Description

表示装置
 本発明は、表示装置に関する。
 近年は、有機EL(Organic Electroluminescence)表示装置や液晶表示装置など、薄型の表示装置が普及している。
 例えば特許文献1において、発光パネルの発光層の一例として有機層を用いることが記載されている。特許文献1には、さらに、両面から光が出射する発光パネルの両面に光学フィルムを設けることが記載されている。これら光学フィルムは、透過する光の偏光方向が互いに直交するようになっている。これにより、発光パネルの背景が透けて見えることを抑制できる、と記載されている。
 また特許文献2には、赤色のLED(Light Emitting Diode)、緑色のLED、及び青色のLEDを有する光源の上に透過型の液晶パネルを配置した表示装置が記載されている。特許文献2には、さらに、LEDの発光強度をキャリブレーションする際に、赤色のLED、緑色のLED、及び青色のLEDを時分割して駆動させることが記載されている。

 薄型の表示装置は、様々な場所に設置することができる。一方で、表示装置を設置することにより、表示装置の背景は見えなくなる。本発明者は、表示装置の背景を見えるようにすると、表示装置の設置場所の自由度が増える、と考えた。
 本発明が解決しようとする課題としては、情報を表示すべき側とは逆側への不要な表示や光の漏洩をおさえつつ、表示装置の背景を見えるようにすることが一例として挙げられる。
 請求項1に記載の発明は、第1面側に情報を表示する透光性の面表示部と、
 前記面表示部の第2面側に設けられ、光の透過量を制御する光透過量調整部と、
 前記面表示部が発光するタイミングに基づいて前記光透過量調整部を制御する制御部と、
を備える表示装置である。
 上述した目的、およびその他の目的、特徴および利点は、以下に述べる好適な実施の形態、およびそれに付随する以下の図面によってさらに明らかになる。

 以下、本発明の実施の形態について、図面を用いて説明する。尚、すべての図面において、同様な構成要素には同様の符号を付し、適宜説明を省略する。
 なお、以下に示す説明において、制御部300の各構成要素は、ハードウエア単位の構成ではなく、機能単位のブロックを示している。制御部300の各構成要素は、任意のコンピュータのCPU、メモリ、メモリにロードされた本図の構成要素を実現するプログラム、そのプログラムを格納するハードディスクなどの記憶メディア、ネットワーク接続用インタフェースを中心にハードウエアとソフトウエアの任意の組合せによって実現される。そして、その実現方法、装置には様々な変形例がある。
 図1は、実施形態に係る表示装置10の構成を示す図である。表示装置10は情報、例えば動画、静止画、または文字情報などを表示する装置であり、面表示部100、光透過量調整部200、及び制御部300を備える。面表示部100は、透光性を有しており、第1面側に情報を表示する。光透過量調整部200は、面表示部100の第2面側に設けられ光の透過量を制御する。制御部300は、面表示部100が発光するタイミングに基づいて光透過量調整部200を制御する。以下、詳細に説明する。
 面表示部100は、例えば有機EL表示パネルであるが、液晶表示パネルなど、他の方式で情報を表示するものであってもよい。
 光透過量調整部200は、例えば液晶を有している。この場合、光透過量調整部200は、液晶の配向方向を制御することにより、光透過量調整部200における光の透過量を制御する。ただし、光透過量調整部200は、他の方式、例えばMEMS(Micro Electro Mechanical System)で駆動するシャッターを用いて光の透過量を制御しても良い。
 本実施形態によれば、面表示部100は透光性を有しているため、面表示部100の第1面側、すなわち情報が表示される側にいる人は、面表示部100に情報が表示されていないときかつ光透過量調整部200における光の透過量が多い場合には面表示部100の背景を見ることができる。また、面表示部100の第2面側には光透過量調整部200が位置している。このため、制御部300による制御を適切に行うことにより、面表示部100が透光性を有していても、面表示部100の第2面側の人に情報が鏡像状態で認識されることを抑制できる。具体的には、制御部300は、面表示部100が発光するタイミングに基づいて、光透過量調整部200を制御する。
(実施例1)
 図2は、実施例1に係る表示装置10の構成を示す図である。本実施例において、光透過量調整部200は液晶層210を有している。詳細には、光透過量調整部200は、液晶層210及び偏光部232,234を有している。液晶層210は、偏光部232,234の間に位置している。偏光部232の偏光方向は、偏光部234の偏光方向に直交している。また、液晶層210は第1電極222及び第2電極224によって狭持されている。そして第1電極222及び第2電極224は、制御部300に接続されている。すなわち液晶層210における液晶の配向方向は、制御部300によって制御される。
 図3は、制御部300による光透過量調整部200の制御の第1例を示す図である。本図に示す例において、制御部300は、面表示部100が発光するタイミングにおいては、光透過量調整部200の光の透過量を少なくし(好ましくは最小値、例えば5%以下)、それ以外のタイミングにおいては、光透過量調整部200の光の透過量を大きくする(好ましくは最大)。このようにすると、面表示部100が発光しないタイミングにおいては、人は、面表示部100の第1面側及び第2面側の双方から面表示部100の背景を認識することができる。また、面表示部100の第2面側(光透過量調整部200が設けられている側)に面表示部100からの光が出射することを抑制できる。そして、面表示部100の第2面側にいる人には、面表示部100の存在を意識させにくくすることができる。
 さらに、面表示部100を30Hz以上で点滅させた場合、面表示部100の第1面側にいる人には面表示部100が連続して情報を表示していると認識させることができる。
 図4は、制御部300による光透過量調整部200の制御の第2例を示す図である。本図に示す例は、制御部300が、面表示部100の発光が開始するタイミングよりも前に、光透過量調整部200の光透過量を少なく(好ましくは最小値、例えば5%以下)する点を除いて、図3に示した例と同様である。このようにすると、例えば信号を入力してから液晶の配向方向が変化するまでに時間を要しても、面表示部100の第2面側から光が出射されることを抑制できる。
 本実施例によれば、光透過量調整部200は、液晶層210及び偏光部232,234を有している。このため、制御部300は、容易に光透過量調整部200の光透過率を制御することができる。
(実施例2)
 図5は、実施例2に係る表示装置10の使用態様を示す図である。本実施例において表示装置10は、車両、例えば自動車内でナビゲーション装置として使用される。表示装置10の面表示部100がダッシュボード410上に取り付けられた場合、面表示部100が透光性を有していると、対向車の運転手にとって面表示部100からの光が運転の妨げになる。一方、面表示部100が透光性を有していない場合、車内から外を見るときに面表示部100が視界を狭める。
 これに対して本実施例では、制御部300は、図3又は図4に示した制御を行う。このため、表示装置10が取り付けられた車両の運転手にナビゲーション情報を認識させることができ、かつ面表示部100からの光が対向車の運転手に認識されることを抑制できる。また、面表示部100がナビゲーション情報を表示していない間、光透過量調整部200の透過量を大きくすることで、車内から外を見るときに面表示部100が視界を狭めることを抑制できる。
(実施例3)
 図6は、実施例3に係る表示装置10が有する面表示部100及び光透過量調整部200の構成を示す断面図である。本実施例に係る表示装置10は、面表示部100及び光透過量調整部200の構成を除いて、実施形態及び実施例1,2のいずれかと同様の構成である。
 本図に示す例において、面表示部100はアクティブ型の有機EL表示装置であり、有機機能層104が画素単位に分かれている。すなわち面表示部100は、マトリクス状に配置された複数の発光素子(有機EL素子)を有している。そして面表示部100の透光性基板110(透光性層の一例)の第1面側には、第1電極102、有機機能層104、第2電極106、スイッチング素子125(例えばTFT(Thin Film Transistor))、及びスイッチング素子125に接続する配線が形成されている。スイッチング素子125は、制御部300によって制御される。また透光性基板110の第2面側すなわち発光素子とは逆側には、光路変更層112、例えばモスアイ構造などの反射防止フィルム又は光取出フィルムなどの光学フィルムが取り付けられている。
 有機機能層104は、正孔注入層、発光層、及び電子注入層を少なくとも有している。有機機能層104は、さらに正孔輸送層及び電子輸送層の少なくとも一方を有していても良い。有機機能層104の各層は、蒸着法によって形成されていても良いし、塗布法によって形成されていても良い。
 なお、面表示部100はパッシブ型の有機EL表示装置であっても良い。
 また光透過量調整部200は、複数の領域に分割されている。そして制御部300は、光透過量調整部200の光透過量を、複数の領域のそれぞれで個別に制御することができる。本図に示す例では、光透過量調整部200の第2電極224は面表示部100の画素単位に分かれている。そして複数の第2電極224の各々は、スイッチング素子225、例えばTFTに接続されている。スイッチング素子225は、制御部300によって制御される。すなわち光透過量調整部200は、面表示部100の画素単位で光透過量を制御することができる。ただし、一つの第2電極224は、面表示部100の複数の画素を覆う形状及び大きさになっていても良い。
 そして面表示部100の一部の領域にのみ情報が表示されている場合、制御部300は、光透過量調整部200の一部、具体的には面表示部100の情報表示領域に対応する領域のみ、面表示部100が発光するタイミングにおいて光の透過量を少なくする。そして制御部300は、光透過量調整部200の他の領域については、光の透過量を大きく(例えば最大に)する。
 本実施例によっても、実施形態及び実施例1,2のいずれかと同様の効果を得ることができる。また、制御部300は、面表示部100の一部にのみ情報が表示されている場合、光透過量調整部200のうち面表示部100の情報表示領域に対応する部分のみ、面表示部100が発光するタイミングにおいて光の透過量を少なくする。このため、面表示部100のうち光透過量調整部200によって透光性が失われる領域を狭くすることができる。
 また、面表示部100は光路変更層112を有しているため、面表示部100の光取出効率は高くなる。
(実施例4)
 図7は、実施例4に係る表示装置10が有する面表示部100及び光透過量調整部200の構成を示す図である。本実施例に係る表示装置10は、面表示部100の構成を除いて、実施例3と同様の構成である。
 面表示部100は液晶表示パネルであり、バックライト160、拡散層150、液晶層114、フィルタ層140、及び偏光部132,134を有している。液晶層114の第1面には第1電極122が設けられており、液晶層114の第2面には第2電極124が設けられている。第2電極124は画素単位に分割されている。そして第2電極124には、スイッチング素子125を介して配線が接続されている。またフィルタ層140には、複数のカラーフィルタ142が設けられている。カラーフィルタ142は、平面視で第2電極124と重なっている。
 拡散層150は、バックライト160の光を拡散させるために設けられている。そして拡散層150には、複数のスリット152が設けられている。スリット152は、面表示部100に透光性を持たせるために設けられている。またフィルタ層140には、カラーフィルタ142が設けられていない領域がある。そして、スリット152を透過した光がカラーフィルタ142が設けられていない領域及び各カラーフィルタ142を透過することにより、背景を見ることが出来る。なお、カラーフィルタ142を通ると他の色は透過しないので、光の透過効率が低下する。それを改善するために、カラーフィルタ142を設けていない部分にもスリット152を配置している。この領域は、面表示部100の透光部101の少なくとも一部となる。
 また、カラーフィルタ142およびカラーフィルタ142を設置していない部分には拡散層150がない(スリット152がある)ので、バックライト160の発光時には、光を各カラーフィルタ142およびカラーフィルタ142を設置していない部分に当てることができ、かつ、バックライト160の非発光時には、背景からの光を散乱することなく透過させることができる。
 さらに、バックライト160の発光時に、カラーフィルタ142が設置していない部分の液晶を制御することにより、輝度のダイナミックレンジを拡大することも可能である。
 本実施例によれば、拡散層150にスリット152を設けているため、透光性の面表示部100として液晶表示パネルを用いることができる。
 以上、図面を参照して実施形態及び実施例について述べたが、これらは本発明の例示であり、上記以外の様々な構成を採用することもできる。

Claims (7)

  1.  第1面側に情報を表示する透光性の面表示部と、
     前記面表示部の第2面側に設けられ、光の透過量を制御する光透過量調整部と、
     前記面表示部が発光するタイミングに基づいて前記光透過量調整部を制御する制御部と、
    を備える表示装置。
  2.  請求項1に記載の表示装置において、
     前記制御部は、
      前記面表示部が発光するタイミングにおいて、前記光透過量調整部の光の透過量を少なくし、
      前記面表示部が発光しないタイミングにおいて、前記光透過量調整部の光の透過量を大きくする表示装置。
  3.  請求項2に記載の表示装置において、
     前記制御部は、前記面表示部の発光タイミングの開始前から、前記光透過量調整部の光の透過量を少なくする表示装置。
  4.  請求項2又は3に記載の表示装置において、
     前記光透過量調整部は、複数の領域に分割されており、
     前記制御部は、前記光透過量調整部の前記複数の領域における光透過量を個別に制御し、かつ、前記面表示部の一部のみに情報が表示されている場合には、前記複数の領域のうち前記表示装置の前記一部に対応する領域の光の透過量を、前記面表示部が発光するタイミングにおいて少なくする表示装置。
  5.  請求項1~4のいずれか一項に記載の表示装置において、
     前記面表示部は、
      透光性基板と、
      前記透光性基板の第1面側にマトリクス状に配置された複数の発光素子と、
      前記透光性基板の第2面側に設けられた光路変更層と、
    を備え、
     前記光透過量調整部は、前記複数の発光素子を基準として前記透光性基板とは逆側に設けられている表示装置。
  6.  請求項1~4のいずれか一項に記載の表示装置において、
     前記面表示部は、液晶表示部であり、
     前記液晶表示部は、
      バックライトと、
      前記バックライトの光を散乱させる拡散板と、
    を備え、
     前記拡散板には複数のスリットが設けられている表示装置。
  7.  請求項1~6のいずれか一項に記載の表示装置において、
     前記光透過量調整部は、
     2つの偏光層と
     前記2つの偏光層の間に位置する液晶層と、
    を備える表示装置。
