Definitions
- This invention relates to a collapsible banner.
- A-frame banners are popular choices for advertisers to promote their brands.
- Rigid A-frame banners often have the disadvantage of either being collapsible and having a variety of loose parts, or being permanent which renders transportation difficult and also means that it is difficult to change the advertising content of the banner.
- a collapsible display means includes a tensile frame structure comprising an elongated rigid spine member and a plurality of resiliently flexible legs; and one or more fabric sheet elements; the spine including means fixed to the spine for releasably receiving the flexible legs, the free ends of which, when assembled, engage at least the longitudinal edges of the fabric sheet to form a tensile structure spanned by the sheet element (s).
- the means for receiving the resiliently flexible legs comprises holes in the spine into which the free ends of the legs fit. These holes are preferably angled such that the received legs are angled outwardly and downwardly toward the corners of the fabric sheet. This results in a frame having a general trestle -like configuration when assembled.
- a pair of collars is provided, each including a pair of angled mounting tubes for receiving the flexible legs.
- the collars are preferably securely fastened to or permanently mounted upon the rigid spine member a predetermined distance from each end of the spine, the mounting tubes being orientated to project the received legs outwardly and downwardly to form a framework having a general trestle configuration.
- the sheet of fabric is typically rectangular in shape and includes pockets or pouches at each corner for engaging the free ends of the flexible legs.
- the resultant banner typically resembles an A-frame banner.
- the sheet may further be configured to span all three sides of the trestle frame with the result that the frame may be stood upright to provide a triangular banner.
- Either the legs or the free edges of the sheet of fabric may include ties or other suitable fastening means to prevent the legs from splaying, in so doing maintaining the triangular or A-frame configuration.
- the flexible legs are preferably longer than required and must be bent to achieve insertion into the pockets of the fabric, the flexibility of the legs maintaining the fabric in a taut condition, the frame comprising a tensile structure.
- a single collar is provided which is mountable at the midpoint of the rigid spine member and includes two pairs of mounting tubes arranged to receive four flexible legs to form a frame having a general trestle configuration.
- the legs are preferably flexible and may comprise a light-weight metal, for example aluminium, or fibreglass or the like material.
- the legs may be attached to the collars (holes) by means of a flexible or elastic cord which permits decoupling of the legs from the tubular elements, but not complete separation of the components.
- This has the advantage that the collapsed frame has no loose components.
- the frame of this invention offers a number of advantages over the more technical, complicated and expense wind-up version and others having an umbrella-like mechanism for erecting and collapsing the frame and banner. Aside from the lower cost, the lack of a bulky mechanism permits the creation of much smaller versions of the banner which may be useful in a variety of situations.
- the fabric sheet may include triangular flaps which may be fastened between the free edges of the two display faces to provide a banner with 3 rd and 4 th display faces.
- the spine forms the apex of an A-frame structure comprised of a pair of legs located at or near each end of the spine and engaging the pockets in the corners of the fabric sheets.
- each A-frame structure may comprise a module joinable to or associated with similar modules either side to create longer banners.
- the spines of each module may engage those of adjacent modules.
- a single spine is provided which comprises inter-engaging components with the spine including plurality of means for receiving the flexible legs of which multiple sets of 2 pairs are provided, and a single fabric sheet including a plurality of sets of pockets for receiving the ends of the flexible legs as described above.
- the spine forms the longitudinal axis of the frame which comprises a set of 3 legs at or near each end of the spine, two of which engage pockets in the corners of the fabric sheet, with the 3 rd legs engaging pockets located at the midpoint of opposed sides of the sheet to form the apex of an A-frame.
- Figure 1a is a perspective view of an A-frame display or banner according to the invention
- Figure 1 b is a perspective view of the preferred form of the frame
- Figure 2 is a perspective view of an alternative form of the frame
- Figure 3 is a perspective view of a collar
- Figure 4 is a similar view of an alternative form of collar
- Figure 5 is a perspective view of a further alternative form of frame
- Figures 6 a and b are perspective views of a further alternative form of the banner and frame
- Figure 7 is a perspective view of a banner orientated in upright condition.
- Figure 8 is a perspective view of an elongated version of the banner of Figure 1 a.
- an A-frame banner 10 comprises a sheet of fabric 12 attached to a tensile frame 14 having a generally trestle-like configuration.
- the frame includes a rigid spine 16 with two pairs of angled holes 18a and 18b, each for receiving resiliently flexible legs 20.
- the holes 18a and 18b and the tubular elements 24 are directed outwardly and downwardly to provide a frame which has the general shape of a trestle.
- the free ends of the legs engage pockets 26 in the corners of the fabric sheet 12.
- the length of the legs together with their inherent flexibility which causes the arcuate configuration of the legs when the frame is assembled (see Figure 1) and this causes the legs to keep the fabric of the banner taut for excellent display properties.
- Ties 28 or the like may be used to prevent the legs from splaying i.e. to retain the A-frame configuration of the banner. These may form part of the fabric sheet 12 or may be attached to the legs.
- FIG 4 an alternative form of collar 30 is shown which is located at the midpoint of the rigid spine 16 and includes two pairs of oppositely orientated tubular elements 32a and 32b. This results in a similar frame configuration to that of Figures 1 b and 3, and which is shown in Figure 5. Again the banner that results resembles a typical A-frame banner of the type shown in Figure 1a.
- FIG 6 a further alternative form of the invention is shown, in which the frame 34 comprises a rigid spine 16 having two sets of 3 holes 36 (or collars - not shown). Instead of 2 legs 20 engaging the pockets of the fabric sheet at the corners of the longitudinal edges 36 of the sheet only, a third, oppositely orientated leg 38 is also provided at each end. Each leg 38 engages a pocket at the midpoints 40 of the transverse edges 42 of the fabric sheet to form the apex of an A-frame banner as shown in Figure 6.
- the banner may be stood upright as shown in Figure 7.
- the A-frame banner shown is substantially elongated, for example it may be several metres in length, and comprises a spine 50 comprising two components which are joined at 52. In this form they are shown to be demountable but could be articulated.
- a single large fabric sheet 54 is provided with multiple pockets 56.
- the spine includes additional holes 58 for receiving the flexible legs 60 which, in the version shown, comprises 4 pairs.
