Abstract

The present invention relates to mixtures of sodium salts and their use, more specifically to mixtures of sodium bicarbonate and sodium percarbonate and to their use for cleaning a container.

Description

Mixtures of sodium salts and their use
This application claims priority to French application FR 1356251 filed on 28 Jun 2013, the whole content of this application being incorporated herein by reference for all purposes.
The present invention relates to mixtures of sodium salts and their use, more specifically to mixtures of sodium bicarbonate and sodium percarbonate and to their use for cleaning a container.
The idea behind the present application is to combine the use of two products available on the market, namely:
- sodium bicarbonate: hygroscopic and odor absorber
- sodium percarbonate : source of active oxygen (detergent and sanitizing agent).
Proposing a ready made product, in an appropriate packaging, would offer the consumer an easy solution to deodorize and to clean containers aiming at containing smelling products able of releasing liquids like home dustbins for instance. Besides, thanks to the additional use of a flagrance, the product could replace unpleasant odors (for instance from garbage) by a fresh flagrance. The product could be poured directly at the bottom of the container (in the trash can), or eventually, it could be directly mixed with the content of the container (i.e. with garbage), in both cases: without the need to rinse and/or to repeat the operation to often.
Since 1997, is available on the market a product commercialized under the brand Oxiclean®. This product, essentially made of a mixture of sodium percarbonate and sodium carbonate, is namely sold to clean and freshen up garbage disposals. It is therefore recommended to place a scoop or two in the drain and to let it sit for an hour before rinsing. Such an operation requires hence some manipulations and besides, bad smells may remain.
The idea behind the present invention is to replace sodium carbonate by sodium bicarbonate so that less manipulation is required and that additionally, bad smells are removed.
Although mixtures of sodium bicarbonate and sodium percarbonate are known for instance from WO 2012/122166, US 6054066, JP3187905 and
US 2006/252666, the mixtures said forth in these documents are not aimed at cleaning garbage containers and hence, often contain additional ingredients and possess a different ratio between the bicarbonate and the percarbonate so that they exhibit different properties than those of the compositions according to the invention.
Therefore, the present invention relates to a mixture containing:
- sodium bicarbonate (1-99%, preferably 50-90%, more preferably 60-80%) in weight with reference to the total weight of the mixture)
- sodium percarbonate (1-99%, preferably 10-50%), more preferably 20-40%) in weight)
- optionally, a flagrance.
Preferably, said mixture consists essentially in the sodium bicarbonate, the sodium percarbonate and optionally a flagrance.
The present invention also concerns the use of such a product to clean containers like garbage containers or in house trash cans.
Thanks to the sodium bicarbonate, eventual liquid leaks will be absorbed by the product (easily if poured at the bottom of the container like a trash can), and unpleasant odors will be absorbed. Besides, thanks to the use of a fragrance the case being, eventual bad odors will be cancelled off. And last but not least: the presence of sodium percarbonate (containing active oxygen) will give an additional added value: the decomposition of sodium percarbonate, due to the presence of liquids (garbage leaks, hot water ...) will free active oxygen, known as a good sanitization element.
Preferred flagrances that can be used in the frame of the invention are mixtures of natural oils (from vegetable origin generally) and synthetic materials.
Flagrances are generally used, the case being, in small amounts typically ranging from 0.001 to 1%, preferably from 0.01 to 0.5% in weight of the mixture (i.e. wt%).
The above preferred ratios of :
- sodium bicarbonate: 60-80 wt%
- sodium percarbonate: 20-40 wt%
allow reaching an optimum of the above mentioned properties and this for an economical price.
In particular, good results have been obtained with a mixture comprising about 70 wt% sodium bicarbonate, about 30 wt% of sodium percarbonate and optionally, a small amount (typically about 0.05 wt%) of flagrance. Preferably, said mixture comprises no other ingredient. In case of industrial applications, the flagrance can often be omitted. Especially suitable sodium bicarbonate grades are commercially available under the brand BICAR® from the company SOLVAY.
Especially suitable sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate - commonly referred to as sodium percarbonate - grades are also available from the company SOLVAY under the brand OXYPER®.
