Abstract

A controller for an internal combustion engine apparatus equipped with a variable valve timing system being configured to change an operation timing of at least one of an intake valve and an exhaust valve. The controller includes an electronic control unit. The electronic control unit is configured to control an electric motor and drive the variable valve timing system within a stop period from after the internal combustion engine is stopped till the engine is started after the stop. The electronic control unit is configured to be maintained at power-on state when a temperature of at least one component of the electric motor and the drive circuit thereof is higher than a predetermined temperature even if the electronic control unit is required to be power-off state, in order to prevent the overheating of the electric motor of the variable valve timing system or its drive circuit.
