Abstract

The application relates to a communication system which provides a means of monitoring signalling traffic of a WLAN hotspot operator for enabling location -based services to mobile WLAN device which roams between a plurality of access points of the same operator. Many communication systems provide the location by signal triangulation or satellite -based techniques. The application however relates to determining the location of a mobile WLAN device by determining the location of the WLAN access point. This is achieved by a monitoring system (200) which is arranged to collect data generated by signalling traffic such as connections requests and/or assignment of an IP address to the roaming device. The monitoring system (200) processes the received signalling traffic to determine appropriate information, for example, information which enables the identification of the device and/or the location of the wireless network access point. The monitoring systems data store (210) contains the device Mac address, a time stamp recording when traffic was intercepted from the device and/or alternative the time the IP address of the device was allocated by the access point, the access point's IP address and a reference number for the relevant DSLAM data base. By providing a suitable interface to the monitoring system (220), and processing the location data retrieved, the location of a device can be queried by a web server (302) when it receives a service request from one of the WLAN devices.
