Definitions
- the field of application responds to a compact set of configurable golf clubs.
- the set of golf clubs of the present invention allows adjusting the basic characteristics of a golf club, allowing the player during the development of his game to seek to adjust the club to his stroke: by varying the length of the rod, exchanging heads on the referred rod and / or modifying the loft angle of a head.
- the compact assembly of the present invention comprehensively comprises: rods, woods, irons and putters.
- the heads and poles on the traditional poles are fixed. Therefore for a variety of strokes during a game requires the existence of a variety of rods and heads.
- a head In golf clubs one of the characteristics by which a head is defined is by its angle of hit to the ball, an angle that in golf is called a loft angle: acute angles for short and precise distances and right angles for long distances.
- the rods fix their length and flexibility according to the distance of blow: short and rigid rods for short distances and long rods more flexible for long distances.
- wood and hybrid have been designed. Heads that normally vary between loft angles of 8 or 28 °. Depending on the playing style of a player they can make up a set around 5 heads of this type in the bag for game.
- the woods are classified as: driver or wood # 1 and responds to the loft angle 8 ° to 13 °, wood # 2 from 12 ° to 15 °, growing the numbering to wood # 7 with loft angles 25 ° to 28 °. There are woods with numbers up to # 15, but there are very few players who use them.
- the woods # 2 and woods of higher numbers also known as fairway woods.
- the hybrids present the appearance of a wood with profile or lower head height, with range of angles around a wood # 5 or # 7. Hybrids with sharper angles are also presented, such as the equivalent to an # 5 iron around 28 °.
- the length of a wooden stick # 1 considering an adult of average height, varies between 43 to 45 inches (109 to 114 cm). It diminishes its length progressively between half an inch (between 1.27 to 2.54 cm) to greater number of the wood, until the wood # 7, being this last one with an approximated length of 41 inches (104 cm).
- irons and wedges very sharp loft angle irons
- the irons are classified from number # 1 to # 9, being the number # 1 equivalent to a loft angle between 15 ° to 18 °, progressively increasing the loft angle of the remaining irons to number # 9, which equals 45 loft angles ° to 48 °.
- the wedges are classified as pitch wedge 47 ° to 53 °, gab wedge 50 ° to 54 °, sand wedge 54 ° to 58 ° and wedge wedge 58 ° to 62 °.
- the length of a # 1 iron rod for an adult of average height, varies around 40 inches (102 cm). It diminishes its length progressively in half an inch (1, 27 cm) to greater number of the wood, until the iron # 9, being the latter in winch of 36 inches (91 cm).
- the wedges have a length of the stick around 35 inches (89 cm).
- the rules of golf establish a maximum of 14 clubs in the bag to develop the game.
- the moment of inertia is defined by the length of the rod and the weight of the head.
- the novelty of this innovation lies in the set of functionalities correlated in an implement for the game of golf with a compact format and configurable, which emulates the performance of a complete set of standard golf clubs.
- Mechanisms of coupling or adjustment with an important potential for mismatches between parts and / or fractures include zones of concentration of efforts. All types of mechanisms to be included in woods, hybrids, irons or wedges, either in the rod or in the head are subjected to high dynamic efforts during the execution of a blow. Certainly the fatigue of the material in the zones of concentration of effort in the pieces that make up the mechanisms, increase with the repetition of the blows.
- Toothed pieces for fixing loft angle that present discrete positions that do not necessarily establish positions or angles sought by the player for the execution of the blow; It is added to the foregoing that many of these schemes require excessive manipulation, demanding release schemes, position fixation and then blocking by the player, US PAT. 5,083,779, US PAT. 2,091, 794.
- connection mechanisms of connection that are in their basic conceptual design of difficult fit without looseness between the pieces, especially if one takes into account that these wedges should be executed by the players in the field of play, prior to each stroke.
- the mechanisms of the present invention incorporate in their basic conceptual design, adjustments and / or couplings of very fast execution and at the same time with tolerances between pieces by compression, exerted by pieces of robust basic trigonometry.
- the mechanisms for each of its parts seek to balance the balance of aesthetics, low weight and avoid points of concentration of stress that result in parts susceptible to fractures or early deterioration in the adjustments due to fatigue failure.
- the correct fit is to provide the right head, with a suitable loft angle, and with a rod length consistent with the chosen head. Adjustment that must be simple to execute by any type of player, before each stroke, for the regulation times of the court, delivering as a result a club with a solid assembly equivalent to that of a standard golf club.
- the game is developed for many hours and on a route that exceeds 10 kilometers for an 18-hole course. If a complete bag of clubs is considered, the effort required to transfer it is significant. This problem is also accused in the transfer of the vehicle bag to the club; the problem with the house of sticks is avoided, but the inconvenience remains if one wishes to play in more than one club. Especially if it is practiced by more than one person that makes up the family group. Another view of the same problem, refers to the player who travels frequently for business reasons. This player has no choice but to ' move his equipment or lease used equipment. The first option is especially inconvenient for transfer in airplanes, the second one is often an unpleasant experience because the teams do not fit the player first and often they are damaged by their use.
- the correct adjustment consists in providing the right head, with a suitable loft angle, and with a rod length consistent with the chosen head. Adjustment to be made by the player before each stroke, for the regulatory execution times of the court. The foregoing implies that the adjustment must be simple to carry out, regardless of whether it is a child, adult or elderly person. Finally, a stick with solid adjustment mechanisms that are not subject to fractures or premature wear is also required; This last one is especially important since all the blows of a game could be executed with one or two sticks. SOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM OF THE TECHNIQUE
- the novelty of this innovation lies in the set of functionalities correlated in an implement for the game of golf with a compact and configurable format, which allows to emulate the performance of a complete set of standard golf clubs.
- a first functionality is that as in the case of a conventional golf club game, the compact and configurable set of the present invention, may include heads type: driver woods, fairway woods, hybrids, irons: covering totally or partially # 1 to # 9, wedges and putters.
- a second functionality is that each of this type of heads can vary its loft angle, by means of a mechanism, so that it can adequately cover the full spectrum of loft angles. It does not limit the possibility of extending outside the loft angle range of conventional heads or in turn defining heads with more limited loft angle ranges. The latter forces a greater number of heads in the compact set, but has the advantage that these heads are closer to the behavior of conventional heads, for example in their weight and therefore behavior of the moment of inertia or swingweight.
- the adjustable loft operates by means of a mechanism fixed to the rear area of the head and attached to a modified hosel; Its conformation is a triangle, where one of its sides can be adjusted by means of a screw, operated by the player's fingers.
- the second functionality means that the game of golf can be developed by a player with a reduced number of heads, which are exchanged preferably over one or a small number of rods.
- these heads and rods contain an exchange mechanism, of comfortable manipulation to be executed by the player to shape his suit. before making a stroke.
- a single rod is proposed, but if the player estimates that he wants one rod to play the woods and another for irons, there is no impediment for the compact set to include two rods instead of just one. For this case, both rods would contain a heads exchange mechanism.
- the mechanism of exchange of heads consists of a rod or pin that is fixed to the hosel of the head, pin that is then coupled to a pair of concentric cylinders located at one end of the rod and containing balls, which lock the mechanism to be housed in the bas-reliefs of the referred pin or shank.
- the mechanism is operated by the player's fingers, displacing the most external of the aforementioned cylinders.
- a fourth functionality is that since it is proposed to play with only one or a small number of rods, these must be adjusted in their length, according to the chosen head and loft angle.
- the rod length adjustment mechanism consists of a rod with bas-reliefs in its mantle, which receives a sliding handle, which in turn houses a pair of concentric cylinders located at one end of the handle and containing balls, which lock the mechanism to be housed in the bas-reliefs of the referred rod.
- the mechanism is operated by the player's fingers, displacing the most external of the aforementioned cylinders.
- a fifth functionality is that since the loft angle of a head is varied, it should preferably contain a modified sole, in such a way as to ensure the correct lie or rest (head rests horizontally on the ground) for the range of loft angles defined for this head.
- a sixth functionality is that the heads exchange mechanism allows to incorporate any commercial head with hosel of standard dimensions of the industry.
- the latter makes it possible to incorporate, in the compact, adjustable set, conventional commercially available heads of the player's preference; for example putter heads and / or woods # 1 or drive.
- Hosel is understood as the extension or part of the head that has a hole where the rod is inserted.
- the adjustable compact set behaves at least equivalent to a set of conventional golf clubs.
- the conformation of an adjustable stick is very simple, requiring a maximum of three steps.
- the steps are summarized as a) select a head and rod, coupling them together; b) adjust loft angle, in case the head is adjustable loft and c) adjust the length of the rod.
- the mechanisms are simple to operate, all manipulated only by the player's fingers.
- the assemblies have been designed to remain firmly engaged during the execution of a blow; giving the player the feeling of a solid stick and blow.
- the athlete can, during the game, adjust the device to its physical constitution and style of play. This opens the possibility of making hits with greater precision. This is one of the main goals of golf practice: more precision means less hits to complete the round.
- the adjustable set has a clear advantage in the case of children, since the implement, being configurable, allows it to adapt to its physical development.
- the above can be especially relevant for the senior player, representing this type of players a very important part of the universe of players.
- the space occupied by an adjustable compact set is notably smaller, allowing it to be easily moved by vehicle or plane, even more if one thinks that more than one member of the family group practices this sport.
- the transfer of a standard set of sticks is often infeasible for space or because of its high cost to geographically distant places.
- the athlete decides to have more than one set of standard clubs, located in different clubs or if this does not happen It is feasible to consider the lease or loan of clubs.
- the above examples do not apply to the adjustable compact set.
- the adjustable compact set has the great advantage of allowing the player to always have the same implement, regardless of geographical location decides to play, because as already mentioned, and would have no space limitation and / or costs for the transfer of the implement.

- the slots in the telescopic tubular unit developed from a composite material generate discontinuity in the mechanical properties in the Shaft part. The interruption of the fibers that carry the mechanical loads and the stress concentrators that the groove type geometries, cause that the loads are amplified to unacceptable levels for said materials. The above is also valid for conventional materials such as steel.
- the wand has no locking mechanism to hold the wand in the selected extension position and the manner in which the pin engages the slot can hardly provide a secure and impact resistant connection involving the use of the wand during a game .
- the quick connector claimed by the patent US 6,547,673 is composed of a pin that slides through a slot and is fixed so as to prevent rotation by a pin that is held in place by means of a spring or elastic force. Due to the above, during a game there is a risk that the torsional forces imposed on the connector overcome the elastic force of the safety, allowing the rotation of the mechanism and the consequent release of the head. In this way, the quick connector claimed by the patent US6, 547,673 presents operating risks that can give rise to an accident.
- Patent US 6,547,673 has weak mechanisms: telescopic and head exchange and no loft angle mechanism. The present invention is more reliable, incorporating more reliable mechanisms that support the high mechanical loads that the practice of golf imposes on its mechanical components.
- the present invention discloses additional elements with respect to US Pat. No. 6,547,673, such as the loft angle adjustment, which is not deductible from the prior art cited, with respect to its execution and reliability characteristics.
- US Patent 5,083,779 claims a universal golf club comprising: a rod comprising an upper end and a lower end; an adjustable handle operatively associated with the upper end of the rod; a head rotatably attached to said operatively fixed element with respect to a first horizontal axis where the head comprises: a main body; and a member with the impact face rotatably connected to said main body through a second horizontal axis which extends through said main body and which is disposed generally perpendicular to said first horizontal axis.
- US Pat. No. 5,083,779 has a fixed head, therefore it is not possible to adjust the head according to the type of stroke.
- Patent US 5,083,779 having a head attached to the rod permanently during play implies that the player must also adjust the lie angle, by adjusting the length of the rod. This involves two operations for rod adjustment. What makes the process of adjustment very slow, contravening the spirit of the game that seeks continuity between blows and blows.
- the toothed scheme presents discrete positions that do not necessarily establish positions or angles sought by the player for the execution of the stroke.
- the adjustment of the rod, by means of a pin results in a mechanism that requires an incompatible tolerance as required for its manipulation and to give a feeling of a solid union, giving the player the feeling of an implement with loose pieces.
- the present invention considers mechanisms that provide in its basic conceptual design adjustments and / or couplings of very fast execution and at the same time allow tolerances between very thin pieces, avoiding the sensation of loose pieces; that allow to imitate the game with a conventional stick for each position adjusted in the compact set of golf clubs.
- US Pat. No. 4,253,666 describes a set of golf clubs composed of a series of three heads, to be assembled in a single rod composed of two sections.
- US Patent 4,253,666 includes a detailed description of a suitcase for transporting the indicated parts.
- the fixing means for obtaining the quick connector comprise heads that replace the hosel, rods with a pair of fin-type springs elastic that fix an axial connection and prevent rotation. Said shanks are inserted in the rod that includes slots where the fin springs of the connection are inserted and fixing the head to the rod.
- Claim 4,253,666 describes three types of heads: iron type for medium distances, iron type for short distances and a putter.
- the claims also include the description of the rod formed by two parts, which are assembled with a version of the same axial connection mechanism comprising in one of the parts springs type fins that are inserted into grooves in the other part of the rod, fixing the two parts that make up the rod axially and rotationally.
- US4, 253,666 is only based on the exchange of heads, in principle limited to only three heads. It does not vary the length of the rod and does not add additional configuration features such as variation of the loft angle. Given the restrictions described, US Patent 4,253,666 assumes its scope to a limited type of blows, by way of example it excludes wood-type blows; and indicates its use for a par 3 type court.
- the present invention discloses additional elements with respect to US Pat. No. 4,253,666, such as the telescopic rod adjustment, loft angle head adjustment, which is not deductible from the prior art cited, with respect to its execution and reliability characteristics.
- the mechanisms presented in the present invention are quick to adjust, easy to handle and above all resistant, avoiding areas of stress concentration, to the significant torque efforts generated during the blow.
- US 2,091,794 discloses a pivoting head integral with an axle including a sprocket at its end. A pin with fixed toothed end or frees the cogwheel and therefore sets or enables adjustment of the head angle.
- the pin is part of a screw that projects from inside the rod. By turning the screw, driven from the rod, the pin approaches or moves away from the gear wheel.
- a hollow rod houses the described mechanisms.
- US 2,091,794 describes a telescopic adjustment that operates by means of the concentric tubular connection between the rod and the handle. Summary of US patent 2,091, 794.
- US 2,091,794 literally describes a golf club comprising a head having a hollow rod and a blade-shaped head, means for pivoting the blade about an axis of rotation parallel to the ground.
- the adjustment comprises a circular member with rigid teeth to the blade and extending inside the hollow rod; a pin disposed within the rod having a face with teeth arranged angularly adapted to be brought into engagement with said toothed member; means arranged within the rod for pushing the pin out of engagement with said toothed member; an axis that engages by means of a thread with the hollow rod and adapted to force the pin to engage with the toothed member with a pushing action of said means when said shaft is screwed to a predetermined distance in the rod, said means pushing the pin out of engagement with the toothed member when the shaft is unscrewed at a predetermined distance to allow adjustment of the blade.
- the head is described as a blade, with the possibility of being hit by its two opposing faces, thus enabling the possibility for left-handed players as right-
- US 2,091,794 describes a telescopic adjustment that is not detailed in the claims, except for the contents of the specification and what is can detach from the figures accompanied in said patent.
- the telescopic adjustment operates by means of the concentric tubular connection between the rod and the handle.
- the rod has radial indentations in bas-relief at regular distances.
- the handle includes a toothed area and at its end a lip with a shape that enables its fixation in the bas-relief grooves.
- the lip is fixed or released by means of a cylindrical piece with internal thread that is screwed on the toothed area of the handle.
- the rod has a guide in the axial direction in bas-relief on its external surface, while the handle has a guide in relief on its internal mantle.
- the mechanism does not allow the exchange of heads, which limits the player to develop the blows with all their potential.
- the present invention enables the exchange of heads that allows to solve basic aspects such as: balance of moment of inertia between different length sticks using heads of different weight, adequate contact with the floor by means of soles designed according to the loft angle and more stable blows increasing moment of inertia of wood type heads and putter type.
- the present invention allows the exchange of the heads taking care that the described aspects can be chosen by the player prior to the execution of each hit.
- the mechanism described in US Pat. No. 2,091,794 for adjusting the head is complex and therefore susceptible to faults. Its adjustment is supported by a toothed area with a very small interference surface.
- the torque to which a piece of golf is subjected is important, and therefore transmitted to pieces of small size generate very important stress concentrations, which facilitates the possibility of fractures and therefore decreases the useful life of the implement.
- US 2,091,794 includes the description of the length variation of the rod by means of a telescopic adjustment based on its fixation by screwing a piece on the end of the handle.
- the mechanisms of the present invention are designed to minimize the impact of adjustment between positions. For the loft angle case, although it operates via a screw, this always operates leaving the loft angle fixed, avoiding the release mode to later fix.
- the present invention for the case of rod length adjustment, is carried out by moving an external ring attached to the handle, the ring fixes the position, length of the rod, by means of a spring, minimizing its handling.
- the present invention and US patent 2,091,794 disclose completely different loft and beam length adjustment mechanisms.
- the present invention allows the exchange of heads that US patent 2,091, 794 does not consider.
- the present invention discloses elements for the same purposes as US 2,091,794, such as telescopic rod adjustment, loft angle head adjustment, which are executed differently and with improved reliability characteristics.
- the present invention also incorporates quick coupling mechanisms that can be incorporated into any standard commercial head.
- the mechanisms presented in the present invention are quick to adjust, easy to handle and above all resistant, avoiding areas of stress concentration, to the significant torque efforts generated during the blow.
