Description
Description
A LAUNDRY DRYER WHEREIN BELT RUPTURE IS PREVENTED
[0001] The present invention relates to a laundry dryer wherein the rupture of the belt rotating the drum is prevented during the drying process.
[0002] In laundry dryers, the drum is generally moved with a belt driven by a
motor and the belt that rotates the drum can break due to high
temperature, moisture and heavy operating conditions. If the belt rupture that can happen during operation is not detected on time, this results in the continuance of blowing hot air over the laundry in the now motionless drum because of the broken belt and leads to damaging of the laundry. During the rotational motion in the drying process, the number of revolutions of the drum can decrease due to reasons such as jamming or excessive loading and the drum can even stop completely by being locked. In the duration time while the drum stops or its speed decreases, the motor continues to operate and high temperature occurs due to the friction between the belt and the motor pulley rotating at high speed and the belt breaks. In the state of the art, various methods are used for detecting the rupture of the belt in laundry dryers, however these methods are intended for detection only after belt rupture has occurred.
[0003] The International Patent Application No WO20070771 13 relates to a
washer/dryer wherein a closed circuit is formed by passing electric current through a belt rotating the drum by means of a power source and the belt rupture according to the change in the electrical parameters and also the dryness degree of the laundry in the drum can be detected according to the measured electrical parameters in the same circuit.
[0004] In the Patent Document No US3890720, in a dryer the belt rotating the drum surrounds a tensioning pulley and the tensioning pulley is connected to the chassis by means of a spring bracket. When the tension of the spring is released due to rupture of the driving belt or due to another reason, the spring bracket, to which the tensioning pulley is connected, presses on a switch and so, the electric current supply to the motor rotating the drum is interrupted by means of the said switch.
[0005] In the Patent Document No US5852881 , whether or not there is a problem
of rupture or derailment of the V-belt rotating the dryer drum, it is determined by using the inertia effect of the dryer motor. In this detection method, after the power supply to the motor rotating the drum is halted, the motor keeps rotating due to its inertia, and if the rotation lasts for a shorter time it is determined that there is not any problem in the V-belt on the other hand if the rotation lasts for a longer time then it is determined that there is a problem that needs to be eliminated.
[0006] In the Patent Document No EP1521880, in a dryer, the rupture and/or the length change of a belt rotating the drum is detected by means of a sensor comprising a movable transmission element that is functionally linked with the belt.
[0007] The aim of the present invention is the realization of a laundry dryer
wherein the possibility of belt rupture during the laundry drying process is prevented by detecting in advance.
[0008] The laundry dryer explicated in the claims in order to attain the aim of the present invention, comprises a belt which transmits the rotational motion of the motor to the drum, an insulating plate partially covered on the cylindrical outer surface of the drum, more than one electrically conductive brush contacting the outer surface of the drum and positioned so as to contact the plate at each rotation of the drum, and a control card which forms an electrical circuit together with the brushes, and the drum, which detects whether or not there is a decrease in the rotational speed of the drum by evaluating the contact durations of the brushes directly to the drum surface and to the plate during the rotation of the drum and stops the operation of the motor by deciding that the belt is rubbing against the motor pulley if a decrease in the rotational speed of the drum is detected.
[0009] The control card comprises a power source generating a low voltage for example like 5 V and a measurement unit which detects whether the brushes contact the insulating plate or directly to the drum surface, in other words whether the electrical circuit is "open circuit" or "closed circuit" by measuring the current in the electrical circuit formed with the brushes.
[0010] In an embodiment of the present invention, the control card conducts the motor to make rotational movements to the right and left and the jamming
of the drum is tried to be eliminated after stopping the operation of the motor by detecting a decrease in the drum speed.
[001 1] In another embodiment of the present invention, the control card provides the user to be warned by visual or audible alerting methods after stopping the operation of the motor as it detects a decrease in the drum speed.
[0012] In another embodiment of the present invention, the insulating plate is covered on the outer surface of the drum, at the level of the drum baffle situated on its inner side.
[0013] In the laundry dryer of the present invention, in the situations wherein the drum is locked or strained in rotating by being jammed for example due to excess load, that the belt is about to break by rubbing against the motor pulley is detected by means of a simple electrical circuit and precaution is taken before the belt breaks.
[0014] The laundry dryer realized in order to attain the aim of the present
invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
[0015] Figure 1 - is the schematic view of a laundry dryer.
[0016] Figure 2 - is the schematic view of the laundry dryer drum in an
embodiment of the present invention.
[0017] The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:
[0018] 1 - ■ Laundry dryer
[0019] 2 - Drum
[0020] 3 - Motor
[0021] 4 - Belt
[0022] 5 - Plate
[0023] 6, 106 - Brush
[0024] 7 - Control card
[0025] 8 - Power source
[0026] 9 - Measurement unit
[0027] 10 - Drum baffle
[0028] The laundry dryer (1) comprises a drum (2) wherein the laundry to be dried are placed, a motor (3) that activates the drum (2) providing its rotation and a belt (4) that provides the rotational motion of the motor (3) to be transferred to the drum (2).
[0029] The laundry dryer (1) of the present invention comprises
[0030] - a plate (5) which is partially covered on the cylindrical outer surface of the drum (2) and manufactured from insulating material,
[0031] - more than one electrically conductive brush (6, 106), contacting the
cylindrical outer surface of the drum (2) and positioned to contact the plate (5) at each rotation of the drum (2) and
[0032] - a control card (7) which has a power source (8) generating a low voltage like 5 V and a measurement unit (9), and which forms an electrical circuit together with the brushes (6, 106) and the drum (2) whereto the brushes (6, 106) contact by being connected between the brushes (6, 106), which detects whether or not there is a decrease in the rotational speed of the drum (2) by evaluating the contact durations of the brushes (6, 106) directly to the drum (2) surface and to the plate (5) during the rotation of the drum and if a decrease in the rotational speed of the drum (2) is detected, which stops the operation of the motor (3) by deciding that the belt (4) is loose or is rubbing against the motor (3) pulley and/or the drum (2) and there is a possibility of rupture.
[0033] In the laundry dryer (1 ), the brushes (6, 106) contact the conductive outer surface of the drum (2) and the insulating plate (5) consecutively during the rotation of the drum (2), and when the brushes (6, 106) contact directly the outer surface of the drum (2), the control card (7) senses the electrical circuit formed by the brushes (6, 106) and the drum (2) as "closed circuit" by means of the measurement unit (9) and detects the electric current in the closed circuit.
[0034] When the brushes (6, 106) contact the insulating plate (5) during the
rotation of the drum (2), the measurement unit (9) does not detect any electric current in the electrical circuit formed by the control card (7) with the brushes (6, 106) and the drum (2), in other words it senses the electrical circuit as "open circuit".
[0035] The control card (7) determines whether or not there is a decrease in the drum (2) speed by comparing the "closed circuit" and "open circuit" durations detected by the measurement unit (9) in the electrical circuit, formed by the brushes (6, 106) and the drum (2) with the "closed circuit"
and "open circuit" durations stored in its memory and stops the operation of the motor (3) by deciding that the belt (4) is rubbing against the motor
(3) pulley and/or the drum (2) if a decrease in the drum (2) speed is detected. In the laundry dryer (1 ) of the present invention, the error of belt
(4) rupture is not determined after the belt (4) breaks. The possibility that the belt (4) may break is determined by only looking at the decrease in the drum (2) speed and the belt (4) is not allowed to break, and an important advantage is provided in terms of spare parts and maintenance costs since the malfunction is prevented before it occurs. Moreover, high cost devices are not used for detecting the drum (2) speed and the drum (2) speed can be detected by a simple circuit like the structure used for measuring the dryness degree inside the drum (2) in other embodiments.
[0036] In the laundry dryer (1 ), furthermore in the situation wherein the drum (2) becomes totally motionless by being jammed, which is called locking of the drum (2), the control card (7) reacts swiftly and the rupture of the belt (4) is prevented by stopping the motor (3). If locking of the drum (2) occurs while the brushes (6, 106) are in the state of contacting the outer surface of the drum (2) or the insulating plate (5), the contact durations of the brushes (6, 106) with the drum (2) or the plate (5) are compared with the durations in the memory by the control card (7) and the motor (3) is stopped at the moment the contact durations exceed the predetermined duration.
Consequently, while the drum (2) and the belt (4) are in the motionless state, the necessary precaution is taken without prolonging the duration the belt (4) rubs against the motor (3) pulley or the drum (2) and hence, without allowing the rupture of the belt (4).
[0037] In an embodiment of the present invention, the control card (7) conducts the motor (3) to make left and right rotational movements for the aim of eliminating the jamming of the drum (2) after stopping the operation of the motor (3) by detecting a decrease in the speed of the drum (2).
[0038] In another embodiment of the present invention, the control card (7)
provides the user to be warned by visual or audible alerting methods after stopping the operation of the motor (3) by detecting a decrease in the drum (2) speed.
[0039] In another embodiment of the present invention, the laundry dryer (1) comprises one or more drum baffles (10) located in the inner surface of the drum (2) and providing the laundry to be dried by agitation, and the insulating plate (5) which is covered on the outer surface of the drum (2) at the level of the drum baffle (10) located in its inner side (Figure 2).
Consequently, the fastening elements used in securing the drum baffle (10) to the drum (2) are also used in securing the insulating plate (5) to the drum (2), thereby using additional fastening elements is not required.
[0040] In the laundry dryer (1 ) of the present invention, in the situations wherein the drum (2) is locked or strained in rotating by being jammed for example due to excess load while the motor (3) continues to operate, that the belt (4) is about to break by rubbing against the motor (3) pulley is detected by means of a simple electrical circuit and precaution is taken before the belt (4) breaks.
[0041] It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited by the
embodiments disclosed above and a person skilled in the art can easily introduce different embodiments. These should be considered within the scope of the protection postulated by the claims of the present invention.
