Definitions
- the invention relates to an orthopedic implant in the form of a femoral component of a knee endoprosthesis made of a metallic material.
- the affected articular surfaces are removed and separated by two independent implants on the tibial and femoral side, i. at the upper end of the tibia (tibia) and at the lower end of the femur (femur), replaced.
- Articular surface replacement on the femoral side serves as an implant, which in most known implants consists of a special high-strength titanium alloy or of a cobalt-chromium alloy, which is cast or forged and then polished.
- the tibial joint side is replaced by an implant consisting of a titanium or cobalt chromium alloy, and a polyethylene insert is attached to it, which serves as a sliding partner for the femoral component.
- Artificial knee replacement is now a reliable operation with implants that last up to 15 years. The most common cause of failure is aseptic implant loosening, which is caused by wear particles of the polyethylene component and can significantly shorten implant lifetimes.
- the abrasion particles are caused by the wear of the polyethylene component caused by the friction with the femoral component. As the abrasive particles enter the bone-implant interface, biological processes are triggered at the cement-free anchor implant-bone or implant-bone cement-bone interface sites, which may result in progressive local bone destruction and eventually loosening of the implants.
- a metallic zirconium-niobium alloy is used under the trade name Oxinium ®.
- the femoral component is converted in a heat treatment process at about 500 ° C into a zirconia ceramic, which is a coating of zirconia, as it were.
- implants have become known in which a femoral component made of mixed ceramics (BioloxDelta ® ) is used.
- the wear of the polyethylene is reduced by the use of these femoral components available on the market compared to metal / polyethylene sliding pairings, thus prolonging the durability of the knee endoprosthesis.
- disadvantages of these known Components are the high manufacturing costs of the oxinium components, the brittleness and the lack of adhesion of the ceramic component to the bone cement or bone.
- the object of the invention is to form an implant of the type mentioned in such a way that the friction and thus the wear between the femoral component and the sliding partner polyethylene are as small as possible in comparison to metal / polyethylene sliding pairings.
- the sliding surfaces of the femoral component consist of a ceramic material, wherein in the preferred embodiment, a ceramic based on zirconium dioxide is used.
- the ceramic sliding surfaces are designed as infinite in the metallic body of the femoral component transitional inserts.
- the main body of the femoral component is preferably made of a high-strength titanium alloy having a thermal expansion coefficient (CTE value) of about 10.5.
- the connection between the ceramic sliding surfaces and the base body is preferably produced in the invention by a silicate ceramic solder solidified in a ceramic fire.

- FIG. 2 shows a schematic representation of a femoral knee joint implant fixed on a thighbone
- Fig. 3 is a main body of a femoral
- Fig. 4 inserts for the femoral component of a knee endoprosthesis according to. Fig. 1 and
- FIG. 5 is a schematic representation of an assembly of base body and insert for the femoral component of a knee endoprosthesis according to FIG. 1.
- FIG. 1 shows a perspective view of a femoral component of a knee endoprosthesis 1 which, in the case of the embodiment shown here, consists of a high-strength titanium alloy or cobalt-chromium alloy.
- the implant consists of a basic body 2 which, in the case of the herein described embodiment of the high-strength titanium alloy "Grade 5" or cobalt-chromium alloy and having de 'sliding surfaces which are formed of inserts 3 made of a ceramic material.
- inserts 3 can also consist of an alumina ceramic or of a mixture of these two ceramics.
- the ceramic inserts 3 are integrated in the manner of intarsia into associated "wart-shaped" receptacles 4 in the metal base body 2 of the femoral component 1 so that they pass smoothly into the base body 2 and no shoulder edges are formed , which is solidified in a ceramic fire, firmly connected to the metal body 2.
- the ceramic inserts 3 recreate the outer shape of conventional metallic femoral components in the sliding surface and significantly reduce the abrasion between the femoral component and the polyethylene insert.
- the reduced abrasion of the sliding partners prevents the risk of particle-induced aseptic loosening and can thus contribute to longer lifetimes of the implants.
