Definitions

  • the present invention relates to tanks for storage and transportation of fluids under pressure such as hydrocarbons and low temperature liquefied natural gas. Background of the invention
  • Pressure vessels may theoretically be almost any shape, but shapes made of sections of spheres, cylinders, and cones are usually employed.
  • a common design is a cylinder with end caps called heads. Head shapes are frequently either hemispherical or dished (torispherical).
  • a sphere would be the optimal shape of a pressure vessel with regards to containing pressure loads.
  • a spherical shape is difficult to manufacture, therefore expensive, and in the case of transportation not effective for utilisation of available volume of a transportation vessel.
  • WO 2006/001711 A2 discloses prismatic tanks made up of a shell in the form of a sandwich structure comprising two surface sheet layers of metal or a material with similar properties and a core between the surface sheets transferring loads between the sheets, comprising of a material or a set of ribs or webs extending between the two sheets, anchored by perpendicular horizontal tension stays. This is the current technology for tanks with a sandwich construction.
  • This structure provides a double, liquid tight, barrier and affords the possibility of detecting gas in between the two surface sheets as well as allowing pressure testing of the void between the sheets.
  • This provides enhanced safety, but the major advantage of the sandwich construction is that it is structurally highly efficient.
