Definitions
- the present invention relates to a man-machine interface of the type that can be used in a cockpit of a means of transport such as a motor vehicle or an aircraft.
- This interface is arranged on a dashboard of said means of transport. It relates more particularly to low-definition display systems for motor vehicles that display an image giving information to users.
- vehicle operating parameter In a means of transport such as for example a motor vehicle, visual cues and man-machine interfaces capable of transmitting information data enabling a driver to understand the state of a vehicle more quickly and easily can be provided.
- vehicle operating parameter This parameter may concern, for example, the operating state of a speed controller or the exceeding of a reference speed determined by said controller. In all cases it constitutes a piece of useful information for the driver of this vehicle in the context of driving said vehicle.
- the displays cooperate with a semi-reflecting mirror placed at 45 ° from said display.
- low-definition displays can be positioned at different places on the dashboard of the vehicle and in particular in front of the driver, behind the steering wheel where the image of the low-definition display can be superimposed optically on an instrument cluster placed behind the wheel.
- the low-definition display can also be placed behind and above the steering wheel.
- This type of handset location is becoming more and more common. In this case, the assembly is not compact and has a relatively large thickness, incompatible with the usual thickness of these devices. This then prevents to mount in the same vehicle these two types of handsets.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a low definition display that allows a display in front of the steering wheel while being compact, compact and combines a perspective effect.
- the display device according to the invention is associated with an instrumentation handset and comprises a low-definition display, a semi-transparent mirror disposed on a dashboard and vis-à-vis said low-definition display; it is remarkable that the semi-transparent mirror makes an angle with the low definition display greater than 45 °.
- the more than 45 ° orientation of the semi-transparent mirror with respect to the low-definition display gives an inverted image where the top of the sensible image representing the horizon is located closer to the observer / driver than the lower part. supposed to be closer.
- This image where the part supposed to appear distant is close and the part supposed to appear close is further could disturb the reading of the driver especially if one looks for a perspective effect, which diverted the equipment manufacturers of this solution.
- the brain puts the perspective in the position that was sought. This correction is made easier by the fact that the definition of the image is blurred. This also makes it possible to envisage semi-transparent mirror surfaces that would not be planar, especially with defects, since there are no significant optical needs.
- the low-definition display has a variable brightness.
- the low-definition display is thus able to provide a much higher brightness than a standard display, which allows the detection by the eye of the driver in his peripheral field of vision while he is focused on the road. If there is no information, the low-definition display is off. On the contrary, if information is to be given to the driver, the low-definition display or a low-definition display area becomes brighter than the other displays thus alerting the driver.
- the low-definition display is placed behind a driving wheel. This position is the most natural for the driver. This position allows the driver to have instinctive reactions, because it gives an immediate understanding of right-left positioning especially for changes to queues, the alert for a vehicle overtaking or assistance parking for example. This is the effect of lateralization.
- the low-definition display is horizontal.
- the term horizontal in the present application a line parallel to the line of sight of the driver that can be inclined relative to the ground.
- the low display definition is placed horizontally so that the image emitted by the low-definition display is not visible to the driver, and does not disturb his reading.
- the angle between the low-definition display and the semi-transparent mirror is 71 °. This angle makes it possible to have a much smaller thickness of the device.
- the low-definition display is disposed above an instrumentation handset.
- the image of the low-definition display is superimposed on the instrumentation handset.
- Adjustment of the brightness of the low-definition display is possible to take into account the brightness of the passenger compartment of the vehicle or the external environment, especially in the evening with a sun setting in front of the driver, which is the worst case of figure.
- the semi-transparent mirror has a horizontal component of less than 70 mm.
- This horizontal component of 70mm corresponds to the projection of the semi-transparent mirror on the axis according to which the user looks at the combined instrumentation, it must correspond to the size of the cap, the assembly not exceeding a normal handset without display.
- the low-definition display projects a trapezoidal image.
- This trapezoidal shape evokes the perspective road seen by the driver.
- this form represents the road with a broad part in the foreground (at the bottom of the virtual image) and a narrow part in the background (at the top of the virtual image). The vision of the driver is then in line with that of a road that is moving away.
- a multifunction display is arranged behind the semi-transparent mirror.
- a high-definition display of the TFT type (abbreviation for "Thin Film Transistor” or a “field effect transistor") or of the OLED type (an abbreviation for "Organic Light-Emitting Diode”).
- TFT Thin Film Transistor
- OLED Organic Light-Emitting Diode
- the multifunction display keeps the legal information displayed as the speed in the area of this display.
- the handset, multi-function display and low-definition display can therefore be placed together in an efficient manner with display and reaction synergies induced in the driver.
- the invention also covers an instrumentation handset accommodating a display device as described above, said instrumentation handset being remarkable in that the semi-transparent mirror constitutes its external part visible by the driver. It is thus easier to integrate the display device instrumentation combined with the dashboard.
- the low-definition display is placed in a cap of the instrumentation handset.
- This position protects the low-definition display of the sun and thus avoid reverberations that could disturb the driver.
- This position also makes it possible to facilitate the flow of air over the printed circuit on which the components of the low-definition display are located, as well as the LEDs (acronym for "Light Emitting Diode", that is to say electroluminescent diode) that compose it.
- the air circulation is quite natural.

- This display device 1 is integrated in the instrumentation handset 4.
- the latter has a length L2 along the axis 50 relatively small and at least significantly shorter than L1 (see Figure 1). It can be seen that the instrumentation handset 4 of FIG. 2 is shorter than that of FIG. 1, in which the length of the instrumentation handset 4 exceeds the length of the low-definition display 3, which would require increasing the length instrumentation handset 4 beyond the usual dimensions for this type of product.

- the low-definition display 3 is placed in a cap 6 (see Figure 5) placed above the instrumentation handset 4.
