Definitions
- the present invention relates to a rigid, hinged- lid, slide-open packet of cigarettes.
- Rigid, hinged- lid packets of cigarettes are currently the most widely marketed, by being easy to produce, easy and practical to use, and by effectively protecting the cigarettes inside.
- a rigid, slide-open packet of cigarettes comprises an inner container containing a foil-wrapped group of cigarettes and housed inside an outer container to slide, with respect to the outer container, between a closed position, in which the inner container is fully inserted inside the outer container, and an open position, in which the inner container is partly expelled from the outer container.
- a rigid, hinged-lid, slide-open packet of cigarettes has also been proposed, in which the inner (or outer) container has a lid hinged to rotate between a closed position and an open position closing and opening an open top end of the inner container respectively.
- the lid normally has a connecting tab connected at one end to the lid and at the opposite end to the outer (or . inner) container, to rotate the lid ⁇ automatically'- (i.e. without the user having to touch the lid) as the inner container slides with respect to the outer container.
- the connecting tab normally also serves as a limit stop to arrest expulsion of the inner container and prevent it from detaching from the outer container.
- a rigid, hinged-lid, slide-open packet of cigarettes is formed by folding an inner blank, designed to form the inner container, about a foil-wrapped group of cigarettes, and then folding an outer blank designed to form the outer container.
- Known rigid, hinged-lid, slide-open packets of cigarettes call for the use of not only large, but also irregular- shaped blanks (i.e. shapes that produce considerable waste when punching the blanks from rectangular sheet stock) . Because blanks are always punched from rectangular sheets, the amount of cardboard needed to produce the blank depends, not on the actual area of the blank, but on the area of the smallest rectangle capable of containing (inscribing) the blank.
- Figure 1 shows a front view in perspective of a rigid, hinged-lid, slide-open packet of cigarettes in accordance with the present invention in a closed configuration
- Figure 2 shows a front view in perspective of the
- Figure 1 packet of cigarettes in an open configuration
- Figure 3 shows a rear view in perspective of the Figure 1 packet of cigarettes in a closed configuration
- Figure 4 shows a rear view in perspective of the Figure 1 packet of cigarettes in an open configuration
- Figure 5 shows a front view in perspective of an inner container of the Figure 1 packet of cigarettes
- Figure 6 shows a rear view in perspective of an outer container of the Figure 1 packet of cigarettes, with the lid removed for clarity;
- Figures 7, 8 and 9 show three rear views in perspective of a top portion of the Figure 1 packet of cigarettes in a closed configuration, partly open configuration, and fully open configuration respectively;
- Figure 10 shows a plan view of an inner blank from which to form the Figure 5 inner container
- Figure 11 shows a plan view of an outer blank from which to form the Figure 6 outer container.
- Number 1 in Figures 1-4 indicates as a whole a rigid, hinged-lid, slide-open packet - of cigarettes that slides opens in a straight, translatory movement.
- the packet 1 of cigarettes in Figure 1 comprises a wrapped, i.e. foil-wrapped, group 2 of cigarettes (shown schematically in Figure 2) ; a rigid inner container 3 directly housing wrapped group 2;. and a rigid outer container 4, which houses inner container 3 to allow inner container 3 to slide, with respect to outer container 4 and in a translatory movement, between a closed configuration ( Figures 1 and 3) , in which inner container 3 is inserted fully inside outer container 4, and an open configuration ( Figures 2 and 4) , in which inner container 3 is expelled partly from outer container 4 for access to wrapped group 2 of cigarettes.
- Inner container 3 is parallelepiped-shaped with a rectangular cross section, is cup-shaped, and has an open top end 5 (shown in Figures 2 and 4) .
- Packet 1 of cigarettes comprises a cup- shaped lid 6 hinged to inner container 3 along a hinge 7 to rotate, with respect to inner container 3, between a closed position ( Figures 1 and 3) and an open position ( Figures 2 and 4) closing and opening open top end 5 respectively.
- inner container 3 has a bottom wall 8 opposite open top end 5; a . front wall 9 and an opposite parallel rear wall 10; and two parallel lateral walls 11 interposed between walls 9 and 10.
- Four longitudinal edges are defined between walls 9, 10 and lateral walls 11; and four transverse edges are defined between walls 9, 10, 11 and bottom wall 8.
- lid 6 is cup- shaped, and has a top wall 12 (which is parallel to and opposite bottom wall 8 of inner container 3 when lid 6 is in the closed position) ; a rear wall 13 connected to rear wall 10 of inner container 3 by hinge 7; and two parallel opposite lateral walls 14.
- outer container 4 is cup-shaped, is parallelepiped- shaped with a rectangular cross section, and has a bottom wall 15 opposite an open top end 16; a front wall 17 and an opposite parallel rear wall 18; and two parallel lateral walls 19 interposed between walls 17 and 18.
- Four longitudinal edges are defined between walls 17, 18 and lateral walls 19; and four transverse edges are defined between walls 17, 18, 19 and bottom wall 15.
- rear wall 10 of inner container 3 has a top appendix 20 connected to rear wall 10 by hinge 7 of lid 6 (defined by a transverse fold line) and glued to rear wall 13 of lid 6.
- rear wall 13 of lid 6 is connected permanently and mechanically to rear wall 18 of outer container 4 by a connecting tab 21. It is important to note that rear wall 13 of lid 6 is connected to rear wall 18 of outer container 4 solely by connecting tab 21, i.e. with the exception of connecting tab 21, rear wall 13 of lid 6 is completely separate from and independent of rear wall 18 of outer container 4.
- connecting tab 21 originates at an intermediate portion of rear wall 18 of outer container 4 (i.e. at a given distance from the top edge of rear wall 18 of outer container 4) and terminates at an intermediate portion of rear wall 13 of lid 6 (i.e.
- connecting tab 21 is connected to rear wall 13 of lid 6 close to a top edge of rear wall 13 of lid 6, i.e. the point at which connecting tab 21 is connected to rear wall 13 of lid 6 is closer to the top edge than to the bottom edge of rear wall 13 of lid 6.
- Connecting tab 21 provides for rotating lid 6 ⁇ automatically' (i.e. without the user having to touch lid 6) as inner container 3 slides with respect to outer container 4.
- inner container 3 by virtue of connecting tab 21 connecting rear wall 13 of lid 6 mechanically to rear wall 18 of outer container 4, inner container 3, as it slides with respect to outer container 4 from the closed to the open configuration, pushes lid 6 from the closed to the open position ⁇ automatically' (i.e. without the user having to touch lid 6) .
- inner container 3 draws lid 6 from the open to the closed position ⁇ automatically' (i.e. without the user having to touch lid 6) .
- the user need simply exert sufficient force to slide inner container 3 with respect to outer container 4, without touching lid 6, to rotate the lid Automatically' .
- connecting tab 21 also acts as a limit stop to limit slide of inner container 3 with respect to outer container 4, i.e. defines a fully open position (i.e. maximum expulsion of inner container 3 from outer container 4, and therefore maximum rotation of lid 6 about hinge 7) in which inner container 3 is prevented from sliding any further (and, therefore, lid 6 is prevented from rotating any further about hinge 7) .
- the fully open position i.e. maximum expulsion of inner container 3 from outer container 4, and therefore maximum rotation of lid 6 about hinge 7) is shown in Figure 9..
- outer container 4 has a through window 22 ( Figures 1 and 2) formed through front wall 17 for access to front wall 9 of inner container 3 underneath, and by which to push inner container 3 between the closed and open configurations .
- Containers 3 and 4 of packet 1 of cigarettes are formed from respective blanks 23 and 24 shown in Figures 10 and 11 respectively.
- blank 24 also forms lid 6 and connecting tab 21.
- Blanks 23 and 24 each comprise, among other things, a number of parts, which, where possible, are indicated using the same reference numbers, with superscripts, as for the corresponding parts of respective container 3, 4.
- the inner blank 23 has two transverse fold lines 25, and a number of longitudinal fold lines 26 which define, between the two transverse fold lines 25, a panel 9' forming front wall 9 of inner container 3; two panels 11' located on opposite sides of panel 9' and forming lateral walls 11 of inner container 3; and two panels 10' located on opposite sides of panels 11' and together forming rear wall 10 of inner container 3 (i.e. rear wall 10 of inner container 3 is formed by two separate, side by side panels 10' ) .
- a panel 8' forming bottom wall 8 of inner container 3 is connected to panel 9' along a transverse fold line 25.
- Each panel 11' is connected along a transverse fold line 25 to a fastening tab 27 which, when folding blank 23, is folded 90° with respect to panel 11' and glued to an inner surface of panel 8' .
- Each panel 10' is connected along a transverse fold line 25 to a tab. 20' which forms half of top appendix 20 of rear wall 10 of inner container 3.
- the transverse fold line 25 connecting panels 10' to tabs 20' defines hinge 7 allowing lid 6 to rotate with respect to wall 10 of inner container 3.
- outer blank 24 has two longitudinal fold lines 28, and a number of transverse fold lines 29 which define, between the two longitudinal fold lines 28, a reinforcing panel 17" which is glued to the inside of a panel 17'; a panel 17' forming front wall 17 of outer container 4; a panel 15' forming bottom wall 15 of outer container 4; . a panel 18' forming rear wall 18 of outer container 4; a panel 13' forming rear wall 13 of lid 6; a panel 12' forming top wall 12 of lid 6; and a reinforcing panel 12" which is glued to the inside of panel 12' .
- Panel 18' is separated from panel 13' by a transverse cut 30 which is only interrupted at connecting tab 21, which is therefore the only connection between panel 18' and panel 13'.
- Panel 17' has two wings 19', which form respective outer portions of lateral walls 19 of outer container 4, are located on opposite sides of panel 17', and are connected to panel 17' by longitudinal fold lines 28.
- Panel 18' has two wings 19", which form respective inner portions of lateral walls 19 of outer container 4, are located on opposite sides of panel 18', and are connected to panel 18' by longitudinal fold lines 28.
- Each wing 19" has a fastening tab 31 connected to wing 19" along a transverse fold line 29, and which, when folding blank 24, is folded 90° with respect to wing 19" and glued to an inner surface of panel 15' .
- Panel 13' has two wings 14', which form lateral walls 14 of lid 6, are located on opposite sides of panel 13' , and are connected to panel 13' by longitudinal fold lines 28.
- Each wing 14' has a fastening tab 32 connected to wing 14' along a transverse fold line 29, and which, when folding blank 24, is folded 90° with respect to wing 14' and glued to an inner surface of panel 12' .
- Fastening tabs 32 are preferably complementary in shape to reinforcing panel 12", so that fastening tabs 32 and reinforcing panel 12" cover the whole inner surface of panel 12' (i.e. of top wall 12 of lid 6) leaving substantially no exposed areas and with no overlapping.
- connecting tab 21 is bounded by two parallel, side by side through cuts 33, which extend longitudinally (i.e. parallel to longitudinal fold lines 28) from panel 18' to panel 13' (i.e. through both panel 18' and panel 13' ) .
- transverse and longitudinal edges are all square. In alternative embodiments not shown, some longitudinal and/or transverse edges may be rounded or- bevelled.
- Packet 1 of cigarettes described has numerous advantages .
- packet - 1 of cigarettes described slides open, and has a hinged lid 6 which is rotated ⁇ automatically' by inner container 3 sliding with respect to outer container 4.
- packet 1 of cigarettes described is cheap to produce and environment -friendly, by being made from small, regular- shaped blanks 23 and 24 (i.e. of such a shape as to produce a minimum amount of waste when punching the blank from rectangular sheet stock) .
- inner blank 23 in Figure 10 can be produced with no waste at all, firstly by being almost rectangular in shape, and secondly by the shape of the bottom portion negatively reproducing the shape of the top portion.
- packet 1 of cigarettes described can be made from a small amount of packing material (i.e. cardboard), and is therefore cheap to produce and environment -friendly (in terms of both raw material production and disposal of the empty packets) .
