Definitions
- the present invention relates to a cleaning apparatus, for example, a toilet cleaning apparatus.
- Conventional cleaning apparatus such as for a toilet typically comprise an elongate handle section from one end of which extends a cleaning head.
- the cleaning head usually takes the form of a brush having a plurality of bristles which may be used to clean and scrub a toilet bowl surface and rim.
- the handle tends to be sufficiently long for a user to clean and scrub a toilet without their hand or arm having to come too close to the area being cleaned.
- a stand or container is also paired with the cleaning apparatus so that, when not in use, the apparatus can be stowed away.
- a problem with conventional toilet cleaning apparatus comprising a brush is that the bristles tend to pick up hair, faecal matter and other undesirable contaminants which make the brush head a breeding ground for bacteria.
- Such a cleaning apparatus also requires regular and thorough cleaning which can be time consuming and burdensome, and consequently is often neglected.
- toilet cleaning apparatus comprise a disposable cleaning head which may be discarded after use and replaced with a fresh cleaning head.
- toilet cleaning apparatus is unnecessarily wasteful and costly to maintain due to the requirement for replaceable cleaning heads.
- An object of the present invention is to mitigate the above difficulties.
- a cleaning apparatus for a toilet comprising a handle section and a cleaning section characterised in that at least a part of the cleaning section comprises a material having non-stick properties.
- a cleaning apparatus does not retain undesirable toilet matter and so may be easily cleaned and reused.
- Such a cleaning apparatus is therefore more hygienic and cost effective than conventional toilet cleaning apparatus. Being reusable, it is also more ecologically friendly than existing cleaning apparatus that require replaceable, disposable cleaning heads.
- the material having non-stick properties may be flexible.
- the material having non-stick properties may be resilient.
- the material having non-stick properties may be made from silicone material.
- the silicone material may be silicone rubber.
- the silicone rubber may be coated or impregnated with an anti-bacterial preparation.
- the material having non-stick properties may additionally or alternatively be made from polytetraflouroethylene.
- the material having non-stick properties may additionally or alternatively be made from perflouoroalkoxy.
- the material having non-stick properties may additionally or alternatively be made from fluorinated ethylene propylene.
- the cleaning part may have a curved edge.
- the curved edge may form a bullnose shaped edge.
- the cleaning part may further comprise a straight edge.
- the straight edge and bullnose shaped edge may be opposite one another.
- the cleaning part may have a rounded tip.
- the cleaning part may take a substantially planar form.
- the cleaning part may comprise two substantially parallel, flat sides with an edge.
- the edge may be tapered. Part of the edge may be curved and another part of the edge may be substantially straight
- the cleaning section and the handle section may be connected to one another by an elongate body.
- the elongate body may comprise a shaft.
- the cleaning apparatus may be adapted to be inserted into a receptacle.
- the receptacle may comprise means for cleaning the apparatus when inserted into and/or removed from the receptacle.
- the means for cleaning may comprise bristles.
- the bristles may be arranged to line at least a part of the receptacle.
- the means for cleaning may additionally or alternatively comprise a means for coating the apparatus with a cleaning preparation.
- the means for coating the apparatus may be activated by the action of inserting or removing the apparatus from the receptacle.
- a method of cleaning a toilet comprising the steps of providing a cleaning apparatus according to the first embodiment and applying the cleaning head to a surface of the toilet to be cleaned.

- Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the holder shown in Fig. 3.
- a toilet cleaning apparatus 1 made from moulded plastics material comprising an elongate shaft 2 having a cleaning part 4 extending from one end of the shaft 2 and a handle part 6 extending from the other end of the shaft 2.
- the shaft 2 is approximately 3 cm wide and 1 cm deep and chosen to be of sufficient length so that a user's hand is a reasonable distance from the cleaning part 4 when in use.
- the cleaning part 4 comprises a blade shaped, resilient, flexible silicone rubber material which is a non-stick material having anti-bacterial properties.
- the silicone rubber may be reinforced with a glass fibre weave and may optionally be coated or impregnated with an anti-bacterial treatment
- the cleaning part 4 comprises two substantially flat, parallel sides and a tapered edge and is fixed to the shaft 2.
- Part of the cleaning part 4 is substantially straight 8 and part of the cleaning head 4 is curved 10, taking the form of a bullnose shaped edge 10.
- the straight edge 8 and the curved edge 10 are opposite one another and are linked by a rounded tip 12.
- the distance between the straight edge 8 and the curved edge 10 is chosen to be approximately 4.5 cm so that the rounded edge 10 extends beyond the adjacent edge of the body 2.
- the projection formed by the curved edge 10 is provided to facilitate cleaning of the underside of the rim of a toilet bowl.
- the rounded tip 12 further facilitates cleaning of a toilet bowl and permits access to difficult places. It also facilitates entry of the cleaning apparatus into a receptacle or holder.
- the handle 6 is made from moulded plastics material and is economically shaped to enable the cleaning apparatus to be easily and comfortably grasped by a user.
- the handle 6 is therefore rounded to conform to the shape of a user's grip.
- a holder 20 is provided into which the cleaning apparatus 1 may be inserted.
- the holder 20 defines an internal space that is shaped and configured to receive the cleaning part 4 and shaft 2 of the cleaning apparatus 1.
- the holder comprises a lip 22 at its open end which provides an abutment against which the base of the handle 6 may be seated when the cleaning apparatus 1 is in the inserted position.
- the opening may further comprise bristles (not shown) that extend into the opening from the inner walls of the holder 20 so as to pro vide a further means of cleaning the cleaning part 4 when inserted or removed from the holder 20.
- the holder 20 may also further comprise a receptacle for disinfectant (not shown) from which may be dispensed disinfectant that coats the cleaning head 4 and shaft 2 when inserted into the holder 20.
- a pair of spaced apart screw holders 24 is provided on the rear side of the holder 20 for mounting to a wall or other straight surface.
- a pair of double sided tape strips 26 is also provided beneath respect screw holders 24 to provide an additional/alternative means for mounting the holder to a wall or other surface.
- the holder 20 and cleaning apparatus 1 is mounted to a wall or toilet cistern or any other straight surface.
- the holder 20 is provided with a base (not shown) to enable it to be free standing in a desired location in the bathroom or WC.
- the toilet cleaning apparatus 1 may then be removed from the holder 20 and used to clean the bowl of a toilet or any other surface.
- the flexible silicone cleaning part 4 permits the apparatus 1 to be used to wipe areas that may previously have been inaccessible to conventional cleaning apparatus.
- the apparatus 1 may be arranged so that the straight edge of the shaft 2 is adjacent the rim of a toilet bowl thereby placing die bullnose edge 10 of the cleaning part 4 into contact with the region of the bowl beneath the rim.
- Movement of the cleaning apparatus 1 around the rim therefore results in cleaning of the circumference of the region of the bowl beneath the rim. If the bullnose edge 10 does not provide adequate contact with an area to be cleaned, the opposite straight edge 8 may then be used to provide a larger contact area.
- the cleaning part 4 may be easily rinsed off with water until free of contaminants and the apparatus 1 may be sheathed back in its holder 20. Sheathing of the cleaning apparatus 1 may involve further cleaning of the cleaning head 4 and shaft 2 as they come into contact with the bristles of the inner walls of the holder 20. Further cleaning may be facilitated by disinfectant which may be dispensed by the holder 20 via the action of the sheathing of the apparatus 1.
