Description
RETENTION AIRBAG MODULE FOR MOTORCYCLISTS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a retention airbag module for motorcyclists, and, in particular, to a retention airbag module that reduces the injuries caused by a potential impact.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Airbag modules for motorcyclists have recently been developed. When it is detected that there has been an impact, the airbag module inflates and deploys an airbag bag, which is responsible for mitigating the impact suffered by the motorcyclist.
Retention airbag modules are designed to address head- on collisions, with two different configurations based on ISO Standard 13232, the objective being that the deployed airbag bag will absorb the maximum amount of energy possible during the impact. The two different configurations envisioned are: that of a moving motorcycle that experiences a head-on collision with a stationary car; and a second configuration in which the two vehicles, not only the motorcycle, but also the car, are moving.
Patent documents EP 2096022, EP 2075165 and EP 2085271 disclose retention airbag modules arranged behind the steering system or steering column of the motorcycle on which they are arranged. The problem presented by these solutions is that the positioning of the airbag bag, once the latter has been deployed following an impact, is unsuitable, and therefore said bag absorbs less energy, which results in the motorcyclist suffering an impact of greater energy, which gives rise to a higher
number of injuries that, in many cases, turn out to be fatal .
Document EP 1905680 discloses a retention airbag module system for motorcyclists that is likewise arranged behind the steering system or steering column of the motorcycle. The above system incorporates, furthermore, support belts that restrict the movement of the motorcyclist in the event of an impact, such that they absorb some of the energy generated in the impact. To help in holding back the motorcyclist, the above system comprises, furthermore, a part of the airbag bag that deploys beyond the width of the motorcycle in the event of an impact. The problem presented by such a system is that it is very complex, in addition to the fact that the support belts in many cases injure motorcyclists by holding them back in the event of an impact.
Furthermore, a system such as that described in document US 2008/0224456 is also known, this system likewise being arranged behind the steering system or steering column of the motorcycle, with the result that the positioning of the bag once deployed on impact is not optimum. In order to assist in the positioning of the airbag bag, the latter comprises external bands or straps that are folded and gathered in a zone above the fuel tank of the motorcycle, said bands or straps being responsible for positioning the airbag bag, preventing said airbag bag from shifting once deployed. The problem presented by this system is, in addition to that already mentioned, the fact that it is an excessively complex system.
It would therefore be desirable to develop a retention airbag module system for motorcyclists that is capable of reducing the injuries caused by a potential impact, such that it allows optimum positioning and stabilization of the airbag bag once deployed, and being, at the same time, a simple system.
The present invention is intended to solve the drawbacks mentioned above.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Thus, the present invention comprises an airbag module as passive retention system for motorcyclists, which is arranged in front of the steering system or steering column of the motorcycle such that, once the airbag is deployed on account of an impact, said bag is positioned such that it is supported by the inner face of the screen of the motorcycle, thereby achieving optimum positioning and stabilization of the deployed bag. The airbag bag comprises inner bands or straps positioned such that they allow the bag to adopt the appropriate shape upon deployment, said straps likewise helping to maintain the positioning of the bag.
With the configuration described, a retention airbag module of simple configuration and capable of reducing the injuries caused to a motorcyclist by a potential impact is achieved by virtue of the fact that the stabilization and positioning of the airbag bag are optimum.
The retention airbag module for motorcyclists of the invention comprises the following components:
a casing responsible for containing, within, the remaining components of the airbag module;
an airbag bag, arranged inside the casing, and that deploys in order to protect the motorcyclist in the event of an impact;
a clamping device for securing the airbag bag, responsible for securing said bag in the above casing; a generator, responsible for inflating the airbag bag in the event of an impact, causing said bag to deploy; and
a clamping device for supporting the generator, responsible for maintaining the generator in position inside the casing.
Further characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of an embodiment illustrating the object thereof in connection with the accompanying figures .

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Thus, the present invention discloses an airbag module 1 as passive retention system for motorcyclists, which is arranged in front of the steering system 2 or steering column 2 of a motorcycle 10. Said retention airbag module 1 comprises an airbag bag 3 such that, once the airbag bag 3 is deployed on account of an impact of the motorcycle 10, said bag 3 is positioned such that it is supported by the inner face of the screen 4 of the motorcycle 10, thereby achieving optimum positioning and stabilization of the deployed bag 3. The airbag bag 3 comprises inner bands or straps (not shown) positioned such that they allow the bag 3 to adopt the appropriate shape upon deployment, said straps likewise helping to maintain the positioning of the bag 3.
With the configuration described, a retention airbag module 1 of simple configuration and capable of reducing the injuries caused to a motorcyclist by a potential impact is achieved by virtue of the fact that the stabilization and positioning of the airbag bag 3 are optimum.
The retention airbag module 1 for motorcyclists of the invention comprises the following components:
a casing 5 responsible for containing, within, the remaining components of the airbag module 1, this casing 5 being preferably metallic;
an airbag bag 3, arranged inside the casing 5, and that deploys in order to protect the motorcyclist in the event of an impact, this bag 3 being preferably made from polyamide;
a clamping device 6 for securing the airbag bag 3, responsible for securing said bag 3 in the casing 5, this clamping device 6 being preferably metallic;
a generator 7, responsible for inflating the airbag bag 3 in the event of an impact, causing said bag 3 to deploy; and
a clamping device 8 for supporting the generator 7, responsible for maintaining the generator 7 in position inside the casing 5, this clamping device 8 being preferably metallic.
Figures 8a and 8b show, schematically, all the metallic pieces formed by the casing 5 and the generator 7 together with the supporting clamping device 8 thereof, mounted on a motorcycle 10. Said figures 8a and 8b clearly show the location of the airbag module 1 as a whole, together with the components thereof, in front of the steering system 2 or steering column 2 of a motorcycle 10.
In the embodiments just described, such modifications as are included within the scope defined by the following claims may be incorporated.
