  • aligning the aperture 510 in the ring 500 with a particular aperture 410 in the tipping material 400 will allow external air to be drawn in the groove located radially inwards from the particular aperture 410 in the tipping material 400. This may be achieved by imparting suction on the mouth end of the filter 300. External air drawn into the groove may be flavoured by the ilavourant 350 located in the groove before exiting the filter 300 through the mouth end of the groove or through the end face of the filter material 310 via the slit 341.
  • flavour of the gaseous flow exiting the filter 300 may be switched from one flavourant material 350 to another flavourant material 350 part way through smoking the smoking article 00 by rotating the ring 500.
  • flavour of the gaseous flow may be switched from "flavoured” to “unflavoured” or vice versa by respectively rotating the ring 500 between an open configuration and a closed configuration, or between a closed configuration and an open configuration.
  • a pack containing a plurality of identical smoking articles 100 may therefore allow a user to selectively smoke a variety of differently flavoured smoking articles 100.
  • An example method of manufacturing the filter 300 will now be described.
  • a plug of filter material can be formed by feeding a substantially continuous flow of cellulose acetate tow into a funnel to provide a generally cylindrical body of cellulose acetate material.
  • the cellulose acetate material can be passed through a garniture that attaches plugwrap to the filter material from a plugwrap reel.
  • the resulting wrapped filter material can subsequently be cut into individual segments for use in making the filter 300.
  • the cut length may be suitable for producing two cigarettes in tandem or individual cigarettes, as required.
  • the cutting may be carried out as a multi stage process in which lengths of filter material for use with multiple cigarettes are first cut and are then later cut into lengths suitable for use in manufacturing cigarettes in tandem or individually.
  • the grooves into the filter 300 may be imparted by placing a length of filter material 310 wrapped with plugwrap 320 between first and second substantially parallel plates.
  • the second plate is heated and provided with elongate groove forming projections, one for each of the grooves in the filter.
  • the second plate may comprise three groove forming projections in order to form three substantially equally spaced grooves around the circumference of the filter 300.
  • the first plate is moved over and parallel to the second plate with the filter material 310 engaged between the plates, so as to roll the filter material 310 over the projections described above.
  • the plugwrap 320 may be driven inwardly into the grooves so as to line both the grooves and the cylindrical exterior periphery of the filter material 310. This is shown in Figure 4.
  • the grooves may be formed in the filter material 310 before the filter material is wrapped in the plugwrap 320. This is shown in Figure 6.
  • a liner 340 comprising a layer of sheet lining material may be inserted into each of the groves as described above and shown in Figures 4 and 6. This may be carried out either before or after the filter material 310 is wrapped in plug wrap, as shown in Figures 6 and 4 respectively.
  • An additive material 350 for example comprising a flavourant material 350 as described above, may be inserted into the grooves before the filter 300 is wrapped in tipping material 400. This may be carried out using an injection device comprising an appropriate injection nozzle configured to introduce additive material 350 into the grooves from an additive material reservoir.
  • the filter 300 may comprise an approximately cylindrical and hollow plastics cap or plastics shell which is coaxially connected to the rod of smokeable material 200 using appropriate tipping material.
  • the interior of the plastics cap may be provided with filter material such as cellulose acetate as described above, with additive material being provided directly under the surface of the plastics shell.
  • the shell may be provided with apertures to allow external air to be drawn through the additive material by suction imparted on the end of the filter.
  • the apertures can be selectively opened and closed by rotation of an external control apparatus such as a ring, for example in a manner similar to that described above.
