Abstract

Method for grinding the outer surface of an essentially cylindrical workpiece (1), such as a roll, with a displaceable grinding device, which is installed beside the workpiece, and which grinding head (2) of the grinding device is moved back and forth in essentially the direction of the axis of rotation of the workpiece (1), as well as towards the workpiece (1) and away from it in essentially the radial direction of the workpiece, and in which method a reference line (8) is arranged beside the cylindrical workpiece (1), and in which method the measuring system (7) measures the position of the carriage of the grinding device in relation to the workpiece (1) and to the reference line (8). In the method the geometry of the workpiece (1) is measured, on the basis of which measurement result a grinding control curve (25) of the grinding control program is set for the surface (1") to be ground of the workpiece (1), according to which curve during the grinding the grinding head (2) of the grinding device is moved faster in the direction (Z direction) that is essentially parallel with the axis of rotation (1') of the workpiece (1) and/or the grinding means of the grinding head (2) is rotated more slowly and/or the workpiece (1) is rotated faster at the point of the surface sections (21 ) protruding less from the line (20) of the target surface of the workpiece (1 ) and the grinding head (2) is moved more slowly in the direction (Z direction) that is essentially parallel with the axis of rotation of the workpiece and/or the grinding means of the grinding head (2) is rotated faster and/or the workpiece (1) is rotated more slowly at the point of the surface sections (22) protruding more from the line (20) of the target surface. The invention also relates to a displaceable grinding apparatus.
