 図1は、本発明のタッチパネルを用いた入力装置を説明するためのブロック図である。図2は、本発明の入力装置を覆う遮光性のカバーを説明する斜視図である。
 図1に示すように、本発明のタッチパネルを用いた入力装置1は、接触式タッチパネル2と、光学式タッチパネル3と、マイコン制御部4とで構成される。
 接触式タッチパネル2は、上基板21(図3参照)と下基板22(図3参照)の間に透明導電膜23(図3参照)を形成したタッチパネルであり、操作者が上基板21に接触して入力を行うものである。上基板あるいは下基板にはガラス板やフィルムなどを用い、透明導電膜にはITO膜などを用いる。
 具体的には、接触式タッチパネル2として、抵抗膜式タッチパネルまたは静電容量式タッチパネルが用いられる。
 抵抗膜式タッチパネルは、ガラス−ガラス構造あるいはフィルム−ガラス構造のタッチパネルがあり、ガラス板あるいはフィルムからなる上基板21と下基板22の片面に透明導電膜23を形成し、かかる透明導電膜23を対向させ、その間にドットスペーサを配置した構造である。操作者が上基板を押下すると、上基板の透明導電膜はドットスペーサのない個所で下基板の透明導電膜と導通する。押下された位置のX軸とY軸の電圧を計測することで座標位置が決定される。
 静電容量式タッチパネルは、ガラスやプラスチックなどの下基板22上に透明導電膜23を形成し、その表面をフィルムやプラスチックなどの上基板21でオーバーコートを施した構造である。操作者がタッチをすると、指先と透明導電膜との間で静電容量が変化するので、その変化を利用して座標位置の検出を行う。
 光学式タッチパネル3は、X軸およびY軸上に並べて設けた複数個の発光素子31、33(図3参照)と、かかる発光素子に対向して設けた複数個の受光素子32、34(図3参照)とで形成されるタッチパネルであり、接触式タッチパネル2の動作選択領域上に置かれた操作者の手などの操作物の形態の認識や、操作者の指などの操作物の座標位置の検出を行うものである。なお、詳しくは図3で詳細に説明する。
 マイコン制御部4は、接触式タッチパネル2と光学式タッチパネル3で生成された信号を受信したり、接触式タッチパネル2と光学式タッチパネル3で検出した座標信号を表示パネル5のパネルサイズの座標信号へと変換したり、座標信号に対応するカーソルを表示パネル5上で移動させるといった演算機能やデータ処理機能を有する制御部である。
 表示パネル5とは、複数の表示モードとそれを制御するカーソルを表示する液晶や有機ELなどのディスプレイであり、タッチパネルを用いた入力装置1とは離れた位置に設置される。
 次に、図2に本発明のタッチパネルを用いた入力装置を覆う遮光性カバーの一例を示す。
 遮光性カバー6は、接触式タッチパネル2と光学式タッチパネル3を覆い、その一辺に開口部6bを設けて形成され、太陽光などの外部光の入射による誤動作を防ぐものである。
 図に示すように、支持台6aにタッチパネル式の入力装置1を配置し、接触式タッチパネル2と光学式タッチパネル3が位置する個所をドーム状に囲う。開口部6bは、操作者の手や指などの操作物を入れて操作を行う部分であり、操作性を確保するために一定の高さを要する。
 更に、図3を用いて本発明のタッチパネルを用いた入力装置1の具体的な構造について説明する。図3(A)は本発明の入力装置1の上面図であり、図3(B)はその断面図であり、図3(C)は光学式タッチパネルの光の照射範囲を表した図である。なお、ここでは接触式タッチパネルとして抵抗膜式タッチパネルを用いる場合を例に説明する。
 図3(A)に示すように、接触式タッチパネル2は、上面を開口した枠状の筐体7の中に設けられる。筐体7は、接触式タッチパネル2を支持し、タッチパネルを外力より保護し、光学式タッチパネル3の発光素子31、33および受光素子32、34を設置する支持台としての役割がある。
 次に、本願の特徴である光学式タッチパネル3は、接触式タッチパネルのタッチされる動作選択領域25のX軸およびY軸の周辺に並べて設けた複数個の発光素子31、33と、発光素子に対向して設けた複数個の受光素子32、34とで形成される。尚、図に示すように斜線で示した部分が動作選択領域25である。
 X軸の発光素子31およびY軸の発光素子33は、動作選択領域25の周辺に並べて設けられる。尚、検出される座標の分解能は発光素子の素子数に比例して高くなる。
 X軸の受光素子32およびY軸の受光素子34は、動作選択領域25の周辺で、発光素子に対向して設けられる。発光素子31、33からの赤外線光は受光素子に向けて直線的に照射される。
 X軸およびY軸の発光素子31、33と受光素子32、34とは、一定間隔に並べられており、具体的には、指の横幅よりも狭い間隔で配置され、8インチの光学式タッチパネルではX軸の発光素子31および受光素子32の数は22個であり、Y軸の発光素子33および受光素子34の数は14個である。なお、図面上は見やすくするために素子数を少なく描いている。
 また、各発光素子および各受光素子の設置には強度が必要となるため、筐体7に設けると良い。
 図3(B)の断面図は、図3(A)のa−a線で示す部分に対応している。図に示すように、接触式タッチパネル2として、ガラス−ガラス構造あるいはフィルム−ガラス構造の抵抗膜式タッチパネルを用いる。
 接触式タッチパネル2には、上基板21と下基板22の片面にITO膜23が形成され、フォトエッチングによりパターンニングした透明電極や引き出し電極、外部取り出し電極(図示せず)が形成される。そして、上基板21と下基板22の透明電極を対向するように重ね合わせ、基板の周端部に設けた接着層24で上下基板を貼着する。なお、上下基板の間隔を保持するために、一方のガラス基板に図示しないドットスペーサが多数配設されている。
 接触式タッチパネル2のタッチされる動作選択領域の任意の点を指またはペン等で押圧操作すると、その点において上基板の透明電極と下基板の透明電極とが接触してオン状態となる。このオン信号が各引き出し電極、外部取り出し電極を介してマイコン制御部4へと送られ、オン信号に対応する処理が行われる。
 なお、押圧操作を止めると上基板の透明電極と下基板の透明電極とが離れてオフ状態となり、かかるオン信号に対応する処理は終了する。
 光学式タッチパネル3は、複数個のX軸およびY軸の発光素子31、33と各発光素子に対向して設けた複数個のX軸およびY軸の受光素子32、34とが、接触式タッチパネル2の動作選択領域25の周辺で、強度のある筐体7側に接着剤で固定されている。発光素子31、33には発光ダイオードを用い、受光素子32、34にはフォトトランジスタを用いる。
 光学式タッチパネル3は、発光素子31、33が点灯すると、対向する受光素子32、34がオンとなる性質を利用している。動作選択領域25上に手、指またはペン等の操作物を置いたとき、その部分の照射光は遮られるために、受光素子32、34はオフのままである。この受光素子のオフ信号を検出し、操作物の形態や座標位置を検出する。
 具体的には、X軸の受光素子32のオフ信号と、Y軸の受光素子34のオフ信号により操作物のある座標位置を検出する。この座標信号をマイコン制御部4へと送り、表示パネル5にカーソルを表示できる。
 また、複数本の指を広げたり、くっつけたりした形状で動作選択領域25上に置いた場合には、X軸あるいはY軸の少なくとも一方からの照射光が発光素子から照射されるので、対向する受光素子でオフ信号の数を検出し、マイコン制御部4でその操作物の形態を区別する。マイコン制御部4で形態認識信号を生成して、複数の表示モードの中から1つを選択して表示パネルに表示させることができる。
 本発明では上述した2種類の検出を1つの光学式タッチパネル3に持たせることが特徴である。
 図3(C)は、光学式タッチパネル3の発光素子31、33から赤外線光が照射できる範囲を示している。図に示すように、動作選択領域25の外周にX軸およびY軸の発光素子31、33が設置されているので、接触式タッチパネル2のタッチされる動作選択領域25には赤外線光が照射されることがわかる。
 次に、図4~図5を用いて、光学式タッチパネルの検出方法を説明する。図4(A)~図4(B)は、光学式タッチパネルによる指などの操作物の座標位置を検出する方法を説明する図である。図5(A)~図5(D)は、光学式タッチパネルによる手などの操作物の形態を認識する方法を説明する図である。

 図4(A)に示すように、動作選択領域上に、操作者の指8を1本置いた場合には、X軸およびY軸の発光素子31、33から光が照射され、指がある部分は照射光が遮られるために対向するX軸およびY軸の受光素子32、34ではオフ信号が検出される。
 具体的には、例えば図4(B)に示すように、点で示した位置に指などの操作物8を置いた場合には、座標(6,5)が検出される。
 また、受光素子では、後述する図5(B)に示すような信号の検出が行われる。図中の数値は、受光素子の配置に対応して検出された信号値を示している。「1」はオン信号(通過した信号)であり、「0」はオフ信号(遮断された信号)である。これを利用して、操作物の形態を区別することができる。
 具体的には、図5(A)あるいは図5(C)に示すように、手などの操作物8を広げて動作選択領域上に置くことで、発光素子の照射光を部分的に遮断する。ここでは、X軸の発光素子31からのみ、照射して形態を認識する場合を示す。
 これにより、対向する受光素子、すなわちX軸の受光素子32で検出したオフ信号を区別して指などの本数を検出することができる。
 図5(B)には、図5(A)のX軸の各受光素子で検出したオン・オフ信号を示す。操作者は、5本の指がくっつかないように広げて光を遮断しているため、座標軸の原点(ここでは動作選択領域の左下の位置を原点とする)側より、「1、1、0、1、0、1、0、1、0、1、0、1」の信号が検出される。
 一方、図5(C)には、操作者が薬指と中指をくっつけて光を遮断している状態を示す。この場合には、図5(D)に示すように、原点側より「1、1、0、1、0、0、1、1、0、1、0、1」の信号が検出される。
 図5(A)と図5(C)の2つのケースでは、ともにオフ信号(「0」)が5つであるが、図からも明らかなように操作者の手などの操作物8の形態は明らかに異なる。すなわち、検出したオフ信号(「0」)の総数を単純に操作物の本数として識別すると、操作者の意思により隣り合う操作物8を近接させた場合(図5(C)参照)と混同し、正確な操作物8の形態を識別できない。
 そこで、オフ信号(「0」)の数に関係なく、オン信号(「1」)とオン信号(「1」)の間にオフ信号(「0」)がある場合を1本の指と識別することで、操作物を近接させた場合(図5(C)参照)を区別できる。
 これにより、図5(A)に示す形態の場合には、「1、0、1」のパターンが全部で5つあるので5本指と認識でき、図5(C)に示す形態の場合には、「1、0、1」あるいは「1、0、0、1」のパターンが全部で4つあるので4本指と認識できる。なお、この認識はマイコン制御部4で行われる。
 その後、上述のように指の本数はマイコン制御部4で識別され、形態認識信号が生成される。形態認識信号とは、指の本数ごとに各表示モードが対応し、識別された本数の表示モードを選択して表示パネルの表示を制御する信号である。
 次に、図6を用いて本発明のタッチパネルを用いた入力装置の入力方法について説明する。
 タッチパネルを用いた入力装置1の電源をオンにすると、入力装置と離れた位置に設けた表示パネル5に初期設定画面が表示される(ステップS1)。
 そして、光学式タッチパネル3のX軸あるいはY軸の発光素子31、33の少なくとも一方からの光が、動作選択領域25上に置かれた手などの操作物8に遮られ、かかる発光素子に対向して設置された受光素子32、34でオン信号・オフ信号を検出し、マイコン制御部4で操作物8の形態を区別してその形態を認識する(ステップS2)。
 なお、この際に、一定間隔で複数回の照射を行い、その全ての検出値が一致している場合にのみ、操作物8の形態を認識する。具体的には、ステップS2の処理を1秒間隔で3回連続して行う。これにより、操作者の意思により画面モードの選択が行われていることを認識でき、誤って手などの操作物や洋服の袖などが光学式タッチパネル上に置かれた場合を区別できる。
 そして、マイコン制御部4からの形態認識信号により、表示パネル5に表示される複数の表示モードの中から1つを選択する(ステップS3)。
 その後、かかる表示モードに切り替えられて、表示パネル5に表示される(ステップS4)。
 そして、表示された表示モードの中で、動作選択領域25上を移動させる指などの操作物8の位置を光学式タッチパネル3の受光素子32、34で検出してマイコン制御部4に入力し、操作物8の座標を求めて光学式タッチパネル座標信号を生成する。マイコン制御部4はかかる座標の座標信号を表示パネル5に伝えて、カーソルを座標信号に従って表示パネル5上の動作選択領域で移動させる(ステップS5)。
 そして、選択した動作選択領域のカーソルがある位置で接触式タッチパネル2に接触する。これによりマイコン制御部4は接触式タッチパネル座標信号を検出し、カーソルを接触式タッチパネル座標信号に対応する位置に移動させると共に、マイコン制御部4から確定信号を出力し、選択された表示モードの操作を行う(ステップS6)。
 そして、他の表示モードへ切り替える場合には、現在の表示モードを終了してステップS1の初期設定画面を表示させる初期設定画面ボタンを選択する(ステップS7)。その後、マイコン制御部4によりステップS1の処理へと戻り、操作者は手などの操作物8を認識させる。なお、ステップS7の代わりに、ステップS6の後に一定時間何も操作がされない場合には直接ステップS1へと戻るようにしても良い。
 なお、上述の如く本発明の入力装置1と表示パネル5とは、両者を異なるサイズにすることができる。しかし、表示パネル5のサイズを入力装置1のサイズより大型にする場合には、光学式タッチパネル3で検出した光学式タッチパネル座標信号を表示パネル5のサイズに合わせて拡大するため、座標軸の目盛りが大きくなるためにカーソルの移動が粗くなる。このため、表示パネル5上の選択した動作選択領域のカーソルのある位置にズレが生ずる場合がある。
 ところが、抵抗膜式タッチパネル2では動作選択領域25の全面に透明電極が形成されているために、動作選択領域25内の座標を精度良く検出できる。
 このカーソル移動の粗さによる表示パネル上の選択した動作選択領域のカーソルのある位置のズレを解消するために、上述のステップS6において、抵抗膜式タッチパネル座標信号に対応する位置へカーソルを修正する処理が必要となる。
 これにより、表示パネル5を入力装置1のサイズより大型化にしても、座標信号に追従してカーソルを表示させることができる。
 ここで、本発明のタッチパネルを用いた入力装置をカーナビに利用する場合の実施例を説明する。
 図7は、カーナビとして車両に設置した一例を示した図である。図8は、カーナビに用いた場合の入力方法を説明するフロー図である。図9は、カーナビの各表示モードの画像の一例である。ここでは、操作物の認識本数が1本の場合にはナビモード、2本の場合には空調設定モード、3本の場合にはオーディオモード、4本の場合には車外カメラモード、5本の場合にはテレビモードがそれぞれ選択されるものとする。
 図7に示すように、カーナビとして用いた場合は、操作者の手元付近にタッチパネルを用いた入力装置1が設置され、太陽光などの外部光の入射を防ぐために、遮光性のカバー6で覆われている。具体的には、センターコンソールに配置すると、操作者は操作の前に配置個所を確認する作業を省略でき、また、手の移動も少ない分、操作性も向上する。
 表示パネル5は、操作者が視線を大きく移動することなく確認できる位置であればよく、具体的にはインストルメント・パネルに配置する。
 図8に示すように、操作者は車を起動させると入力装置1の電源はオンとなり、表示パネル5に初期設定画面が表示される(ステップS10)。
 そして、操作者は表示させる表示モードを選択するために、手などの操作物8で所望の形態を作り、接触式タッチパネル2の動作選択領域25上に置いて認識させる。光学式タッチパネル3はX軸あるいはY軸の発光素子の少なくとも一方から照射し、かかる発光素子に対向して設けた受光素子でオン信号あるいはオフ信号を検出し、マイコン制御部4で操作物8の形態を区別して認識し、その形態認識信号を生成する(ステップS20)。
 なお、この際に、ステップS20を1秒間隔で3回連続して行い、全ての検出値が一致していることを確認することで、誤操作との識別を行う。
 具体的には、操作者は1本指を立て動作選択領域上に置いた場合には認識本数が1本と認識され、2本指を立てて置いた場合には認識本数が2本、3本指を立てて置いた場合には認識本数が3本と、それぞれ区別されて認識される。ここで、各認識本数における処理を説明する。
 (1本指を立てた場合)
 ステップS20の本数認識の処理により、認識本数が1本と認識される(ステップS30)。
 マイコン制御部4からの形態認識信号により複数の画面モードの中から1つが選択され、表示パネル5に表示される(ステップS40)。
 ここでは、1本の場合の形態認識信号が生成されるため、ナビモードが選択されて表示される。
 その後は、光学式タッチパネル3は、動作選択領域25上を移動させる指などの操作物8の位置を検出してマイコン制御部4に入力し、操作物8の座標を求め、光学式タッチパネル座標信号を生成して表示パネル5に伝える。そして、その座標信号に従って表示パネル5上をカーソル9が移動し、動作の選択を行う(ステップS50)。
 具体的には、図9(A)に示すように、操作者が動作選択領域25上で指示する座標位置を検出し、その光学式タッチパネル座標信号に従って表示パネル5のナビ画面上にカーソル9を表示させる。これにより、操作者は、地図上でカーソル9を移動させて画面を上下左右に移動させることや、表示画面の拡大あるいは縮小や目的地の検索などの各選択メニューから動作させたい選択領域にカーソル9を移動させて、その選択を行うことができる。なお、ここでは表示画面の拡大を行うものとする。
 そして、操作者は選択した動作選択領域にカーソル9がある状態で接触式タッチパネル2に接触し、接触式タッチパネル座標信号を検出してカーソルをかかる接触式タッチパネル座標信号に対応する位置に移動させるとともに、マイコン制御部4から確定信号を出力して、選択された動作を行う(ステップS60)。
 具体的には、操作者は表示画面を拡大させたい場合には、図9(A)に示すように、動作選択領域25上を指で移動し、表示パネル上の拡大ボタンがある領域までカーソル9を移動し、選択を行う。そして、拡大ボタン上にカーソル9がある状態で接触式タッチパネル2に接触し、カーソルを接触式タッチパネル座標信号に対応する拡大ボタン上の位置に移動させるとともに拡大ボタンの処理を確定させると、画面が拡大される。
 最後に、他の表示モードに切り替える場合には、表示パネル上の初期設定画面へと戻る初期画面ボタンをカーソル9で選択し、接触式タッチパネルに接触して確定する(ステップS70)。その後、処理はステップS10へ戻るため、操作者は指で形態を作り認識させればよい。
 なお、初期設定画面へと戻るボタンで終了の指示を行う代わりに、ステップS60の後に一定時間何も操作がされない場合には直接ステップS10へ戻るようにしたり、操作者が指で形態を作って一定時間その形態をマイコン制御部に認識させることでステップS10が行われるようにしても良い。
 (2本指を立てた場合)
 なお、各処理は上述の1本指を立てた場合と同様であるので、具体的な処理の流れを以下に説明する。
 ステップS20の本数認識の処理により2本と認識され(ステップS31)、表示パネル5には空調設定画面が表示される(ステップS41)。

 ステップS20の本数認識の処理により3本と認識され(ステップS32)、表示パネル5にはオーディオ画面が表示される(ステップS42)。
 操作者は、1曲スキップさせたい場合には、図9(C)に示すように、動作選択領域25上を指8で移動させてスキップボタンの領域にカーソル9を移動して選択を行い(ステップS50)、カーソル9がスキップボタン上にある状態で接触タッチパネル2に1回接触して確定する(ステップS60)。
 その後、初期設定画面へと戻る初期画面ボタンにタッチして、ステップS10へと戻る(ステップS70)。
 (4本指を立てた場合)
 なお、2本指の場合と同様に、具体的な処理の流れを以下に説明する。
 ステップS20の本数認識の処理により4本と認識され(ステップS33)、表示パネル5には車外カメラ画面が表示される(ステップS43)。
 操作者は、リアカメラに切り替えたい場合には、図示は省略するが、動作選択領域25上を指8で移動させてリアカメラ切替ボタンの領域にカーソル9を移動して選択を行い(ステップS50)、カーソル9がリアカメラ切替ボタン上にある状態で接触タッチパネル2に1回接触して確定する(ステップS60)。
