Definitions
- the present invention refers to the field of products for domestic animals, and more specifically to a toilet-box for cats with device for the calibrated generation of ozone with anti-odor and antibacterial action for zootechnical use.
- the cap has an opening at a front wall in order to allow the animal to access the litter. Said opening is in turn closeable by means of a grating or swivel panel.
- the toilet-box is used when it is necessary to transport an animal in a vehicle, without allowing him freedom of movement (e.g. in a train or airplane). In the home environment, the use of the toilet-box is preferred to the simple tray, since it protects the litter from atmospheric agents (if the toilet-box is kept outside) and contains the odors which emanate from the feces and urine. On the other hand, the cap limits the circulation of air above the litter, thus favoring the proliferation of the bacterial and microbic load, and creating an extremely unhealthy environment inside the toilet-box.
- microbes and bacteria generate foul odors, thus making the use of the cap fruitless in part.
- the more a domestic animal is exposed to microbes and bacteria the more its owner will be at risk of infection, together with the other people who frequent the same home environment.
- In order to remove the bacterial and microbe load in the toilet-box it is necessary to frequently substitute the litter, or continuously add sanitizing substances to the same. This requires considerable diligence at high cost.
- the object of the present invention is to overcome the aforesaid drawbacks and to indicate a bacteriostatic toilet-box.
- the present invention has as object a container used as a toilet for domestic animals, equipped with a first opening in the wall for allowing the access by the animal to a litter generally constituted by sandy or granular material collected on the bottom of the container, wherein according to the invention the container includes:
- - means capable of emitting ozone into the container at pre-established time intervals, for each emission producing an innocuous calibrated quantity of ozone for the domestic animal, the ozone carrying out a bactericide, fungicide and virus-inactivating effect within the container;
- said second opening is opposite said first opening.
- said second opening is opposite the bottom of the container.
- said ozone emitter means are outside the container and emit ozone through said second opening.
- said ozone emitter means are removable.
- ozone emitter means are miniaturized and integrated in the container and receive oxygen to be converted into ozone through said second opening.
- the container is composed of a tray for the litter and of a closure cap, the tray having a perimeter groove for fix- ing the lower edge of the cap.
- the container is composed of a tray for the litter and of a closure cap, said tray and cap having flat perimeter edges that are mating and held in position by means of clips.
- said ozone emitter means are power supplied by low-voltage electric batteries.
- said ozone emitter means are power supplied by means of an electric transformer connected to the power grid with a current rectifier in cascade.
- the toilet-box object of the present invention, ensures bacteriostasis by simply drawing oxygen from the atmosphere, hence without requiring the addition of any substance to the litter, or the continuous intervention of man.
- the ozone is reconverted into oxygen, without leaving any residue.
- the ozone emitter applied to the outside of the toilet-box can be removed before carrying out the ordinary cleaning operations of the tray and cap, so as to avoid risks of ruining the device.

- FIG. 11 is a perspective view of another type of container used as a toilet for domestic animals according to the present invention.
- FIG. 1 shows a container 1 used as a toilet for domestic animals and defined as a "toilet-box” below, comprising a tray 2 containing sandy material 3, and a cover structure 4 superimposed thereon, defined below as a "cap".
- the tray 2 is constituted by a rectangular base with smoothed corners, from which the side walls 5 orthogonally rise; as shown in the lower enlargement, such walls 5 have an edge 6 which has a first short orthogonal segment 6a directed outward, con- tiguous with the upper end of an arm of a U-shaped perimeter seat 6b having upwardly-directed concavity.
- the lower edge of the side walls of the cap 4 is fittingly inserted; one of such side walls has an opening 7 for the passage of the domestic animal.
- a small window 8 is obtained for introducing, in the toilet-box 1 , the ozone O3 generated by an ozone emitter 9 fixed to the wall 10 outside the toilet- box 1.
- the tray 2 and the cap 4 of the embodiment respectively have 10 cm and 40 cm height.
- the sandy material 3 nearly completely fills the tray 2.
- Said material is suitable for absorbing the excrements of the domestic animal, such as: a cat, rabbit, hamster, small-size dogs, etc. The following can therefore be used: sand, sawdust, wood chips, paper, hay, or material found on the market for specific litter use.
- the tray and the cap are preferably made of plastic material cast in a mold, for example: PVC, PET, PMMA, polycarbonate, hydrocarbon derivates and elastomers.
- Other materials used can be the following: linoleum, wood, wood chipboard, pressed plant fibers, cellulose, paper and cardboard, metals or alloys, glass and silica in all forms thereof.
- the small-size ozone emitter 9 is selected from among those commonly found on the market, preferably in accordance both with the Community directive 93/43/CEE, and with the Italian Republic legislative directive 81/2008.
- the ozone emitter 9 is an electric apparatus that is preferably power supplied by low-voltage batteries. Alternatively, the ozone emitter is power supplied by means of an electric transformer connected to the power grid with a current rectifier in cascade.
- the device 9 produces ozone by drawing small quantities of atmospheric air and transforming the oxygen present therein into ozone gas, using the principle known as "corona discharge".
- the bactericide power of ozone gas is scientifically recognized, as is the capacity of such gas to be reconverted into pure oxygen immediately after having attacked the bacteria and pollutant agents present in the air and on the surfaces with which it comes into contact, in this case the surfaces inside the toilet-box. In this manner, one obtains a substantial elimination of the bacteria present in the toilet-box, with con- sequent reduction of the foul odors that tend to be formed due to animal activity in the toilet, such as defecation or urination.
- the following species are among the microorganisms that die in contact with ozone: salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium botulinum, dysentery bacilli, staphylococcus aureus and hepatitis virus.
- the device 9 includes a timer circuit that in a known manner controls the start and the duration of each emission phase, such that the ozone is emitted in a discontinuous manner at pre-established intervals, producing calibrated quantities of ozone for each emission.
- a timer circuit that in a known manner controls the start and the duration of each emission phase, such that the ozone is emitted in a discontinuous manner at pre-established intervals, producing calibrated quantities of ozone for each emission.
- ozone which is useful for performing the antibacterial, antimicrobic and anti-odor action, and which is innocuous for the domestic animal.
- the toxicity threshold is the same for the domestic animal and for man, since both are mammals.
- the United States Food and Drug Administration states that 0.05 ppm (parts per million) constitutes a safe level for an inhalation of 24 hours per day.
- 0.05 ppm is the concentration at which most people smell the odor of ozone.
- the ozone concentration inside the toilet-box is never greater than 0.106 mg/m 3 , corresponding to 0.05 ppm.
- the device 9 emits ozone in the toilet-box 1 for sixteen seconds every sixteen minutes.
- Figures 2, 3 and 4 are respectively front, top and side views of the tray 2 of figure 1.
- Figures 5, 6 and 7 are respectively front, side and rear views of the cap 4 of figure 1.
- Figure 8 shows another toilet-box 15 embodiment, it too constituted by two se- paratable parts: a tray 16 and a cap 17.
- the tray and the cap of the toilet-box of figure 8 have nearly the same height, and the respective edges are not fittingly connected but rather are superimposed on each other. More specifically, the edge (not visible in the figure) of the tray 16 is outwardly extended, orthogonal to the side walls, for a perimeter segment of constant width, while the edge 18 of the cap 17 is extended like the preceding edge, abutting thereon and laterally enveloping it. The two edges are held adherent to each other by means of clips 19 applied with pressure.
- the cap 17 has an opening 20 on one wall for the passage of the domestic animal and a small window 21 on the opposite wall 22.
- Figure 9 shows the rear side of the toilet-box 15 of figure 8, where a bracket 23 is visible, closed on three sides against the wall 22 of the cap 15 at the window 21 , with the emitter 9 at its interior which draws oxygen from the outside and emits ozone through the small window 21.
- Figure 10 shows a section of the rear wall 22 of the toilet-box 15 of figure 8.
- a miniaturized ozone emitter 24 is visible, pasted to the wall 22 on the edges of the small window 21 so as to obstruct the same.
- the emitter 24 integrated in the wall 22 draws oxygen from outside the small window 21 and emits ozone into the toilet-box 15.
- FIG 11 shows another toilet-box 25 embodiment, it too constituted by two separatable parts: a tray 26 and a cap 27.
- the cap 27 has an opening 31 on one wall for the passage of the domestic animal and a small window (not visible) on the opposite wall.
- the main differences with respect to the toilet-box 15 of figure 8 are in the closure device, which now consists of hooks overturnable around hinges 29 applied to the edge of the cap 27, and in the seat for the ozone emitter 9 which is now obtained at the center of the ceiling of the cap 27.
- the cap is removable from the tray in order to allow the cleaning operations of both parts.
- the toilet-box can be obtained in different shapes based on current styles.
