Definitions
- the present invention relates to containers for the packaging of powder products, in particular for infant nutrition such as powdered or granulated milk formula.
- the invention further relates to a package comprising the combination of a container and a quantity of product.
- Powdered material has been sold in various forms of package for many years.
- That package is described in US20080041861, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety.
- That package comprises a container with a lid assembly placed on the container and a sealing film that is fixed to the container wall.
- the lid assembly is of a type that has a circumferential rim for attachment to the container and a hinged lid which closes an opening defined by the rim.
- the seal is provided with a tear lip and a weakening line. By pulling the lip an opening can be obtained along the tear line, via which opening the contents can be removed from the container. After removing the film along the tear line, an edge of the film remains on the side walls of the container.
- a scoop is provided which may be stored in the lid. In order to provide easy access and facilitate use of the scoop, the opening to the container is relatively wide compared to a hand of a user and also to the depth of the container
- connection between the container and the rim must also be carefully formed in order to avoid openings at this junction.
- lid assemblies may not completely seal the contents in the container, such that during use the content is still in contact with the environment.
- the content can be affected by moisture or other fluids and for example by minute insects or other animals, that can enter the container through gaps between the rim and the container. This is particularly troublesome in certain climates where such animals may be prevalent. It is believed that in order to achieve adequate protection, any gap or opening to the interior of the container must be smaller than 70 microns. For a container with a large access opening, achieving such tolerances may be difficult.
- a package for a powdered material comprising a container for receiving the material, the container having a base and a peripheral wall with a top edge, a membrane being attached at the top edge of the peripheral wall for separating the powdered material in the container from the environment, a lid assembly comprises a circumferential rim for connection over the top edge of the peripheral wall of the container and defining a wide access opening, and a lid, hingedly attached to the rim for reclosing the access opening, whereby the lid assembly comprises a circumferential lip extending inwardly of the peripheral wall and downwardly into the container to beyond the top edge thereof, such that the membrane is stretched by the lip in order to form a seal between the lip and the peripheral wall, and wherein the membrane further comprises an opening region lying inwardly of the lip.
- the membrane By stretching the membrane by the lip, the membrane can act as a seal between the lip and the peripheral wall of the container. This seal can extend around the whole periphery of the container.
- the terms upper and lower are intended to denote the in-use orientations of relevant items, with the container being placed on its base. Inwardly and outwardly are intended to denote directions in the horizontal plane.
- the lip stretches the membrane downwardly e.g. in the direction of closure of the lid. The seal is then formed between a lower edge of the lip and the upper surface of the membrane.
- the lip may penetrate through the membrane and stretch it radially and circumferentially with respect to the opening region. In this case, the free edge of the membrane bounding the opening region engages with an exterior periphery of the lip.
- the lid is intended to reclose the access opening to prevent escape of product once the membrane has been opened after first use. It should also prevent ingress of moisture, dirt and other foreign objects. In particular the lid and rim should close sufficiently to prevent ingress of small insects and the like. A maximum opening of 70 microns in the closed state is generally considered sufficient to achieve this. It will be understood that by using the membrane as a seal between the lid and the peripheral wall, the connection between the container and the rim will also be closed to at least the same tolerance. It is also noted that although the package is described as being suitable for a powdered material product, it may also be used for other products, not limited to liquids, gels and pasty or viscous products.
- the container has a width dimension and a length dimension and at least the length dimension is greater than the depth dimension.
- a scoop is provided within the package and may be located above the membrane prior to use.
- the container has a generally square or rectangular outer profile with rounded corners.
- the access opening may also be generally of a similar shape but may be slightly more round or elliptical.
- the membrane may be attached at the top edge of the peripheral wall either by connection with an inner surface of the peripheral wall or by connection onto the top edge of the container. This choice will depend partly on the form of the container wall and the material of which it is formed, as will be discussed further below. A preferred connection between the container and the membrane is by heat sealing or welding.
- the rim is connected to the container by attachment to the membrane.
- the membrane may first be connected to the top edge of the container, after which the rim may be attached to the membrane by adhesive, welding, heat sealing or the like.
- Such an arrangement is convenient for containers having a top edge of the peripheral wall forming an annular surface, such as a flange extending outwardly or inwardly in a radial direction from the container, in particular for containers with peripheral walls comprising a thermoformed or blow moulded polymeric material.
- the container may also be a composite construction comprising an inner thin thermoformed or vacuum formed polymer container supported by a carton based sleeve.
- the rim is then connected to the membrane at an area of the membrane lying above the top edge of the peripheral wall.
- the rim is attached to the membrane at distinct areas along the circumference of the rim. Because the lip stretches the membrane to form a seal around its complete periphery, it is no longer necessary to attach the rim along the whole of its circumference to the membrane.
- the membrane and the rim are attached to each other only at distinct points along the circumference of the rim, for example at the four corners in case of a rectangular or square container.
- the membrane is rupturable or frangible and may comprise a weakened tear line defining the opening region, and a pull tab.
- the membrane may be opened without disrupting the connection between the membrane and the top edge or the connection between the membrane and the rim if such is present.
- a peripheral region of the membrane remains permanently connected at the top edge of the peripheral wall in order to provide the sealing function.
- the membrane will be at least slightly resilient in order to better perform the sealing function even when the central portion is removed. Nevertheless, resilience may also be provided by other elements, such as the peripheral wall or the lip.
- the lip itself may be formed of a resilient material, distinct to the rest of the lid assembly. Such a structure may be achieved by dual-moulding techniques or the like.
- the membrane is preferably formed as a multilayer laminate based on polyolefins such as polypropylene (PP) and/or polyethylene (PE), having a carrier layer of polyester, PP, polyamide (PA), or other polymer, and if necessary with a barrier layer against oxygen permeation, made of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) or thin coatings of aluminium oxide (AlOx), silicium oxide (SiOx), metalised aluminium or other material.
- PP polypropylene
- PE polyethylene
- PA polyamide
- EVOH ethylene vinyl alcohol
- AlOx aluminium oxide
- SiOx silicium oxide
- metalised aluminium or other material Alternatively a single layer material such as PP, high density polyethylene (HDPE), bi- axially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BoPET) or other suitable material can be used, depending on the nature of the content of the package.
- the rim and the lid are integrally formed together of polymeric material.
- a preferred material for the lid and rim is polyethylene (PE) although the skilled person will be familiar with various alternatives which could provide similar engineering properties.
- PE polyethylene
- the hinged connection may be formed as a living hinge.
- An alternative two piece construction may also be envisaged. It is also conceivable that a scoop is integrally formed with the lid construction and separated at first use.
- the lip which engages with the membrane to seal the container may be part of the lid or may be part of the rim.
- the lip comprises a downwardly extending portion of the rim, which preferably is located close to the innermost edge of the rim defining the access opening.
- the form of the lip which engages with the membrane may be chosen to achieve the desired sealing function and may e.g. be a sharp edge or a rounded surface.
- the lid or the rim are provided with tamper evident closure indication. This may be provided in the manner of a pull-tab that can be removed on first use. Additional child resistant closures may be provided as required in order to avoid accidental opening by an infant.
- the package comprises stacking provisions on the base of the container and complementary provisions on the lid or rim such that a number of like containers can be stacked on one another in a stable manner.
- Such provisions may comprise cams, grooves, protrusions, flanges and the like which serve to locate one container with respect to another, in particular by preventing relative lateral movement.
- the base of the container may be hollow having a downwardly extending peripheral flange.
- the invention also encompasses a package as described above including a quantity of powdered material sealed within the container, preferably a powdered nutritional product.
- powdered nutritional product can include powders, granules, pellets and the like and that nutritional product may be given its broadest possible meaning. Nevertheless, the invention is most specifically directed to baby or infant nutritional products such as milk formula.
- a method of manufacturing a package for a powdered material comprising providing a container for receiving the powdered material, the container having a base and a peripheral wall with a top edge; providing a circumferential rim, defining a wide access opening, and a lid, hingedly attached to the rim, for reclosing the access opening; filling the container with the powdered material; providing a membrane for separating the powdered material from the environment; attaching the membrane at the top edge of the container; and connecting the rim onto the top edge.
- the membrane is attached to the rim by means of an adhesive, preferably a cyanoacrylate based adhesive.
- an adhesive preferably a cyanoacrylate based adhesive.
- the peripheral wall of the container is formed by thermoforming or blow moulding. It is also possible that the membrane is connected to the rim with ultra sonic sealing or heat sealing.
- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a package according to a first embodiment of the present invention
- Figure 2 is a cross-section of the package of Figure 1;
- Figure 3 shows a cross-section of the package of Figure 1 after opening
- Figure 4 shows a perspective view of the package of Figure 1 prior to placing the lid assembly
- Figure 5 shows a package according to a second embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a package 1 according to a first
- the lid assembly 26 comprises a circumferential rim 3 and a lid 4 for reclosing the container 2 after opening.
- the lid 3 and the rim 4 are formed as a single piece of plastic by injection moulding and are connected to one another by a living hinge 28 along one mutual side.
- the container 2 has a depth dimension d, measured from its base 5 to a top edge 6 of its peripheral wall 7. It also has a width dimension w and a length dimension 1.
- the rim 3 forms an access opening 8 providing access to the interior of the container 2.
- a membrane 9 having a tear line 10, a pull-tab 11 and an opening region 21.
- a leveller 12 which can be used to level-off a scoop (not shown) during use.
- Figure 2 shows a partial cross-section through the package of Fig. 1 taken along line II-II.
- the peripheral wall 7 comprises blow-moulded polymeric material and the top edge 6 is in the form of an annular flange 14 extending inwardly from the peripheral wall 7.
- the membrane 9 extends across the annular flange 14 and is sealed thereto by an appropriate welding process.
- the membrane is a multilayer laminate of polypropylene (PP) with a barrier layer against oxygen permeation, made of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), and seals above the powdered contents 17, preventing moisture and foreign matter ingress prior to use.
- PP polypropylene
- EVOH ethylene vinyl alcohol
- rim 3 is provided with a lip 13 extending inwardly of the peripheral wall 7 and downwardly into the container 2 beyond the top edge 6.
- the rim 3 is attached to the membrane 9 by appropriate adhesive, in this case drops 16 of a cyanoacrylate based adhesive.
- the lip 13 engages with the membrane 9, which is resilient, to form a seal .
- the rim 3 has such dimensions as to accommodate the flange 14 of the top edge 6.
- the membrane 9 extends beyond the outer circumference of the flange 14, such that it is sandwiched between the outer part 19 of the rim 3 and the peripheral wall 7 of the container 2.
- the package 1 is opened by hinging back the lid 4 to reveal the access opening 8.
- the pulling tab 11 may then be grasped in order to rupture the membrane 9 along the line of weakness 10.
- the opening region 21 may then be removed, leaving a peripheral region 22 connected to the flange 14 and exposing the powdered material.
- a scoop (not shown) is used to perform dosing of the powdered material.
- the lid 4 is reclosed.
- Figure 3 shows a similar view to Figure 2, with the lid 4 closed and with the opening region 21 of the membrane 9 removed.
- the lip 13 engages the peripheral region 22 of the membrane 9 and deflects it downwards. This downward deflection of the membrane 9 creates a bias force against the lip 13 which ensures sufficient sealing contact to ensure that there is no gap along this joint. In this manner entry of moisture and other objects may be substantially prevented.
- the container has a depth d of 150 mm, a length 1 of 190 mm and a width w of 127 mm.
- the amount of milk powder contained in the container 2 is around 800 gram. It will be understood that these proportions are merely exemplary although in general the invention is primarily applicable to wide-mouth, low-profile packages.
- FIG. 4 shows a view of a second embodiment of the invention in a similar cross-sectional view to that of Fig. 3.
- the peripheral wall 7 comprises a thermo-formed polymeric material.

- rim 3 is provided with a lip 13 extending inwardly of the peripheral wall 7 and downwardly into the container 2 beyond the top edge 6.
- the membrane 9 is attached to flange 15 by appropriate heat-sealing.
- the rim 3 is then connected over the top edge 6 of the peripheral wall 7.
- the outer part 19 of rim 3 has a detent 24 at its lower side, which engages with the peripheral flange 15 to mechanically retain the rim 3 to the container 2.
- the lip 13 is caused to engage the membrane 9.
- the resilience of the membrane material allows it to stretch, thus forming a seal with the lip 13.
- the outer circumference of the membrane 9 coincides with the outer circumference of the peripheral flange 15, although this need not be the case.
- Figure 5 shows a perspective view of the container 2 of Fig. 2, prior to positioning of the lid assembly 26.
- the membrane 9 overlies the annular flange 14 and is heat sealed to it in this region.
- the tear line 10 delimits the peripheral region 22 which remains attached to the annular flange 14 once the central opening region 21 has been removed by pulling of the pull-tab 11.
- Four spots of instant cyanoacrylate adhesive 16 are applied at the corners 20 of the container overlying the annular flange 14.
- the lid assembly 26 can thereafter be applied and will be adhered firmly and instantly by the adhesive 16. Such a connection is relatively less
