Abstract

Disclosed is a heat transfer device for cooling or heating a given object. The device has a gas flow path which circulates a gas flow, a gas flow generator which generates a flow of a heat transfer gas within the gas flow path, and a cavity in the gas flow path. The cavity is arranged to receive the given object to thereby create a restricted region in the gas flow path adjacent the object, and is sized such that in the restricted region there is a gap distance between the object and a boundary wall of the gas flow path, the gap distance being selected to create turbulence in the gas flow and thereby achieve a desired heat transfer coefficient. A specific embodiment is a device for rapidly cooling at least a portion of a drinking vessel to generate a frosted effect thereon.
