Abstract

A field crop spray apparatus (1) comprises a carrier, at least one frame present at the bottom of the carrier and connected thereto, an elongated blade (3, 5) connected to the frame and running parallel to the carrier, and a sprayer (7). The field crop spray apparatus is intended to be mounted on an agricultural spray apparatus where the carrier extends at right angles to the direction of movement of the agricultural sprayer. The blade further includes extendible or folded-out wing tips (23) at each transverse end, which tips in collapsed or folded out state are pointing downwards during the spraying process so as to form a downward directed air curtain or form an emission screen in order to prevent spray liquid from being blown away sideways.

Description

Field crop spray apparatus for spraying crops with liquids
DESCRIPTION: Field of the invention. The invention relates to a field crop spray apparatus for spraying crops with liquids, the apparatus comprising an elongated carrier, a plurality of frames connected to the carrier and present at the bottom thereof, an elongated blade connected to the frames and running parallel to the carrier, and sprayers connected to the blade, which field crop spray apparatus is intended to be coupled to an agricultural tractor while the carrier extends at right angles to the direction of movement of the agricultural tractor.
State of the art.
A field crop spray apparatus of this kind is known from EP-A-1 083 789. In this known field crop spray apparatus frames present between the carrier and the blade are made of an elastic material. Owing to undulations of the ground the carrier moves up and down during the use of the field crop spray apparatus. During a down movement of the carrier the blade meets with more resistance from the crop so that the f ames spring inwardly. As a result, the sprayers continue to maintain their distance from the crop, so that the liquid is distributed uniformly over the crop.
Summary of the invention.
It is an object of the invention to improve the known field crop spray apparatus. To this end the field crop spray apparatus according to the invention is
characterised in that the blade has foldable wing tips at each transverse end, which wing tips in folded out or extended state are pointing downwards during the spraying operation so as to create an air curtain or emission screen directed downwards during movement in order to avoid spray liquid being blown away sideways.
An embodiment of the field crop spray apparatus according to the invention is characterised in that each wing tip comprises a fan which can be folded in and folded out and in a folded out or extended state during the spraying operation are pointing downwards and transversely to the longitudinal direction of the blade in order to avoid spray liquid being blown away sideways. Brief description of the drawings.
The invention will be elucidated more fully below based on an example of embodiment of the spray apparatus according to the invention while reference is made to the appended drawing figures, in which:
Fig. 1 gives a perspective view seen diagonally from the top of an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention; and
Fig. 2 gives a cross-sectional view of the apparatus while being moved over a crop. Detailed description of the drawings.
Fig. 1 gives a perspective view of an embodiment of the field crop spray apparatus according to the invention for hooded spraying of crops . The field crop spray apparatus 1 comprises an upper air guiding hood 3 and a lower air guiding hood 5 present at a distance from the upper air guiding hood. Nozzles 7 attached to supports 9 are present between the two air guiding hoods. The supports provide the connection between the two air guiding hoods 3 and 5 and carry the nozzles. Flexible flaps if any may be attached to the lower ends of the air guiding hoods.
The field crop spray apparatus 1 further includes fastening means 11 for fastening the apparatus to a carrier arm which can be coupled to an agricultural tractor. The fastening means are hingeably connected to the upper air guiding hood 3.
Fig. 2 gives a cross-sectional view of the apparatus when moved over a crop. The air guiding hoods 3, 5 are suspended over or right in the tops of the crop 13. During the ride the crop is as it were drawn open by the wind and/or by the contact with the apparatus, so that the spraying agent 15 is distributed among the crop. The rear side of the field crop spray apparatus provides a loss-free sealing by the air flow 17 which continues to be directed at the sprayed crop. This presses the vapours into the crop so that there is mention of proper penetration into the crop and a very high reduction of emission of the spraying agent. Emission which otherwise would get lost as a result of drift and evaporation and rolling down of the spraying agent and would consequently be a burdening of the environment.
The pressure at which the mixture of air and spraying agent 15 ends up in the crop 13 depends on the shape of the air guiding hoods and the speed at which the apparatus is moved (4 - 20 km h). By designing the right shape of the rear side of the air guiding hoods and applying possible other techniques, like for example holes 19 present in the upper hood, or boundary layer suction or coating with a dirt and water repellent agent, a turbulent wake is avoided, so that the laminar air flow 21 continues to follow the shape of the upper air guiding hood. This air flow 21 prevents fine droplets and vapours of spraying agent from ending up in the environment so that they are pressed into the crop once again. This effect is obtained by having as it were a blanket of air descend on the crop.
When the field crop spray apparatus is moved over the crop the nozzles 7 are installed at a 30 degree angle to the vertical. The distance from the nozzles 7 to the crop 13 is variable. Both the angle and the distance can be adjusted for obtaining the best result. The air guiding hoods 3, 5 are suspended in a free-hinging manner and may be limited by stops. The contact of the lower air guiding hood 5 and the crop and the wind determine the position of the apparatus. The apparatus may also be provided with a mechanically adjustable hood.
The blade (air guiding hoods 3 and 5) has a telescopic wing tip 23 at each transverse end, which wing tip in folded out state is pointing downwards at right angles to the blade during the spraying process, so as to form a downward-directed air curtain or an emission screen while the apparatus is moved, so that spray liquid is prevented from being blown away sideways.
Albeit the invention has been described in the foregoing with reference to the drawings, it should be pointed out that the invention is not by any manner or means restricted to the embodiments shown in the drawings. The invention also extends over any embodiment deviating from the embodiment shown in the drawing figures within the spirit and scope defined by the claims.
