Definitions

  • This invention relates to an audio transmission system and associated audio transmitter and receiver devices.
  • Audio transmission systems for relaying wireless audio signals between devices, such as music players and speakers, are known. There are shortcomings with the known systems, including latency problems, limitation on device numbers, and reliance on specific proprietary transmission standards or protocols limiting consumers to particular manufacturers.
  • Latency in such audio transmission systems refers to the delay necessary for the conversion between analog and digital representations of sound data. Devices such as audio players or computers are only able to process digital sound data. Thus, it is necessary to convert digital music data, such as that stored on a compact disc, to an analog signal before it can be output to speakers. Latency can have a cumulative effect if the data is subject to numerous conversion processes typical in the known standards and protocols.
  • Bluetooth technology uses, radio communication technology known as frequency-hopping spread spectrum transmission. This technology splits the data being sent into chunks and transmits these chunks on up to a number of different frequencies. In its basic mode, Gaussian frequency-shift keying (GFSK) modulation is used. Latency is a problem with Bluetooth technology, especially where a clear audio signal is required at an output, such as a speaker.
