Description

SUSPENSION DEVICE FOR PAINTING EQUIPMENT, CLAMPABLE ON A PAINT CAN
The present invention relates to a storage device for painting equipment which is clampable onto a paint can.
When painting work is carried out use is normally made of a number of different brushes, optionally in combination with a paint roller. These painting tools are used
alternately, depending on the object to be painted and the stage of finishing of the object. The painter can here temporarily hold the tool not being used in his hand, optionally together with a paint can. In order to keep the hands of the painter as free as possible, it is practical to be able to store the painting equipment in the vicinity of a paint can so that it is possible to change tool without much difficulty while a hand is kept free. This is particularly important when working on a ladder and there is a greater need for a good, stable and nearby storage of the equipment. In addition, the safety of the painter is increased in such a situation in that he has a hand free.
It is otherwise noted that different types of paint can are known in the painting trade, including plastic paint pots, which optionally take a spherical form. Special pouring cans or pots are also in use. Such variants of the paint can are also included under the term Apaint can' in this application. Larger paint cans are usually provided with a hand-grip for carrying the paint can and to hang it at a suitable location during the painting work.
Several devices are known in the field which are based on clamping connections which clamp round the handle of a brush and which can be hooked onto the edge of a paint can. The bristle part of the brush is held here inside the paint can in downward direction so that paint residues still present drip into the can. These systems are particularly practical for (temporarily) storing brushes when a painting ob has been carried out and is quickly followed by another one. These devices are less suitable, or not at all
suitable, for storing one type of brush and using another type: a brush which is stored herewith inside the can makes it difficult or practically impossible for the user to still reach the paint properly with another tool. This problem occurs to greater extent when a paint roller is being used. Devices of a suitable type are moreover not yet available for a paint roller.
Although the known clamping connections are able to sufficiently secure the stored position of the tool, they have the drawback that the user must exert some force in order to move the brush into and out of the clamp because the clamp must be deformed to some extent, this often requiring the use of two hands. In addition to not being practical, this is moreover dangerous when work is being done at height. All in all, it is not easy to store painting tools in the known device, nor is it easy to remove the tools .
The invention has for its object to wholly or partially obviate one or more of the drawbacks of the known storage devices .
The storage device according to the invention comprises for this purpose a substantially planar body which is provided with:
a clamping profile for clamping fixedly onto a paint can, and
a continuous opening through the planar body and outside the zone where the clamping profile is
provided, wherein the opening is substantially form- retaining and forms a freely accessible storage provision for painting equipment.
The clamping profile ensures a firm positioning of the storage device on a paint can so that it does not shift during use. The clamping profile preferably has a shape complementary to the contour of an edge of a paint can. The continuous opening extends from the upper side to the underside of the planar body. Openings are thus provided in which the handle of a brush can be freely inserted from above. The continuous openings are advantageously of round shape so that they fit closely onto the inserted handle - which generally has a round cross-section.
The continuous opening forms a freely accessible storage provision for painting equipment because equipment can be stored herein without force being required to open the clamping provisions. These openings simultaneously ensure that inserted equipment cannot easily be displaced from the stored position. This is particularly important when a paint can provided with a storage device with inserted tool is unintentionally moved during use.
The user can thus store equipment quickly and easily in a secure manner during painting, wherein he need only hold the paint can or, if desired, hangs it by the hand-grip from an available hook or the like so that he always has one hand free. Storing the equipment using the storage device prevents dirt being picked up in the paint present on the painting tools. The hands of the user are kept cleaner since he no longer need hold in his hand equipment that is not being used. The painting work can thus be carried out more cleanly and efficiently. The chance of equipment falling on the ground is moreover significantly reduced.
It is otherwise noted that the storage device
advantageously comprises a plurality of openings so that more than one brush can be stored. If desired, these openings can differ in size.
It is noted for the sake of completeness that, when the storage device is clamped onto the edge of a paint can, the upper side of the planar body faces upward and the underside downward .
In addition, the following definition applies in this description for the peripheral side of the planar body: when the storage device is clamped onto the edge of a paint can, the peripheral side close to the paint can forms the inner side of the planar body (proximal side) and the peripheral side at a distance from the paint can forms the outer side of the planar body (distal side) .
The clamping profile is preferably provided on the underside of the planar body, and close to the inner side.
In the storage device according to the invention the upper side of the planar body is preferably provided with an upright stem disposed adjacently of the opening.
The stem serves as a stop on which an inserted brush rests with the bristle part of the brush, which is
relatively wide compared to the handle of the brush. The bristle part is generally constructed from a ferrule with the bristles of the brush inside it.
The height of the stem is preferably 1 to 3 cm.
The painter can thus easily grip an inserted brush by the handle from the upper side of the body, just below the bristle part of the brush. The brush is also prevented from sticking to the planar body as a result of paint adhering to the bristle part. This is because the stem holds the bristle part some distance from the planar body. The stem is suitable for brushes of varying dimensions, and the diameter of the handle of the brush is not a critical factor.
When the storage device is provided with two openings, a respective stem is then preferably also provided at each of the openings.
In the storage device according to the invention the upper side of the planar body is more preferably provided with an upright wall.
The handle of a paint roller can be hooked onto such an upright wall. This is related to the design of the handle of usual paint rollers on the side where it is attached to the paint roll rod: on this side the handle ends in two wing parts extending on either side of the rod. A paint roller can thus be suspended from the upright wall using one of the two wing parts. The paint roller thus hangs here with the paint roll downward.
The upright wall has an additional advantage for the storage device as a whole: it has a stronger construction because the planar body can now be less easily bent (or even broken) .
It is particularly recommended in the storage device according to the invention that the upper side of the planar body is provided with an upright wall such that the upright wall and the upright stem are combined to form one whole.
In addition to the simple production of such an integrated design, the strength and robustness of the storage device as a whole is moreover further increased.
In the case the storage device according to the invention is provided with an upright wall, it is then recommended for the periphery of the planar body to be provided on the outer side with an indentation, the
indentation being present close to the upright wall.
Such an indentation allows the paint roll rod of a paint roller to be inserted therein when a paint roller is hooked onto the upright wall. The free movement of a hooked- on paint roller is thus limited during painting, which reduces the chance of a paint roller accidentally falling out of the storage device.
The width of the indentation is preferably 0.5 to 2 cm, while the length is 0.5 to 2 cm.
It is particularly recommended that in the storage device according to the invention the periphery of the planar body is provided on the inner side with an
indentation.
Such an indentation extends from the inner side of the planar body over a determined width and with some length into the body. The width of the indentation is preferably 0.5 to 1 cm, while the length is 2 cm to 4 cm.
This indentation on the inner side solves a particular problem which occurs during use of the storage device in combination with a paint can provided with a hand-grip. When the user wishes to use the hand-grip to lift the paint can or to hang the paint can on a hook during use, the paint can is then found to tilt under the weight of the clamped-on storage device (especially when painting eguipment is stored therein) because the weight is distributed unevenly over the rim of the paint can. This is undesirable because it can for instance result in paint possibly flowing over the edge of the paint can, and paint thus being spilled.
This problem can be solved by clamping the storage device onto the edge of the paint can, with the indentation on the inner side at the position of the suspension of the hand-grip. The hand-grip is for this purpose held straight upward, while the storage device is clamped onto the edge of the paint can, wherein the wire of the hand-grip is held inside the indentation on the inner side of the storage device .
The end result is that the storage device is brought very close to the rotation point of the hand-grip in terms of weight distribution while at the same time the wire of the hand-grip is held inside the indentation, whereby further rotation of the hand-grip relative to the can is in fact impossible.
The storage device thus holds the hand-grip in a fixed, upright position, whereby the hand-grip is always easy for the user to grip. During use it is thus not necessary to first search for the hand-grip and move it upward before it can be gripped.
In the storage device according to the invention the clamping profile preferably extends along a straight line. The storage device can thus be clamped onto the edges of paint cans, which edges extends in a straight line. The clamping profile is preferably provided on the underside of the planar body. In another preferred embodiment of the invention the clamping profile extends along a curved line, preferably along a circle segment.
Such a storage system can be coupled to most paint cans which take a cylindrical form and have a circular upper edge. The storage device can preferably be coupled to cylindrical paint cans of 2.5 litres, 1 litre or 0.75 litre, with corresponding radius.
In a subsequent preferred embodiment of the storage device according to the invention the planar body is provided with strengthening ribs. The body thus comprises strengthening ribs which lie at an angle to the planar body so that the construction of the storage device does not deform or bend easily.
In a further preferred embodiment the storage device according to the invention is formed integrally. This provides for simple production of the system, for instance by injection moulding.
The storage device according to the invention is preferably made from a plastic which can withstand chemical solvents. Logically, this is advantageous during use of the system because frequent contact with such solvents occurs here. Nylon, polypropylene and combinations thereof are particularly recommended.
The storage device according to the present invention will be elucidated hereinbelow with reference to the accompanying figures, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a storage device according to a preferred embodiment of the invention, wherein it is clamped onto the upper edge of a paint can;
Figure 2 is a top view of the storage device shown in figure 1;
Figure 3 is a front view of the storage device shown in figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a side view of the storage device shown in figures 1 and 2; Figure 5 is a front view of the storage device
according to figure 3, with a brush and paint roller shown therein in their stored positions.
Fig. 1 shows schematically the upper side of a paint can 1 with an upper edge 3 and an upright hand-grip 2 which is rotatably connected in known manner to the upper side of the paint can (this connection is not shown) .
A storage device 5 according to the invention is clamped onto upper edge 3 of the paint can. The storage device is based on a substantially planar body 6 which is provided with continuous openings 7 through the planar body, with two upright stems 9 disposed adjacently of openings 7 on the upper side of the planar body. The upper side of the planar body is moreover provided with an upright wall 11 which is formed integrally with stems 9.
Provided on outer side 14 of planar body 6 is an indentation 16 present close to upright wall 11. An
indentation 20 is provided on inner side 18 of planar body 6. On the one hand this indentation 20 encloses upright hand-grip 2 of the paint can and on the other enables storage device 5 to be clamped onto the paint can at the position of upright hand-grip 2 and close to the rotatable connection .
Fig. 2 shows a top view of the storage device according to fig. 1. Components corresponding to the components of fig. 1 are designated in fig. 2 with the same reference numerals. Side walls 22 of storage device 5 are provided with spaces 24 for clamping onto a paint can. These spaces 24 are bounded by clamping profiles 26 which can bend to some extent and are thereby suitable for clamping to a paint can .
Fig. 3 shows a front view of the storage device according to fig. 1 and 2. The components corresponding to the components of fig. 1 and 2 are given the same reference numerals . Fig. 4 is a side view of the storage device shown in figures 1 and 2. The components corresponding to the components of fig. 1 and 2 are given the same reference numerals .
Fig. 5 shows the same front view of the storage device as in fig. 3, with corresponding reference numerals. Fig. 5 also shows a brush 30, the handle 32 of which is placed through opening 7 of the storage device. The widened upper part of the brush, consisting of bristle part 34 and a ferrule 36 in which the bristles are clamped, rests against stem 9 and is thus held at a distance from the planar body of the storage device. Shown next to the brush is a paint roller 40 with a paint roll 42 which is rotatably connected to a paint roll rod 44. Handle 46 of paint roller 40 ends on the underside in two wing parts 48 extending on the front and rear side of rod 44. The non-visible wing part 48 on the rear side hooks behind upright wall 11. Paint roller 40 can thus be easily suspended from the storage device, wherein the paint roll rod is held in position inside indentation 16.
