Abstract
Systems and methods for mitigating fermentation inhibitors in a hydrolysate are disclosed. A system includes combining and mixing 200 grams active dry yeast per liter of hydrolysate in a reaction vessel. The mixture and hydrolysate are equilibrated at a defined pH, temperature, and timing in order to minimize the metabolism of sugars in the hydrolysate by the yeast. In some embodiments, the equilibration is maintained at about 25 C for 30 minutes. After equilibration, the yeast may be separated from the clean hydrolysate using a centrifuge or filter. The removed yeast cells may be recycled to the reaction vessel for subsequent treatments. The clean hydrolysate may be concentrated in order to yield concentrated hydrolysate.
