Definitions

  • the invention is framed within the field of medicine, and more particularly within the field of neonatology.
  • the object of the invention is a newborn monitoring device designed to minimize false alarms that occur due to the child's own movements.
  • Neonatology is universal. An increasing percentage of newborns, especially premature infants, is controlled by non-invasive methods, such as pulse oximetry, which, under ideal conditions, continuously reports on the state of oxygen saturation and the newborn's heart rate, with limits selected in each case for alarms.

  • the present invention describes a new monitoring device that minimizes the false alarms of the pulse oximeter caused by the movements of the newborn.
  • This device combines the information of the pulse oximeter with the information received from load cells capable of detecting the movements of the neonate, so that the alarm will only jump when the pulse oximeter signal is lost and, simultaneously, no movements of the newborn are detected. This not only prevents false alarms due to the movements of the newborn, but also strengthens the reliability of the alarms that occur, since they will involve both an abnormal pulse oximeter signal and the immobility of the newborn.
  • the most basic version of the device of the invention comprises, in addition to the usual pulse oximeter suitable for the neonate, the following elements: a horizontal upper tray, at least one load cell and an alarm means. These elements are described in more detail below.

This action, which in a healthy baby should not have any consequences, as long as it is done with the appropriate measures, in the most critical cases it may be even more extreme of the condition, or the use advised against. Therefore, the device of the invention preferably further comprises a processing means adapted to translate the received signal from the load cells by weight. Abstract
