Abstract

A method of cleaning a reverse osmosis or nanofiltration membranes comprises supplying bubbles suspended in a stream of cleaning solution to the membrane. The bubbles can be supplied in pulses and/or the aerated solution may be evenly distributed over the membrane surface. The bubbles can be produced by a venturi device. A venturi device for use in the method has an air inlet provided with a plurality of tubes and a reverse osmosis plant in which the method can be carried out includes a venturi device connected in-line between the cleaning tank and the fluid inlet.
