Abstract

An apparatus for reduction of a solid feedstock has a first electrode (20) and second electrode (30) located within an electrolysis chamber, the second electrode being disposed above an upper surface of the first electrode. A retaining barrier acts (70) to retain solid feedstock within an area of the upper surface of the first electrode. The retaining barrier is formed from an electrically insulating material.
