Description

MULTILAYER SURFACE COVERING
Field of the invention
[ 0001 ] The present invention relates to a polymer-based composition and to a multilayer surface covering comprising a layer made of said composition.
Prior art and related technical background
[ 0002 ] Synthetic surface coverings, such as floor or wall coverings, are well known. Among them, multiple layer coverings usually comprise a lower layer known as "support layer", and an upper layer known as "wear layer". In opposition to other polymeric sheet materials, a floor or wall covering, and the different layers of a multiple layer covering has specific properties in terms of flexibility, mechanical and stain resistance.
[ 0003 ] The most known surface coverings are PVC-based coverings having at least one layer comprising PVC . Usually, to improve their wear resistance properties, such surface coverings comprise a top coating applied over the upper surface of the wear layer.
[ 0004 ] However, in some hard conditions of use, for example due to high traffic, wear, tears and scratches can appear over a part or all of the top surface of the surface covering, even on surface coverings comprising a top coating.
[ 0005 ] Generally, the damaged part of the surface covering cannot be repaired easily, sometimes it even requires the removal of the entire surface covering, which is an expansive solution.
[ 0006 ] For surface coverings comprising joint tiles, the replacement of the damaged part is easier but generally not done because of the unavoidable aesthetic differences between the tiles in place and new ones.
[0007] Therefore restoration solutions were proposed.
[0008] It is well known that it is possible to restore a surface covering, in particular a PVC-based surface covering, by applying a new top coating or by spray methods consisting in applying a wax or a polish solution and buffing the surface using a buffing pad by means of a rotating buffing machine.
[0009] Dry buffing is also a method of choice as it uses only a mildly abrasive dry buffing pad and no maintenance products, i.e. polish or top coating composition.
[0010] However, not all the surface coverings are able to be restored by dry buffing.
Aims of the invention
[0011] The present invention aims to provide a composition and a surface covering comprising a layer made of such composition which do not have the drawbacks of the prior art .
[0012] The present invention aims to provide a surface covering which is an alternative to traditional polymer-based surface coverings.
[0013] The invention aims to provide a surface covering being capable of being restored by a dry buffing method.
[0014] The invention aims to provide a surface covering having reduced or limited maintenance costs.

[0050] The polymer-based layer may be obtain from the polymer-based composition according to the invention in the form of a film, said film being calendered with a support layer 2 or a decorative layer 3.
[0051] The coating or calendaring of the polymer-based composition may be performed using any suitable coating or calendaring device.
[0052] The surface covering 1 may further comprises a top coating 5, or varnish layer, applied over the upper surface of the wear layer 4 (figure 1) . This varnish layer 5 has a thickness comprised between 5 and 20 μπι, more preferably around 10 μπι.
[0053] Preferably, the composition of the varnish layer
5 comprises curable polyurethane which is cured by UV or heat to form a top coating allowing to get the wear and stain resistance properties.
[0054] The surface covering 1 may further comprise a glass veil. The glass veil may either be embedded in the support layer 2 or being a supplementary layer in contact with the support layer 2.
[0055] The surface covering 1 according to the invention may comprised embossing.
[0056] The surface covering 1 according to the invention may be a wall or a floor covering.
[0057] The dry buffing performances of a comparative example, being a polymer-based multiple layers surface covering, and a surface covering according to the invention, were assessed.
[0058] The scratches are made using an abrasive pad (3M™
Black Stripper Pad 7200) fixed at a rotating handle device, rotating at 2500 rpm, under a weight of 2kg in one back and forth movement with a lateral speed displacement of 5 cm/s. The scratches are afterward cleaned with isopropanol. The restoration by dry buffing is then performed, under a weight of 4kg, using a 3M™ White Super Polish Pad 4100 fixed at a rotating handle device, rotating at 2500 rpm, in 30 back and forth movements with a lateral speed displacement of 5 cm/s.
[0059] The polymer-based surface covering 1 according to the invention comprises:
- a 1300 μπι thick support layer 2 comprising two calendered PVC-based films with a glass veil in between,
a 700 μπι thick transparent wear layer 4 having the composition EX 1 to 20.
[0060] The comparative polymer-based surface covering example is the same as the surface covering according to the invention with the exception that the wear layer comprises the composition CE1 for the calendaring embodiment and CE2 for the coating embodiment. [0061] The Dry buffing performances are given in tables
3 and 4.
Table 3: Dry buffing performances.
Figure imgf000011_0001
Table 4: Dry buffing performances.
Figure imgf000011_0002
[0062] The performances are ranked from "1" to "3", "1" meaning good, to "3" meaning very good.
[0063] The maintenance performance, i.e. ability of being restored, and the visual aspect after restoration by dry buffing of the surface coverings, show clearly that the surface covering 1 having a wear layer 4 having a polymer- based composition according to the invention presents an improved maintenance performance. [0064] As shown at figures 2 and 3, the restoration by dry buffing of the comparative example of surface covering CE2 is poor.
[0065] While, as shown at figures 4 and 5, the restoration by dry buffing of the surface covering according to the invention is clearly enhanced in comparison to CE2.
[0066] This difference is more marked for surface coverings comprising embossments. As shown in figure 7, the restoration of a surface covering according to the invention is enhanced in comparison to the restoration of a comparative surface covering (upper part of figure 6) where the embossing almost have disappeared.
