Definitions

  • the invention relates to an orthopedic implant in the form of a femoral component of a knee endoprosthesis made of a metallic material.
  • the affected articular surfaces are removed and separated by two independent implants on the tibial and femoral side, i. at the upper end of the tibia (tibia) and at the lower end of the femur (femur), replaced.
  • Articular surface replacement on the femoral side serves as an implant, which in most known implants consists of a special high-strength titanium alloy or of a cobalt-chromium alloy, which is cast or forged and then polished.
  • the tibial joint side is replaced by an implant consisting of a titanium or cobalt chromium alloy, and a polyethylene insert is attached to it, which serves as a sliding partner for the femoral component.
  • Artificial knee replacement is now a reliable operation with implants that last up to 15 years. The most common cause of failure is aseptic implant loosening, which is caused by wear particles of the polyethylene component and can significantly shorten implant lifetimes.
  • the abrasion particles are caused by the wear of the polyethylene component caused by the friction with the femoral component. As the abrasive particles enter the bone-implant interface, biological processes are triggered at the cement-free anchor implant-bone or implant-bone cement-bone interface sites, which may result in progressive local bone destruction and eventually loosening of the implants.
