Abstract

Description
본 발명은 디스플레이 기술에 관한 것으로서, 더욱 상세하게는, 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치 및 이의 구동 방법에 관한 것이다.
액정 디스플레이 장치를 대체하기 위한 정보 디스플레이 장치로서, 전기 영동 방식(electrophoresis), 통전변색 방식(electro-chromic) 또는 이색 입자 회전 방식(dichroic particles rotary method)과 같은 기술을 이용한 디스플레이 장치가 제안되어 왔다. 이들 기술들은 종이와 같은 통상의 인쇄 매체에 근접한 넓은 시야각, 낮은 소비 전력 및 메모리 효과와 같은 이점들 때문에 액정 디스플레이 장치를 대체할 수 있는 차세대 디스플레이 장치로서 최근 활발히 연구되고 있다.
이들 디스플레이 장치들 중 전기 영동 방식의 디스플레이 장치는 2 개의 전극들 사이에 인가된 전기장에 의해 하전된 입자들이 이동하는 현상을 이용한 장치이다. 상기 입자들은 한 종류의 컬러를 갖거나, 2 종류 이상의 서로 컬러를 가질 수 있다.
하나의 서브 픽셀 내에 2 종류 이상의 컬러 입자를 사용하는 경우, 이들 입자들의 극성은 서로 반대인 것이 일반적이지만, 동일한 극성을 갖더라도 전기 영동 이동도의 차이에 의해 독립적으로 제어될 수 있다. 그러나, 서브 픽셀 내에 서로 독립적으로 제어되어야 할 입자들의 종류가 증가할수록 이를 제어하기 위한 전극 구조 및 구동 방법은 극도로 복잡해진다. 따라서, 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치에서 적은 종류의 입자만으로 다양한 컬러 표현력을 확보하는 것은 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치에 있어 필수적이다.

도 1a는 컬러를 나타내는 HSL RGB 컬러 공간 모형(CM, 이하에서는 컬러 공간 모형이라 함)이며, 도 1b는 종래의 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치에 의해 구현되는 제한된 HSL 컬러 공간 모형(LCM)이다.
일반적으로, 임의의 컬러는 컬러 공간 모형(CM)에서 색상(Hue, H), 채도(Saturation, S) 및 명도(lightness, L)로 정의될 수 있다. 컬러 공간 모형(CM)에서, 이들 H, S 및 L 값은 실린더 좌표 시스템으로 표시될 수 있다. 색상 값 H는 각도로 표현된다. 일반적으로, 가시광선 스펙트럼에서 파장이 가장 긴 적색(R)을 기준인 0 °로 정의하였을 때, 상대적인 배치 각도로 다른 컬러들이 정의될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 녹색(G)은 적색(R)을 기준으로 120 ° 회전한 위치에 존재하며, 청색(B)은 적색을 기준으로 240 °회전한 위치에 존재한다. 채도 값 S는 특정한 색상의 가장 진한 상태를 100 %로 하였을 때의 진하기 정도를 나타내며, 채도 값 0%에서는 같은 명도를 갖는 무채색, 즉 회색이 된다.
마지막으로, 명도 값 L는 흑색을 0으로, 그리고 백색을 1로 정하였을 때의 밝기 정도를 나타내며, 컬러 공간 모형(CM)에서, 적색(R), 녹색(G) 및 청색(B)의 명도는 0.5로 약속될 수 있다. 컬러 공간 모형(CM)에서, 모든 색의 명도 0은 오직 흑색이 되므로, 흑색(K)은 컬러 공간 모형(CM)의 아래 꼭지점을 정의된다. 마찬가지로, 명도 1은 백색(W)을 의미하기 때문에, 백색(W)은 컬러 공간 모형(CM)의 위 꼭지점을 정의한다. 컬러의 명도 L이 증가하거나 감소할수록 채도 값 S의 변화에 따른 컬러 변화가 크지 않기 때문에, 흑색(K)으로 갈수록, 그리고, 백색(W)으로 갈수록 채도 값 S의 폭이 줄어든다. 그 결과, 컬러 공간 모형(CM)은 도 1a에 도시된 바와 같이 이중 원뿔형으로 정의될 수 있다.
종래의 반사형 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치에서는, 컬러 구현을 위하여, 일반적으로, 서브 픽셀을 채우는 유체 내에 적색, 녹색 및 적색 입자들과 같은 컬러 입자를 분산시키는 것이 주로 제안되었다. 이러한 컬러 입자 시스템은, 필요에 따라, 상기 컬러 입자와 함께 흑색 입자들이 분산된 구성을 갖기도 한다.
상기 컬러 입자 시스템에 기반한 종래의 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치에서는, 상기 적색, 녹색 및 청색 입자들이 모두 디스플레이면측으로 이동되었을 때, 각각의 컬러 입자들이 입사광의 일부 파장 대역만을 반사시킬 수 있기 때문에, 가색 혼합법에 의해 나타나는 컬러는 일반적으로 백색이 아니고, 회색이 된다. 이는, 종래의 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치의 경우, 도 1b에 도시된 바와 같이, 최대 1 보다 작은 명도값을 갖는 제한된 컬러 공간 모형(LCM) 내에서만 컬러가 구현될 수 있음을 의미한다.
이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 종래의 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치에서는, 백색을 구현하기 위하여, 별도의 백색 서브 픽셀을 마련하는 것이 일반적이다. 이러한 추가적인 서브 픽셀은, 제한된 화면 면적을 점유하기 때문에, 정하여진 화면 면적에 대한 해상도를 감소시키는 요인이 되기 때문에 바람직하지 못하다.
멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치의 색 재현력에 대한 요구가 증가함에 따라, 도 1a와 같은 컬러 공간 모형(CM)을 실질적으로 표현할 수 있는 전기 영동 아키텍쳐를 실현하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 하기의 실시예들은, 하나의 서브 픽셀 내에서 또는 인접하는 서브 픽셀에 의해 구현되는 컬러의 명도 값을 실질적으로 0에서 1까지 조절 가능하여, 도 1a의 이상적인 컬러 모형(CM)에 근접하거나 만족하는 색 재현력을 얻을 수 있다.
본 명세서에서, '명도' 또는 '밝기'라는 용어는, 상호 호환적으로 사용될 것이다. 이들은 공지의 변환 관계를 통하여 등가적인 의미를 갖는다.
도 2a 내지 도 2d는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치(100)의 구조 및 명도 조절 메커니즘을 개략적으로 도시하는 단면도이다.
도 2a 내지 도 2d를 참조하면, 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치(100)는 제 1 기판(10; 본 도면에서는 상부 기판)과 제 1 기판(10)에 대향하는 제 2 기판(20; 본 도면에서는 하부 기판)을 포함한다. 상부 기판(10)과 하부 기판(20) 중 어느 하나 또는 이들 모두는 투명 기판일 수 있다. 선택적으로는, 기판들(10, 20)은 수지계 재료로 형성되어 경량의 가요성을 가질 수도 있다. 도시된 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치(100)의 상부 기판(10)은 투명할 수 있으며, 관측자(1)가 디스플레이된 정보를 볼 수 있는 디스플레이면(VP)을 제공할 수 있다.
하부 기판(20)은 공지의 구동 부재(미도시), 예를 들면, 복수의 행들 × 복수의 열들로 이루어진 데이터 라인들과 게이트 라인들, 상기 라인들이 교차되는 영역에 배치되는 복수의 MOS 트랜지스터들을 포함하는 액티브 매트릭스층을 포함할 수 있다. 그러나, 상기 액티브 매트릭스는 예시적이며, 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치(100)의 구동 부재는, 수동 매트릭스 방식의 배선 및 구동 소자, 또는 정적 구동을 위한 세그먼트 방식의 배선 및 구동 소자일 수도 있다. 필요에 따라, 상부 기판(10)에도, 후술하는 상부 전극을 구동하기 위한 구동 부재를 포함할 수 있다.

캐비티들(V)을 정의하는 분리 부재는, 도시된 격벽 구조(30) 이외에, 예를 들면, 공지의 마이크로 캡슐 또는 마이크로 컵 구조를 가질 수도 있다. 이들 격벽들 및 캡슐들은, 예를 들면, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리스틸렌, 폴리카보네이트, 에폭시계 수지, 실리콘계 수지, 멜라민계 수지, 아크릴계 수지, 페놀계 수지와 같은 다양한 고분자 재료를 이용하여 형성될 수 있으며, 실크스크린, 엠보싱 공정, 포토리소그래피, 자외선 조사, 레이저 드릴링 및 에멀젼화 공정과 같은 공정을 통하여 제공될 수 있다.
캐비티(V)에는 각 픽셀에 대응하는 컬러를 갖는 컬러 유체(CU1, CU2, CU3)가 충전된다. 유체(CU1, CU2, CU3)의 컬러는, 도 1a의 컬러 공간 모형(CM)에 대응하는 삼원색인 적색(R), 녹색(G) 및 청색(B)을 가질 수 있다. 다른 실시예에서, 유체(CU1, CU2, CU3)의 컬러는, 시안색, 마젠타색 및 황색일 수도 있다. 그러나, 이러한 유체의 컬러는 예시적이면 본 발명이 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
컬러 유체(CU1, CU2, CU3)는 단일하거나 혼합된 유전성 용매이다. 컬러 유체(CU1, CU2, CU3)는 이들 유체에 분산된 입자들(WP, KP)의 이동도를 높이기 위하여 낮은 점성을 가지며, 약 2 내지 30, 바람직하게는, 2 내지 15 사이의 유전 상수를 가질 수 있다. 상기 유전성 용매들은 디카하이드로나프탈렌(decahydronaphtahlene: DECALIN), 5-에틸리덴-2-노보덴(5-ethylidene-2-norbornene), 지방성 오일들, 파라핀 오일과 같은 탄화수소와 톨루엔, 크셀렌, 페닐실릴에탄, 벤젠 또는 알킬나프탈렌과 같은 방향족 탄화수수들과, 퍼플루오로디칼린(perfluorodecalin), 퍼플루오로톨루엔(perflurotoluene), 퍼플루오로크실렌(perfluoroxylene)일 수 있으며, 이들은 예시적일 뿐 본 발명이 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
유체(CU1, CU2, CU3)는, 염료에 의해서 착색될 수 있다. 상기 염료는, 이들 유체에 친화성 또는 반응성이 있는 공지의 염료 재료이다. 예를 들면, 비이온성 아조(nonionic azo) 또는 안드라퀴논 계열의 염료들이 유용하다. 그러나, 이것은 예시적이며, 상기 염료는 상용의 산성 염료(acid dyes), 유용성 염료(oil-soluble dyes), 분산 염료(disperse dyes), 반응성 염료(reactive dyes), 직접 염료(direct dyes) 또는 이들의 혼합 조성물일 수 있다. 유체(CU1, CU2, CU3) 내에는 상기 염료 외에도 전하 조절제(charge-controlling agent), 양이온성 또는 음이온성 계면 활성제, 금속 비누, 수지 재료, 금속계 결합제(coupling agent) 및 안정화제(stabilizing agent)와 같은 다양한 기능성 물질들이 더 첨가될 수 있다.
유체(CU1, CU2, CU3)를 착색시키는 상기 염료들은, 종래에 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치에서 일반적으로 사용되는 컬러 안료와 구별된다. 종래의 컬러 안료는 유기 또는 무기성 입자이며, 통상적으로 하전되거나 전기적으로 중성이다. 상기 컬러 안료는 일반적으로 유체 내에 녹지 않고 분산되는 점에서 거동 측면에서 상기 염료와 구별된다.
본 실시예에서, 컬러 유체(CU1, CU2, CU3)는 상기 컬러 안료가 아니라, 염료에 의해 착색되는 점에서 종래의 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치와 구별된다. 종래에는 컬러 유체를 구현하기 위해 하전되지 않은 컬러 안료 입자를 사용하였다. 그러나, 하전되지 않는 컬러 안료 입자를 사용하는 경우, 상기 안료 입자의 분산 상태가 제어될 수 없다. 그 결과, 사용에 따라 상기 컬러 안료 입자의 분산 상태가 변하게 되고, 그에 따라 시간이 경과할수록 컬러 유체의 컬러가 점차 열화되고, 결국에는 정확한 컬러 표시가 불가능해진다.
*그러나, 본 발명의 실시예에 같이, 염료에 의해 착색된 컬러 유체를 사용하면, 유체 내의 전기 영동 입자들이 유동하더라도, 유체의 컬러의 경시적 변화는 없으며, 서브 픽셀 내에 분산된 하전 입자들의 구동을 위한 설계 조건을 협소화되지 않는다. 이러한 본 발명의 이점은 하기의 명도 조절 메커니즘으로부터 더욱 분명해질 것이다.
각 서브 픽셀에 대응하는 컬러를 갖는 컬러 유체(CU1, CU2, CU3) 내에는, 공통적으로 서로 전기 영동 이동도가 다른 전기 영동 입자인 백색 입자들(WP) 및 흑색 입자들(KP)이 분산된다. 백색 입자들(WP) 및 흑색 입자들(KP)은 서로 극성이 다르거나, 동일 극성이라도 하전량이 달라 서로 구별되는 전기 영동 이동도를 가질 수도 있다.
본 실시예는, 이와 같이, 바람직하게도 2 입자 시스템이다. 백색 입자들(WP) 및 흑색 입자들(KP)은 안료 및 수지 또는 이들 중 2 이상의 조합에 의해 형성될 수 있다. 백색 입자용 안료는, 예를 들면, 타이타늄 산화물(titanium oxide), 안티몬 산화물(antimony trioxide), 아연 황화물(zinc sulfide), 아연 산화물(zinc oxide), 바륨 황화물(barium sulfate), 바륨 티탄 산화물(barium titania), 카올린(kaolun), 실리콘 산화물(silica), 산화 칼슘(calcium oxide), 탄산칼슘(CaCO3), 또는 이들의 혼합 조성물일 수 있다. 흑색 입자용 안료는, 예를 들면, 카본 블랙(carbon black), 산화 구리, 이산화망간, 아닐린 블랙, 활성탄, 네오 슈퍼 블랙, 수단 블랙(sudan black), 또는 이들의 혼합 조성물일 수 있다.
입자들(WP, KP)에 적용될 수 있는 상기 수지는 우레탄 수지(urethane resin), 요소 수지(urea resin), 아크릴 수지(acrylic resin), 폴리에스테르 수지(polyester resin), 아크릴 우레탄 수지(acryl urethane resin), 아크릴 우레탄 실리콘 수지(acryl urethane silicone resin), 아크릴 우레탄 불화탄소 중합체(acryl urethane fluoro-carbon polymers), 아크릴 불화탄소 중합체(acryl fluorocarbon polymers), 실리콘 수지(silicone resin), 아크릴 실리콘 수지(acryl silicone resin), 폴리스티렌 수지(polystyrene resin), 스틸렌 아크릴 수지(styrene acrylic resin), 폴리오레핀 수지(polyolefin resin), 부틸알 수지(butyral resin), 비닐이딘 염화 수지(vinylidene chloride resin), 멜라민 수지(melamine resin), 페놀 수지(phenolic resin), 불화탄소 중합체(fluorocarbon polymers), 폴리카보네이트 수지(polycarbonate resin), 폴리술폰 수지(polysulfon resin), 폴리에테르 수지(polyether resin), 폴리에틸렌 수지(polyethylene resin) 및 폴리이미드 수지(polyamide resin)와 같은 중합체 수지 재료일 수 있으며, 이들 재료는 2 이상의 재료를 조합하여 사용될 수도 있다. 그러나, 이는 예시적이며, 본 발명이 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들면, 상기 수지는, 젤라틴(geratin), 알긴산(alginic acid), 라텍스(latex) 중합체, 폴리스티렌, 폴리비닐 포르말, 폴리비닐 부티랄, 폴리 메틸 아크릴 레이트, 폴리부틸 아크릴레이트, 폴리 메틸 메타크릴레이트, 폴리부틸 메타크릴레이트과 같은 다른 고분자 재료로 형성될 수도 있다.
상기 수지는 고유의 전하를 가질 수 있지만, 일부 실시예에서는, 이들 입자들(WP, KP)의 극성 및 하전량을 적극적으로 제어하기 위해, 상기 수지 내에 또는 수지 표면 상에 적합한 전하조절제(charge control agent; CCA)를 분산시키거나 결합시킬 수도 있다. 예를 들면, + 극성을 갖는 백색 입자들(WP)을 제조하기 위해 수지로서 음이온성 폴리에스테르를 사용하고, Bontron P5(Orient사로부터 입수 가능함)과 같은 전하 조절제를 추가적으로 첨가하여 + 하전량을 조절할 수 있다. 또한, - 극성을 갖는 흑색 입자들(KP)을 제조하기 위해서, 수지로서 음이온성 폴리에스테르를 사용하고, Bontron E8(Orient사로부터 입수 가능함)을 첨가하여, - 하전량을 조절할 수 있다.
상부 기판(10)과 하부 기판(20) 상에는, 서브 픽셀들(PX1, PX2, PX3) 내에 분산된 전기 영동 입자들(WP, KP)의 분산 상태를 제어하기 위한 복수의 전극들(CE, RE, DE)을 포함할 수 있다. 도시된 전극들(CE, RE, DE) 중 제 1 전극(CE)은 디스플레이면(VP) 상에 배치되며, 상부 전극이라고 지칭될 수도 있다. 제 1 전극(CE)은, 인듐-주석-산화물(Indium-Tin-Oxide; ITO), 불화 주석 산화물(Fluorinated tin Oxide; FTO), 인듐 산화물(indium oxide; IO) 및 주석 산화물(tin oxide; SnO2)과 같은 투명 전극이다. 제 1 전극(CE)은 도시된 바와 같이, 공통 전극일 수도 있으며, 도 3의 전극(TE)과 같이 구동 부재에 연결되어 독립적인 어드레싱이 가능한 개별 전극일 수도 있다.
상기 복수의 전극들은 제 1 전극(CE)에 대향하도록 제 2 기판(20) 상에 배치되는 제 2 전극(DE), 및 제 2 기판(20) 상에서 제 2 전극(DE)으로부터 이격 배치되어 후술하는 입자들(WP. KP) 중 적어도 한 종류의 입자들을 수집하기 위한 제 3 전극(RE)을 포함한다. 제 1 전극(CE)에 대향하는 제 2 전극(DE)은 전술한 액티브 매트릭스층의 트랜지스터와 같은 스위칭 소자에 연결되어 독립적인 어드레싱이 가능한 개별 전극일 수 있다. 제 1 전극(CE)과 제 2 전극(DE)은 서로 대향하여, 기판들(10, 20)의 주면에 수직하는 전계를 발생시킬 수 있다. 일부 실시예에서, 제 2 전극(DE)은 반사형 디스플레이 장치를 구현하기 위해 반사성 표면을 제공할 수도 있다.

적색 및 청색 서브 픽셀들(PX1, PX3)의 제 3 전극(RE)의 전위는 인접하는 제 2 전극(DE)과 동일한 극성의 전압이 인가되거나 0 V 일 수 있다. 도 2b에 도시된 입자 분포는, 적색 및 청색 서브 픽셀(PX1, PX3)의 제 2 전극(DE)에, 예를 들면 - 0V의 전압을 인가함으로써 얻어질 수 있다.
도 2a의 입자 분포 상태에서 얻어지는 기준 명도 값을 갖는 녹색보다 더 증가된 명도 값을 갖도록 도 2c에 도시된 바와 같은 입자 분포를 유도할 수 있다. 도 2c의 각 픽셀들(PX1, PX2, PX3)의 광학 상태는 각각 백색, 명도가 증가된 녹색, 백색일 수 있다. 도 2a의 입자 분포 상태를 G라 정의했을 때, 도 2c의 컬러는 도 1a의 컬러 공간 모형(CM)에서 선 GW 상에 위치할 것이다. 적색 및 청색 서브 픽셀(PX1, PX3)의 입자 분포는, 도 2a의 해당 서브 픽셀에서의 전위와 동일한 전위를 구동 전극들(DE, RE)에 인가함으로써 달성될 수 있다.
녹색 서브 픽셀(PX2)에서는, 백색 입자들(WP)이 저면으로부터 디스플레이면(VP)측으로 소정 거리만큼 이동하며, 그에 따라, 백색 입자들(WP)이 디스플레이면(VP)을 통하여 더 잘 보일 수 있다. 즉, 디스플레이면(VP)을 통하여 보이는, 흑색 입자들(KP)에 대한 백색 입자들(WP)의 상대적 비율이 더 크다.
디스플레이면(VP)으로부터 백색 입자들(WP)의 거리(L1)가 감소될수록 녹색 서브 픽셀(PX2)의 명도는 증가하게 되며, 전체 픽셀(PX)에 의해 구현되는 녹색 컬러의 명도는, 도 2a에서 설명한 기준 값의 녹색 G 보다 더 큰 값을 갖게 될 것이다. 더욱 상세하게는, 거리 L1이 감소됨에 따라, 관측자(1)에 의해 관찰되는 픽셀(PX)의 컬러는, 도 1a에 도시된 컬러 공간 모형의 선 GW를 따라 점차 W 쪽으로 이동할 것이다.
백색 입자들(WP)이 디스플레이면측에 완전히 도달하면, 관찰되는 픽셀(PX)의 컬러는 도 1a의 컬러 공간 모형의 백색 꼭지점(W)으로 정의된 백색이 될 것이다. 이 때 얻어지는 백색은 종래의 컬러 입자 시스템의 적색, 녹색 및 청색 입자들의 가색 혼합에 의해 얻어지는 백색(실제로는 회색임)보다 명도가 더 크다. 즉, 본 발명의 실시예에 따르면, 별도의 백색 픽셀이 없이도, 컬러 서브 픽셀들(PX1, PX2, PX3)의 명도 조절 메커니즘에 의해 실질적인 백색(리얼 화이트)의 구현이 가능하다.
녹색 서브 픽셀(PX2) 내에서, 백색 입자들(WP)의 거동은, 구동 전극들(DE, RE)에 인가되는 전압 펄스의 높이 및 폭(지속 시간)의 변화를 통해 달성될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 제 2 전극(DE)에 + 10 V의 크기를 갖는 펄스를 백색 입자들(WP)의 스위칭 시간, 즉, 백색 입자들(WP)이 제 2 전극(DE)으로부터 제1 전극(CE)까지 도달하는데 소요되는 시간 내에서, 상기 전압 펄스의 폭을 증감시킴으로써 디스플레이면(VP)으로부터의 백색 입자들(WP)의 거리(L1)가 제어될 수 있다.
일부 실시예에서, 상기 명도 조절 단계는 도 2a의 녹색 서브 픽셀(PX2)의 입자 분포를 갖도록 하는 리셋 단계를 수행한 이후에 수행될 수 있다. 이 경우, 흑색 입자들(KP)은 상기 명도 조절 단계 동안 구동 전극(DE) 상에 유지될 것이다.

녹색 서브 픽셀(PX2)에서는, 흑색 입자들(KP)이 캐비티(V)의 저면으로부터 디스플레이면측(VP)으로 소정 거리만큼 이동하며, 그에 따라, 흑색 입자들(KP)이 디스플레이면(VP)을 통하여 관측자(1)에게 더 잘 보이게 된다. 즉, 디스플레이면을 통하여 보이는, 상기 백색 입자들(WP)에 대한 흑색 입자들(WP)의 비율이 증가된다.
디스플레이면(VP)으로부터 흑색 입자들(KP)의 거리(L2)가 감소될수록, 녹색 서브 픽셀(PX2)의 명도는 감소하게 되며, 전체 픽셀(PX)에 의해 구현되는 녹색 컬러의 명도는, 도 2a에서 설명한 기준 값의 명도를 갖는 녹색 G보다 더 작은 명도 값을 갖게 될 것이다.
거리 L2가 감소됨에 따라, 관측자(1)에 의해 관찰되는 픽셀(PX)의 컬러는 도 1a에 도시된 컬러 공간 모형(CM)의 선 GK를 따라 점차 흑색 꼭지점 K 쪽으로 이동할 것이다. 제 1 구동 전극(DE)에 -10 V의 크기를 갖는 펄스를 흑색 입자들(WP)의 스위칭 시간 이상 동안 인가하면, 흑색 입자들(KP)은 완전히 디스플레이면 상에 도달할 수 있으며, 마침내, 픽셀(PX)는 컬러 공간 모형(CM)의 흑색 꼭지점(K)에 해당하는 흑색을 표시하게 된다.
일부 실시예에서, 도 2a의 녹색 서브 픽셀(PX2)의 입자 분포와 같이, 캐비티 내의 입자들이 모두 저면에 수집되어 유체의 광학 상태가 관측자(1)에게 최대의 영향력을 미치는 상태를 리셋 상태로 정의할 수 있으며, 각 서브 픽셀의 기준 명도값이 될 수 있다. 또한, 전술한 명도 조절은 상기 리셋 단계를 수행한 후에 수행될 수도 있다.
전술한 실시예에서, 제 1 전극(CE)과 제 2 및 제 3 전극들(DE, RE) 중 하나의 전극(DE)이 입자들의 기판에 대한 수직 유동을 제어하여, 디스플레이면(VP)으로부터의 입자들(WP, KP)의 상대적 거리(L1, L2)를 제어할 수 있으며, 제 3 전극(RE)은 리셋을 위한 전극으로서 입자들(WP, KP)을 해당 서브 픽셀의 저면 측에 수집시키는 데에 이용될 수 있다. 이 경우, 제 3 전극(RE)은 TFT와 같은 스위칭 소자의 구동 전압에 제약없이 개별 전극인 제 2 전극(DE)보다 더 큰 크기를 갖는 반대 극성의 전압을 인가될 수 있으며, 그 결과 입자들의 상기 리셋 상태는 신속히 달성할 수 있다. 모든 컬러 서브 픽셀들이 리셋되면, 관측자(1)에게는 회색으로 보일 것이다. 이 리셋 단계 이후에, 명도 조절 단계에서, 명도 조절에 관여하지 않는 다른 종류의 입자들은 상기 명도 조절 동안 리셋 전극(RE) 상에 수집된 상태로 유지될 수도 있다.
전술한 실시예들에서는, 녹색 서브 픽셀(PX2)에 대하여 설명하고 있지만, 다른 서브 픽셀들(PX1, PX3)의 명도 조절도 동일하게 수행될 수 있음을 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 각 서브 픽셀 내에서, 디스플레이면(VP)으로부터 백색 입자들(WP)과 흑색 입자들(KP)의 거리(L1, L2)가 독립적으로 제어되면, 각 서브 픽셀들마다 명도가 제어된 광학 상태를 얻을 수 있으며, 각 서브 픽셀들(PX1, PX2, PX3)의 광학 상태가 조합되어 픽셀(PX)은 다양한 컬러들이 구현될 수 있다. 이와 같이 얻어지는 컬러는, 도 1a의 컬러 공간 모형에서 기준 명도 값보다 높은 쪽, 즉, 상부 원뿔 부분에 속하는 명도 값과 기준 명도 값보다 낮은 쪽, 즉 하부 원뿔 부분에 속하는 명도 값을 모두 표현할 수 있다. 그 결과, 본 발명의 실시예들에 따른 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치는, 컬러 공간 모형(CM)에 이상적으로 또는 실질적으로 근접하는 컬러 재현력을 제공할 수 있다.
도 3은 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치(200)의 구조 및 명도 조절 메커니즘을 개략적으로 도시하는 단면도이다.
도 3을 참조하면, 디스플레이 장치(200)는 전술한 디스플레이 장치(100)와 유사하게 제 1 전극(TE)을 포함한다. 제 1 전극(TE)은 구동 부재들에 의해 개별적으로 어드레싱이 가능한 개별 전극일 수 있다. 그러나, 이는 예시적이며, 제 1 전극(TE)은 공통 전극일 수도 있다. 또한, 디스플레이 장치(200)는, 제 1 전극(TE)과 대향하는 제 2 전극(DE)과 입자 수집을 위한 제 3 전극(RE)을 포함한다. 도시하지는 않았지만, 제 3 전극(RE)은 중앙에 제 2 전극(DE)을 두고 이를 둘러싸는 구성을 가질 수도 있다.
디스플레이 장치(100)는 블랙 매트릭스(BM)를 더 포함할 수 있다. 블랙 매트릭스(BM)는 차광성이 우수한 크롬과 같은 금속, 또는 염료 및/또는 안료를 포함하는 폴리에틸렌, 폴리스텔렌과 같은 고분자 수지 재료로 형성될 수 있다. 바람직하게는, 블랙 매트릭스(BM)는 포토리소그래피 공정이 가능한 감광성 수지 조성물일 수도 있다. 그러나, 이들 재료들은 예시적이며, 본 발명이 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들면, 블랙 매트릭스(BM)는 금속 산화물 및 세라믹과 같은 무기 재료로 형성될 수도 있다.

디스플레이 장치(200)의 구동 방법을 설명하기 위하여, 백색 전기 영동 입자(WP)는 + 극성을 가지며, 흑색 전기 영동 입자(KP)는 - 극성을 가지고, 상부 전극(TE)은 접지되어 있다고 가정한다.
제 1 서브 픽셀(PX1)에서, 제 2 전극(DE) 또는 이와 함께 제 3 전극(RE)에 + 10 V가 인가되면, 백색 입자들(WP)은 제 1 전극(VP) 상에 분산되고, 흑색 입자들(KP)은 제 2 전극(DE) 또는 제 3 전극(RE) 상에 분산될 것이다. 제 1 서브 픽셀(PX1)의 광학 상태는 백색이다.
제 2 서브 픽셀(PX2)에서는, 제 2 전극(DE)에 - 10 V가 인가되고, 제 3 전극(RE)에 + 10 V가 인가될 수 있다. 제 1 전극(TE)을 제외한 이들 전극들(RE, DE) 사이에 강한 전계가 발생하여, 흑색 입자들(KP)은 제 3 전극(RE) 상에 수집되고, 백색 입자들(DE)은 제 3 전극(RE)과 근접한 제 2 전극(DE)의 일부 상에 수집된다. 이와 같이 수집된 입자들은 모두 블랙 매트릭스(BM)에 가려져 관측자(10)에게는 컬러 유체(CU2)의 광학 상태에 의한 반사광만이 전달될 것이다. 이러한 상태를 해당 서브 픽셀의 기준 명도값으로 정의할 수 있음은 전술한 바와 같다. 또한, 서로 대향하고 있는 제 1 전극(TE)과 제 2 전극(DE) 사이의 전계를 조절하기 위하여, 이들 전극에 인가되는 전압의 펄스 폭을 제어함으로써 명도 조절을 할 수 있음은 전술한 바와 같다.
제 3 서브 픽셀(PX3)의 경우, 제 2 전극(DE)과 제 3 전극9RE)에 인가되는 전압을 제 1 서브 픽셀(PX1)의 경우와 반대로 함으로써 도시된 입자들의 분포 상태를 얻을 수 있으며, 이 경우, 광학 상태는 흑색이다.
도 4는 본 발명의 또 다른 실시예에 따른 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치(300)의 구조 및 명도 조절 메커니즘을 개략적으로 도시하는 단면도이다.
도 4를 참조하면, 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치(300)는 전술한 디스플레이 장치(200)와 유사하게, 제 1 전극(TE), 제 2 전극(DE) 및 제 3 전극(RE1)을 갖는다. 다만, 제 2 전극(DE)은 블랙 매트릭스(BM)와 중첩되지 않고, 제 3 전극(RE1)으로부터 멀리 이격된다. 또한, 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치(300)는 제 2 전극(DE)과 제 3 전극(RE1) 사이에 제 4 전극(RE2)을 더 포함할 수 있다. 제 4 전극(RE2)은 제 3 전극(RE1)과 유사하게 입자를 수집하거나, 제 2 전극(RE1)과 제 3 전극(RE2) 사이의 전기장의 세기를 감소시키는 역할을 한다.
디스플레이 장치(300)의 구동 방법을 설명하기 위하여, 백색 전기 영동 입자(WP)는 + 극성을 가지며, 흑색 전기 영동 입자(KP)는 - 극성을 가지고, 상부 전극(TE)은 접지되어 있다고 가정한다.

본 발명의 실시예에 따르면, 컬러와 흑백의 2 입자 시스템만으로 구동이 단순하면서도, HSL 컬러 공간 모형에서 흑색부터 백색까지의 명도 조절이 자유로운 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치가 제공될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 실시예에 따르면, 기준 명도값을 정의한 후, 표시되어야 할 컬러의 명도 정보에 따라, 디스플레이면을 통하여 보이는 백색 또는 흑색 전기 영동 입자들의 상대적 비율을 조절하여 HSL 컬러 공간 모형에서 흑색부터 백색까지의 명도 조절이 자유로운 영동 디스플레이 장치의 구동 방법이 제공될 수 있다.

- 디스플레이면을 제공하는 제 1 기판 및 상기 제 1 기판에 대향하는 제 2 기판; 상기 제 1 및 제 2 기판들 사이에 형성된 복수의 캐비티들; 상기 캐비티들 중 컬러 서브 픽셀을 구성하는 캐비티에 충전되는 컬러 유체; 상기 컬러 유체 내에 분산된 백색 전기 영동 입자들 및 상기 백색 전기 영동 입자들과 다른 전기 영동 이동도를 갖는 흑색 전기 영동 입자들을 포함하는 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치의 구동 방법으로서,컬러 서브 픽셀이 갖는 컬러의 기준 명도 값을 정의하는 제 1 단계;디스플레이될 이미지의 각 서브 픽셀들에 해당하는 컬러의 명도 정보를 포함하는 이미지 정보를 수신하는 제 2 단계;상기 컬러의 명도 정보가 상기 기준 명도 값보다 큰 경우, 상기 디스플레이면을 통하여 보이는 상기 흑색 전기 영동 입자들에 대한 상기 백색 전기 영동 입자들의 상대적 비율을 증가시키는 제 3 단계: 및상기 컬러의 명도 정보가 상기 기준 명도 값보다 작은 경우, 상기 디스플레이면을 통하여 보이는 상기 백색 전기 영동 입자들에 대한 상기 흑색 전기 영동 입자들의 상대적 비율을 증가시키는 제 4 단계를 포함하는 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치의 구동 방법.
- 제 11 항에 있어서,상기 디스플레이면을 통하여 보이는 상기 백색 전기 영동 입자들과 상기 흑색 전기 영동 입자들의 상기 상대적 비율은, 상기 디스플레이면에 대한 상기 백색 전기 영동 입자들 및 상기 흑색 전기 영동 입자들의 상대적 거리를 조절하여 달성되는 것을 특징으로 하는 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치의 구동 방법.
- 제 11 항에 있어서,상기 기준 명도값은, 상기 제 1 전기 영동 입자들 및 상기 제 2 전기 영동 입자들 중 상기 제 2 전극 상에 분산된 어느 한 종류의 입자들의 광학 상태와 상기 컬러 서브 픽셀의 컬러 유체의 광학 상태의 조합으로부터 정의되는 것을 특징으로 하는 멀티 컬러 전기 영동 디스플레이 장치의 구동 방법.
