  • the blank 10 is provided with a first bottom wall panel 11 , a second bottom wall panel 12, side wall panels 13 and a top wall panel 14 These panels 11 , 12, 13, 14 are connected together in series by fold lines 15 to 18. By folding these panels 11 to 14, the blank 10 is erected into a carton shown in Fig. 2.

  • a plurality of locking tabs 19 are struck from the first bottom wall panel 11 and are hingedly connected to the first bottom wall panel 11 by folding lines 19a.

  • the retaining tabs 20 define locking apertures in the second bottom wall panel 12. The locking apertures are designed for receiving the locking tabs 19 so that so received locking tabs 19 are retained in the locking apertures engaged by the retaining tabs 20 and thereby the first and second bottom wall panels 11 and 12 are secured together.
  • An anchoring flap 21 is hingedly connected to the opposite end edges of each side wall panel 13 by the fold lines 22.

  • Recesses 33 each defined by a smooth arched edge are formed along the opposite end edges of the top wall panel 14.
  • Each recess 33 extends from the respective end edge toward the handle opening 30.
  • a tear strip or zipper 40 defined by two substantially parallel tear lines 41 is formed next to one of the recesses 33.
  • Each tear line 41 may be a perforation, a severance line, a series of slits or cut lines or other wise a weakened line.
  • Each tear line 41 is composed of a series of V-shaped slits. The end slits are straight.
  • the second end slits 41 b may also be V- shaped; however, it is angled in the reverse direction with respect to the third slits 41 a and up.
  • the second slits 41 b prevent tearing from developing in an undesired direction outward of the tear strip 40 and facilitate tearing development in the right direction toward the next adjacent slits 41 a.
  • the tear strip 40 is disposed at an angle with respect to the adjacent side edge of the top wall panel 14 defined by the fold line 17 and extends substantially toward the fold line 17. By this means, the distance or space between the tear strip 40 and the handle opening 30 is be maintained.
  • a tear initiation tab 42 is attached to the outer end of the tear strip 40 to facilitate removal (or otherwise partial severance) of the tear strip 40 from the top wall panel 14.
  • the side wall panels 13 are folded toward the group of cans C to take substantially vertical positions in which the side wall panels 13 are in substantial contact with the side surfaces of the cans C.
  • the first and second bottom wall panels 11 , 12 are also folded 90 degrees along the fold lines 15, 18 with respect to the side wall panels 13 at almost the same time as the side wall panels 13 are folded.
  • the bottom wall panels 11 , 12 are brought into abutment on the bottoms of the cans C.
  • the first bottom wall panel 11 overlaps in part with the second bottom wall panel 12.
  • the first bottom wall panel 11 is in face contacting arrangement with the outside surface of the second bottom wall panel 12.

  • finger or fingers are inserted into the handle opening 30, by which finger tabs 31 are thrust aside into inwardly folded positions. Then, the package is lifted by the handle opening 30 while one of the recesses 33 is engaged by another or other fingers. The other fingers may engage one of the side wall panels 13 instead of engaging with the recess 33.
  • the tear initiation tab 42 is held and pulled upward. By this means, tearing of the tear strip 40 is initiated.
  • the tear starts from both the sides of the tear initiation tab 42 and develops to the second end slit 41 b and then to the other slits 41 a continuously till the tear strip 40 is detached or severed substantially, if not completely, from the top wall panel 14.
  • the severance of the tear strip 40 loosens the carton which allows the cans to be removed at least through its open end from where the tear strip 40 has been severed.
  • the recess 33 is at the position spaced apart from the tear strip 40 so that the force applied to the carton when the carton is lifted is prevented from directly affecting the tear strip 40. Therefore, undesired tear of along the tear strip 40 can be avoided.
  • the recesses 33 are formed on the opposite sides of the handle opening 30. As such, the chance in which the tear strip 40 is carelessly engaged by finger or fingers can be effectively avoided.
  • the tear strip 40 is disposed at an angle with respect to the side edges of the top wall panel 14 and thereby maintains a substantial distance from the handle opening 30. As a result, the portion around the handle opening 30 is not weakened.
  • FIG. 3 illustrates a second embodiment of the invention in which two tear strips 40 are provided in the top wall panel 14.
  • Each tear strip 14 emanates from a position offset from the mid point along the respective end edge of the top wall panel 14 and extends at an angle toward the adjacent side edge of the top wall panel along a pathway substantially spaced from the handle opening 30.
  • the present invention is not limited to cartons provided with one or two tear strips but include cartons having more than two tear strips 40 along an end edge of any one of the primary wall panels of a tubular carton, such as a top wall panel, a side wall panel or a bottom wall panel.
  • fold line does not necessary meaning a fold line having a unitary structure within the limitation of the present invention.
  • a fold line may be a line formed, for example, of a perforation, a score line causing decreased thickness due to press embossing or a combination thereof.
  • the present invention can be applied to a carton having various arrangements of articles within the limitation of the present invention.

Abstract

L'invention porte sur un carton qui comprend une structure tubulaire à extrémité ouverte.
