Definitions
- the invention relates to an additive for a cementitious composition, such as concrete.
- an additive for cementitious compositions or dust suppression compositions including at least:
- the plant extract may be selected from the group including short chain carbohydrates, long chain carbohydrates, oils, gums, salts thereof, and mixtures thereof.
- the plant extract may be derived from wood or grasses.
- the plant extract may be derived from sugar cane.
- the plant extract may include wood sugars.
- the plant extract may include lignine and sulphur derivatives thereof, such as lignosulphates and lingosulphonates.
- Typical lignosulphates of the invention include sodium lignosulphate and calcium lignosulphate.
- the plant extract may be heated to a temperature of from 50°C to 350°C.
- the plant extract may be heated to a temperature of from 100°C to 250°C.
- the heat treatment temperature of the plant extract may be maintained for a period of from 0.1 hours, typically from 0.5 hours to 5 hours, in some embodiments from 2 to 3 hours.
- the heat treated plant extract may be emulsified with the surface active ingredient, and optionally water or another liquid.
- the surface active ingredient may be an anionic surfactant.
- the surface active ingredient may include a base liquid including solid particles and/or ions dispersed or dissolved in water in the following percentage ranges by volume:
- Nitrate ions 1 to 2% Nitrate ions 1 to 2%
- the base liquid may be prepared by dissolving sodium chloride and sodium alkyl ether sulphate in the water of the base liquid, with the proportion of the water to sodium chloride to sodium alkyl ether sulphate being between 1 : 1 : 1 ,5 and 1 : 1 : 5.
- the surface active ingredient may include sea water as a component thereof whereby one or more of the particles and/or ions are present in the sea water and any deficiencies are made up by addition thereof in the form of salts, dispersions, and/or solutions.
- the sea water may include or be synthetic sea water whereby the particles and/or ions are introduced into water to achieve a sea water like composition having the percentages by volume as per the above.
- the surface active ingredient composition may be a product available from Marine 3 Technologies (Pty) Ltd under the designation M3T 3005TM .
- the additive may contain binders and/or fillers.
- the binders and/or fillers may be of plant and/or crude oil origin.
- the additive may include a carbonaceous material, for example, activated charcoal.
- the additive may include water retention aids, for example, polymers.
- the additive may include a catalyst, for example, one or more of urea, formaldehyde, and citric acid.
- a catalyst for example, one or more of urea, formaldehyde, and citric acid.
- the additive may include magnesium sulphate.
- the additive may include water or treated water.
- the additive may include a pH modifier.
- the additive may include aluminium sulphate.
- a method of preparing an additive for use in cemetitious compositions and/or dust suppression compositions including the step of emulsifying a plant extract and a surface active ingredient as described above.
- the method may include the prior step of heat treating the plant extract at a temperature of from 50°C to 350°C maintained for a period of from 0.1 hours.
- the plant extract may be heated to a temperature of from 100°C to 250°C.
- the heat treatment temperature may be maintained for a period of from 0.5 hours to 5 hours, in some embodiments from 2 to 3 hours
- the method may include blending polymers into the emulsion.
- the blending may be performed by a high speed mixer or pump agitation.
- wood sugars deriving from the paper and pulp industry, or sugarcane industry.
- the wood sugars are present in a dilute liquid form and thus first need to be evaporated to remove excess water and to form a concentrate. Typically from 50% -70% of the water is evaporated.
- the wood sugars are then processed as calcium lignosulphate.
- the concentrated wood sugars are then heat treated at a temperature of from 100°C to 250°C for 2-3 hours. It is believed that this heat treatment caramelizes the wood sugars to form long-chain carbohydrates.
- the heat treated wood sugars are emulsified with anionic surfactants to enhance the chemical and/or physical properties associated with binders and fillers, organic or chemical. These additives are typically used in amounts of from 1 mass% to 25 mass%.
- carbon fortified material can be added as an additional agent, to increase strength and durability, depending on the required application.
- carbonaceous material may be added in an amount of from 1 mass% to 5 mass%.
- Polymers such as Hydro SpamTM which aid water retention and assist the binding material may be added.
- the polymers are believed to spread and transfer properties of materials to bind and/or penetrate dust particles. From 1 mass% to 25 mass% polymers are blended into the emulsion with a high speed mixer or agitated with pumps. If a gloss finish, friction resistance or increased water permeability is required, a mix of urea, formaldehyde and citric acid as a catalyst could be added at a rate of from 1 mass% to 25 mass% blend in a 500 : 20 : 1 ratio.
- Magnesium Sulphate due to its high solubility, could be added at an amount of up to 5 mass% as a soil agent.
- H 2 0 treated with 0 3 and/or anodized and/or treated with sodium and/or fresh and/or sea water and/or synthetic sea water is added to form a slurry. Typically this forms from 10 mass% to 90 mass% of the additive depending on the use.
- Ph of water could be altered by standard means, if required.
- the anionic surfactant is typically M3T 2005TM from Marine 3 Technologies (Pty) Ltd and is believed to reduce surface and interfacial tension in water, remove sterric charges, aid penetration and aid wetting of dust and aggregates.
- the anionic surfactant forms from 0.001 mass% to 5 mass% of the final liquid composition applied for dust suppression.
- All mixing and adding of products is a blend or mix in dry or liquid with stirrers, mixers or pumps.
- the additive may be stored in bulk or decanter into drums.
- Example 2 The additive may be stored in bulk or decanter into drums.
- composition of example 2 is typically the same as that of example 1 , with the following differences:
- Aluminium sulfate is used to make the concrete waterproof and to accelerate curing and is used at a rate of from 1 mass% to 5 mass%.
- Polymers can be added to influence the PI at a rate of from 1 mass% to 5 mass%
- Advantages of the additive of the invention as exemplified are believed to include that the anionic surfactant enhances and manipulates the properties of water, resulting in the reduction of water in concrete up to 40% and improving MPa and CBR thereof.
- Applications of the invention include uses thereof in concrete and cement preparation in the building and construction environment, road stabilization and compaction, and dust suppression.
