shaped component (5) stored folded inside the body (2) when the menstrual cup (1) is in a closed position
- At least one support (35) to increase the solidity of the upper end structure (33) and prevent any breaking or flexion.
- the upper end structure (33) has a rounded shape and possesses four upper end holes (34).
- the upper end structure (33) is strengthened with supports (35) made of the same material. Thereby the resistance of the upper end structure (33) is increased and breaking is prevented.
- the funnel shaped component (5) is composed of;
- At least one soft thin elastic structure (51) having the shape of a funnel and stored folded inside the body (2) when the menstrual cup (1) is in a closed position.
- At least one soft thick elastic structure (52) constituting the upper circular part of the thin elastic structure (51) stored folded inside the body (2) when the menstrual cup (1) is in a closed position and when opening up making the thin elastic structure (51) look like a funnel.
- the funnel shaped component (5) will be used as a reservoir as well.
- Vacuum holes (53) facilitate the removal of the menstrual cup (1).
- the air inside the funnel shaped component (5) is ejected through the vacuum holes (53).
- the vacuum holes (53) on the funnel shaped component (5) are on the desired.location and .of the desired number..
- the body (2) when the menstrual cup (1) is in a closed position the funnel shaped component (5) is stored folded inside it, after the menstrual cup (1) has been inserted inside the vagina the funnel shaped component (5) opens up and the menstrual flow passes through the funnel shaped component (5) to a tubular reservoir, constituting the body (2), where some part of the flow is stored.
- the wall thickness of the body (2) is more important at the base. This feature allows the bottom end bulge (31) and the bottom end cover (32) to fill the hole (4) more efficiently and prevents leakage.
- the body (2) is made of a polymeric material.
- the propulsive stick (3) is a moving stick, when pushed up opens up the funnel shaped component (5) stored folded inside the body (2), fills completely the hole (4) situated on the body (2) and prevents leakage.
- the propulsive stick (3) is made of a polymeric material and is hard enough to fulfill its task of pushing.
- the funnel shaped component (5) thanks to its soft and elastic structure, is stored folded inside the body (2), after the menstrual cup (1) is inserted into the vagina the propulsive stick (3) is pushed up to the funnel shaped component (5) and the folded structure opens up and takes the shape of a funnel.
- the funnel shaped component (5) is made of a polymeric material and preferably the same material as the body (2) is made of.
- the gap (6) An opening between the funnel shaped component (5) and the body (2) is left to facilitate the entry and the exit of the funnel shaped component (5) from the body (2).
- the gap (6) is between the exterior surface of the funnel shaped component (5) and the interior surface of the body (2).
- the string (7); attached to the body (2) from at least two different locations allows to remove the menstrual cup (1) by pulling it. Additionally when the menstrual cup (1) is placed inside the vagina the propulsive stick (3) is pushed up and at the same time the string (7) is pulled down, this opposite force applied to the string (7) stops the body (2) from sliding into the vagina.
- the string (7) is a whole with body (2) and made of the same material.
- the string (7) is attached to the body
- the invention relates to a menstrual cup (1); that is first placed into the vagina in a closed position then opens up by pushing the propulsive stick
- the funnel shaped component (5) which was stored folded inside the body (2), opens up to the cervix in a funnel shaped structure thanks to its elasticity.
- the body (2) is stabilized with the string (7).
- the upper end holes (34) situated on the upper end structure (33) of the propulsive stick (3) the menstrual flow passes through the funnel shaped component (5) to the body (2).
- the bottom end bulge (31) situated on the propulsive stick (3) is all the way on the propulsive stick
- the bottom end bulge (31) begins from the bottom part of the propulsive stick (3) and continues to the upper end. This way the resistance of the propulsive stick (3) will be increased.
- the menstrual cup (1) is made of a soft material and does not contain any sharp edges, so it will not hurt the user.
- the body's (2) length changes between 1 to 12 centimeters and its diameter changes between 1 to 5 centimeters.
- the absorbent material has no contact with the skin so there is no risk of irritation, smell or leakage and no risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome neither.
