Definitions

  • Example embodiments relate to storage accessories for use with motorcycles.
  • Storage accessories are well known and widely used in the motorcycle industry, all of which provide only limited and specific advantages and purposes, such as storage, safety, convenience or security. That is, existing storage accessories suffer inherent trade-offs and disadvantages in their applications.
  • motorcycle storage accessories provide for specific advantages of convenience in overall use and access to its contents, such as those flat and/or wallet- shaped accessories that are readily available for strapping onto various parts of the motorcycle. Although the effects of wind resistance and fuel consumption of such storage accessories are minor as compared to the fixed-form and/or hard-case storage accessories, they only provide the driver with very limited useable storage area and limited types of storable contents. Furthermore, because the flat and/or wallet-shaped storage accessories are typically strapped onto the motorcycle frame, seat or under the seat of the motorcycle, they may not provide for safe and convenient use and access of its contents, especially while the driver is seated on and/or operating the motorcycle.
  • the various forms of luggage having inherent trade-offs of advantageous features, such as those described above, may also share several common problems, including the reduction in passenger capacity after installation of the luggage in or about the proximity of the rear wheel/seat, the lack of convenient compartments to divide and organize contents of the luggage, the inability of the driver and passengers to access contents of the luggage while the motorcycle is in operation, the lack of portability of either the empty luggage or the combined luggage and contents, and the increase in wind resistance and thereby increase in fuel consumption of the motorcycle.

Description

STORAGE ACCESSORY FOR MOTORCYCLE
TECHNICAL FIELD
Example embodiments relate to storage accessories for use with motorcycles.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Storage accessories are well known and widely used in the motorcycle industry, all of which provide only limited and specific advantages and purposes, such as storage, safety, convenience or security. That is, existing storage accessories suffer inherent trade-offs and disadvantages in their applications.
For example, while various forms of motorcycle storage accessories provide for safety and security of its contents, such as those fixed-form and/or hard-case storage containers available for attachment to the rear section of the motorcycle seat or frame, they will not provide the driver with convenient access to its contents while the driver is in the seated position, and especially while the driver is seated and operating the motorcycle. Furthermore, such fixed-form and/or hard-case storage containers will be inherently bulky and/or heavy, and inevitably create undesirable increases in wind resistance and fuel consumption while the motorcycle is in operation. Furthermore, such fixed-form and/or hard-case storage containers are unable to readily change in shape and/or size so as to adapt to its contents, or lack of contents, therein. Furthermore, such fixed-form and/or hard-case storage containers cannot be readily detached and reattached from the motorcycle after its initial installation, and thereby not allowing the driver to removably transport the fixed-form and/or hard-case storage container and its contents away from the motorcycle. Furthermore, the installation location of such fixed-form and/or hard-case storage containers in or about the rear section of the motorcycle will inevitably result in a reduction of passenger capacity on the motorcycle. The problems of passenger capacity reduction and fixed storage capacity are particularly undesirable to users in developing countries since motorcycles in these countries are relied upon to provide fast, efficient and low cost transportation for not only transporting items but also for accommodating more than just the driver of the motorcycle. Other forms of motorcycle storage accessories provide for specific advantages of convenience in overall use and access to its contents, such as those flat and/or wallet- shaped accessories that are readily available for strapping onto various parts of the motorcycle.
Still there are other forms of motorcycle storage accessories with specific advantages of ample storage space and flexibility of its shape relative to its contents, such as baskets fixably installed above the front wheel and in front of the steering handle of the motorcycle. Although such forms of storage luggage provide storage capacity, the location of such storage luggage may inherently affect the safe operation of the motorcycle. That is, any uneven distribution of weight above the front wheel due to the contents of the luggage, or shifting in location of the contents, may result in unsafe turning and/or braking of the motorcycle. Furthermore, unsafe operation of the motorcycle may result in the event that some of the luggage contents become separated from the luggage container while the motorcycle is in operation. Furthermore, such forms of luggage are not convenient for the driver to access its contents, especially while the driver is seated on or operating the motorcycle. Furthermore, the location of such forms of luggage will directly increase the wind resistance of the overall motorcycle and thereby cause increases in fuel consumption.
The various forms of luggage having inherent trade-offs of advantageous features, such as those described above, may also share several common problems, including the reduction in passenger capacity after installation of the luggage in or about the proximity of the rear wheel/seat, the lack of convenient compartments to divide and organize contents of the luggage, the inability of the driver and passengers to access contents of the luggage while the motorcycle is in operation, the lack of portability of either the empty luggage or the combined luggage and contents, and the increase in wind resistance and thereby increase in fuel consumption of the motorcycle.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Figures 1-3 depict an example embodiment of a storage accessory 100 of the present invention comprising a main central section 1 10, a main right section 120, a main left section 130, and a main attachment means 140. Figure 4 depicts a side view of an example embodiment of the storage accessory 100 installed on a motorcycle. As show in the top view of Figure 5, each of the main central section 1 10, main right section 120 and main left section 130 provide for one or more independent storage areas for use in storing one or more items by the user. Access to the contents stored in one or more of the main central section 110, main right section 120 and/or main left section 130 may be securely lockable at the option of the user.
The main central section 1 10 may be divisible into two storage areas, namely the front central section 1 1 OA and the back central section HOB, in example embodiments. The front central section 1 1 OA may be for use in storing readily accessible small items, such as coins, sunglasses, keys and the like. It is to be understood by persons ordinarily skilled in the art that the central dividing wall 11 IB may be a permanently attached dividing wall, in which case the main central section 1 10 is permanently divided into the front central section 1 1 OA and the back central section HOB, or one in which the user may removably attach one or both attachment ends of the central dividing wall 1 1 IB, in which case the main central section 1 10 may be configurable at the option of the user to be either one main central compartment or two compartments comprising the front central section 11 OA and the back central section HOB. In the latter embodiment, the attachment means of the one or both removably attachable ends of the central dividing wall 1 1 IB may be one or more of a Velcro, zipper, button, clip, snap-on clip and/or any other means of attaching.
In one example embodiment, the main central section 1 10, the main right section 120, the main left section 130 and the attachment means 140 may be removably attachable from the storage accessory 100, enabling a user with the option to remove and/or transport the main central section 1 10, the main right section 120, the main left section 130, and/or the attachment means 140 from the storage accessory 100 and/or from one another. The user may then be empowered with the flexibility to transport away from the storage accessory 100, in either its uninstalled position and/or installed to a motorcycle, either the main central section 1 10 only, the main right section 120 only, the main left section 130 only, the main central section 110 and the main right section 120 only, the main central section 1 10 and the main left section 130 only, the main right section 120 and the main left section 130 only, or a combination of the main central section 110, the main right section 120 and the main left section 130. Advantages of allowing the user with the flexibility of removing and/or transporting one or more of the main central section 110, the main right section 120 and/or the main left section 130 become evident in situations where the user utilizes only some of the storage compartments and/or the user does not wish to carry the entire storage accessory 100.
The main central section 110, in an example embodiment shown in Figures 2 and 3, comprises a central section right side wall 116, a central section left side wall 1 17, a central section front wall 111A, a central section dividing wall 11 IB, a central section angular bottom wall 112, a central section main bottom wall 1 13 and a central section back wall 114. It is to be understood by persons ordinarily skilled in the art that a single adaptable central section main bottom wall 113 may be used to perform the functions of the central section angular bottom wall 112 and the central section main bottom wall 1 13. The exterior of the main central section 110 may be of any number of shapes, but preferably one which will allow appropriate attachment to the main right section 120 and/or main left section 130 in removably attachable embodiments. The structural frame 1 10' of the main central section 1 10, as shown in Figure 9, along with the associated walls of the main central section 1 10, forms an outline of its interior storage compartment volume and may be fixably unchangeable and/or changeable at the option of the user. A substantially rigid structural frame 1 10', such as one constructed of durable plastic, metal or the like, serves to ensure the interior storage compartment volume of the main central section 1 10 remains substantially unchanged and provides at least some overall support and strength when the main central section 110 contains one or more items and/or is attached to the main right section 120 and/or main left section 130, each of which may also contain one or more items. In an example embodiment shown in Figure 10, the shape of the main central section 110 may be modifiable at the option of the user by any of a number of means, including enabling one or more sections of the structural frame 1 10' to be lengthened and/or shortened, such as by a fixably telescopic means or the like, or fixably bended or curved, so as to allow for the main central section 1 10 to be adaptably and fixably installed and secured in varying shapes, sizes and/or structures found in varying motorcycle models and/or makes. In example embodiments, the central section right side wall 116 and the central section left side wall 117 may be durably expandable so as to adapt to bulky items contained therein. One or more of the exterior of the central section angular bottom wall 112, central section main bottom wall 113 and/or central section back wall 114 may be for use to place against, place on and/or attach directly to at least one part of the motorcycle or to an attachment means for facilitating attachment to the motorcycle.
The opening of the main central section 110 may include an expandable top peripheral and/or cover attachable or attached to the top peripheral, which will allow the opening to remain completely closed, mostly closed or partially closed. This will serve to assist in keeping the one or more items stored in the main central section 1 10 from undesirably coming away from the main central section 110 during motorcycle operation and/or preventing undesirable things, such as rain, pebbles, dust or the like from entering into the main central section 1 10.
The main attachment means 140 attaches the main central section 110 and/or other elements of the storage accessory 100 to the motorcycle. It is to be understood that the main attachment means 140 may be for use in attaching the motorcycle with one or more of the main central section 110 only, the main right section 120 only, the main left section 130 only, the main central section 1 10 and the main right section 120 only, the main central section 1 10 and the main left section 130 only, and/or the main central section 1 10, the main right section 120 and the main left section 130. The main attachment means 140 preferably remains securely attached to the motorcycle through use of a bolt, clip, snap-on clip, Velcro, zipper, button, adhesive, or other attachment means or the like. In a preferred embodiment, the main attachment means 140 utilizes at least one existing part of the motorcycle, such as a bolt, hole, clip, or other attachment means or the like, thereby avoiding the need for a user to create one or more holes in the motorcycle to enable the at least one bolt, clip, snap-on clip, Velcro, zipper, button, adhesive, or other attachment means or the like to attach the storage accessory 100 to the motorcycle. The main attachment means 140 preferably comprises one or more sections, each of which may be in communication with one another. In a preferred embodiment wherein the main attachment means 140 comprises more than one section, adjacent sections of the main attachment means 140 are preferably attached in a hinge-type or flexibly bendable type arrangement, wherein the hinged attachment or flexible section(s) enables adjacent sections to fold or bend towards or away from one another in a similar manner to a hinge of a door. The purpose in using hinge-type attachments between adjacent sections or bendable section(s) is to enable installation adaptability of the storage accessory, regardless of the shape of the motorcycle, between the seat and the handle bar. In a preferred embodiment, the main attachment means 140 comprises three sections, namely the angular bottom attachment means 140a as shown in Figures 2, 4 and 7, the bottom attachment means 140b as shown in Figures 2, 4, 6 and 7, and the back attachment means 140c as shown in Figures 2 and 4. Alternatively or in addition, it is to be understood by persons skilled in the art that the main attachment means 140 may be bendable so as to enable installation adaptability of the storage accessory, regardless of the shape of the motorcycle, between the seat and the handle bar. Alternatively or in addition, the main attachment means 140 may comprise two or more unconnected sections. For example, in applications where the storage accessory 100 is preferably attached to the motorcycle in two separated sections, the main attachment means 140 may comprise two separate sections.
The central section drainage 1 15 of the main central section 1 10, in example embodiments, is for use as a means to drain undesired liquids, such as rain water, from inside the main central section 110. The central section drainage 1 15 also finds uses when a user wishes to wash the interior of the main central section 1 10. It is to be understood that the central section drainage 115 may be of the type wherein liquid can only pass through in one direction, namely from the interior compartment of the main central section 1 10 to the exterior of the main central section 1 10, thereby preventing undesirable liquids, such as water splashing from the road, from entering the main central section from the bottom of the storage accessory 100.
The main right section 120 comprises a right section right side wall 126 and a right section left side wall 127. In an example embodiment shown in Figure 4, the main right section 120 may also comprise a right section front wall 121, a right section angular bottom wall 122, a right section main bottom wall 123 and a right section back wall 124. However, it is to be understood by persons ordinarily skilled in the art that the bottom walls 122 and 123 and/or the back wall 124 may be integrated and/or replaced with the right section right side wall 126 and/or right section left side wall 127, in which case the right section right side wall 126 and the right section left side wall 127 may attach together. The exterior of the right section right side wall 126 may be of any number of shapes, but preferably of a curved shape so as to cause the least wind resistance while the motorcycle is in operation. The opening of the main right section 120 may include an expandable top peripheral or cover attachable to the top peripheral, which will allow the opening to remain completely closed, mostly closed or partially closed. This will serve to assist in keeping the one or more items stored in the main right section 120 from undesirably coming away from the main right section 120 during motorcycle operation and/or preventing undesirable things, such as rain, pebbles, dust or the like from entering into the main right section 120.
The right attachment means securely attaches the main central section 1 10 with the main right section 120. The right attachment means may be one or more of a velcro, zipper, button, clip, snap-on clip and/or any other means of attaching. In an example embodiment, the right attachment means is securely but removably attachable by the user so as to allow separating the main central section 1 10 from the main right section 120, and vice versa. In a preferred embodiment shown in Figure 2 wherein the right attachment means is a zipper 128 and 118, the zipper 128 and 118 may securely attach the central section right wall 1 16 of the main central section 1 10 with the main right section 120 around at least a portion of the periphery of the right section left wall 127. In a similar manner, the right attachment means may comprise one or more buttons, Velcro, clips, snap-on clips and/or any other means of attaching, which may be located around the periphery of the right section left wall 127 and/or the central section right wall 116. It is to be understood in example embodiments where the main central section 1 10 is permanently attached to the main right section 120 that the central section right side wall 1 16 will be shared with the main right section 120 and thereby eliminating the need for a right section left side wall 127.
The right section drainage 125 of the main right section 120, in an example embodiment shown in Figure 6, is for use as a means to drain undesired liquids, such as rain water, from inside the main right section 120. The right section drainage 125 also finds uses when a user wishes to wash the interior of the main right section 120. It is to be understood that the right section drainage 125 may be of the type wherein liquid can only pass through in one direction, namely from the interior compartment of the main right section 120 to the exterior of the main right section 120, thereby preventing undesirable liquids, such as water splashing from the road, from entering the main right section 120 from the bottom of the storage accessory 100.
The main left section 130 comprises a left section right side wall 136 and a left section left side wall 137.
