Definitions

  • the present invention relates to containers for the packaging of powder products, in particular for infant nutrition such as powdered or granulated milk formula.
  • the invention further relates to a package comprising the combination of a container and a quantity of product.
  • Powdered material has been sold in various forms of package for many years.
  • That package is described in US20080041861, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety.
  • That package comprises a container with a lid assembly placed on the container and a sealing film that is fixed to the container wall.
  • the lid assembly is of a type that has a circumferential rim for attachment to the container and a hinged lid which closes an opening defined by the rim.
  • the seal is provided with a tear lip and a weakening line. By pulling the lip an opening can be obtained along the tear line, via which opening the contents can be removed from the container. After removing the film along the tear line, an edge of the film remains on the side walls of the container.
  • a scoop is provided which may be stored in the lid. In order to provide easy access and facilitate use of the scoop, the opening to the container is relatively wide compared to a hand of a user and also to the depth of the container
  • connection between the container and the rim must also be carefully formed in order to avoid openings at this junction.
  • lid assemblies may not completely seal the contents in the container, such that during use the content is still in contact with the environment.
  • the content can be affected by moisture or other fluids and for example by minute insects or other animals, that can enter the container through gaps between the rim and the container. This is particularly troublesome in certain climates where such animals may be prevalent. It is believed that in order to achieve adequate protection, any gap or opening to the interior of the container must be smaller than 70 microns. For a container with a large access opening, achieving such tolerances may be difficult.
  • a package for a powdered material comprising a container for receiving the material, the container having a base and a peripheral wall with a top edge, a membrane being attached at the top edge of the peripheral wall for separating the powdered material in the container from the environment, a lid assembly comprises a circumferential rim for connection over the top edge of the peripheral wall of the container and defining a wide access opening, and a lid, hingedly attached to the rim for reclosing the access opening, whereby the lid assembly comprises a circumferential lip extending inwardly of the peripheral wall and downwardly into the container to beyond the top edge thereof, such that the membrane is stretched by the lip in order to form a seal between the lip and the peripheral wall, and wherein the membrane further comprises an opening region lying inwardly of the lip.
  • the membrane By stretching the membrane by the lip, the membrane can act as a seal between the lip and the peripheral wall of the container. This seal can extend around the whole periphery of the container.
  • the terms upper and lower are intended to denote the in-use orientations of relevant items, with the container being placed on its base. Inwardly and outwardly are intended to denote directions in the horizontal plane.
  • the lip stretches the membrane downwardly e.g. in the direction of closure of the lid. The seal is then formed between a lower edge of the lip and the upper surface of the membrane.
  • the lip may penetrate through the membrane and stretch it radially and circumferentially with respect to the opening region. In this case, the free edge of the membrane bounding the opening region engages with an exterior periphery of the lip.
  • the lid is intended to reclose the access opening to prevent escape of product once the membrane has been opened after first use. It should also prevent ingress of moisture, dirt and other foreign objects. In particular the lid and rim should close sufficiently to prevent ingress of small insects and the like. A maximum opening of 70 microns in the closed state is generally considered sufficient to achieve this. It will be understood that by using the membrane as a seal between the lid and the peripheral wall, the connection between the container and the rim will also be closed to at least the same tolerance. It is also noted that although the package is described as being suitable for a powdered material product, it may also be used for other products, not limited to liquids, gels and pasty or viscous products.
  • the container has a width dimension and a length dimension and at least the length dimension is greater than the depth dimension.
  • a scoop is provided within the package and may be located above the membrane prior to use.
  • the container has a generally square or rectangular outer profile with rounded corners.
  • the access opening may also be generally of a similar shape but may be slightly more round or elliptical.
  • the membrane may be attached at the top edge of the peripheral wall either by connection with an inner surface of the peripheral wall or by connection onto the top edge of the container. This choice will depend partly on the form of the container wall and the material of which it is formed, as will be discussed further below. A preferred connection between the container and the membrane is by heat sealing or welding.
  • the rim is connected to the container by attachment to the membrane.
  • the membrane may first be connected to the top edge of the container, after which the rim may be attached to the membrane by adhesive, welding, heat sealing or the like.
  • Such an arrangement is convenient for containers having a top edge of the peripheral wall forming an annular surface, such as a flange extending outwardly or inwardly in a radial direction from the container, in particular for containers with peripheral walls comprising a thermoformed or blow moulded polymeric material.
  • the container may also be a composite construction comprising an inner thin thermoformed or vacuum formed polymer container supported by a carton based sleeve.
  • the rim is then connected to the membrane at an area of the membrane lying above the top edge of the peripheral wall.
  • the rim is attached to the membrane at distinct areas along the circumference of the rim. Because the lip stretches the membrane to form a seal around its complete periphery, it is no longer necessary to attach the rim along the whole of its circumference to the membrane.
  • the membrane and the rim are attached to each other only at distinct points along the circumference of the rim, for example at the four corners in case of a rectangular or square container.
  • the membrane is rupturable or frangible and may comprise a weakened tear line defining the opening region, and a pull tab.
  • the membrane may be opened without disrupting the connection between the membrane and the top edge or the connection between the membrane and the rim if such is present.
  • a peripheral region of the membrane remains permanently connected at the top edge of the peripheral wall in order to provide the sealing function.
  • the membrane will be at least slightly resilient in order to better perform the sealing function even when the central portion is removed. Nevertheless, resilience may also be provided by other elements, such as the peripheral wall or the lip.
  • the lip itself may be formed of a resilient material, distinct to the rest of the lid assembly. Such a structure may be achieved by dual-moulding techniques or the like.
  • the membrane is preferably formed as a multilayer laminate based on polyolefins such as polypropylene (PP) and/or polyethylene (PE), having a carrier layer of polyester, PP, polyamide (PA), or other polymer, and if necessary with a barrier layer against oxygen permeation, made of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) or thin coatings of aluminium oxide (AlOx), silicium oxide (SiOx), metalised aluminium or other material.
