Description

DESCRIPTION
PACKET FOR SMOKERS' ARTICLES
Technical field
This invention relates to a packet for smokers' articles.
More specifically, this invention can be advantageously applied to a rigid packet for cigarettes, in particular a hinged-lid packet, to which this specification will hereinafter refer but without thereby limiting the scope of the invention.
Background art
Rigid, hinged-lid packets for cigarettes are currently the cigarette packets of the most widespread type on the market because they are simple to make, easy and practical to use and provide good mechanical protection for the cigarettes they contain.
Normally, a rigid, hinged-lid packet for cigarettes comprises a hollow container having an extraction opening at the top of it for taking out the cigarettes and a lid which has a downward facing concavity and which is joined to the container along a hinge allowing it to rotate relative to the container itself between a position where the opening is open and a position where it is closed.
The container houses an inner wrapper, usually made of metallized paper and wrapped around a group of cigarettes.
Typically, the outside surface of a packet is printed to show the cigarette brand name, cigarette description, compulsory health warnings and other consumer related information and advertising addressing smokers. In some cases, cigarette packet manufacturers are required to provide their customers with so much information that it is difficult to print it all legibly on the outside surface of a packet, since the outside of the packet is relatively limited in size and largely occupied by the legally compulsory health warnings.
For this reason, it is common practice to accompany a cigarette packet with a coupon which is usually inserted into the packet between the container and a front wall of the inner wrapper housed therein.
To better protect the tobacco in the cigarettes, it is frequent to make cigarette packets, commonly known as "sealed packets", where the inner wrapping sheet has an opening for extracting the cigarettes and is provided with a re-positionable label with a tab which can be held between two fingers and pulled in order to move part of the label away from the inner wrapper. The label usually covers a large part of the top of the packet and an upper portion of the front wall of the inner wrapper and is provided with spots of adhesive material which allow it to be placed in a closed position several times after the cigarettes have been taken out of the inner wrapper.
In such packets, it is problematic and not advisable to place a coupon between the outer container and a front wall of the inner wrapper because the coupon would prevent or make difficult the access to the label grip tab and, unless removed, would make it impossible to pull the label in order to open the inner wrapper.
Disclosure of the invention
This invention has for an aim to provide a packet for smokers' articles comprising an inner wrapper with an opening through which the cigarettes can be extracted and equipped with a re-positionable opening and closing label placed against the opening, wherein a coupon can be interposed between a front wall of the inner wrapper and an adjacent wall of an outer container without causing the problems described above.
According to the invention there is provided a packet for smokers' articles as set out in the appended claims. Brief description of the drawings
The invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a non-limiting embodiment of it, and in which:
- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a cigarette packet according to the invention in a closed condition;
- Figures 2 and 3 are perspective views showing the cigarette packet of Figure 1 in a partly open and a fully open position, respectively;
- Figure 4 is a partial perspective view of a variant embodiment of the cigarette packet of Figures 1 -3;
- Figure 5 is a partial cross-sectional view of a further variant embodiment of the cigarette packets of Figures 1 -4; and
- Figure 6 is a partial perspective view of the cigarette packet of Figure 5.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments of the invention
With reference in particular to Figures 1 to 3, the numeral 1 denotes in its entirety a rigid cigarette packet comprising an outer container 2 and an inner wrapper 3 housed inside the container 2. The packet 1 is, preferably, a hinged lid packet.
Preferably, the outer container 2 is made of stiff card or paperboard.
The outer container 2 has a lid 4 which is joined to the container 2 along a hinge 5 allowing it to rotate relative to the container 2 itself between an open condition and a closed condition and vice versa.
In variant embodiments of the invention not illustrated, the packet 1 might not be of the hinged lid type or the container 2 might house more than one inner wrapper 3, as described for example in patent application
WO200230790A2.
When the packet 1 is in the closed condition, the lid 4 gives the outer container 2 the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped having a top wall 6 and a bottom wall 7 which are parallel and opposite to each other, two large side walls 8 and 9 which are parallel and opposite to each other, defining the front and rear walls of the packet 1 , respectively, and two small side walls 10 which are parallel and opposite to each other, defining the respective flanks of the packet 1 .
The lid 4 comprises a front wall 1 1 which, in the closed condition of the packet 1 , forms part of the front wall 8 of the packet 1 .
The front wall 1 1 of the lid 4 has an inside face 12, directed towards the inner wrapper 3 and in contact therewith when the packet 1 is in the closed condition. The front wall 1 1 has a lower edge 13, constituting a free end of the lid 4.
The lid 4 comprises two side walls 14 which, in the closed condition of the packet 1 , combine to form the respective flanks 10 of the packet 1.
In the embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described below, the cigarette packet 1 does not have what is known as the inner frame, but without thereby excluding alternative embodiments, not illustrated, where the packet 1 does have an inner frame.
The packet 1 comprises a group 15 of cigarettes 16 wrapped in the inner wrapper 3.
At the top and front of it, the inner wrapper 3 has an opening 17 for taking out the cigarettes 16 and is substantially sealed from the outside of the opening 17 so as to maintain the aroma and/or the humidity of the cigarettes 16.
A label 18 (at least one) allows opening and closing the inner wrapper 3, making it possible to take out the cigarettes 16 through the extraction opening 17.
The label 18 is fixed to the inner wrapper 3 by at least one film of re- positionable adhesive 19.
More specifically, the label 18 comprises an inside face 20, directed towards the group 15 of cigarettes 16, and an outside face 21 , directed towards the lid 4, opposite to the inside face 20.
The inside face 20 of the label 18 has the film of re-positionable adhesive 19 on it.
When the packet 1 is in the closed condition, the film of adhesive 19 is located around the upper edges and the front edge of the extraction opening 17.
It should be noted that a portion 22 of the precut inner wrapper 3 is (preferably) glued to the inside face 20 of the label 18, thus sealing in the cigarettes 16. When the packet 1 is opened for the first time, the portion 22 of the wrapper 3 is removed by means of the label 18, thus defining the opening 17 of the inner wrapper 3, as illustrated in particular in Figure 3. When the packet 1 is in the closed condition, a front edge of the label 18 is associated with a tongue 23 which is located at least partly under the front wall 1 1 of the lid 4.
The tongue 23 defines a grip tab which facilitates lifting the label 18 from the wrapper 3 to access the cigarettes 16 inside the wrapper 3 and re- positioning the label 18 in contact with the wrapper 3 after taking out a cigarette 16 .
As illustrated, in particular in Figure 2, housed inside the packet 1 , between the front wall 8 of the container 2 and a front wall 24 of the inner wrapper 3, there is a sheet or coupon 25 having an upper portion 26 that extends upwards relative to an upper edge 27 of the front wall 8 of the selfsame container 2. The portion 26 of the coupon 25 forms a projection which may be gripped by hand to remove the coupon 25 itself from the packet 1 .
When the opening 17 for extracting the cigarettes 16 is in the closed condition, a portion 28 of the label (18) running alongside the front wall 24 of the inner wrapper 3 is smaller in width than the front wall 24 of the inner wrapper 3 and the upper portion 26 of the coupon 25 is also smaller in width than the front wall 24 of the inner wrapper 3. The tongue 23 is smaller than or equal in width to the portion 28 of the label 18.
The positions, shapes and dimensions of the portion 28 of the label 18 and of the upper portion 26 of the coupon 25 are such that the portions 26 and 28 themselves adhere to respective zones of the front wall 24 of the inner wrapper 3 without being mutually superposed, cover substantially and are shaped to match a front and substantially rectangular region of the inner wrapper 3, and, when the opening 17 for extracting the cigarettes 16 is closed, lie side by side in the same plane, in particular transversely to a direction perpendicular to the plane they both lie in.
The portion 26 of the coupon 25 and the portion of the closable label 18 are positioned side by side transversely across respective edges which are substantially parallel to each other. These edges form an angle other than zero relative to a plane lying parallel to the bottom wall 7 of the packet. In other embodiments, this angle varies along the longitudinal extension of the aforesaid edges or is constant along the longitudinal extension of the aforesaid edges. More specifically, the portion 26 of the coupon 25 and the portion of the closable label 18 positioned side by side are delimited, in the area of mutual positioning side by side, by respective edges substantially equal to each other.
As shown in particular in Figures 2 and 3, the tongue 23 can be gripped in order to lift the label 18 partly off the inner wrapper 3 without interfering with the upper portion 26 of the coupon 25, and thus forms a portion for manually gripping the label 18 for lifting or repositioning it. The coupon 25 can be left in its original position as long as desired, so that its contents can be read at any later stage, without its presence negatively affecting the handiness of the packet 1 and the manageability of the label 18.
The packet V of Figure 4 differs from that of Figures 1 -3 only in that the tongue 23 is relatively longer and such that it protrudes from the packet 1 through a passage which separates the lid 4 from the container 2 when the lid 4 is closed. That means a user can open the lid 4 by gripping the tongue 23 between two fingers, thereby lifting the lid 4 open automatically. The packet 1 " of Figures 5 and 6 has a coupon 25 and a label 18 similar to those of the packet 1 of Figures 1 -3, but the front edge of the label 18 (or the tongue 23 thereof) is joined by connecting means, consisting for example of adhesive material, to the inside face 12 of the front wall 1 1 of the lid 4 in the proximity of the lower edge 13 of the selfsame front wall 1 1 . Thanks to this connection, every time the lid 4 is opened, the label 18 is detached automatically from the inner wrapper 3, thereby exposing the opening 17 for extracting the cigarettes 16. It should be noted that in this embodiment, the distinctive feature of being able to bring the label 18 to the open and/or closed position (automatically by means of the lid 4) irrespective or whether the coupon 25 is present or not, that is, without interfering with the coupon 25, is particularly advantageous.
