Description

Title: Lid for closing a box for distribution of items, such as mail.
The present invention relates to a lid for closing a box for distribution of items, such as mail, comprising a cover part having a polygonal, preferably square, shape corresponding to the shape of the cross-section of the mouth of the box and a flange extending from the cover part for abutment against the exterior sides of the box.
It is known to use lids for closing boxes for mail. Such lids are usually rigid and difficult to adapt to items that are slightly too big to fit into the box.
Moreover, a flexible lid for a box with a square cover part and a flange extending from the cover part is known from GB19141 1849 A. The object of the present invention is to provide a lid which is easy to handle and, at the same time, is flexible when used in connection with items protruding from the mouth of the box.
Throughout this description, the lid is described as a lid for closing a box. However, the lid may of course also be used for closing several smaller boxes joined together, the joint shape of which fits the lid.
The above-mentioned object is achieved by a lid which is essentially made of a flexible textile material and a flange which is divided into flaps corresponding to each edge of the cover part, the flaps being adapted to be placed against each their exterior side of the box during use, and the flaps being provided with strips having at least one fastening means for fastening the lid to the box.
Such a lid makes it possible for an item to protrude slightly from the edge of the box without impairing optimum use of the lid. For instance, one or more of the fastening strips may be left unfastened to allow the item to protrude above the lid. Alternatively, the use of several fastening means on each strip may enable the length of the strip between the lid and the fastening means to be adjusted to create room for that/those item/s that, due to their size or shape, cannot fit into the box.
According to the invention, the flaps may be substantially rectangular and zips are provided at the corners of the cover part, each zip being fastened to the two adjacent flap edges so as to connect these two flap edges with each other when closed. It is thus facilitated that the lid, when all zips are closed, adopts a tub- like shape that may be placed over the box. In this way, a particularly good protection of the contents of the box is secured.
Moreover, according to the invention, each of the flaps may have at least one slit provided with a zip, the slit extending from the free edge of the flap to the immediate vicinity of the cover part. It is thus obtained that each flap may be used with greater flexibility when items placed in the box only requires additional space in a limited area.
Particularly advantageously, the slits provided with zips and the strips for fastening the lid to the box may be positioned in the middle of each flap, each strip being fastened to the lid immediately next to an inner end of the zip as seen in the direction of the cover part. It is thus facilitated that the fastening strips may be fastened even though parts of the flaps cannot be closed by means of the zips.
According to the invention, each fastening means of each strip may consist of a transverse seam adapted to cooperate with a fastening device on the box. Each fastening means is thus formed by increasing the thickness of part of each strip, which part may easily be fastened to or retained in engagement with a box, when the box is provided with a slit to receive the strip. According to the invention, the strips may be made of an elastic material so as to be able to adapt to different positions of the cover part in relation to the top of the box. Finally, according to the invention, a protective flap may be fastened in connection with each zip so as to cover the slit between adjacent flap parts on the lid when the zip is open. Thereby the contents of the box are protected against rain etc. even if the zip cannot be closed. The invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the drawing, which shows a preferred embodiment of the invention and in which fig. 1 shows a lid according to the invention seen from above, fig. 2 shows the same lid seen from below, and fig. 3 schematically shows a section along the line A-A in fig. 2.
In figs. 1 and 2, the lid is shown placed in a completely flat position. In its centre is a rectangular area constituting a cover part 1 which, during use, may cover a rectangular mouth of a box (not shown). Four flaps 2-5 extend from the rectangular cover part 1 , each flap being rectangular and having a comparatively short end edge 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 1 1 and 12, 13, respectively, at each end. In addition, they each have a free longitudinal edge 14, 15, 16 and 17, respectively, extending parallel to each their side of the rectangular cover part 1 . The adjacent end edges 6-13 of the flaps 2-5 constitute four right-angled incisions at the corners of the lid. In each of these right-angled incisions, a zip 18, 19, 20 and 21 is mounted, the two connecting halves of each zip being mounted along the adjacent end edges 6-13.
In the middle of each flap 2-5, a slit has been made perpendicular to the free edges (not clearly shown). In connection with each slit, a zip 22, 23, 24 and 25 has been mounted enabling the slit to be opened and closed as needed. In the drawing, the zips 22-25 are shown in their closed position.
In connection with each zip 18-25, a protective flap 27-34 is fastened. As the protective flaps are fastened on the inside of the lid, only the protective flaps 27- 30 can be seen in fig. 1 , whereas all the protective flaps 27-34 can be seen in fig. 2.
In connection with each of the above-mentioned slits in the middle of the flaps 2-5, a fastening strip 35-38 is mounted on the bottom face of the corresponding protective flaps 31 -34, i.e. one for each slit. These fastening strips, a section of one of which is shown in fig. 3, are mounted to the lid at their inner end and have been adapted for use in connection with fastening the lid to a suitable box. As can be seen from fig. 3, each fastening strip 36 is provided with four seams 39, 40, 41 and 42 only the reference numbers of which are shown in connection with the fastening strip 36. These seams 39-42 increase the thickness of part of each fastening strip 35-38 in a transverse direction facilitating engagement with a corresponding outwardly open slit in a box. Thus, the lid may quickly and easily be mounted on a box.
In connection with each flap, the shown lid is provided with a hook-and-loop fastener 43-58, which may be used to reduce the length of the flaps as needed. Finally, a plastic pocket 59 is provided on the bottom face of the lid and another plastic pocket 60 on the top face of the lid.
When used in connection with a suitable box, all zips 18-25 are closed so that the lid adopts a tub-like shape that may be placed over the box, the flaps abutting its exterior sides. The lid is fastened to the box by means of the fastening strips 35-38. If one or more items cannot fit into the box, the lid may be adjusted to these by opening one or more of the zips as needed and, possibly, slackening the fastening strips by using other seams than those normally used. The lid is of course dimensioned to the box in question and it is made of a material suitable for the conditions in which it is to be used. Accordingly, the lid itself may be made of a textile material woven from polyethylene threads and coated with polyurethane. The protective flaps may be made of PVC. The fastening strips are made of an elastic material, making it possible to adjust their length as needed.
To increase the weight of the flaps 2-5, they may be folded along the free edges 14-17, creating a fold in which a weight means, such as a plastic thread, may be placed.
The invention has been described in the above with reference to a preferred embodiment. Several modifications are thus conceivable without departing from the idea of the invention. For instance, the fastening strips may be placed at different positions along the circumference of the lid and the seams increasing the thickness of the strips may be replaced with rings or other means enabling quick and easy fastening to a box.
