- the present invention has been conceived for its application in the field of infrastructure or resources available for the deployment of training actions aimed at the acquisition by its students of the qualification associated with welding processes.
- Welding is a complex process that is present in a usual way in the vast majority of the objects we surround our with on a daily basis: vehicles, buildings, appliances, furniture, infrastructure. That is why, both technically and aesthetically, a welding process must be carried out by personnel equipped with the necessary qualification and professional training. For this, an adequate training process based on the most demanding standards is essential, since our own security can depend on it in many cases.
- the present invention consists in the design and development of a new advanced device, currently non-existent in the market with the technologies that it will incorporate, for the simulation of all types of industrial welding with different materials and alloys, in multiple positions and with the standardized test specimens used in the training, oriented to the training of welders both in initial stages and in more advanced specialties, useful in the processes of recruitment of welders by companies and usable as a replacement for a significant percentage of hours of practices in real workshop, in the processes of homologation and certification of welders based on international standards, both European (EWF) and American (AWS).
- EWF European
- AWS American
- the present invention provides valuable knowledge about advanced training-oriented simulation systems, in order to facilitate the learning process in this case of future welders, so that not only will the progress and productivity of the Welding activity, it will also boost the training systems.
- the person has the experience of visualizing the digital work shop represented while in reality in a completely different or even empty room, and also with the specimens (in the best case represented by physical pieces that do not have the dimensions or characteristics of the actual specimens used in the workshop) and the welding torches (which also do not correspond to the actual ones used in welding).
- Virtual realities are almost the limit of communication technologies as they seek to catch the user while becoming invisible.
- an immersive virtual reality environment is explored, the user loses sight of the physical world and instead explores a space recreated with computer images.
- Augmented Reality is an evolution of the previous one by combining real elements with virtual images.
- the user can work and examine real 3D objects while receiving additional information (for example in graphic form, texts or sounds) about these objects or about the task they are performing.
- Augmented Reality allows the user to stay in touch with their work environment, while their focus is not on the computer, but in the real world.
- the role played by the computer is to increase reality to improve the user's pedagogical experience.
- Virtual Reality immerses the user into a virtual world that completely replaces the outside real world
- Augmented Reality lets the user see the real world around them and increases their vision of their environment through the superposition or composition of 3D virtual objects. This gives the user the feeling that the objects of the real and virtual worlds coexist.
- Augmented Reality systems take the computer to the user's real working environment, while Virtual Reality systems try to bring the real world into the computer.
- Simulation is a way of approaching the study of any real dynamic system in which it is feasible to have a behavioral model and in which the variables and parameters that characterize it can be distinguished.
- simulation tools have evolved in a very positive way over time, so that they have been incorporating new technologies and functionalities that have made them more robust, versatile and modern, and much more functional. .
- Augmented Reality is the term used to define a direct or indirect vision of a real-world physical environment, whose elements are combined with virtual elements for the creation of a mixed reality in real time, in this case, for the improvement of the training and pedagogical user experience.
- This new technology complements the perception and interaction with the real world and allows the user to be in an augmented real environment with additional information generated by a computer. Therefore, Augmented Reality offers many new possibilities for interaction, which make it present in many and several areas, such as architecture, entertainment, art, medicine or virtual communities.
- the proposed system will generate virtually only the result of the user's action during the execution of the welding on the selected piece, as well as its melting bath effects, sparks, smoke.
- the user will act on a real physical piece of dimensions Standardized standards (based on internationally recognized standards by the European Welding Federation and the American Welding Society) for training and in the same standardized welding positions, visualizing the welding as it would be done with a real equipment, and at the same time you can Continue interacting with your environment, classmates, teacher, without losing track of the reality around you.
- the sensations obtained are much more real and therefore the most efficient and useful learning process.
- the present invention it is intended to improve and perfect the training of welders so that the student, using the real elements of any welding process (torches, connectors, box), in a real scenario to choose (type of test tube, thickness, position, situation, type of material, type of joint), and by entering all the necessary real parameters of a welding equipment (intensity, voltage, protective gas, electrode / wire / rod diameter, polarity), you can execute welding and its final result precisely and analogous to reality.
- the teacher can easily and intuitively manage different courses and students, and freely design welding exercises to assign them individually to each student based on their level of learning, controlling and monitoring their execution in real time. from your own remote device without being physically in the training classroom, what you can do with as many students as you want through the specific Master software that is also part of the simulator device, through the specifically designed network connection architecture for the system, which will guarantee its maximum efficiency and safety in its operation and capabilities.

- the "Advanced device for welding training based on simulation with augmented reality and remotely upgradeable” it is a simulator that provides a welding environment similar to that of a workshop with real equipment, so that the user can carry out the same operations and procedures obtaining the same visual and sound results of a field welding and that is based on the integration of the following characterizing elements:
- the Simulator-student claimed here incorporates its own invention software formed among others by different integrated software libraries that provide for the exact behavior of a welding machine and based on the parameters selected by the teacher / student (voltage, intensity, type and proportion of gas), the type of material and joint, the type of test tube and its position, the type of welding procedure chosen (electrode, MIG / MAG (GMAW, FCAW) or TIG (GTAW)), and at the position / inclination / distance of the welding torch, offer an identical result to that obtained with real equipment.
- the teacher / student voltage, intensity, type and proportion of gas
- the type of material and joint the type of test tube and its position
- the type of welding procedure chosen electrode, MIG / MAG (GMAW, FCAW) or TIG (GTAW)
- GTAW TIG
- Augmented Reality It differs from the virtual reality in that while it seeks to replace the real world, the Augmented Reality what it does is complement and enrich it.
- Virtual Reality introduces the user into an artificial and fictitious computing environment, but Augmented Reality does not keep the user from reality but keeps him in touch with her while fusing them with virtual objects to improve his perception.
- This capability is a pioneer and produces an incredibly realistic simulation experience, in which the user can see a physical piece on which a virtual image is represented - for example a real test tube with a virtual carbon steel texture -, and other tools welding - for example the welding torch, the electrode and the supply rod, or even their own hands - superimposed on the first in the same field of vision, on which the system generates other virtual images that not only do not they collide with each other, but the system is able to distinguish them to show them in the appropriate and logical way for the user to visualize them by determining the different levels of overlap and depth as it happens in reality.
- the advanced Augmented Reality system that incorporates the present invention cuts out those elements that are hidden below the virtual image and that should be on top, and repaints them on top so that they are displayed consistently by the user.
- the Augmented Reality processing consists in that the system automatically searches for the images of certain patterns such as the markers of the specimens or torches, or the LEDs of the supply rod or the electrode. Once the pattern is detected, the system places it in space both in three-dimensional position and in orientation.
- the proposed simulation device bases all the Augmented Reality processing in the OpenCV artificial vision library, which is a set of functions related to image processing.
- the artificial vision system through Augmented Reality that incorporates the present invention is composed of three parts: image capture, detection of the elements and graphic representation.
- CV Image library that manages the use of cameras. This library is capable of detecting all the cameras that are connected and capturing the images taken by them. The captured images are transformed to a format that supports OpenCV.
- CV Stereo library for the creation of a stereo vision system based on cameras recognized by CV Image.
- Vlib library that interprets the previous library and generates all the welding graphics.
- Augmented Reality Another of the most important technological challenges that Augmented Reality must solve refers to the need to know where the user is located with reference to their surroundings, as well as the problem of monitoring to recognize user movements and project graphics related to the user. environment from the angle in which it is at each moment observing reality. It should be taken into account in this regard that computer generated virtual objects must always be positioned in reference to the real world but from the subjective position of the user that can vary at any time.
- the technology associated with the present invention ensures that the user sees the fusion between the real and virtual images correctly: the software updates the overlapping elements as the user and the visible objects move to give a coherent image to the user's eyes.
- HMDs Head-Mounted Displays
- video glasses are normally used, a type of device in the form of glasses that incorporates microdisplays that allow you to see a computer generated video signal.
- the outside world is captured by one or more cameras that show real and virtual images already merged to the user through video glasses.
- video glasses or commercial head-mounted displays of the first-level market are used, such as the Vuzix, eMagin or Kopin brands.
- two micro-cameras stereo vision
- Point Gray The Imaging Source, or IDS, which are located in a welding mask commercial of those used in real welding at the user's eye level.
- IDS The Imaging Source
- a welding mask of its own design could be used with the ability to accommodate one or two microdisplays (two screens) and two optical lenses, and incorporating the electronics and connectors necessary to manage its operation and connectivity to the central unit of the invention.
- the real environment is captured in stereo through the two micro-cameras that are housed in the welding mask, this information is obtained and processed by the system that generates the virtual graphics that overlap the real environment generating a mixed reality in time real, which is offered to the user through video glasses or head-mounted displays.
- the software implemented can be described as a simulation software for real welding exercises oriented to the training and training of both experienced and apprentice welders, which is controlled by a software-teacher through a network connection through a Class Control application that allows the teacher to assign the desired exercises or theory to each student individually, as well as monitor the status and execution of each exercise in real time, as well as retrieve all the information related to the exercises performed by each student for review or subsequent evaluation.
- the software teacher manages in real time everything related to a conventional class: you can create courses, register or cancel students, propose exercises and assign your own theory to the system. Filing, including the exercises performed by the students to be evaluated by the teacher thanks to its analysis module, which allows the teacher to see on a graphical diagram the deviation that the student has suffered in the execution of the exercise with respect to the execution ideal, and all about different physical parameters (speed, electric arc distance, working angle, feed angle) and different welding defects (porosity, splashes, bites, lack of fusion).
- the invention has been designed to be used in a standard training class: just as a classroom has desks where students sit and a table for the teacher, a type classroom in which the present invention would be installed would be composed of the number desired student simulators plus a computer with the teacher software (master equipment) interconnected in wired or wi-fi network.
- teacher software master equipment
- it can also be used as independent equipment for example as additional teaching material to support the theory classes, since it incorporates an RGB video output that allows an external video device to be connected as a projector to visualize the execution of the exercises.
- the system connects to the internet to provide the best support to users in remote and real time.
- the internet connection has a double functionality: the first is the possibility of downloading updates for the system, and the second is the remote assistance with which the servers of the provider company can connect to any computer anywhere in the world (with permission of the acquirer or user of the device) to repair it remotely.
- the present invention makes use of a distributed application that supports several configurations, and which consists of several programs hosted on different computers all connected through two Ethernet networks.
- the first network is a local network in the facilities of the user of the device composed of student simulators, local server and teacher's computer.
- the second network is a network that connects the first with the server on the internet.
- the main network of the present invention is formed according to the local network of simulators of the purchaser or user of the device. It is made up of one or more student simulators, a central server and a computer with the teacher software (master-team) according to specific functions mentioned below:
- Student simulator it is the central nucleus of the invention with which the simulation and execution of the exercises assigned to each student is performed, as well as the on-screen visualization of the theory assigned by the teacher. Load your central server configuration and save the exercises performed on it.
- Central server this equipment stores all the configurations that the teacher designs for each student, and saves all the executions made by each student in his own personal file.
- Computer with teacher software or team-teacher: this team configures the central server managing information related to students, courses, exercises and theory. It also recovers the execution of exercises performed by each student to be evaluated.
- the above devices connected to each other play the network of the invention in its classroom configuration. It also supports an individual configuration where only one student and one computer with the software-teacher are necessary. In this individual configuration the role of the central server is performed by the student simulator itself.
- the second Ethernet network described above is the connection of the central server of the user of the device with the servers of its provider. This connection is made through the internet. Provider servers have all the necessary updates for each computer and remote assistance management.
- Updates are managed by the following procedure: the central user server of the device connects via internet to the provider's servers and replicates the updates.
- the student simulator When the student simulator is turned on, ask your central server if there are updates available for him and if so, he requests the user's permission to update, and if the user accepts the device, the device is automatically updated.
- the remote assistance is also managed from the servers of your provider through its connection via internet with the central servers of the different classrooms described.
- the technicians of the supplier company can access it remotely and make the necessary repairs, or if necessary replace the software to eliminate any possible programming error, always saving previously different configurations already created and the histories of student executions.
- Both the student simulator and the central server have been fully designed at the software level, starting from the Operating System to the final application on each computer.
- the operating system has been a very decisive element when designing the software since it was necessary to develop a highly configurable system with the ability to limit its functionality to minimize errors. Therefore, the system is completely based on Linux, which provides the opportunity to configure it according to the needs.
- the operating system consists only of what is necessary to start the simulator and the basic Linux commands, that is, the Xorg server to start graphical applications, the NFS server to share files between the designed software, the Drivers and the necessary commands to start in console mode.
- the basic Linux commands that is, the Xorg server to start graphical applications, the NFS server to share files between the designed software, the Drivers and the necessary commands to start in console mode.
- Augmented Reality is a complex technology composed of hardware and software elements as previously mentioned.
- the simulator device object of the invention can use two micro-cameras, which form a stereo vision system used to detect elements in space.
- This stereo system works like our eyes detecting both the different peripheral elements that make up the invention and that are not other than those necessary in a real welding (test tubes, torches, electrode or supply rod), as the actual work environment itself in the The application is found.
- markers are barcodes in two dimensions.
- the "Advanced device for welding simulation in training processes” makes use of a stereo vision system composed of two micro-cameras powered by USB or Firewire cables, and glasses with HDMI or VGA video input (digital or analog) to show both the reality and the additional information generated by computer. And also a set of welding specimens with markers, three types of welding torches with markers, input rod and electrode with LED type markers.
