Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for estimating an available bandwidth that is a free bandwidth of a communication line, and more particularly, to a method for controlling a range for searching for an available bandwidth.
- the usable bandwidth (also called usable bandwidth) of a communication line is a free bandwidth obtained by subtracting other traffic (hereinafter referred to as cross traffic) flowing in the network from the physical bandwidth of the bottleneck link of the communication line.
- cross traffic other traffic
- Estimating the current available bandwidth is important for video chat, videophone, videoconferencing, etc., where two-way video is transmitted between terminals.
- the sum of the video transmission rate and the cross traffic is prevented from exceeding the physical bandwidth of the bottleneck link of the communication line. As a result, packet loss is prevented and video quality is ensured.
- Non-Patent Document 1 a plurality of fixed-size measurement packets are transmitted from the transmission side terminal as one unit (hereinafter referred to as packet train) to the reception side terminal, and the reception side terminal changes the reception interval of each measurement packet.
- packet train a transmission side terminal as one unit
- the reception side terminal changes the reception interval of each measurement packet.
- the measurement packets are temporarily queued in devices such as routers and switches on the network. Therefore, in the receiving side terminal, the reception interval of the measurement packet increases with respect to the transmission interval in the transmitting side terminal.
- the available bandwidth is calculated. In other words, a location where the reception interval of the measurement packet starts to increase in comparison with the transmission interval at the transmission side terminal is detected at the reception side terminal, and the packet size of the measurement packet is divided by the transmission interval at that location. Bandwidth is calculated.
- Patent Document 1 a plurality of measurement packets whose packet sizes gradually increase are transmitted from the transmission side terminal to the reception side terminal as a packet train, and a change in the reception interval of each measurement packet is detected at the reception side terminal.
- a method for estimating the available bandwidth This method is characterized in that when a packet train is transmitted from a transmission side terminal, the measurement packets are transmitted at equal intervals. In this method, the transmission rate of measurement packets increases linearly within the packet train.
- the available bandwidth is calculated in the same manner as the calculation method proposed in Non-Patent Document 1.
- the available bandwidth is estimated by repeating the operation of transmitting a packet train including a measurement packet sequence having a fixed size and an equal transmission interval from the transmission side terminal to the reception side terminal a plurality of times.
- a method has been proposed.
- the receiving terminal when the reception interval tends to increase, a packet train in which the transmission interval is exponentially decreased is transmitted from the transmitting terminal to the receiving terminal, and the reception interval tends to decrease.
- the available bandwidth is estimated by performing a binary search by repeating the operation of transmitting a packet train whose transmission interval is exponentially increased from the transmitting terminal to the receiving terminal.
- JP 2011-142622 A Japanese Patent No. 4153510
- a problem of a general method for estimating an available bandwidth is to search for an available bandwidth in a wide range unnecessarily, even though the upper limit of the available bandwidth to be searched is lowered as described above. The reason for this is that a general method for estimating available bandwidth focuses on examining how much cross-traffic is present before the application of the terminal starts communication, and combining the application and available bandwidth estimation. This is because is not considered.
- Non-Patent Document 1 discloses selection of a communication path and a server having a plurality of candidates as an application of available bandwidth estimation.
- a communication path and a server that can use a wide band are specified by the available band estimation, and the communication path and server are used after the estimation process is completed.
- the estimated value continuously becomes the upper limit value or the lower limit value of the current available bandwidth search range. Therefore, it is determined that the cross-traffic communication rate is too low or too high for the current available bandwidth search range. Then, at the next packet train transmission, the search range of the usable bandwidth is corrected downward or upward by adjusting the transmission interval of the measurement packet.
- the level of the cross traffic communication rate is considered, but the level of the transmission rate of the application of the terminal itself is not considered.
- An object of the present invention is to prevent an unnecessary search of a wide range of usable bandwidth when an application with a high transmission rate such as video communication is used.
- the available bandwidth search range control method obtains the transmission rate of the application of its own terminal, determines the upper limit value of the search range of the available bandwidth of the communication line using the transmission rate, and uses the search range of the upper limit value or less.
- the available bandwidth is estimated.
- the own terminal and the partner terminal are connected to the network, and the own terminal uses the own terminal transmission rate acquisition unit that acquires the transmission rate of the application of the own terminal, and the transmission rate.
- a search range control unit that determines the upper limit value of the search range of the usable bandwidth of the communication line, and a measurement packet transmission unit that transmits a measurement packet to the partner terminal in a band equal to or less than the upper limit value.
- a measurement packet receiving unit for receiving and an available band estimation unit for estimating an available band based on the received measurement packet are provided.
- the present invention when an application with a high transmission rate such as video communication is used, it is possible to prevent a search for a wide range of usable bandwidths unnecessarily. As a result, it is possible to improve the estimation accuracy of the available bandwidth and reduce the communication load necessary for the estimation. This is because the search range of the usable bandwidth can be controlled in accordance with the transmission rate of an application such as video communication.
